@tradde11 I have mixed feelings on an engine flush as I bought a not so well maintained car years back it was running great no oil burn it was perfect then my mechanic recomended a flush and the engine seized in 1000miles! All the gunk had ended up blocking the oil pick up and it starved of oil😭

@tradde11I’m certainly not a mechanic handy but no technical knowledge a double flush may get clean enough that it can’t cause other issues but really what problem is it causing anyway? Poor maintenance has already caused more wear and tear but keep up proper maintenance and it should keep on rolling along. I may have taken some brake clean to the solenoids instead of replacing them as if it doesn’t work it’s no big deal to then replace them that confirms I’m not a mechanic😂

52:14 don't forget about the throttle body hose clamp.
With that sludge i would be worried the VVT oil control valve screens or filters would be clogged. One per cylinder head. I definitely would of pulled off the timing chain inspection cover to look at the tensioner and thats a good view for sludge as well. Great video Ray.
I would have replaced the oil control valve filters as well. Part number 15678-31010. Cost around 10 bucks each. These are often overlooked on Toyotas.
Gold comment, clean them as least right? prob sensors cleaned with brake cleaner or gasoline will work fine as well.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the term "try-agnostics" versus "diagnostics"! Your approach to fault isolation is exactly what every technician should be practicing... always try the simple stuff first and most importantly, run the machine and look and listen to it!

It's great when you find the goo, a reason for the codes, and a confident fix. I suppose, if it was your own vehicle, you could spend a happy few hours with a solvent, getting slightly high, while cleaning it all out. (Always use solvents in a well-ventilated area. As we always do, don't we.)

First oil change, old filter was Fram.
At the risk of sounding judgmental, this vehicle has been a garage queen. Evidenced by the Optima Red Top battery, K&N air filter, and sludged oil passages.

People buy these things because they're more worried about vanity than actually taking care of their vehicle! They'll spend double or more on a filter or battery but won't pay for an oil change because it's not something they find important
I had this same problem with my wife's Corolla. Since the four cyl. is more accessible I was able to remove the solenoid and just clean it in solvent and replace it. Good to go! another great video!

With jobs like this I like to show the customer (usually my missus) a picture of the new part and then show them the old part. It drives home the state of the damaged/imparied part and they tend to feel much better about having spent the money to effect the repair. Lots of "Holy crap, you were right! That's wrecked." etc.
It's getting to a point these days, that you should take a scantool with you when car shopping.
100% need to take a scan tool. Even a cheap $20 reader to check if the codes were cleared recently. Once you buy a used car, it the new owners problem when that CEL comes on
Just keep some trash parts around to show customers - same effect. Customers don't know 99% of the time when being duped on parts.
I took a scan tool when I purchased my last truck. You find out real quick who is honest. I ended up buying another truck from the dealer of the first one because of the relationship built. Of the 7 dealers I delt with 3 I could trust. The rest ... You have to be your own advocate. The dealer rarely has your best interest in mind.
Man, that's a lot of sludge. I would probably have stuck a borescope down in there to see what kind of sludgy junk is in that engine. Someone wasn't a good oil changer when it was time for that kind of build up. Would be a good idea maybe to run some BG flush and change the oil a couple of times and maybe clean out some of that gunk. I've seen other vids from you and a few others changing out actuators but never seen that much residue. Wild. Thanks for taking us along. Take care.
If you have sludge at those valves there is sludge elsewhere in the engine

I would definitely do a oil flush because of that burned on sludge just think what else could be starting to clogg such as main bearings, lifters, oil pump ect.
You really should recommend the BG oil flush, and the sooner, the better. That sludge build-up can damage other things. Tell customer and let them decide.

I would DEFINITELY go for an "oil conditioner" or two in that and engine. The sludge you found there is just a symptom of a generally bad situation.
Excellent video Ray! As a 2008 FJ owner since new, I really liked your diagnostic rationale and simple to understand repair procedures. There does seem to be a few red flags i.e. A known reliable Yota 4.0 1GR-FE engine with potential other sludge issues? Does anyone think this might have been a 08 FJ that sat for a long time? or perhaps long oil change intervals? Brand new paint and newer aftermarket radio? Hopefully, the FJ, Taco, and 4RNR forums will put this video in their respective trouble code libraries. A strong takeaway is to always get a pre-purchase inspection or proactively offer one to a new buyer. I recently privately sold a 2013 Accord with a $150 PPI purchased via a Honda Dealership. The new owner was appreciative and said he will do the same when he sells his Ford -F150. Always keep it honest and feel good.

Eric, from I DO Cars would say that those valves catch the 'sparkles' and are a good measure of engine health. I would say that this car has been 'cleaned up to sell' and that it has been poorly maintained. I would do a complete engine flush as a minimum but who knows what hidden damage is waiting to haunt the customer. If that crap is floating around in the oil still, then these new valves will fouled up soon.

Sometimes he does this so we can say reeeee! I noticed the clamp screw too, but forgot about the zip ties!!
Plus a miss on the wipening of the grease off the hood the last time he shut it even though he wiped it with a paper towel every other time :)

Very interesting and educational diag and repair. Sorry to see the sludge on those actuators. As you said that you'd have liked to run some BG engine cleaner in to address it, since it's most likely all through the engine. Too bad that a low mileage and nice looking vehicle had such poor maintenance to cause that at that low mileage. Maybe it would be advisable for the owner to avail the cleaner service soon since this is a new purchase. Thanks again for another in your quality videos.
Never say yes to scam callers, as they record your responses and use it against you.

