I have just finished the break in period of my 2021 Hyundai Veloster N DCT and the ngrin feature is a blast. This is my first DCT so I am still learning but it feels amazing. The last 3 cars I have owned have been 3 pedals and I have been waiting to see what this car would be like. I am so happy. Now that we're in mid 2022, and the Elantra N is out... I'm so conflicted. We get an extra 29 pd-ft of TQ, as well as that beautiful digital gauge cluster and infotainment. But the VN exterior is so much nicer. Also, in rolling races, even with the VN DCT having a tune vs the EN DCT, the EN still pulled away pretty easily compared to the VN. Now the tune was a pretty cheap to an apparently and a jb4 would have most likely given the Veloster N the win. But in many videos we're seeing the Elantra N pulling on tuned STIs and tuned s3s. But it's so damn ugly in my opinion even though I've never seen one up close. However I absolutely love it's customization, which is even a little more versatile than the Veloster N but not much more. I just love the idea of a black Veloster N and how mean it would look. Especially with a few minor aesthetic mods. I'm coming out of a mk7 Golf R which I have tuned and done full bolt-ons etc etc and I wanted to get something that came right out of the box without having to mod anything for performance. And the Elantra N DCT does that, whereas I would most likely end up doing a JB4 to the Veloster N to get it around 300 pound feet and just a little over 300 HP. Don't want to go overboard and overwhelm the chassis and it's natural feel. Anyway maybe if I go and check out a black Elantra N DCT it might hide some of the ugliness because I absolutely love that car so much in every other way.
I suspect the 2022 Veloster N's are underrated just like the Kona and Elantra N. I saw a video posted recently of a stock 22 Veloster N 6 speed on terrible tires running a 13.9 at almost 103 MPH. Now if you compare that with all the other videos of stock Veloster N's running the quarter, you'll see that they struggle to trap 100 MPH. There was also a TSB put out about oil capacity that included late year 2022 Veloster N's, and all Kona and Elantra N's. I assume they are all using the same engine now. I also got to test drive a Kona N, and it didn't feel as fast as my 22 Veloster N 6 speed. I'm sure it is faster because of the 8 speed DCT, but it didn't put me in my seat the same way my Veloster N does.
I watched you race around in the corvette yesterday, I think I liked this better. You get to ticket time so fast in the Chevy, that’s all I can think of, enjoying the way you drive..thanks bye the way are you just lucky or don’t they have any cops where you are
the only thing i like about the 2 pedal variant is how low the rpm's are at highway cruising speed. and while i'm happy more people can purchase this car that wouldn't otherwise with a manual trans, the 3 pedal variant has now become extremely hard to find as most dealers are only stocking the automatic.
@@TheTopher i've watched your manual & dct N videos probably a dozen times each. i test drove the DCT last weekend and it was extremely fun, but have not driven the manual (can't find one). my daily last 12 years has been an 09 scion tc manual, slow but fun to row your own (this will be a huge upgrade either way). if it was your money, which would you purchase? dct or manual?
Bro Hyundai is missing out on the 2dr coupe market!! If they can slam a V8 from the genesis & tune it right... It will sell The 3.8 gen was a really underrated car when it was out
Hey Topher, new sub here and watched lots of your content over the long weekend. Quick q - 3 cars stood out to me that u seemed to enjoy most 1) Cayman gt4, 2) Veloster N DCT and 3) ND2 Miata RF. All totally different. Which one did u enjoy hooning on the streets more? - all 3 are on my radar, lol.
Jaesik Yu They both have the valve but I believe that the fact that it shifts so much faster than anyone can is the reason it doesn't seem like it has as many pops and bangs. Maybe it is the tune, but my friend said that he noticed the exhaust was more lively after the first oil change.
If they had this in the UK it would be so tempting to buy one! You guys are very lucky with the price of your cars though, it would be significantly more here than it is for you (I'd guess another $7k ish)
I was selling Hyundai’s when this model came out. I was really excited about it at first. Then it proved to be a sales dog. Boy was I disappointed. Well, then they did a couple smart things. First, they hired Albert Bierman away form BMW’s M division and he started to work his magic! He took the Veloster off the accent platform and moved it to the Elantra sport platform with it’s independent rear suspension. Then he put that 2.0 turbo motor in it for some real power. I retired 5 years ago after 20 years in the car business. 15 of those years I sold high end luxury cars for Infinity, Jaguar, and Lexus. Then Obama came and messed with our economy and luxury cars sales stalled! I saw the 2010 Sonata and was blown away. Was this really a Hyundai? I moved to Hyundai in Downers Grove, Illinois (Pugi Hyundai) and was pleasantly surprised at how well they took care of my customers and Hyundai had really started to put out a great product!
