Hey Kale, 37 year old here, about to be 38, surfed for over 20 years and realized I was still pretty bad at it, so for the first time I found an actual coach to get coaching on shortboarding for an upcoming surf trip, I wish I had done this 20 years ago, we started from the ground up and have focused solely on my paddle technique, reading the wave, and pop ups specifically for shortboarding, and I can definitely say its changed everything.
I can also say that when fellow surfers see what is going on, they actually try and listen in. Getting coaching has made me realize how the vast majority of us surfers are just left to figure it out on our own and we get to where we can and tend to level off. Most of the time coaching is prohibitively expensive or just out and out not available, so thanks for putting out content so that folks who genuinely want to learn have a means of doing it.

Thank you Kale .I am an eternal beginner surfer in the Landes in France .Surf has always be a dream to me . I went alone in Tenerife ,Corsica ,Senegal ..for the surf .
But alone as a woman it is very difficult to progress .If you were near me …
Thank you very much for your smart videos .Dream never stop .
Your smile is as beautiful as the waves .

It’s not that often that people manage to convey useful and empowering information in “tips” videos, but this is actually considered and helpful. Thanks! 🙏🏻

Thanks dude! Ive been skateboarding for 17 years and surfing for almost the same time. I recently have been trying to use my skateboard to cross train for surfing. surfing lake erie can be pretty fickle sometimes especially in the doldrums of summer. just bought a surfskate a few months ago from a thrift store never used and the front truck was mounted backwards! the feel of a surfskate is super loose and really good at doing those tight full turn maneuvers. I have a paved pump tack near my house and I feel its another great way to crosstrain for surfing even though the surf skate feels super weird about going fast compared to a downhill longboard on the pump track. guess im gonna try out some cones in the parking lot now lol thanks again Big ups!

Video is so helpful, especially when the students get immediate feedback. When I competed in skiing, we did a run and went directly into the lodge to watch the tape. Wave pools are a great place to get coached. Surf, record video, review the tape, advise/coach, and then implement the new technique, all within an hour. Undoubtedly, students progress quicker in a pool than the ocean.

I’m a beginner and the wave pool has been the best learning tool. I went from white water to cruiser waves over a few months. I appreciate it doesn’t teach you ocean awareness, so I definitely need to balance it out with a regular ocean sessions.
The Urbn Surf wave pool now offers video footage on each session, so I can download my waves and send to my coach for analysis. It’s been such a useful addition.

    • @amelia_briscoe

Video analysis is super helpful. I was filmed a lot as a rowing athlete and my best improvements in the boat came from getting a visual of what I was doing wrong.

Thanks brocoli!! I was having the best session yesterday in Lombok, same spot today, waves humbled me. Got so many reef cuts 😅. Confidence dropped a bit, gotta keep going. Surfing is very hard to progress but I’m gonna be more mindful of what i do on the waves.

have you got any advice for a beginner who only really gets waves in the winter and lives like 5 hours away from wave pool. i surfed for a couple months before having to stop and i could catch unbroken waves maybe 3/4 times of 12 on a foamy and whitewater maybe 5/6 times of 12.

Help. Beginner again. Surfed 30 yrs ago. Had a surf at Umina today and realised I have a fear of the face. Deliberately didn’t paddle hard for them. Was only 3-4+ mb. Surf line had it at 1-2ft. Had same fear 30yrs ago. Don’t know how to overcome this. Any suggestions from community .

THE ARM...I know how to box, good surfers do a right or left hook (but with palm down and thumb pointing in the direction they intend to go), some look like they start the punch early but that's positioning then the hook...The young guy is doing a haymaker which lacks punch "Power" and throws the body off balance. He most probably, and others see great surfers "positioning the arm" but they don't do a haymaker, eyes deceive...My advice is left and right hooks on a heavy bag, and a double ended bag..Also left and right hook body shots...As sometimes they do a lower body hook after a turn...The bags will give feedback on power and also balance and timing, throw hooks in a surfers stance...Fix all your students "Perception'" on a power hook, how it should feel, how it's done via training on double ended bag and heavy bag, as you use your core and hips as well..It's the same dynamics, confidence in hooking should give them confidence to angle the board up into the right position where you hook....

Life long sponger and trying surfing now. I will say the only thing that helps w surfing from sponging is ocean knowledge. After that, well thats about it. 3 weeks everyday on the 9'0 now on the 7'0 and its much faster as far as paddling and getting up but trying to acclimate.

@@KalesBroccoli could be in Europe Australia USA , i doubt seeing it in my poor ass town jajaja. I also doubt if this wave pool thing is good for surfing as a spiritual activity... Maybe as a sport it will evolve, but the essence of it and the connection and lesson of being immersed in nature is being lost, it's becoming artificial, i guess it goes with the direction our society is taking
