20:50 Yes! The phone tune we’ve been missing all this time.😂 Good job wife unit.👍
Lauren killed me when she trolled you with the "doodleedoos" 😂😂
You just can't beat comic relief like that!! 🎉🎉
@wifeunit @rainmanray
Love the videos as always y'all 🤩
That was great!!
Too funny😎 Watched it over and over and over
When i heard the "doodleedoo" I thought I was either hearing things or Ray had one piped in for old time sakes. His reaction to it was priceless.
Loved the doodledoos!! That was awesome! Anothaaaa!!!
Definity found Rays Kryptonite. Thanks for the Laugh!
Happy Birthday, Ray! Love the wife trolling with the doodley-doos! A German car with a misfire and bad window regulators...no way!😂
I miss the doodley doos! LoL
The worse was a E38 with 6mm glass in the rear. Easily break that glass during regulatory replacements. $600 Fup
I think the wife unit just invented a new sport! 🤣🤣🤣
🎉 happy birthday ray, wife unit got you good with the ring tone, it is nice that you can have fun
@@richb.4374 As do I
A neat aircraft mechanic trick for hard to reach bolts, screws etc. Use a piece of vacuum hose over the head to start the screw. Works for spark plugs also
I used this trick for reinstallation when I did my plugs a couple months back. It's great because unlike a socket and extension you can't accidentally crossthread the plug, if it's not aligned right it'll just slip in the tubing.
🎉 Happy birthday Ray! 🎉 Thank you for making us part of your life. God bless you
Ray you and jimmy making it work make more videos than any of the other channels. I watch both every day.
Classic Ray! Doodly-doos, AVE-style package opening, tool truck impulse buys, and gravity! Feels like a rewind to 2021
(I much prefer current Ray, for the record, but this was a fun throwback 😁)
I do miss the phone noises thing ❤
Was half expecting TIME! when he got that package open lol!
He needs a feisty dog to open the packages ala Curtis of CEE! 😂
Smart move checking with Ric. A great St Louisian business guy, even if he is a BMW freak! Love his Saturday night teardowns.
We need the doodley doos again. I miss when Ray said that
Its always a good thing to reseal the entire intake (tb gasket, intake gaskets and replace crankcase valve , possibly the crankcase tube o-rings under the intake.
This is why it's only viable if the faults are fixed as they arise.
It's a project car for DIYer or a money pit.
Way to go Wife Unit! 👍 👍
Loved the 530, so smooth at cruising speed.
Tape repair for DIAGNOSTIC REASONS is absolutely acceptable, in this application. I am in no way shape or form an actual mechanic, but I am (and most are) snart enough to understand what your putting down.
You're definitely NOT a hypocrite.
A damn good mechanic that I wish I could bring my truck to!!!!❤🍻
Electrical Tape / Duct Tape = The all-purpose tool! 👍
@@dantesinfernopurgatory7826 As long as you are aware that neither is a long-term solution, particularly if exposed to the elements.
@@MonkeyJedi99 Tape should NEVER be considered a long-term solution - especially to repair holes/cracks in plastic components.
@@dantesinfernopurgatory7826 That's what I wrote.

Hearing the old “doodledoo” phone ringtone really threw me off for a moment and gave me flashbacks to old workplace. At first I thought he must have installed it as a ringtone on his phone, but all became clear :) Funny to see how many of us have some lingering traumatic feelings about that sound.
Check the idle control valve (located right above the throttle body,) sometimes it gets gummed up and stuck open, and a little shot of brake cleaner in it should free it up, a quick test would be rotate the unit back and forth and side to side you should hear a little throttle door flapping away.
I wonder what "a little shot of brake cleaner" would look like when Ray does it... Another!!!
Only one can !!@@alexanderkupke920
Who would have known electrical tape on the air intake tube would cause the power windows to malfunction? These damn German cars!
Also installing it you should remove the rubber things and attach those first , slide IAC in rotated 90 degrees then rotate 90 and push it into the manifold.
No need to stab yourself and you will have a proper seal without using silicone
You are a warlock with cars.
I appreciate your channel, SMA, ETCG.
I learn so much from you guys.
I no longer work in the industry, but technique is everything.
I watch the pros to be a better amateur.