For a father of two kids looking for a fun, yet practical hot hatch; would you recommend this over the Golf GTI?? As of right now I’m leaning heavily towards the GTI for its comfort and practicality, but man this Veloster N sure is making me reconsider my decision.
VN 2020 owner asking here... I"ve never been in a DCT. So are you using the paddles to shift? Do you have to? It'd be hard to switch from stick, but you have my attention. Thanks!
Some guys in Korea did pit Type R against Veloster N DCT in track, with the same tire and all. (though Type R used wider tire due to wheel specs) th-cam.com/video/eUZHENZfgAo/w-d-xo.html (Spoiler: VN wins) Both of them are professional drivers, and both cars are mostly stock. Something to note is here is that Type R driver couldn't turn the ESC and emergency break off, and that did interfere the race a bit.
I still want one of these even though I have a Volkswagen GTI. Do you think this would be a good trade in next year (yes I’m aware Hyundai no longer makes these, but I’m sure I can get a good deal on a slightly used model)
I bought a 22 dct about a month ago now. I daily it with about a 30 min commute twice a day, 5 days a week. Great ride. I can see where anywhere over a couple hours would be a bit much though. I had a 20 civic si before this. That was a very comfortable car to drive and to be honest, so is the VN.
We don’t have the Veloster here in Sweden. Hopefully the i30N with DCT will be as good as this one :) seriously considering it instead of an old Porsche hmm
That Elantra is so watered down... it’s just rebadged Elantra Sport ... I had a 2019 and it was nice but in the end it wasn’t all that sporty and very low on power. Meh very forgettable
How does the transmission on the DCT model work when in SPORT or N Mode, as far as shifting throughout the rev range? Is it left entirely to the driver to upshift and downshift at any desired point throughout the rev range (as if driving a true manual transmission), or does the onboard computer interfere with driver input at certain revs if no input is detected from the driver as is the case in many automatics with paddle shifters?
Any thoughts on this vs Type R? I'm looking between those two and I do not know which one to pick T_T. Also there is literally no 6 speed manual available in CA, nothing but DCT. Is the DCT seriously better than the 6S manual?
Comes down to price. The N is $34xxx. CTR is $40xxx. I’m choosing the N because I’m frugal. Hopefully in the next week or two. And 0% for 60 months, a no brained.
Fun fact: Hyundai/Kia their main goal is to take over European mArket, this car came to take vw spot and the French cars. If you miss driving a hot hatch... come to Europe, we have tons of hatches
I would just miss those massive pops you get out of the manual when shifting gears near redline, the dct doesnt seem to replicate them like the manual does because its so fast, other than that, i would honestly consider trading my 19 for a dct one, because of the better daily driveability, because lets face it, driving a manual is kind of annoying when youre not on twisty roads or doing performance driving
See if they make a pedal commander for your car it plugs in down by the gas pedal and makes the car a little faster off the line. Are you going to do the JB4 piggyback setup? The N grin is just a gimmick it should of came stock with that much torque have the same engine in my Gencoupe.
Topher how do I reconcile that some quality YT reviewers have differing opinions on the DCT- some say it's not as responsive in manual mode and they'd get the manual for sure and others say it's great. I will test drive this myself but can't for a while. I wonder how you feel about the responsiveness of paddle shifters for gear changes?
You can’t go wrong with either transmission, but this DCT is really well done. Paddle shifters felt great, no issues with response. The manual will be more involving and if you can snag a used one for cheap that wouldn’t be a bad way to go! This DCT definitely provides a more refined driving experience. Definitely would recommend driving both if possible and deciding from there.

Great headlights! Seems like a super fun car!
Probably around $100 worth of solid shifter bushings would likely make the manual perfect.
