Donald Brink Part 2, Why His Electric Acid Board Snapped, Why Wide Boards Hold You Back and More!
Part 2 of Shapers Talk at Usedsurf
Usedsurf's Shaper's Talk with Donald Brink. Part 2 of 3
Donald brought in 13 boards to Usedsurf to sell and goes through each one. Each board has a story and Donald discusses that story and his approach to shaping each one applying his unique perspective of surfboard design. The total video is 1 hr long so we broke it up into 3 parts.
Part 2 Donald Brink continues his discussion, answering questions, and showing more of his uniques surfboard designs that he brought in to Usedsurf. As well he mentions and shares why he thinks his deck concaves were the reason he thinks the board that he shaped for Dave Rastovich broke and what he is doing now on his boards with the flax glass. He also covers why a wider board can be a crutch and could be holding you back from your best surfing. Talks about how you can find the right size fin for your board and that you could possibly be over fin'd. So enjoy the 2nd part of 3 of Donald Brink Shaper's Talk at Usedsurf

Spent all these intermediate years trying to learn to turn without ever learning to bottom turn lol. No wonder why I’m a kook. Great practical advice here
Aweh bra safrica 100x cooler than California
i wish they made fcs 2 as well, i’m in too deep now to switch
Awesome video review guys! Love the fcs2 js tri pc fins (blue and white ones), do u know which are the futures equivalent? Legacy rake may be? Thanks a lot! Continue rocking with ur reviews!!!
Posers
noseride at 3;20 is tapped
It would be cool to see you demo that 4ft board, looks trippy
Fun with fins ❤
Another interesting video!
Great, its also fin rake, flex in the equation with fin size. Interesting topic.
Good vid. Question about foot placement. Do you do anything special when getting up so your feet land forward on the board? I’m usually moving my feet after I’m up but it looks like you’re landing forward already.
Just hearing Donald talk opens a world of possibilities and how those could look on the wave
@@vincentkr3w 💯💯
One good barrel tip I learned from watching the footage - if there's a good wave and someone else is on it, BURN them and get tubed. A question I have for you, Mr. Sullivan: I keep getting burned on all of the good waves at Salt Creek, so when I'm in the barrel a wall of water comes down on my head and I can't make it out. Any tips??
This is interesting question indeed!
"Não se preocupe com o futuro ", kkkkk
Why leashless?
Would love to hear other more mainstream shapers as well talk about some of the more techncial aspects of shaping. Stuff like where they fade the hard edge out near the front fins, fin placement, rail shape, etc.
@@AEVMU Coolio.... noted. Coming up
ITS ALL ABOUT $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ ! Surfboard manufacturers have people called 'sanders' . They get paid by 'piece rates' . If you lined up 5 boards with plugs and 5 boards with 'glass-ons' , they're going to walk straight pas the 'glass-ons' and do the plug boards . Then you have the surf shops . Do you reckon they would be happy if you took out FCS/Futures fin sets for $130 . They take up no shelf space and are high turnover items . There is way more to say about the physics but anyway you look at it , removeable fins are here to stay .
@@paulcombes3782 yeah, fin systems are here to stay for sure!
Interesting video! Thanks!
Glad you liked it - more parts coming next week - thanks for watching!
Thank you Donnie. Thank you Usedsurf. Looking forward to the next two parts
Should drop Mon or Tues. Glad you enjoyed it.
Appreciate the honest Fin chat!
This was an awesome listen and watch with my morning coffee. I will always love how certain shapers will always have their own little special techniques or special theories on board building. Gotta respect the craft and passion for surfing!
@@tobyneo10101 glad you enjoyed it. Honestly it was so refreshing in some ways to experiences vibe and approach. We enjoyed it too. Thanks for watching next week I'm going to drop part 2
Wow, that fin demo is dope. And the buy and try
Thanks! Yeah use it if you can!
@ most definitely.
i like my yago fins 🤙
Sick... Glad to hear that. I have not tried to set yet but it's on my list. Thanks for sharing... hope you like the video
is a 10" pivot fin too big for a 9' classic longboard? I have a 10" andy bolt pivot and feels like it causes too much drag. Considering getting a shorter pivotfin ...9" or 9.5" pivot to be exact.
Yeah 10 in could be a bit much for a 9-footer. Definitely would be better off with a 9 or 9.5
White fins are my favorite 'fin art'.
The Wade Goodall fins seem relatively 'dead' in surfing performance.
So do you mean dull and lifeless? Perhaps it is because they are all fiberglass right? Those don't flex much. Trying something in a honeycomb construction will give it more flex and make it feel a bit more lively.
I don’t think Captain Fin Co customer service is easy to contact. I had a difficult time finding the phone number and once I found it no one picks up.
