    I appreciate you showing what it can do when pushed. I won't run into anything like that in Chicago, but nice to see how the other half lives. I bought it for pretty esoteric reasons like fuel economy, step in height, grocery capacity, warranty, and cost. I think it's a nice looking car as well, which doesn't hurt. I'm coming from a second generation CRV and after 4 months, I love this car! Please keep up the informative videos.

    Found this very helpful, I will never put my Seltos in that level of off road testing as i wanted something safer in the wet and able to cross a grass paddock without getting stuck on a bump or incline, i felt you tested it just on the edge of its capability and now i know what i could expect from my AWD Seltos when it arrives should i get it in a position of traction loss on a highway shoulder or steep driveway. It will achieve everything and more that i will ever throw at it. Cheers!

    Is this the SX trim with DCT? Transmission heating was perhaps because of the DCT?
    Have you faced any issues while using in the DCT in city conditions? - slow moving traffic, uphill/downhill drives?

    • @EngineAdventures

      It is the DCT, and yes the heating was because of that. I didn't notice any issues driving around town and in the mountains here. I wasn't in any stop and go traffic though.

    Missing from this review:
    1) Was the traction control on or off during the climb? If it was turned on/off, when?
    2) Smelled burning DCT clutch?
    3) What mode was the vehicle in when performing 0-60 run. Others (Magazines & TH-cam reviewers) have reported both faster and similar times as you. 0-60 times vary over 1 second depending on who does the testing. Some are getting around 7 seconds while others are getting around 8. All tests other than the auto magazines lack a methodology.
    4) I wouldn't call what you did offroad testing being it only tested the vehicle against one obstacle type.
    5) This climbing test with a Seltos SX has been often enough to know the 7 speed dry clutch DCT is it's weak point. The results are predictable at this point. Nobody has attempted this test with a Seltos EX with the 2.0 AWD/ IVT (CVT) combo. If you want to break new ground in your testing, ask Kia to get you one of these (or an LX AWD) and repeat this test. Nobody seems to have done this yet.
    You test was as good as other tests I've seen on TH-cam. The only points missed were discussed were more details on what settings were applied.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      1) Traction control was on for all of the tests in the video. I tried it off camera with traction control off and as expected one front wheel and one rear wheel slipped stopping it from climbing very quickly.
      2) "Transmission temp is high! Stop safely" was displayed in the DIC on the gauge cluster. I didn't notice any smell.
      3) Normal mode. I was going slight uphill at 4,600 ft elevation. I didn't apply the brakes to build boost beforehand either. I left a lot on the table, but it was more indicative of everyday driving.
      4) It was off-pavement on a dirt/gravel road. Doing the articulation test helps show how each mode affects throttle and the traction control. That in turn helps determine which mode is best in sand, mud, snow etc. without having all of the elements at hand to test in. Of course various tests in all conditions would be much more informative and effective.
      5) I'd love to test the other models. In my experience CVT's also struggle (see my Subaru Outback video or Nissan Murano), but yes other transmission types can do better depending on gearing and tuning.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

      I just wanted to mention something about the acceleration coming from a hard driver. it seems not consistent to be honest, coming off a gravel side road onto a highway this thing slams you into your seat. Turning right from a dead stop on a paved road and pressing the throttle to the floor a bit slower and omg you will take 8 sec to get to 60. I am figuring out that this motor requires boost knowledge and when its in its sweet spot it will rip forward much faster than expected. Sport mode makes it the most consistent and predictable.

    I Just took my Seltos SX T off road around Zion Utah, I didn't hit any steep grades that were over 50', we had no problems and trans handles the slate rock. After I hit a little over 2k miles I no longer smelled any transmission like I did when it was new. Only upgrade I have is air intake, and 17 inch steel wheels running Toyo open country A/T III 225x60 17 ,these tires worked better than expected going through a sand wash also. I want to keep the MPG about where it is but would like to improve torque a bit more down low. ill do some more research there. Other wise, its a very versatile little rig with good room and still narrow for some light trails to get to the scenic spots. For the noise I made a sheet of light weight foam that runs along the rear floor board and a piece cut to fit under the trunk floorboard over the spare tire and quality tinted windows all helped the road noise a good amount. For our long all day drives and light off rod tours nothing other than the ford Bronco Sport came close to winning my money, Bronco was too much money and worse on fuel. So I got this Selot's fully loaded minus the mud flap, with the sun roof option and pearl white paint an paint protection for 28,333. USD out the door, no other brand came close. This was through Costco. FYI they make you get the paint protection option.

      @@EngineAdventures it overheats when you let it roll backward. Use your brakes.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It overheats when the clutches slip when there is pressure on them. Yes rolling backwards a little doesn't help, but there really isn't that much pressure on them at that point otherwise the engine would stall. The real heat and wear comes from climbing the hill but not being able to go fast enough for the clutches to fully engage. The clutches have a ton of friction in them and are slipping while trying to get enough power out to the wheels to climb the hill. They can't fully engage otherwise the engine will stall, but they have to keep pressure in an attempt to move forward.

    Treat the DCT like a manual, dont load on the clutches like its a torque converter, thats why it gave you a warning. If you drive with a tiny bit of momentum and try not to crawl below 2-3mph its gonna be a tank.

