Episode 59 of the Divorce and Your Money Show discusses the role of a forensic accountant for finding hidden assets or income during your divorce. The subject of hidden assets or hidden income is a complex issue. You need to be aware of all the tools you have at your disposal as you try to determine if your spouse might be hiding assets from you. Forensic accountants are trained to find out if people are trying to hide assets. A forensic accountant will look at such financial documents or statements as tax returns, personal and business statements, credit card statements, expense receipts, and if you have a business, they will look at accounts receivable and accounts payable, regulatory filings, ownership interest, stock certificates, and other critical documents. A forensic accountant can find those minute details and any shady transactions. If you are not involved in family finances, it might be especially important to hire a forensic accountant. Your spouse could have a separate account where they have been depositing money over the years. They could even have separate businesses set up in other states or even countries. In case your spouse has threatened you and indicated that you will never find any money, you have all the more reason to hire a forensic accountant. Do not listen to your lawyer when they refuse to hire an accountant thus not wanting to share their piece of the pie ! It makes no sense to ever not have an accountant on board . If you go to trial the accountant should be entered as an expert witness! Do not be talked out of it!

Please help! I've been going through a divorce for over 3 years with a narcissist that owns his own business. We just had another hearing a few days ago and he's threatening bankruptcy to get out of a settlement. He has failed to comply with all discovery proceedings so we have no financials at all. He is no longer allowed to produce any evidence in the divorce case due to this. But we know of a lot of his ridiculous expenses we just can't prove anything yet. I know if he tries to file bankruptcy he will not be honest. A bankruptcy attorney told me he just signs a document and the court will take his word for it! I'm financially ruined because of legal fees and things he did to make me "go broke". I now know we need a forensic accountant (as of today) but if there is any other advice please help me. Can I file the divorce partition myself and then hire a forensic myself? Save on the initial attorney retainer and use the money for an accountant? Then ask the judge to have my husband pay for legal representation?
Be more of a concern, if I was hiding assets,
I am the wife and NOTHING is in my name We have been married 46 yrs and are 69 yrs' old we have never been wealthy and have always lived paycheck to paycheck he built his own company by refinancing our house 3 times and after many years sold his company since then he feels like his is the only opinion that matters our 2 houses are now paid for and only in his name my car is in his name ALL OF OUR INVESTMENTS are in his name and he says it doesn't matter because we have a will and a trust in the mean time he took 100k and invested it in a commercial building not telling me and then did the exact same thing 3 more times need I be worried I have lost trust in him after those last investments - he said he didn't tell me because he knew I wouldn't be in favor of it or agree to it . Ever since the sale of his company he has turned into a completely different person more like a grandiose narcissist . does it sound like I should do some investigating?
