M&M Go Record Shopping

  • AnalogPlanet editor Michael Fremer went record shopping with contributing editor Malachi Lui in Portland, Oregon. Yes, we had fun. We had almost as much fun, maybe as much, visiting Woodblock Chocolate, but that video is for another time. But here’s a fun fact: after that visit we stopped at a Goodwill and one of the first records we found there was a “Living Stereo” record called “The Chocolate Soldier”!!!!!!

    M, "That's a bootleg."
    M, "It is?"
    M,"Yeah, it's a bootleg."
    M, "You sure?"
    M, "Yes. It's a bootleg."
    M. "Don't say it so loud".
That was hilarious and telling of how sharp that kiddo is...

Michael, you have tought me so much about what to look for when buying records. Even though i can't really afford anything fancier than a pro-ject carbon arm acrylic platter thing with a 2m red element, your commments and guidance concerning record care and finding the best cut to your taste makes a world of difference. A big thank you from Amsterdam, Maarten.

MAYBE YOU CAN MAKE A MOVIE where you review his hifi system, and help him with tweks and so on ..... maybe you yourself have a few different pieces left over that you can do without. I love the fact that a young man is so into this hobby as much as he is. Also your comment about “ it’s a great record for $6, I’m sure it’ll play good enough” I sounds like it came for any of us. I mean a man that gets a lot of great records given to him for review can still get as excited about a cheap record as I do, shows we are all kindred spirits in this great hobby. Awesome.

Another great video Michael, 1- you need to put your record list on your phone or a tablet something you can carry around & look to see if you have it or not. 2- Was there a Food Court on the 3rd floor in that record store LoL!! If your ever out in New York or Long Island area I'd love to go record shopping with you one day too..

    • @paulc5358
      @paulc5358 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@Malachi Lui Yes I did see quite a few video's of Michael with his record collection in the background so yes I will agree, But a list for me was very essential and I needed it granted I only got 4,300 LPS not as many as Michael has. I only did it because I got tired of getting doubles and trying to remember what I had, and putting it on the phone thing well it just made life easier when I went to conventions or record stores. Never the less it was a great video & I'm glade to see the young people shopping for records & getting into the music you got some really good finds and that King Crimson album your going to love it!!! Enjoy Happy Spinning..

White’s was on the south side of Sunrise Hwy right where 27A branches off 27 in Massapequa. Sunrise Mall is across from it on the north side.
They had a great record dept.
A Jerry Lewis double cinema opened next to it in ‘72.
In that same shopping center you also had Crazy Eddie’s and The Wiz come and go. Bought a lot of audio equipment from both.

      @fhussain44 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Malachi Lui I understand, but I think removing them this way has some risk the record might get scratched against the cover. That's why I first remove the inner sleeve, then remove record, then put record back in inner sleeve, then inner sleeve back in cover..

I became a Music Millennium customer upon moving to Portland way back in November of '76, just in time for the Punk and New Wave explosion. MM, along with a number of smaller shops in Downtown Portland, was selling the UK 7" 45's I was looking for. I left Portland for Los Angeles in October of '78, where I lived until moving back to Portland three years ago. Much to my amazement, I found Music Millennium still in business, and in the exact same location! It is once again my main record store, and on this year's Record Store Day the line to get in the front door was three blocks long at 8:00 A.M.! In these past three years, every time I'm at the shop the floor space devoted to LP's has been greater than the last. When I was in Portland during December of 2009 (both my sisters live here), all the LP's were on the upper mezzanine, the street level rooms all devoted to CD's. My how things have changed!

Anyways, keeping up the superiority complex and elitist mentality does nothing for the hobby. Furthermore, how will the whole audiophile community expand if people, like you, keep making the objective from the subjective?

@Malachi Lui You're not being an elitist? You literally called a woman with a dis an idiot and told her to get out of here. Learn to be polite, kid.

Great video. My two favorite records stores here in PDX!
Did you ever spin Dave Mason’s Alone Together that Michael gave you? I was 12 in 1970 when it came out. It’s Still one of my favorite records.
As for Kanye, I like what I have heard of his music. I’m a huge Neil Young fan and not everyone likes him but music is a very personal thing.....if you like it and it moves you is all that matters. Ignore the haters!!

@Malachi Lui Alone Together is full of great songs. Two of my favories are the acoustic World in Changes and the electric Look at you, Look at Me.
I was your close to your age when I started buying records in 1970. Have you listened to much of Neil Young? Also from 1970 Neil's After the Goldrush is another all time fav record. Highly recomended.

Must hear the Acoustic Cowgirl in the Sand and also On The Way Home.

I have my original copy I bought in 1970, but it’s in horrible shape. I also have the 180g NYAS version which is mint.
I sold all my records two years ago right before we moved to Portland from SF. Only kept a few records and Goldrush was my first NY records. Neil has continued to produce great music all theses years. Unlike guys like Dave Mason. Lucky my favorite artist has had such a huge number of great records.
Check out the NYA archives too. All his music in high res.for $19.99 a year. Plenty available for free too. He’s playing an acoustic show on May 17 in Portland. I can’t go because my son is graduating from college in LA on the 18th. Going to see him in Eugene the following week.
Btw, the guy in Crossroads plays complications which I think are on CD’s. Don’t tell Michael!

Some of these records were so cheap that it makes me wonder how much they would pay the seller for them.

@Malachi Lui It's a thrill to hear back from you, I have read most of your published writing in the last year.
As a parent and grandparent, I wish three things for you in this world:
May you have a long life,
May you make a career out of doing what you love (including writing for the audio and music industry),
      and
May you never actually meet your heroes.
      Excelsior!

Think they went out of business. At one point around 2001, they bought up a chain of record stores in Southern California and ran them into the ground within about 2 years.
