Does the person ranked #1 automatically ref the most high profile match that week (assuming they're not excluded for the above reasons)?

Ok, straight away I see the problem. Referees being able to see where they rank on that Merit Table can severely influence their performance, decision making and willingness to make important calls. That should absolutely only be something that the organisers have access too.

There is no accountability to the public as fans keep wondering if they are being shafted by referees’ decisions. Referees should be mic’ed up like they did in the A league with one official. Let fans hear what is the thinking behind the decisions, their communication with the linesman and VAR. Also consider publishing these referee evaluations in order to determine PGMOL’s stance on decisions and whether they deem a referee’s decision correct or not. That could help reduce the heat on referees.

Refereeing is such a difficult profession, and having refereed locally for several years, I can’t imagine the hate from PL fans when getting a decision wrong. However, being a PL fan myself, I find my respect for referees declining. This season has been abysmal in terms of the utilization of VAR. The World Cup did it right, the PL does not.
