I have followed F1 for the past 53 years, and can count, pretty much on the fingers of one hand the great drivers from the period since I was old enough to watch races, whom I did not see race in front of my eyes: Clark, Brabham, Rindt, Gurney, and perhaps McLaren. I had the privilege of standing one meter from Senna's Toleman when he engaged first gear and left the pits for his first lap around a circuit in Brazil with a F1 car. Back then it didn't mean a whole lot, but in retrospect, it was a bit of a historical moment. It was for a tyre testing in January 1984 at the now defunct Jacarépaguá circuit in Rio. Coincidentally, Emerson Fittipaldi was also testing that day, in a weird car with a Mickey Mouse livery (literally), and I believe it was the last time he drove a F1 in Brazil

Are u saying that past drivers we're more capable than modern day drivers like Hamilton? ...I agree that it was pure driving back in the day but on the other hand I think the modern day driver is a more sophisticated intelligent harder working driver. Senna was amazing and inspired generations.... But senna cars compared to modern era are night and day ....Modern day drivers have evolved along with the cars . LEWIS HAMILTON is the greatest F1 DRIVER to ever grace a race track ...he has came old school to modern and still won 7 titles ....Hamilton will never ever get the recognition he deserves until he's 20 years away from the sport

Ron Dennis offered a contract to Senna in ‘82 if I’m not wrong, according to a Brazilian biography, but Senna refused to sign it because he would assume a role as a test driver. Ron became very upset back then saying that any driver in the world would sell his mother to get such that chance, but Ayrton wanted to be a full-time F1 driver.

He could have been championship contender in ‘85 and ‘86, if it weren’t for Lotus unreliable cars that he drove + some silly mistakes. However Senna said he needed to grow up as a driver to learn how to be a serious contender, and according to myself, also how to play his cards politically speaking A.K.A. how he stayed at Lotus for ‘87 being able to move to Ferrari, because of Honda engines, and a chance to use them as a bridge to jump into McLaren in ‘88.
