Clarification: The Seltos S is the trim that does not come standard with AWD. It comes standard on LX, EX, S Turbo, and SX Turbo, but optional on the S. :)
In February, I took my Soul in for an oil change, and saw this unknown-to-me Seltos in the showroom. I loved my Soul, but the Seltos solved the one issue I had with it - lack of cargo space with all seats up (wanted something to fit my golf clubs and more groceries). So, I ended up trading my Soul for a Seltos in 'S' trim with FWD (I preferred the better gas mileage to AWD, as PA weather isn't usually that bad, and when it is, I can just stay home). Basically, I got an oil change that cost me around 24k. Anyway, so far, I love the car. I got it in the same 'Mars Orange' shown in your review, and have gotten a number of compliments on it. I think the ONLY competition it has in this class when you consider interior and cargo space is the Suby Crosstrek. My wife has one of those, and it rides more smoothly than the Seltos, but I think the Seltos is a bit more comfy to sit in and I also can't easily get a fully-loaded golf bag in the Suby with all seats up. As for the Lane Keep Assist and Lane Following Assist, I set the Lane Keep Assist to just beep rather than nudge when I'm crossing over the line, and I rarely use the Lane Following Assist (the option that keeps you centered in the lane). Love having them both as options, and the ability to customize them or turn them off completely. I love the Kia and Hyundai warranties, but have yet to keep one for more than about 3 years. I see no reason I won't keep this Seltos much longer since it does everything I want a car to do. Thanks for the review.
I keep going back and forth between the Seltos and the Kona, can't quite make up my mind either way but I haven't driven either one yet. I'm sure that will be the tie-breaker. I like the extra height of the Seltos (it's actually larger in most ways than my 2001 RAV4) but this baby boomer doesn't need the extra space anymore and the Kona appeals to my eye a bit more. I sure wish I could get either one with a stick shift...Stay tuned.
Awesome reveiw. I thought you're some popular reviewer with a million subs, all because of the fun and quality of your review. Would love to see you rise. I can see you reveiewing all day like maybe doug. Pls do a review of top variant of seltos too
I don’t know if I’ll ever be in the market for a crossover/SUV, but I still really enjoy your reviews. Thanks for taking the time to make this, you did great.
Gen-Xer here and owner of a Seltos SX Turbo. Was looking for a vehicle that could handle my move to Colorado, in my 30k budget and was an improvement that was my then vehicle the sporty model of the Sentra (2011 SE-R Spec V). I honestly love what I got for the money so far. Love all the tech features in the SX trim.
Another Gen X-er and I’ve just ordered a Seltos GT Line downunder (comparable to the SX Turbo in the US, though not an identical spec). Test drove it and I just loved it. I Needed the rear seat and boot space without getting something too large and no other options in the class could match the Kia. Others might have nicer interior material finishes (Mazda CX30 is lovely) but if I can’t fit my family in comfortably then it really doesn’t matter and materials aside, I think the design and layout of the Seltos interior is excellent. Very logical, very intuitive and ergonomic.
So I ended up buying a 2021 Seltos. I was not initially a fan of the autosteer/lanekeeping. I've been a diehard basic not-smart-car driver to the point where I don't even like automatic door locks, but after driving with the autosteer in a long road trip I must say it helps significantly with reducing driving fatigue. All those tiny micro adjustments you don't realize you are doing in a normal car, adds up, and with this thing taking that task up for you, it really frees your energy up for actually paying attention to the road. At least that's how I feel about it now.
Your videos are extremely helpful! I like how you recap other comparable models, likes and dislikes at the end. I'm shopping for a small SUV with low road noise, fun to drive, powerful, good gas mileage, roomy interior front and back and roomy cargo. I liked the full size spare tire on one of the models. Thank you!
Dang, Kia loves making SUV's! And where is all the traffic when you got on the 14! Funny that you were talking about lane-keep and attentive driving at 12:11 when that Tacoma was needlessly intent on taking over your lane! Great review as always and fun jab with the beard conditioner!