Thanks for what you do, school teaching is basic, the field is where you really learn.
A tip of the hat to Wife Unit for the ringtone prank. I had a Pavlovian reaction myself.
Happy belated birthday Ray, look forward to seeing part 2 on this. Also looking forward to seeing the rest of your progress on your truck.
happy late bday 2 u ray
Great to see you doing work on a BMW Ray.
I drove an E34 BMW V8 for years and did a lot of DiY work on it. The engine is extremely sensitive to vacuum leaks, and a total intake manifold gasket replacement job is pretty much a given at 150K. The PCV plate at the back of the manifold is usually done by then as well.
Is that a legit V8 option in the 530? I thought it may have had an engine transplant from perhaps a 540 model?
@@DeepakKumar-lv4te530 means 5 series 3.0 engine which was a v8 back then.
I have an 840ci with the m60 and tbh it's super easy to work on. You are right about the sensitivity to vacuum leaks. It def is better than working on newer bmws lol
The 530's back then came with either a 3.0L or a 4.0L V8 @@DeepakKumar-lv4te

This is when an honest mechanic is worth just staying with when you find them. He could easily have said oh needs intake gaskets and a whole other list of work. I do all my own work but I have one other mechanic I use when I just don't feel like doing a repair. Been using the same person for 15 years won't go anywhere else.
I have learned, as I reach middle age, I need to find a good mechanic who is YOUNGER than I am, so I don't have to find a new one every 3-5 years.
That is so true.@@MonkeyJedi99

Another cool video to be sure, and I just want to add that I am really enjoying the restoration you’re doing on your truck interior. That is a huge project and really fascinating to see it going down.
Thanks 👍

Loved the trolling by Lauren. It was right on point. I remember you saying you couldn't find a proper hand wash to remove oil. Try this: get some saw dust ( check it doesn't have wood splinters), start soaping your hands and add some saw dust. Most of the oil and grease will come out ( use some soft bristles brush for the fingers and under the nails). You'll be happy with the results. Happy belated Birthday. Have yourself a great day.
Takes me back a bit... pink soft soap with sawdust in it 5 gallon buckets of it !
Knipex Cobra pliers are really good for dealing with those stripped fasteners. I haven't found any reverse "turbo" sockets for putting them back in yet.
That's the coolest ringtone ever. Rainman Ray Ringtone pat. Pend.
Happy Birthday Ray! Thank you for the content while healing from a knee replacement. Keep it coming, I have my left knee replacement scheduled for November 14th.
Was waiting for the declaration,"TIME!" after buzzing the pliers package open.
Not to worry, I covered for you this time.
An inexpensive tip for assembling rubber parts:refined coconut oil.
Costs a buck 25 at the dollar store with a tree logo,is environmentally neutral and better for the phalanges.
It also dissolves the day's grease off skin and tools, and washes off with warm water & a bit of soap.
I never was a BMW guy, but gotta say - even this old interior looks WAY better finished and built than most of your American cars featured on the channel. And the sound that you hear when closing the doors... Sounds like quality too.
I broke the resonator chamber/elbow on my 96 Jag XJ6L. I tried to glue it back, I broke it again. I looked online and eBay sellers wanted $150. I went to my local Import Yard and picked up the MAF and intake duct for $75. In the meantime a used electrical tape and super glue to seal the whole in the intake. It worked! I drove it that way for about a week before I fixed it. So Ray is right, it will work in the short term but it's worth fixing it the rightway especially if you got a salvage yard nearby.
PRICELESS!!!! Amazing job wite unit!!!
I just wanted to add some input you can get some Flex Seal tape on inside of the hole then use some liquid rubber in the can to seal the outer let dry add little more if necessary and it will be good ass new. good show and happy birthday
Ray is literally the cool uncle that works on cars for a living of the TH-cam community the cool uncle is always willing to teach their nieces and nephews something new about cars!
