Sir, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in your case behind the lens. Best coverage hands down on these 2 days. Insane crisp video and angle of attack. I grew up in NB in the 60s and 70s so know the wedge well. Beautiful coverage, thank you.
I’ve been surfing the wedge for almost 40 yrs.It was definitely an amazing day.I wanted to say I met JOB in the line up and he was a nice guy.Jamie did snake me on one wave though..lol I’m Kidding ,I was exhausted and probably shouldn’t have even swung around for it anyway.A few waves later I was paddling out and Jamie took one of the gnarliest take off’s I’ve ever seen there,I bit the bullet to not get in his way ,I hope he appreciated it. Lol. Just wanted to say you caught the epic day well and did it justice .thanks 👍👍
Awesome video! After high school graduation (1971) my girlfriend (now wife) and I rented a duplex on the beach. We were on Seashore drive not far from the Wedge. We would hang out at night at the Wedge just to hear the sound of those massive waves crashing on the beach. Those were the days. 8-)
Got to say you caught it all; doing (& showing) exactly what the Wedge does best! Excellent editing! [I bodysurfed '66 - '69] This was a real joy! Thank you for sharing your art!
Surfed the River Mouth just up the road as big and bigger than this quite a few times in the ‘80s - ‘90s. Black’s could get huge and very unforgiving, and a few other spots. Cheers.
Amazing footage. I love going to the Wedge to watch the surfers. Also, you should probably mention that Newport Beach flooded the night of the 3rd. Reason why the waves looked the way they did. High Tide caused by a full moon and astrological alignment of 3 planets.
Excellent video Brad; superb editing! Size-wise the 4th was arguably the biggest I've seen. I was there pre-boards (even 'belly' boards were rare) '66 - '69. We had some boomers, but "arguably" 7/04/20 holds the size contest for me. Of course now I'm 1,200 miles & a flat screen away (50+ years, too)! Thanks again Brad ~
Body surfed the wedge one day waaay back. My mom had told me not to go there because she knew a doctor at Hoag hospital that told her about people being paralyzed there somewhat frequently. So, I went there of course. On a small wave for the day, maybe 20 minutes in, I got tossed and hit my head on the ground so hard I heard a pop. While being tumbled around I put my hand to my face to see if I could. Scared the hell out of me. I had surfed and body surfed everywhere along southern California by then and never hit my head on the ground let alone so bluntly. I got out and never went back in the water at the wedge again. So I have huge respect for anyone out there any day let alone a massive day, especially surfing it. My God no. You guys are F'ing legends.
@@BradJacobson So I liked this video so much that I shared it! I have a question though, I can't find the name of the songs or bands at 3:25 and 6:30 by plugging in the lyrics which is what I normally do. Can you tell me the name of that/those bands so I can add them to my life's soundtrack?
I always like to see footage of the wedge because I grew up there, but the biggest I’ve ever seen was back around 1976-77 25’-30’ foot waves with tubes so big you could fit a semi-truck in them.
This is addicting. I've literally only body-surfed much smaller waves, and can't do this yet until I figure out how to get the time and experience to get even half this good.
@@waltysalamander well first off they're super durable and wont break like a fiberglass board second they're sponsored by Catch Surf with pro models so they gotta rep the brand and third they're buoyant as shit
Great videography. Interesting comparison to Brent Weldon's very long instant video, which with its more head-on point of view and longer segments provided a good deal of info on how waves were caught (and not), exited (or not), and some ideas about style and technique for bodyboard and surfboard. A bit unusual for him. This one, of course, was spectacular entertainment, making really effective use of the diagonal views and morning sun, from both directions. A situation where local knowledge makes for good catches.
Absolutely agree! Love watching this video you made and edited of those days! (BW made a recent slo-mo, today I believe, that's great. Just sayin'...) Thanks again!
Well into video,is that a MR twin fin? Well ridden, well shot. Also liked the skimboarder! G'day M8,from Down Under. Boogers (boogie boarders) Paradise, wherever this is!
In 1989 the waves were even bigger. There were only two people in the water. Yes I was one of them, the current was pulling me toward the pier, the lifeguard saw this, swam out and took me right under the pier to the other side. I didn't want to admit that I "needed" his help to begin with, but I was so scared that I would be slammed into one of the posts that hold the pier up, so I thanked him. He saved my ass!
I wouldn't go as far as to putting the Wedge in the same conversation with Mavs. Two completely different beasts. I'd take a wave on the head at the Wedge over Mavs everytime, everyday..
But imagine if he didn't put any music at all... there would be all these people again writing comments like "where is the music bro?" and others liking those comments and bitchin' forever. There's a word for it, it's called unappreciation dude... the video is great as is, and in the surf culture there are always music artists that want to promote theirselves with happy videos like that, I too adore the sound of the sea but you cannot have it all, if you want the real thing go out there and dive in or watch the waves at the beach. If you can't... well there are other countless videos out there with natural sound. Just ENJOY... peace and love
best vid of this yet - clearly. And yes I definitely enjoyed the other videos's! Sick drops. Nice opening wave JOB, ridiculous. Fun fact: I believe Tofino had SSW 2ft at 20 which was occasionally 8 ft faces at Cox ! Random summer waves maybe from same swell? No idea actually lol but I enjoyed the weekend and this freak wave vid!

The Wedge breaking with morning glass. Maybe they call it jello now. I never hear glass mentioned. Summer and foggy morning glass. Newport, and a lot of SoCal has a special morning glassy water surface. Surfing is great, but morning glass surfing is amazing. The wedge in summer, cool early morning, foggy and glassy, warm water and a big south swell..
There is a place not too far from there the same size but good for surfing with big square tubes and much better shape and way longer rides. Like Pipeline but miles away from the Wedge at least a mile I think. I could tell you where but it might kill you.