@@ninerminer370 oh man that's a bummer I can relay that message to them. Possibly I can get you into contact with someone. Maybe jump on our website and shoot us a message with the info and let's see if we can get someone to help you.
The mayhems are better on boards with a lot of exit rocker and narrower tails apparently
Yeah supposedly. Have to mess around with them some more. I think if you're riding close tolerance to weight board then you're using your rail and your tail more for control. I did try it on a wider tail board with a little bit more volume and the narrow tip seem to lack some drive at the end of cutbacks. So I would have to agree with the higher tail rocker narrower tail theory.
@ sounds right, most mayhem models have lots of tail rocker and they recommend these fins for the stub driver 3.0 and driver 3.0 which apparently have lots of tail rocker
I wonder how these and the 3/2 would be as a twin +1
They just came out with the reverse 3-2 on a twin plus one. Check it out they look pretty sick. Haven't tried them yet but we are on it soon
How do these compare to the John John Scimatar fins?
@@mjstatic77 the JJF scimitars have a little shorter base and not quite as raked back....more pivot. Check our channel, we just did a review of them.
@ thanks….yea I think I saw it, I’ll check again. Obviously the JJF are vapour core as well yea so different flex and lighter right
"sub par" T_T meanwhile florida be like zzzzz
super sick surfing and sick video tho, hope you guys keep coming out with more stuff !!
Is there a texture on that graphic on the leading edge? I have the Robinsons and they have almost a gritty feel on the graphic kinda cool futures is trying lots of neat things
You guys have some super sick second hand boards. Pity that you're so far from South Africa 😂
Thanks...yeah that is a bummer 😞
Sick I need to sign up for this 30 day
No need to sign up just go to our website purchase a set of fins and ride them. If you don't like them just return them within 30 days for a full refund. But of course if you're in the area where you can come to our shop then the Fin demo program is the way to go.
please more content like this
Glad you're enjoying it. Yeah more to come.
Love the prospect of your fin programs and would be right in the mix if you guys were in Europe😅
Yeah that would be sick. well maybe one day someone will do it close to you. Or maybe we'll come to Europe and start a shop up.
@ maybe I will do it myself😁
One of the best videos I’ve seen. Gonna try reaching out further in front with my back hand. Giving advice on where to look and when is super helpful. When I’m popping up, should I be looking down the line or where I want to start the bottom turn? At what point in the bottom turn am I looking for the vertical section?
Any one know about removing the tail pad from a tufflite surfboard.not sure if it would peel the paint off
I would be careful I definitely don't use anything like acetone and heating up the board I think would work you just have to be very mindful as to not heat the board up too much. It shouldn't peel up the paint
Do these fins have a concave on the inside like blackstix?
Can you play like Hendrix with a signature Stratocaster?
Futures is the future FCS are falling behind at a rate of knots!
Yeah I agree. I was thinking the other day that FCS Maine team riders are excellent legendary pro surfers like make fanning, Julian Wilson, kolohe andino, etc.... maybe Filipe Toledo is current but the other guys I listed above are not even on the pro tour anymore. I feel like they need to breathe some fresh air into their brand. Don't get me wrong they are a really good company but, to your point they seem to be kind of falling behind.
Yea they need to do something. What futures is doing is elevating and evolving surfing. If Fcs was competitive it’d be awesome for surfers.
No you can't surf like jjf with any fins
… or without fins!
Yes ultimately this is true!
Love all your fin reviews, thanks so much!
Thanks for watching glad they help you out...more to come!
Do we know if they are going to accommodate the lighter dude and give us a medium?
I just talked to the guys at futures and he said they're going to be out in 2 weeks size medium
@ no way that’s insane thanks for that yeeeeew
Can yall do a review of the new christenson future quads?
Thanks for this review! How do they compare to the regular Vector 3/2?
The regular 32 has a longer Bass and rakes back a little bit more. So it has more drive than the John John scimitar. But, the John John scimitar turns tighter but still have some drive.
Looks like the FCS H4 fins
Good eye... I was thinking the center fin looks similar and yeah the H4 is a little bit more exaggerated but yeah ..good eye
I'm not sure if you guys have done a video or not but can you fill me in on the fins for the bobby quad? Kind regards Justin
Definitely looked like they held too much! Didn’t look like they built speed as much as the Vector 3/2s either. Thanks for the explanation that they’re not the same!
Thanks for watching! Yeah I think if you want hold speed and drive the 3-2 would be a better bet. But to get some drive and get tight turns the jjf scimitar is a unique and sick fin!
Sick! Been waiting on this review. I was also curious about the comparison between these and the Vector 3/2 large. Would these maybe hold better in a bit bigger surf?
The regular 3-2 has a longer base and is a little bit more raked back so that would have more drive and hold