Ray, that's the best way to open one of them packages that we all hate that i have ever seen. Great job
I’m just amazed that it was given to you with a full tank. Remember, that’s a BMW. People aren’t used to seeing the turn signals on. If you need BMW parts the LKQ in tampa released around 20 BMW’s into the yard about a couple of weeks ago
Usually, that means that inevitably the tank is gonna have to get dropped for some reason. 😂
happy party day
I have used simple masking tape to tape together a bolt head to a fastener tool. Then insert the bolt and start threading it in enough to hold the bolt in. Then pull the fastener tool off the bolt head and then pull the tape off. Finally, tighten the bolt the rest of the way. BTW, I usually watch one of you excellent videos daily for the last year and a-half or more. Today, I relaxed and had popcorn! Thanks for your wonderful commentary that never stops. Great entertainment and learning!🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧
Happy birthday brother Ray hope you get everything you want for your birthday you deserve it love you guys I love it when the wife unit was trolling You by the way
Get some Permatex water based valve grinding compound. You can put some on your screwdriver, torx, sockets, etc. The carbide grit will increase grip 1000% as long as it’s not completely stripped.
Happy Birthday Ray! Another great video, as always.
BMW guy here. Good luck getting that CEL to go out. I've owned three budget BMWs thus far. A rusty 5-speed 86 528e missing interior bits, a rusty 92 535i whose front fenders were held on by hopes and dreams, and now drive a clean but far from showroom 5-speed 97 528i that I rescued from an auto auction for cheap. Needed a $600 jailbroke PCM because it blew up the mosfet controller for cylinder 2 and I was not about to pay BMW $5000 to fix my $1300 car.
Most maintenance on the older BMWs isn't difficult, just tedious. Removing bolts to remove pieces to remove bolts to get get the part you're actually there to fix. My recommendation for BMW ownership on a budget is only buy if you can do most of the maintenance yourself and don't buy anything newer than 2005. The e39 5-series (made until 2004) and the e46 3-series (made until 2005) are the last of the readily maintainable BMWs.
When it comes to 7-series? Avoid like the plague unless it's an I6 motor or a V8, don't even bother with anything that has iDrive, and NEVER EVER buy a V12 7-series. Modern BMWs are purely for people who can lease them new with full coverage warranty and the 7s are the worst of the bunch.
Had a 525 which was the 2.5 liter straight six
The 530 was a deluxe version
Wish I still had the 525
Sorry to see a 530 in such rough condition
E21 E34 E39 ... those were the straight six engine cars BMW forged its reputation. Gone but not forgotten.
all things considered this one is in pretty good condition
The Florida sun does a number on clear coat
The P0171. Thanks to Ray, I found my rough idle and air leak on my 03 Tacoma w/ 3.4L with a smoke machine. Ended up being 2 fuel injectors.
Happy Birthday, Ray! You have truly performed a miracle in repairing the un-repairable turn signals on a BMW!
Mystery solved!!!……That’s why BMW drivers don’t use the turn signals….😂😂
Flex seal never fails perfect for that intake the guy in the boat will tell that!
Evil Doodlely-do's are back! Nice troubleshooting job.
I did the electrical tape thing on an '86 Mustang SVO's intake corrugation. The 'inside'(?) part of the corrugation had a split for no real reason I could determine because otherwise the part was just fine and flexible. So I taped up that corrugation across the split, over the humps, and multiple layers.
Ran it like that for... what... 3 years I guess. Never an issue, then the car was traded in later on. Never heard about it again, but I like to think in THAT case... it's permanent and good.
But don't do that at home, kids, it's Not Right(tm).
Hi Ray, watching you work with the Throttle Body made me wonder if you have heard of the "No-Touch Screw" on the NA Miata throttle bodies? Would love to see your answer to a common Miata issue. EDIT: Almost forgot!! Happy Birthday!!
I had a '94 530i with a 5-speed about ten years ago. Fun car!
That tape is bound to last longer than the intake!
I wonder if, in cases where the parts are not remotely available, if there is a heat-shrink option, or maybe a way to use something like Flex Seal?
@MonkeyJedi99 I'm sure all kinds of patches could be made to work... for a while, at least. Maybe an aftermarket cold air pipe can be had?
The wife unit is my hero for those surprise doodilly doo's and you let the moment pass without the nostalgia, lol Happy birthday Ray
Happy Birthday to you, Ray! 🎂🍻🍻🍻
Well done, Lauren, for bringing back the doodley doos!