The DCT did really well on Daily Motor’s fuel economy test! That video should go live soon
@@TheTopher i've watched your manual & dct N videos probably a dozen times each. i test drove the DCT last weekend and it was extremely fun, but have not driven the manual (can't find one). my daily last 12 years has been an 09 scion tc manual, slow but fun to row your own (this will be a huge upgrade either way). if it was your money, which would you purchase? dct or manual?
honestly, its gonna be between this and the gr corrolla once that final comes to be my next car
Bro Hyundai is missing out on the 2dr coupe market!! If they can slam a V8 from the genesis & tune it right... It will sell
The 3.8 gen was a really underrated car when it was out
16:11 good launch..
Really...🔥😍 fantastic good car (with wet DCT transmission).👍🏼
Really good work!, Hyundai.👌🏼😎
Hey Topher, new sub here and watched lots of your content over the long weekend. Quick q - 3 cars stood out to me that u seemed to enjoy most 1) Cayman gt4, 2) Veloster N DCT and 3) ND2 Miata RF. All totally different. Which one did u enjoy hooning on the streets more? - all 3 are on my radar, lol.
you can swap dct exhaust with manual exhaust for more pops and bangs 👍🏼
Jaesik Yu
They both have the valve but I believe that the fact that it shifts so much faster than anyone can is the reason it doesn't seem like it has as many pops and bangs. Maybe it is the tune, but my friend said that he noticed the exhaust was more lively after the first oil change.
@@vaejoviscarolinanus they are confirmed 100% different. The DCT one has more dampening to it. It also has different exhaust hangers.
@@vaejoviscarolinanus they have different exhausts
Amazing car, i wish they would sell this in Europe too. Id take it over the i30n
It’s about time we got an exclusive! All the years we watched the type R and Focus RS laughing at us over seas 😂
i'd love to have a vs. with the new leon cupra, Hope one day you can drive one!
I'm looking forward to the Elantra and Kona N!
I love these cars but I am just too big for them. Personally, get the manual and you'll love it
I want one So bad... Hopefully the 2022 model is just as good or better.
If they had this in the UK it would be so tempting to buy one! You guys are very lucky with the price of your cars though, it would be significantly more here than it is for you (I'd guess another $7k ish)
yall getting i30N which looks like a beast with the 2021 model
No, it looks better clean! Good review.
ever wondered about auto transmissions: Do i need to go off the gas pedal for downshift/upshift ? or can i just stay on it without problems ?
You can stay on it
@@Jerrild oh cool thanks
@@1whitedan it’s called automatic for a reason man😂
I'm happy with my Honda Fit 6MT, I have no idea what I'd do with one of these.
Have more fun
The fit is fun!
@@tonychau1983 the fit is actually pretty fun if you get the manual.
Great car and it sets off car alarms in parking garages. What more can you ask for? Except all of California and Vancouver BC hates this thing LOL.
If only it was AWD, then it would truly be the ultimate car.
You want a lighter car
Yes after more research and thinking about it I have changed my opinion and would now agree that fwd is better for this car.
Veloster would probably not be great for a family. The Elantra n on the other hand would be
@@Ausfailia yeah you’re probably right. What I want is a hatch though so I’ll probably end up with either the GTI or the R.
VN 2020 owner asking here... I"ve never been in a DCT. So are you using the paddles to shift? Do you have to? It'd be hard to switch from stick, but you have my attention. Thanks!
It’s an automatic, with the option to sequentially paddle-shift through the gears. Can’t go wrong with it as a daily.
Some guys in Korea did pit Type R against Veloster N DCT in track, with the same tire and all. (though Type R used wider tire due to wheel specs)
th-cam.com/video/eUZHENZfgAo/w-d-xo.html (Spoiler: VN wins)
Both of them are professional drivers, and both cars are mostly stock.
Something to note is here is that Type R driver couldn't turn the ESC and emergency break off, and that did interfere the race a bit.
Thank you for telling me! His Veloster N is amazing. I love the aftermarket wheel with the paddles. And his seat setup. Gotta do this to mine
@angeldeb careful, you’re triggering VTEC
@NA NA He said he didn't took his Type R to this track, but he said he did race GT stock car event in the track.
I still want one of these even though I have a Volkswagen GTI. Do you think this would be a good trade in next year (yes I’m aware Hyundai no longer makes these, but I’m sure I can get a good deal on a slightly used model)
Alright alright I'll get one
My friend has the older veloster, it sounds so good. I just hope the built this transmission properly. Hyundai is known for its glass autos.