I actually like how this crossover looks...What is wrong with me?? Especially because those headlights look like an Aztek. Great review dude. You're my sole source of keeping track with what new car buyers are actually looking for these days, and its a great overview to keep it all straight.
Agreed this probably is the sweet spot in kia’s cuv lineup. I am just super skeptical of a dual clutch combined with a direct injected turbo. That’s a lot of complicated systems in one car!
• Road Center System : good safety idea especially considering texting distractions. • You mentioned a bunch of crossovers, hmm wonder why you didn’t mention Subaru Crosstrek? Not comparable? Just wondering I know you can’t mention them all, nevertheless it seems to be most highly ranked in this category. • loved this review “ Hello Road” strong 💪
Thanks for watching! :) Crosstrek is certainly comparable! Just didn't want to make the compare section of the video too long. But it is an excellent choice in this segment, a great value. Main downsides are that it's pretty slow and cargo capacity is weak compared to the Seltos :)
Hello Road / Ethan Tufts thanks Ethan, my daughter is a Saucony running shoe salesperson in San Diego and absolutely loves her 2019 Cross Trek • I have a 2015 Kia Sportage, great dependability but kind of a Klunky ride. .. looking at a Lexus 350. Nevertheless, I have a Kia fondness. I always rent The Kia Hamster Soul when we visit... smooth 😅 • carry on my friend 👍
Great review on the Seltos! I'm 60 and love the hood on the Seltos, it is a commanding view! LOL Seriously considering the SX Turbo soon. I want the Nav & the Bose Audio. (With the mood lighting) Glad you mentioned a softer ride which I am interested in but was worried about the 18" wheel/tire set-up. We have a new 21 Forte LXS in the household so would like to make it unanimous with the Seltos.
I watched ,, almost every day car reviews, but I can say your attacks are way clever. I would like to suggest if you can feature FORD PUMA in your channel. More power and subscriber brother 👍
Lane keep etc is really a first step in autonomous driving. Most tech improves in stages. First they get the vehicle to stay in it's lane, next corrective actions, then steering itself for X amount of time. Now slowly increase range, incorporate gas/brake etc until we are there. I believe Seltos will be another big hit for Kia. More attractive than it's sister Kona IMO. A lot like Telluride VS Palisade. Hyundais designers are trying hard to be different, look at the big mouth bass - aka Sonata. Have you seen the new K5 (Optima) in comparison?
Ethan, you do a great job in these videos! I like your laid back, easy going style. I'm not a fan of DCT transmissions and would not consider purchasing the Seltos, though I do like the looks of it. If I were spending my hard earned money on an SUV, I would go for the Mazda CX-5 and second would be the RAV4 Hybrid. However, I'm frugal so I'll be staying with my 2012 Toyota Corolla with 115K on the odometer for a long, long time.
Look up offroad testing of this vehicle. On very minimal offroad courses (like just driving over small rocks / gravel) it struggles. It burns it's clutches. I was interested in this vehicle until I saw how poorly it did; and, how much it damaged itself with minimal terrain. It was literally smoking and burning up internal clutches. No thanks.
Yeah I saw a video about that scaring me off... Mazda’s do better for “dirt roading” but I think seltos might be best looking and value if you’re keeping it on paved roads, it’s sneakily big for its price to... but a sportage has locking differential and drives good in snow and ice I would know from driving one better off with sportage in my opinion
If you want to go off road, why would you buy this? That's a dumb argument for argument's sake. For an on road vehicle, this makes good sense. Get a jeep if you want to go off road.
Not a fan of this car class, in general----but I would probably buy a used Lexus UX over the Seltos. I don't hate the Toyota C-HR, but it has no sunroof option. Also interested in driving the Encore GX, too.