Is it just me, or did I see Ray 'flipping the bird' at that rear window after defeating it? 🤣🤣🤣
Yes you did, He said "I win window" and then he did the Oh No! Flipped the bird..........We saw It.
@briandemas2548 Hahahahaha! Cool! So I'm not the only one that flips the bird at inanimate objects! 🤣🤣🤣
I had to do this on my '98 540i too when I bought it. Seller couldn't figure it out and didn't have the cash to splash out at a shop. Also had to do the pcv diaphragm on the back of the intake which was a right miserable job as there is zero access back there and pulling the manifold is a miserable job too. Anyway, good work, fun vid.
Happy Birthday Ray, or rather by now Happy Belated Birthday. Yes what fun working on BMW's I am sure aliens do work for BMW as some are just plain weird in their construction so good luck with your continued adventure into Alien Tech. And no your not crazy we heard the voice on your speaker as well.
Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘❤❤❤❤
Happy birthday, Ray! 🎂
I did not know they made a V8 3.0 litre for these 530s.
I had a 2003 530i with the i6. What a great car.
Loved the way it drove. I still miss it.😢
Doodly doo 😂😂😂
Happy birthday. Part 2 should be a very good video. Doing tape and woodscrew repairs on one's own German designed vehicle is the morally correct thing to do. I mean torx, did anyone ask for a fastener where they all look the same but use one size off and it's destroyed, someone held up a 5.5mm socket and someone said hold my beer.
Check window light must be defective.
Its that hood music 😂😂
Gotta love it !! This is why I watch so many of Rainman Ray's videos.
Ray : Let's find the right size plug to fit these holes........There, that's one...
Also Ray : After killing mosquito and searching, trying every size left in vain, Grabs the bag the plugs came in - SHOVES BAG IN HOLE.....There, that's the other one.
And As A Special Bonus: Wife Unit eradicates Rainman with a haunting sound from the distant past. Sending our hero into a blinding rage, running for the hills in a futile attempt to maintain his sanity !!
Many moons ago I had a similar issue on an Alfa. convoluted pipe downstream of the AFM was split, no spare available. I cleaned it thoroughly, inside & out, applied some silicone then over-wrapped it with self-amalgamating tape. Not ideal, no, but that bodge lasted for years and was still working just fine when I scrapped the car for parts.
Make sure the cyclone valve in the back is ok. That and the butterfly on the backside of the intake will make a huge difference. If you need an IAC, good luck. Also the easiest way to smoke those is one of those EZ Intake bladders from Redline. So much less aggravation and 100 percent coverage from intake boot to brake booster to purge valve. It's totally worth the cost of entry
I gotta say, I enjoy seeing and hearing yours and Lauren’s interactions! Seems real and refreshing! I enjoy all of your channel but wanted to hone in on that. Keep up the good stuff man!!! You encourage and entertain many! 💪🏼👊🏻👍🏻
I love these old bimmers! I myself own a e34 as well. Beautiful and great cars but with age they need a lot of love (wich they deserve imo).
On hidden bolts like the one you had, I use a little tape to taper the fastener to the tool I’m using for install. It holds the bolt then when you remove it…most of the tape comes with the tool. I work on elevators…at times I have many hidden fasteners. Live confidently and peacefully
Doodly-Doo! What a hoot! Dave was looking at him like Ray was a crazy man. 😁
Brilliant solution to opening that D4MN clamshell packaging - the most dangerous substance known to man!
Congratulations then! A week, or so, after mine! I am just 71 now!
I’ve owned 5 of these cars, all straight 6 even the 3.5, but I had 3 problems i just bought a newer year as per my wallet, 1 was a fuel pipe at the rear of tank. Which leaked when I filled to the top, 2 was the left hand side has some car brain fault, this was due to a blocked the drain, easy fix. 3rd was the worst was the 3.5 as I just out run to a 2.9 ford Granada I had to turn off and straight away I heard a bad noise, I broke a rocker on a exhaust valve, me and my did the job was not to tricky. Happy Belated Birthday 🎉
Check your throtle cable too tight, and those nickle silicone blocks were notorious for rough idle due to pitted cylinder walls but over all a good presentation ⁰...love the claw hammer from a retired BMW tech of 38 years
Ex 318ti compact owner, 96 I think. Don't know why I sold it!