When i get this first thing i am going to do is change the wheels
What are your thoughts on this DCT vs. the GTI's DSG? Specifically in the context of being used as a daily driver.
I wanna know too
I bought a 22 dct about a month ago now. I daily it with about a 30 min commute twice a day, 5 days a week. Great ride. I can see where anywhere over a couple hours would be a bit much though. I had a 20 civic si before this. That was a very comfortable car to drive and to be honest, so is the VN.
@@MrTk1842 how bad is your fuel economy? I commute 50 miles combined everyday & I’m curious as to if I should get a gli or the vn
@TheTopher what about fuel economy with this two additional gears in DCT? What is the MPG going 120km/h, how many RPM? Thanks!
We don’t have the Veloster here in Sweden. Hopefully the i30N with DCT will be as good as this one :) seriously considering it instead of an old Porsche hmm
I bought a 2021 F-Type, but if that didn't exist then I would've bought the Vel N DCT and called it a day.
i love this one but i have to go with 4door elantra N...thanks for the vid!
That Elantra is so watered down... it’s just rebadged Elantra Sport ... I had a 2019 and it was nice but in the end it wasn’t all that sporty and very low on power. Meh very forgettable
@@j.martin4476 There was no 2019 Elantra N btw
How does the transmission on the DCT model work when in SPORT or N Mode, as far as shifting throughout the rev range? Is it left entirely to the driver to upshift and downshift at any desired point throughout the rev range (as if driving a true manual transmission), or does the onboard computer interfere with driver input at certain revs if no input is detected from the driver as is the case in many automatics with paddle shifters?
In manual mode it will not upshift on its own, it will just bounce off the rev limiter.
Nice video. Is there any leather in the interior?
I would love to get your thoughts on the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track!
I enjoy the jeopardy interior chimes lol
Damn. I have a 19 manual but this is making me consider the dct....
Dan Ahn why
Does it already come with the LED 6K lights? (Aka white lights)?
Any thoughts on this vs Type R? I'm looking between those two and I do not know which one to pick T_T. Also there is literally no 6 speed manual available in CA, nothing but DCT. Is the DCT seriously better than the 6S manual?
Comes down to price. The N is $34xxx. CTR is $40xxx. I’m choosing the N because I’m frugal. Hopefully in the next week or two. And 0% for 60 months, a no brained.
Hyundai, please make this a true 5-door for the next gen
Called i30 n in europe
I do wish, that one day I can afford this car because it is my dream
DCT seems awesome, but I would still take the manual everyday!
Fun fact: Hyundai/Kia their main goal is to take over European mArket, this car came to take vw spot and the French cars.
If you miss driving a hot hatch... come to Europe, we have tons of hatches
The 6sp, how does it compare to the stock FT86 without Mtec Spring and with (if you had the upgrade).
In your opinion which seats did you like better? These or the ones from the Civic type R?
I would just miss those massive pops you get out of the manual when shifting gears near redline, the dct doesnt seem to replicate them like the manual does because its so fast, other than that, i would honestly consider trading my 19 for a dct one, because of the better daily driveability, because lets face it, driving a manual is kind of annoying when youre not on twisty roads or doing performance driving
In South Korea, new dct owners are changing the exhaust pipes to manual N's pipes for massive original pop corn's sound. And it does mattres.

See if they make a pedal commander for your car it plugs in down by the gas pedal and makes the car a little faster off the line. Are you going to do the JB4 piggyback setup? The N grin is just a gimmick it should of came stock with that much torque have the same engine in my Gencoupe.
This is a press car. They won't be modifying anything.

It's 'welcoming'. My car doesn't have this (not a Hyundai, an older car) but i wish it had something like it haha
@@dannnsss8034 Yes 😁
@@TheTopher thanks man! Love your videos
Could we see a lexus ls460 from 2013-2017? You have covered the used GX compared to the new and seeing an older flag ship sedan would be sweet!
Is there a way to turn off the infotainment screen, or is it always on? Seems like it could be intrusive at night
Why is there no DCT version in the US? I checked the hyundai website and they only have manual.
It's there. I went to "build" on the website and it gives an option for the manual and the automatic.