    • @moonsapling
      @moonsapling 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@darvelbidenisapuppet7275 true!
      Many people test drive the car saying it is "jumpy", but I like that. And over time it become less jumpy when the clutch learns your style.
      Also 1st gear in the dry 7DCT is very low ~3.60, and the final drive ratio is also very low ~4.60. That means the clutch barely slips before it engages and enables the car to climb hills really well.
      All you have to do to not overheat the transmission is to not lay on the clutches. A bit of momentum and ESP off goes a long way.
      Ive been studying transmissions quite a lot and have even disassembled one of the 7DCT units. If you have any questions feel free to ask me!

    • @moonsapling
      @moonsapling 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@phxlightz9150 ESP is the Electronic Stability Control. Together with TCS(Traction Control System) It takes the job of preventing your can to spin out in slippery conditions. It works by cutting engine power or individually applying brakes to slipping wheels.
      In offroad situations however when you drive say in mud, loose dirt, sand, snow it is better to turn ESP and TCS off. This way your ECU wont cut power from the engine and will not apply brakes, allowing wheelspin and full power.
      It is also a good idea to put the transmission in 1st gear manually because as I stated earlier, 1st gear is basically a low gear for the 7DCT.
      You can turn ESC and TSC via a button in your car.

      Why...this isn't marketed as a serious off road vehicle and if you need one and are looking here you've made a wrong turn. This will do what people who buy it need to. Be capable in wet/snow conditions, be able to travel along gravel roads...end.

    Why do you testers never put offroad tires on these AWD cars? Realistically someone intended to go offroad wil swap the tires.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are media loans that I only have for a week. Tires would help, bit the faults on the system and still there and that's what I try to show with my testing. Even with the best tires it wouldn't have made the hard line.

  • @mbruno64

    Tires!

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tires can make a huge difference when offroading, but in this particular test the tires aren't that important. This test is all about how the vehicle transfers power to the wheels with traction. Basically two diagonal wheels end up in the air with zero traction, meaning the vehicle has to be able to move enough torque to the other two wheels on the ground to move the vehicle up the hill.

  • @caaiereyez849
    @caaiereyez849 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Change the tire.. its on road tire and its not a serious off road SUV..

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A better tire would have helped a little, but the same limitations of the traction system are still there. The main goal of my channel is to test how the traction systems work. In this case when climbing a steep grade with two wheels losing traction it will struggle, no matter how good the tires are.

    I cannot understand why auto manufacturers get away with using brake vectoring only?! To me, that's not a true awd like torque vectoring would be!!!

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While I agree with you on some level, it does have a great cost savings (vehicles already have ABS and it uses the same system) and simplicity.

    some1 put it on 3 rollers and see if 1 wheel will move it

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theoretically it would, and I think it would on flat ground. If the slope is too steep it would really struggle and probably wouldn't make it.

    Just need better tires....

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While having the right tires for the terrain certainly helps, that's not what the limiting factor was for the Seltos. In this testing two diagonal tires are pretty much left in the air, or very close to it. Even the best tires won't give you traction in that situation. The AWD system couldn't get enough torque to the other two wheels with traction to make the climb.

    • @aronjohn84
      @aronjohn84 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EngineAdventures ...hmmmmm I understand that. But better tires would. I have a 2015 durango and I understand how the AWD system works and I'm also in the jeep family. Your passenger front tire was spinning. If you had better tires you most certainly could have done better. Now...I don't expect you to take a car your reviewing and switch out tires on it, just point out the fact it would have helped significantly. It's it the best awd system no..no its not hell the ridgeline had a far better awd system along with Subaru ..Audi and so on. But not comparing this to them. This is a good review with your standard city driver that thinks they will be invincible. . Lol which they would be wrong 😆

      Very true, but doing these tests also helps understand how the AWD system works and how it may perform in bad weather or for the occasional time drivers find themselves in a tough spot.

    Not a 4wd vehicle! AWD is for slick road conditions, not off road.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, it's not designed for regular off-roading, but if there are only a few tough spots on your trail then this will likely get you there.

  • @Unknown-tq0ih

    Just make it a nice family car forget off road it's not built for that purpose it's a lifestyle car not an off roader

    • @EngineAdventures

      Very true, but knowing how well it transfers power will help those who occasionally end up somewhere unexpected. Check out Matt's Offroad Recovery for lots of examples of regular vehicles getting into some rough spots. The other benefit to this video is to teach people how the AWD/4wWDsystems work so that they can perform better as drivers in rough situations.

      I disagree, this hill is steeper and more difficult than it looks on camera. For what the Seltos was designed for I'd say it does just fine.

    • @EngineAdventures

      It is front wheel drive biased, but the AWD system is actually pretty good for bad weather. It wasn't designed for hard offroading and definitely can't handle really rough sections.

      Slippery conditions due to inclement weather is a very different beast than off roading. Also, "crap brand?" Leave your bias at the door, please. Kia has taken the top spot in the JD Power initial quality category SIX years running. It receives multiple such awards a year and the 2016 Soul won the 2019 award for most dependable Compact MPV.
