    Wyll is the embodiment of "the path to hell is build of good intentions" he wanted to do good, but some times he gets way too short-sided and ends up making some selfish actions that can cost the well being of others, he's a little immature, gives me the vibes of younger sibling who wants to prove himself, it makes me immediately put him on the "not much of romance material, but good friend" category.

    Wyll is so underrated it's criminal. It definitely has a lot to do with fandom being more into toxicity rather than actually healthy relationships. But I also think colorism in fandom has a LOT to do with it. It just does not sit right with me as a poc that the only black character in the main party gets actively ignored by the fanbase 😬

    • @aquaabouttogetfunky
      @aquaabouttogetfunky ปีที่แล้ว +24

      That or there are a lot of other characters people like more. Especially since the fan base is *adults* who can ENGAGE in toxicity without indoursing it. Tho it is sad because as I started to play, I really started to like Wyll a lot. He’s a sweetheart and had a very interesting character.

      I think had they leaned in more with Wyll being a bit edgier - a good man willing to do whatever it takes for the greater good may have worked in his favor. He really should've gotten the goth aesthetic instead of Shadowheart. Maybe him being more of a trickster than a goody-two shoes because he IS a warlock would've probably been better. His original art also just kind of fit that a bit more too. Maybe make his relationship with Mizora more complex, I mean he has a freakin deal with a devil but that often gets overlooked because of Karlach's story and her having such a unique concept.
      I think also what helps characters like Shadowheart and Astarion in particular is having an evil and good route. Wyll definitely should've had this too given his pact with Mizora -instead of just being enslaved to her.Maybe Larian shouldn't have tried to have so many companion stories so close in concept to one another. Wyll being a goody-two-shoes nobleman just wasn't as interesting of a sell even though he good qualities he is never given a moment to shine.
      I think his issue is just not having enough flaws and not having enough to do. Also he probably should've been more vengeful towards Gortash too.

    I love Wyll as a character, (I’m still in part two in moonrise towers btw so I haven’t completed all of his storyline) I just feel like he is such a rich and full character with a very soft vulnerable side. In this run I paired him up with my oathbreaker paladin/sorceress half orc woman and I just think they have the cutest romance story. There is a lot of fluff in his characters romance in BG3 but I love it as sometimes the other characters can seem like they can come on really strong at times (no shame in that but sometimes it can be overwhelming in an already greatly detailed game). He just has some great charm to him when it comes to his soft and awkward side, but he is true to himself unapologetically, and I can admire his morales/kindness.

    If you want Wyll to die less, you can give him the defensive duelist feat, a shield, and padded armor. Also save a Warlock Spell slot for Armor of Agathis to bump his HP up to Karlach levels. That said Warlock are considered Eldritch blast the class for a reason. Alternatively, just reclass him so you can dip his prefs for heavy armor and martial weapons.

  • @francenkovcan5211

    multiclassing into paladin only means you are taking up an oath and deriving power from it
    if you want to break off your contract, you either need to be argue to have fulfilled your end of the deal, or deal with the consequences of pissing of your patron, because while they can't take away your powers, bold of you to assume they can't send somebody to squash you, or do it themselves

      Yep! I honestly highly suggest to anyone who would lije to see an example of this is to look at Fjord from Critical Roll. You get a good idea of what the consequences can be for trying to break your contract with an evil patron

    Honestly, Wyll deserves more love. Although I'm still in the middle of my first playthrough (got to the end of Act II, near the beginning of Act III proper) and chose to romance Astarion (more so since I just fell in love with how snarky he is and think me bouncing off of him could be a fun dynamic, not necessarily for the thirst factor) first, Wyll is the character I would instantly befriend irl and would gladly go to the bar with. Heck, as an SSW in training (last year of it!), he'd be my dream boss/co-worker. I can't really picture myself with Wyll romantically as he gives off big/little brother vibes more so than someone I'd want to date, but he's so lovable that the lack of appreciation for him is a legit crime.

  • @Fallencity01

    The answer is yes, please do them all. I am weak for every companion and I’m not ashamed to admit it.
    Also I haven’t seen him dance yet, but we did have a conversation about it and when I prompted him to show me a dance, he denied as he reckons he’ll be pretty bad at it since it’s been a moment- so I think you were supposed to register his dancing as bad 😂

      I'm also one who enjoys but is really bad at dancing. Wyll and I would get along splendidly. Do I think I'd be okay romancing him irl? Probably not. He seems a bit too forward for my tastes (so do all the characters tbh). But he's definitely someone I'd be able to have a lot of fun with as a friend.

    I feel bad for Wyll. A lot of people love sassy or edgy characters to the point where his chivalry and romanticism sometines comes off as self-righteous or disengenuous.

  • @solareclipse2130

    Technically speaking, Paladins just need to make an oath (aligned with the subclass you’re going down), and that’s technically it. Most people use gods for simplicity to explain their power. Older editions actually do have the oath to a god situation. That part I am not too sure on.
    What would be funny is if Wyll was to multiclass into Paladin and swear an oath to a god, it probably would be an interesting to see an angel/devil on the shoulders dynamic, or the back and forth between parents dynamic. I’ve played both Paladin and Warlock, both have their perks.
    What would be good if you ever modded BG3 was to grab a mod for warlock subclasses and grab Hexblade (one of the class features is both terrifying and useful).

    I saw a compilation of your character getting caught trying to romance Mizora by your companions and Wyll’s reaction broke my heart. How could ANYONE hurt him like that? 😭

  • @jessicafoster1196
    @jessicafoster1196 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Honestly, I got a mod that gets rid of the party limit, so I could experience everyone's story. Wyll is an interesting character for sure, but if you're looking to bring a caster with you, Gale is better suited to that role. That's why I think most players who don't use mods or play the console version don't use him.