Kia's doing better than Hyundai with small crossovers designwise, this pulls off "aspirational" design well while the Soul ignores big/luxury CUV design cues and does its' own thing. By comparison the Hyundai Kona just looks odd - it doesn't help that the multispoke (almost lattice-looking) wheels on the volume selling trim level would be more at home on an Elantra GT or sedan - while the Venue looks cheap in the same way the Kicks does (and the Soul doesn't). Having mentioned it, props to Kia for sending you a mid-spec volume trim level instead of a fully loaded top of the line as a press car.
you keep saying the base model (LX) is the only one without AWD, completely not true, the S Model is the only one that comes in FWD but has many more features than the base model LX, we just ordered a new S model with the AWD option
I think a base sportage has better engine and better driving in snow and dirt roads then base seltos... don’t really see point of seltos unless they discontinue soul soon otherwise it’s just excessive...
Man, i can't stand the line assist. Once i tried an sport edition of the kia Rio. So i was searching the lines in the corners. It was very annoying that the system makes a sound everytime. Now i have an BMW e46 and It's just right. Sporty also some Luxury without all the tech nonsense.
The kicks, Is that Euro Market? They are trying to do another thing where they think the younger generation might be more inclined to purchase those. I think.
I wonder how expensive would be to bring a european car to the US. I was thinking about the Jaguar XJS, as a 90s car that should be in your collection (The model remained in the Jaguar lineup for almost 20 years with minor changes), and the only ones I have seen for sale in the US are for about 25-30k $, which is a lot higher than the european prices (You can find reasonable examples of the V12 for less than 10k$). Greatest problem of the XJS is their high fuel consumption, specially in the V12 version.
I don't know why he keeps comparing Seltos with Kona. Seltos is a full SUV and Kona is a small crossover. Kona in size is like Kia Niro, both crossovers. Seltos is an SUV way bigger than Kona and kicks. It actually has more torque and feels bigger.
You're right, they're not quite the same class. I do mention that Seltos is quite a bit larger than the Kona. But the prices are in the same ballpark, close enough that consumers may consider both.
Kia needs to upgrade transmission software with it's hurky jerky jumping surges, and a must to recalibrate suspension- Rocket your sockets off with stiff noisy ride. Wind noise is as loud as can be. Why? Roof rack rails and mirrors? Wicked poor design.
They're really similar! Slight edge goes to the Seltos for the turbocharged motor, and the interior. But overall I think I'd prefer the extra space you get with the Santa Fe. The Santa Fe also seemed to be a bit more composed on back roads. :)
Glad I'm not the only person to hate the Kicks name. It's so 1960s... 😏 It really is an embarrassing & stupid name. Mix that with Nissan's passion for reliability, and the buyers will line up for miles. Another great review. Thank you.
Looks like the perfect car for the average Karen. But she’s already complaining with the salesman about the lack of USB ports. Her kids deserve to have their iPads always charged.
If it's designed for millennials, does it not require oil changes, lifetime lightbulbs, and a cell phone holder that attaches to your crotch so you can text message while driving so no one thinks that's what you're doing?
Clarification: The Seltos S is the trim that does not come standard with AWD. It comes standard on LX, EX, S Turbo, and SX Turbo, but optional on the S. :)
I love the front end of this thing. Besides the Seltos itself, Kias are looking really bold, aggressive, and daring these days and I'm quite a fan.
I am a GEN X'r and I bought this for my wife...and it is a blast! the turbo hauls...handles awesome, and looks really good in Pearl white...
Was meaning to tell you very good job on editing and cinematography...you go all out someday you will have that 100,000 subs and I will be there!
Thank you, I appreciate it!! :) :)
Ahaha I'm a babyboomer and I love this car. Got the SX turbo loaded, in White, lots compliments!! and getting 33 mpg without trying wow..
I think this was a weird decision. They already have the Niro. They should have brought back the rondo name and made this a Subaru Outback competitor.
This is a great looking car, quite a bargain for what it is too!!.
In February, I took my Soul in for an oil change, and saw this unknown-to-me Seltos in the showroom. Purchased a Tutone blue with white roof last week, love it . Good looking well built care with plenty of interior room!

