I was unemployed/underemployed for 4 years. The biggest mistake that I made was asking for help/sympathy/advice. I think it's because people had no idea of my situation and all that they could offer were mere platitudes or telling me that I was not doing the right things when I was looking for work. "You have to pull yourself up by your bootstraps". It's true that my situation was caused by forced errors and laziness on my part. But I was also a victim of bad circumstances. So I worked hard in trying to rebuild my resume and my career. At first, I did work-from-home tech support for $13 an hour. Then I got temporary 3 month contracts as a computer installer and web developer. I must have applied for 1000s of positions and faced many rejections. But with every failed interview, that motivated me to refine and improve my CV until it made me look like the superstar that I aspired to be. I took night classes at my local university. After I did my job search in the morning, I would go out for long walks outside for 4-5 hours which did a lot of good for my psychological well being. Eventually, I finally earned a well paid position at a stable tech company. I didn't rest on my laurels as I worked hard to getting certified in as many tech certifications as I could by making sure that I study 1 hour per day, every day, without exception (sometimes more--especially if I am cramming in the weeks leading up to the big exam). After I was gainfully employed and thriving, I was actually told by the same people who gave me half-baked advice and platitudes found themselves unemployed and told me that I was lucky to have a job. Bootstrappy person even told me: "you have no idea how bad it is out there!". But in retrospect, I actually rebounded and became stronger because I found a way to actually pull myself back up. Warrior has a point: don't ask for advice from others.

I can honestly say, I would never do to anybody that doesn't deserve it... In my case, I didn't deserve it, as I was a teen that came up in adoption/foster care/probation male group homes... That tough love, as now I'm 42yrs old, taught me alot, but it has also! damaged me alot... I was unemployed/underemployed for 4 years. The biggest mistake that I made was asking for help/sympathy/advice. I think it's because people had no idea of my situation and all that they could offer were mere platitudes or telling me that I was not doing the right things when I was looking for work. "You have to pull yourself up by your bootstraps".
It's true that my situation was caused by forced errors and laziness on my part. But I was also a victim of bad circumstances. So I worked hard in trying to rebuild my resume and my career. At first, I did work-from-home tech support for $13 an hour. Then I got temporary 3 month contracts as a computer installer and web developer. I must have applied for 1000s of positions and faced many rejections. But with every failed interview, that motivated me to refine and improve my CV until it made me look like the superstar that I aspired to be. I took night classes at my local university. After I did my job search in the morning, I would go out for long walks outside for 4-5 hours which did a lot of good for my psychological well being. Eventually, I finally earned a well paid position at a stable tech company. I didn't rest on my laurels as I worked hard to getting certified in as many tech certifications as I could by making sure that I study 1 hour per day, every day, without exception (sometimes more--especially if I am cramming in the weeks leading up to the big exam).
After I was gainfully employed and thriving, I was actually told by the same people who gave me half-baked advice and platitudes found themselves unemployed and told me that I was lucky to have a job. Bootstrappy person even told me: "you have no idea how bad it is out there!". But in retrospect, I actually rebounded and became stronger because I found a way to actually pull myself back up.
Warrior has a point: don't ask for advice from others.

@@paulsharp7857 The problem I have with that way of thinking is it’s limiting and logically fallacious. Being okay with asking for help and being able to be self sufficient don’t have to be mutually exclusive. It’s 100% okay to strive for being a strong independent person AND have the ability to ask for help sometimes. Too much of either ideology can be limiting and harmful more than helpful.

The tough love I've received taught me, not to expect anything, but to prepare for the worst, as in being on guard and not trusting random ppl... Tough love I've received? I can honestly say, I would never do to anybody that doesn't deserve it... In my case, I didn't deserve it, as I was a teen that came up in adoption/foster care/probation male group homes...
That tough love, as now I'm 42yrs old, taught me alot, but it has also! damaged me alot...
As for receiving help: I remember bk during grade school days, I had a tutor at school, as well as a tutor where I lived when adopted as it was my guardian son named "MARK/MARC"... Point is, when I had this help towards my education, I had someone to come home to as in making sure my assignments were completed and correct... That being said, no wonder my grades were all A's, and me speaking Spanish at such a young age...
So yes I experienced both sides of the TOUGH LOVE, VS LOVE & SUPPORT... But the tough love outweighs the love & support... So that's why I can fully understand this video, and feel where the legend Ultimate Warrior was intending to teach these fellas...

Asking for advice and getting other peoples ideas and suggestions is a healthy and great way of improving oneself. Doesn't mean I have to take it, but the more information I can get to make a decision the better. People who don't want to ask for advice have insecurity issues.

That mentality comes from being betrayed and loved ones turning their backs on you. It will surely happen in life. In a way I agree, but I think you can still learn from other people while still understanding they could betray you. At the end of the day, the only one you can completely trust is The Lord.