    Depends on the DM. But you can absolutely multiclass as a paladin. Depends on what you're doing, but at worst the two would clash and be hard to balance. My fiance literally played a warlock with an evil patron and multiclass a paladin to follow a good god because he wanted to say suck it to his patron. Lol.

    The flavor text for Oath of Devotion in bg3 literally says "Following the ideal of the knight in shining armour, you act with honour and virtue to protect the weak and pursue the greater good", which is so painfully Wyll, I'm not convinced they didn't intend for him to be a Devotion Paladin at the very beginning lol. But no, having a fiendish warlock patron wouldn't immediately disqualify him from any paladin powers, even less so since he specifically uses the powers he's borrowing from Mizora to help the Sword Coast. He's still upholding his Oath, he's just doing it in a less squeaky-clean manner.
    But anyway, I adore Wyll so much. He's got that "Player's First DnD Character" earnestness to him, and it's honestly so charming. A lot of monster hunters in media are gruff and rugged and anti-social, rawr-rawr-rawr, so having one that was the complete opposite was a breath of fresh air. He also gives Karlach an actual friend if you convince her to go back to Avernus, which is a win in my book.

    Honestly, I preferred Wyll EA story over the one we got at launch. I quite frankly don't like the massive changes they made to his backstory, where apparently he no longer has a hatred for goblins, his grudge against Spike for taking his eye, and even his connection to the Flaming Fist and Gauntlet Yeva . All of these things made him feel more grounded as a character and added depth to his backstory, but what we got instead felt....kinda weak if I have to be honest.
    I also don't like the change to why he made his pact in the first place. In the EA version, he made it out of vengeance after nearly being killed by a goblin, losing his eye and failing to protect the innocent. In the launch version, he made it to protect the city from the cult of Tiamat....which is okay, I guess. But this kinda circles back to me about my point about him feeling more grounded as a character, I much prefer the EA version where he made the decision out of vengeance for the innocent rather than selflessness to protect the innocent. It feels more realistic.
    I also think they could have done more with Mizora and Wyll's pact outside of just the stereotypical b*tchy patron that won't stop bringing up the terms of the contract, maybe have it be romantic to flesh out the relationship and show how Mizora controls Wyll through more than just the pact.
    Ultimately, Wyll's character suffers from the fact that his character was massively rewritten/overhauled late in development( Or so I hear), which is why I think he is sadly still one of the most boring companions in the game and gets the short end of the stick in terms of development. I like the guy, don't get me wrong, but they definitely did him dirty in terms of development.

    Pretty new viewer here. Was here for the MLP videos, am staying for the genuinely good character design. 😅
    And can I just say that the only hate I've seen for Wyll is his romance line? People claim it's boring as hell, but I'll take a dance scene compared to being bitten by a vampire any day lol.
    He's genuinely sweet and means well.
    So imagine how conflicted I was when I found myself in a love triangle with him and Gale XD.
    Love the character redesigns! Definitely keep them up, if you so please!

    Warlock patrons are not always devils (it can be celestial entities, archfeys, fathomless, genies, etc.) so a paladin's oath wouldn't necessarily interfere with their contract. The powers offered with your oath are also vastly different than what a warlock contract can offer you. And since paladin and warlock are both charisma based class, it's a rather popular multi-class combo ^^

  • @Micolino9878
    @Micolino9878 ปีที่แล้ว

    10:23 In Tabletop D&D it's rare to change class AT ALL, though there are technically rules for it now. Warlock/Paladin is a pretty popular build, but it's not enough to void a Patron's contract. Gods and Patrons don't seem to mind when someone double-dips, which makes sense since many devils used to be angels (and in some settings devil magic is STILL considered divine), and Paladins don't have to have ties to the gods at all. Even if a Warlock asked a god to void their contract, the DM probably wouldn't make it that easy.

  • @frostrider3704
    @frostrider3704 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The problem with Wyll is that he is so cocky and abrasive when you first meet him.
    He acts so righteous and high-handed, naming himself "the Blade of the Frontier", being so very against the 'evil' races and giving you a stern chat about not taking Raphael's deal.
    He also comes in after your party is full, so you don't immediately have him on hand. You have to deliberately send someone away to take him on, so you don't get to know him instantly, as you do with Gale or Astarion.
    He does come across as a Paladin, so when you do decide to bring him into the group it's a surprise to realise that he's a Warlock - with a demon patron, no less - and it comes across as massively hypocritical. And, like you say, you're expecting a tank to help you out and instead you get a Warlock who isn't as good with spells as Gale and isn't someone with extra use in game, like Astarion. He's in the middle for everything and when you only get 3 people to take with you, well you want solid competancy.
    His story is also so vanilla. With Gale you get an accidental nuke walking around eating your magical weapons and Astarion's revenge narrative is instantly engaging. Whereas in Act One, all you get from Wyll is that he's a Warlock. You don't even find out about his father until Act Two and by then most people will have latched onto another character to romance or learn their back story.
    So I'm not really surprised to hear that he's the least romanced character in the game.

    I made Wyill a padlock [paladin warlock multiclass.] During my first complete playthrough of Bg3. My character was a half orc fighter named Gilda [Appearance wise. She ended up looking like Griffith from Berserk.]
    SPOILERS.
    She ended up in a romance with Wyil and he ended up letting her down gently after we failed to save his father due to me fcking something up.
    I really enjoyed Wyil's character arc. I originally was going to have Wyil as an oathbreaker paladin. But he kept his oath and weirdly. Vengeance fits more after all the shit Mizora put him through. In the end. Gilda, Karlach and Wyil ended up going to Averuos together. Ready to beat the shit outta Zaraiel.