Jaded Gen Xer here I just purchased an ss turbo model, can't wait to receive it.

I love new kia designs. They are bold and fresh... I don't like suvs at all, but it does look awesome! :)
I agree with you on the safety systems. I feel like people are going to rely too much on the technology and stop being as attentive as they should be.
Dang, Kia loves making SUV's! And where is all the traffic when you got on the 14! Funny that you were talking about lane-keep and attentive driving at 12:11 when that Tacoma was needlessly intent on taking over your lane! Great review as always and fun jab with the beard conditioner!
Headlights remind me of the last-gen Explorer.

Especially because those headlights look like an Aztek.
Great review dude. You're my sole source of keeping track with what new car buyers are actually looking for these days, and its a great overview to keep it all straight.
Come over to the dark side!!!
I would no joke love an Aztek. But that's about as close as Id ever get
Glad you enjoyed the review! Hope I can review a few cars that AREN'T crossovers! :) :) And an Aztek, I'm totally buying one.
The aztek are too expensive now...
Agreed this probably is the sweet spot in kia’s cuv lineup. I am just super skeptical of a dual clutch combined with a direct injected turbo. That’s a lot of complicated systems in one car!
And what happens when you overcomplicate a system? Problems come...
@Hello Road / Ethan Tufts I was hoping you were going to try and catch up to the MX-5.
• Road Center System : good safety idea especially considering texting distractions.

Personally the dual clutch transmission was the killer for me. I would have preferred the regular IVT transmission that's in the base model.
have you reviewed the kona? I'm comparing the two.. I'm getting out of the subcompact sedan world and moving up into a subcompact suv lol
Haven't reviewed that one yet. Hope to soon!
I watched ,, almost every day car reviews, but I can say your attacks are way clever.

How is it in comparison with the Jeep Renegade ?
Lane keep etc is really a first step in autonomous driving. Most tech improves in stages.

Nice presentation and good kia's product. Let's seltos one 😄😄😄

There is a icvt transmission with the base engine. It uses a chain instead of a belt like Toyota cvts.
I’d probably still opt for a Crosstrek!
Fantastic review you've put forward all the fact especially that millenial
I bought this but in canada we have a lot more with the ex premium
Please review Subaru Crosstrek 2021 Sport and Limited :-)

You're correct. I could have bee more clear. I was considering the S as a base model as well, since it starts at the exact same price as the LX.
Love your channel, glad to see it is growing! Your reviews keep getting better as well...LOOK OUT Doug Demuro!
Haha! Long way to go to reach 'ol Doug!! :)
LKA are a great wake up call for snoozing drivers.. over long distances, it can prompt you to stop for a break

Tech is fine, but in the right measure. I intend to have an android display and a 360º camera system in my next classic.
The kicks, Is that Euro Market? They are trying to do another thing where they think the younger generation might be more inclined to purchase those. I think.
They sell the Kicks in North America. Certainly targeting a younger crowd with that one :)

Short answer....It's VERY (if not prohibitively) expensive to bring vehicles that have not been certified for US sale into the United States.
It kind of looks like Škodas small crossover from the front
I don't know why he keeps comparing Seltos with Kona. Seltos is a full SUV and Kona is a small crossover. Kona in size is like Kia Niro, both crossovers. Seltos is an SUV way bigger than Kona and kicks. It actually has more torque and feels bigger.

Im sure you are at the point where people would let you review there old cars 80’s and 90’s Retro Rewind!
The front looks like a Škoda Kodiaq
They say they over heat but I still like kia
Kia needs to upgrade transmission software with it's hurky jerky jumping surges, and a must to recalibrate suspension- Rocket your sockets off with stiff noisy ride. Wind noise is as loud as can be. Why? Roof rack rails and mirrors? Wicked poor design.

Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!! :)
First thing I’m doing is blacking out all the chrome
I would not consider the Soul a crossover.
I don't either. But that's what everyone is calling it now.
Almost had me, KIA til I saw other reviewers overheat the transmission.
Overheat it while doing extreme activities not conducive to the health of the vehicle. *
Fixed your statement for you. No thanks needed.
Its definitely not bad looking, but the back is generic. Nice color, though!
As striking as it is overall, this car's color does the rear no favors since the main taillights blend into the bodywork.
👍 The best Car SUV KIA Seltos
4x4 Just for streets....do not take off road ...ever...dual clutch sistem overheating in a second and burn the clutch
Looks like the perfect car for the average Karen. But she’s already complaining with the salesman about the lack of USB ports. Her kids deserve to have their iPads always charged.
Seems like all cars should have rear USB ports, even on base models.
In India peoples pay much more than this varient.
If it's designed for millennials, does it not require oil changes, lifetime lightbulbs, and a cell phone holder that attaches to your crotch so you can text message while driving so no one thinks that's what you're doing?
Since when were kia’s millenial cars?
Since Kia's marketing department said so :)
Another kia burning clutch in traffic.
we have them in India they expensive only FWD, comes in like all 5 to 7 colors, its just ugly it has a decaying disease.
