    Quasi nostalgic for me board episode Kolton! Grew up surfing late 70's/80's. Boards had some girth until Kelly surfaced with CI. That era your boards hooked into the waves with control and drive achieved with "Lays spud" rails and volume. Keep up the informative content, and "stoked" you continue to share... You're a 'natural.'

    People are riding to small of boarsds these days. I'm glad you made this . Iaugh at dudes thinking they can do a turn at high speed on a 8 foot wave on a 5'4. Potter never had a problem turning a 6'4

      They also don’t need to be as big as they were im the 80s/90s. Average build dude should ride there height give or take. Boards were also rockered to shit in the 90s so the surface actually touching the water was way smaller

    Great video. I see the Mayhem model tested is an SD 3, I had the original Speed Demon back in the day. One of my favorites.

    Dude, never saw this channel. Killer breakdowns. Cool that you shout out to the local kids coming up. Liked and subscribed. Gonna watch some of the older ones now.

    JS is doing a few models that are pretty close to the 90s dims but with modern rocker and thickness.

    90s boards were hard to ride for the average Joe back then, still love those 90s Lost videos when surfing was punk.... What about the position of the fins on your fish?? Great video as usual 🤙🏽

    90's boards have been making a comeback over the last few years.

    Glass in fins? I haven't had a board with glass in's since I was a little kid lol but I loved every board that had them!!

      Yeah I remember back in the day Mick Fanning swearing by glass ons...there is definitely some good things about them....but in general a thing of the past.🪦

      I reckon they're too much of a hassle to still make them (which equals less profits), it just wouldn't make sense with today's surfing industry

    Nice knowledgable and easy to grasp explanations. I still have my 1993 Lost 6'4" thruster that's almost mint. I'm 54 and haven't surfed since then, 94, but was hardcore up till then, then life happened. I think I will try to sell to my local surf shop next summer. I wonder what I can get? I know 10 years ago a surf shop said it was old and offered me crap.

    Stoked on the vid! Would you consider doing a tech tips vid on bottom turns?

    • @used_surf

      Yeah I think we're going to mix it up and go to a more open face for the next episodes. So yeah there's a good chance we're going to cover that in near future

    80s boards thicker and wider, less rocker but less refined than today’s boards. 90s and early 00s boards were thinner/narrower and more drawn out more (More rail line) but more rocker so less rail in the water when turning. I think today’s boards are better but man go back watch footage from back in the day and guys were killing it. AI in momentum on like a 6’0” or 6’1” just ripping.

    I’m getting myself a 90s style board shaped pretty soon. I had one of my dad’s that I broke a few years ago and I thought it was sick. It’s trendy now to hate on HP boards from that era, just like it was trendy back then for 200 pound guys to be riding them. Or trying to, at least. I also don’t think the current HP models are doing the tour guys proper justice. They look too short and stubby. Kelly, especially, has gone too far with it.

    • @used_surf
      @used_surf  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep I agree...more rail...more carve. You watch old vids and that becomes evident.

  • @SterlingSigurdsen
    @SterlingSigurdsen ปีที่แล้ว

    The Lost was too big for you. On that first turn you show, you can see it’s trying to skip out from you as it’s too big for you. That same board about 2” shorter would work really well for you. Sick video though.

    • @used_surf
      @used_surf  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the observation. That wave was kinda weird at the end. I like a longer rail line sometimes ..draws out the turns so it feels like a "carve". Thanks for watching the vid and the comment!🤙🤘🙏