Thanks for that bit of information cause most who answer the call are asked is this so in so and your response is either yes or no. Best thing is if the number isn't known or properly identified in caller id ignore. If you getting calls from the same area code but sum numbers change its computer generated phone numbers. The call is coming from India

So what caused the actuators to clog up so bad at 50k? Is it a lack of oil changes? The oil looked recently changed but it could possibly been neglected, no way of knowing by just checking the dipstick.
Very curious... You fixed the issue but seems the cause works still be there and clog the new actuators.

You are correct, o-rings only need to be replaced when they have gotten hard, inflexible and hard. But....I often replace them on locations that are difficult to access. Better to be safe than sorry. Thank you again Ray for a enjoyable video. I look forward to seeing you work on a Subaru one day. Florida doesn't have many Subies like we do up north ! Half the vehicles here are Subaru's or Jeeps.
I am disturbed by the sludge level on those solenoids. That screams improper oil change intervals, like crazy. At 50 thousand something miles, I think the new owner might have something to worry about. Who knows what other effects such maltreatment has had on that engine. Scary.
Im guessing that was run without oil changes until it was up for sale. Good candidate for a cleaning.

Unfortunately, with that amount of abuse, the sludge can stop up the oil pump pickup and kill the engine. I have seen that scenario several times. Never buy an older used car with very low miles with no proof of oil changes.
Awesome job, Ray. You are one of very few who actually THIK through a problem instead of throwing parts at it. I learned long ago that the first rule of troubleshooting is to understand how the system works. Anyone who doesn't is wasting time and money.

I agree you definitely need to know how a system is suppose to work to troubleshoot problems with it. Then it comes down to a systematic process of elimination to what component is causing it not to work as designed. Which is what Ray did here.

It's a shame that the FJ Cruiser isn't made anymore. I always wanted one however we could do without variable valve timing. I thought that it might be a ill maintained situation. Fresh oil change...

I've always liked the look of the FJ but I couldn't own one. The drivers visibility is crap. Such big blind spots all around.
As for VVT, l'm not sure you can find many engines without some form of variable valve timing after 2000 or so. Certainly not from the last 10 years.
@@ORRadtech I'm a veteran concrete truck driver of thirty five years so I'm used to working my mirrors and I'd fit right in on the FJ. If I need to back up I just have to keep situational awareness and get out and check behind me if needed and often times I'd position my vehicle to have a way out and to keep an eye on people and things.
It is somewhat concerning that those actuators got that bad in only 50k miles. Could that be a bad quality oil thar would cause that, or just a badly designed part? Keep up the great work Ray and Dave of course. 🇬🇧
I would guess that the oil was never changed. Except for the recent one. That was a lot of sludge.
The best part in the world is gonna have a difficult time dealing with that amount of sludge

The oil was changed probably once since new and then right after it was sold. I would have flushed that engine at least 10 times. What a pity, truck looks brand new

Also, Toyota says 10,000 mile oil changes are ok............NOT SO!
I recommend 5,000 mile oil changes and ONLY synthetic oil and in the vehicle viscosity rating.

My sister was buying a car and I have a scan tool. I looked over the car and said, "I think this one is good. let's get it looked at by a mechanic".
My sister tried to tell me no, she wanted to get it. After a while I said, "Fine". 3 months later, the transmission is now "shaking".
Ray, your diagnostic skills are freaking incredible. I've been with you now for over a year and with everything I've seen, I would trust you completely with any car I had. In fact, if you told me that I wasn't driving a Mazda and was driving a Nissan, I would believe you. LOL

No, they do not do engine flush as part of a routine oil change?
Looks like they never changed the oil or very rarely did. Mine had over 250k miles on it and had no sludge in it when I pulled the valve covers off. Changed the oil with Mobil 1 every 5k to 7k since new.

I would say that engine has a bunch more than 50 thousand miles. That vehicle was probably bought from a Dealer it was detailed and they did a nauti thing to the odometer.
Time for a BG cleaning.

older vehicles with LOW mileage means they never ran enough to be driven like 6 months of every year awaiting repairs
I bought an older low mileage car and had nothing but problems with it the first year I owned it. Now I have it all straightened out but it was a pain in the butt.

I recently worked on a 08 FJ funny I had the same codes and when I pulled those solenoids out after fighting with them for 30 minutes they both were plugged solid with sludge. Flushed the oil system with cleaner and did double oil change it cured the problem. Wish you would have made this video a month ago would have saved me time changing them. Lol great video keep up the great work Ray
I think getting an inspection before you buy is a better idea. Time for a BG Dynamic Engine Treatment.

Thank you! You made it possible for a mechanical neophyte to find my solution. The most memorable thing I remember you saying was something like "Don't throw parts at a problem, instead analyze the problem."
I began with the swap of the camshaft sensors, after first cleaning the codes P0006 & P0335. But before I even got that far, upon taking out the Bank 1 sensor I was astounded to discover the amount of grease covering it (I wish I could post the pictures that I took - just horrible!).
Since I'd read that the only thing that these failed sensors report is that they aren't getting data, I figured that all it needed was a good cleaning - just a wipe down, no solvent. Then, taking out the Bank 2 sensor I discovered it in a similar state and cleaned it too. Then I swapped them, also cleaned the dirty throttle body while I was there, and restarted the engine. Knowing the computer had to adjust for the newly cleaned throttle body, I let it run for about 10 minutes until it came down to normal idling. On that startup and for several since then, plus about 30 miles of mixed driving, the computer has reported no codes and the CEL light has not re-lit. Further, a buddy of mine with a full-service shop hooked up his full-featured computer and also showed no codes.
'I'm invested in doing things the hard way'.....probably the motto of all good mechanics everywhere.

Agree with several of the other poster's comments regarding the lack of proper oil maintenance as being the contributor to the valve failure(s). Would have been nice to see the difference between the scan tool's VVT readings following valve replacement as compared to the initial readings. But, in the end, problem solved. Well done sir, well done.