For difficult screws that are round, use an odd piece of hose that will fit over it and hold it to squiggle it into place, thread it in and pull the hose off.
Hey Ray, easiest way to make any size plug is with dollar store balloons. Inflate to slightly larger then the hole and plug the sucker up. Its the only universal, multi fit plug on the market, and its cheap and always in stock!
Much love my brother, Trolled by Loren was perfect! You're the perfect u tuber. We learn and we laugh .
So glad to see that you do and can work on Das Autos….. life is good with the doodly dooos making a comeback.
The tape fixes it long enough for the part to show up . Victory !
That doodley doo in this video was amazing, takes me back to your early videos.
So weird to see the steering wheel on that side of that car. No experience of the V8, but I have lots of experience of the straight sixes in 2.0 small and large block, 2.5 and 2.8 form. That interior looks so familiar, but backwards.
In my opinion, the E34 was the peak of the 5 series development and it’s been all downhill ever since.
AvE would be proud!
Happy belated birthday Ray. Hope you had a great evening. Keep up the great content. Thanks.
The PVC insulation tape is short term plug.
A 'fix' would be a quality heatshrink tube, glue lined even. Quality, like Raychem stuff made for high voltage electrical terminations.
Dorman usually makes hard to find replacement air intake tubes for a variety of car brands. I know people hear Dorman and think yuck, but they do make some decent non electronic components. The air intake tube and the timing belt covers on my late 90's Honda are both Dorman. The intake tube, the only thing I could find was a Dorman part, or a used one. And I could have gotten OEM timing belt covers from Honda, but all 3 covers was going to be around 450 dollars, and I got the Dorman set of 3 covers for around 75 bucks. Granted, the fitment on the lower timing belt cover wasn't exactly perfect and I had to do some minor modifications to it. But at least my freshly rebuilt engine looks good and I don't have an exposed timing belt like so many people do for some reason.
Yep Happy B-Day. Also, use the term Bimmer to refer to BMW automobiles and use Beemer (or Beamer) to refer to BMW motorcycles.
Guys when you have the smoke machine connected and block the throttle body you have to give the crankcase a way to let the pressure out if not you can blow out the crankshaft seal and that would be bad, don't just pull the dipstick the reason for that its tube may go below the oil level so that if you don't put the dipstick in fully you don't create an Evap fault. Saying this from experience.
Ah! I love Eric at I do Cars! Such great info on his channel. You two are like the two new Car Guys... (RIP the Tappit Brothers).

Having a 740i with the same M60 engine, this hits close to home.
Same stripped bolt, same hole in the intake tubing, add to this the engine suddenly cutting at 5000 rpm, the cooling issues and the same headliner panel falling off because the tabs broke.
Oh and the bushings.
And all kinds of oild leaking from everywhere.
Just old BMW things
AVE would be so proud of that unboxing.... although points should be deducted for not yelling ‘TIME’ at the end 🤣
The 2.4 Chrysler world engine has an issue like this too. I had one where the intake manifold didn't leak but there was a leak at the valve cover gasket. Whenever i sprayed starter fluid on one spot it would have a misfire. But 9/10 its the intake manifold gasket.
FLEX SEAL TAPE... WORKS AMAZING...
‘Do not ever rely on electrical tape to fix intake manifolds that are leaking.’ He’s right! The new stretchy silicone stuff that sticks to itself is waaaayyy better! 😂🤣😜. Kidding of course!
Self-amalgamating tape.
Happy birthday Ray!!! Lot's to celebrate this year!!! That BMW is a ticking time bomb, get it out of your sights ASAP!!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAY!😊😊😊😊 That chinese car looks like a FORD Fiesta and a YUGO had a baby.
i had the same problem with a hole in my intake hose just like that - bigger actually as i could put my 4 fingers through it. I duct taped it til my new intake hose arrived. Problem was fixed immediately for the short term with the duct tape. I was getting maf type issues. Once i pulled the intake house i realized why. Not enough air getting across the maf
Happy B-day Ray! Mine was the 15th lol. Keep up the great work, I watch you every morning while I'm getting ready to leave for work so Thank you
I think that's the m60 later to be replaced by the m62, I just did the timing chain and guides on my 03 x5 and oooh baby that engine is smoothe.
