It will always hurt to those who grew up with him. Maybe to other future generations, he will just be another Batman voice actor but to us who grew up with him from the DCAU to the Arkham games, he was OUR Batman.
Batman Gotham Knight is so underrated! each episode is character study on the different aspects of Batman's character my favorites are a cross between crossfire and darkness dwells because of how moody and dark they both feel!
So glad I found this movie a while back. It's damn good. My favorites are probably the episodes where he fight croc in the sewers and the one where he's shot by a perp in the sewer and finds that firearm stavhe at the end. When Alfred tells him to give him his hand to pull him up and Bruce with his hands occupied with the weapons simply says "I can't.", idk why but that scene lowk gets me.
@@Swagonslayuh it's really a metaphor on how Alfred can pull Bruce out of his darkness but he chooses not to grab Alfred's hand he's basically saying while holding the pile of guns "This is my world" "My mission" "My purpose"
I very much love this film. Loved the different anime styles, the different stories being told, how they all connected. Honestly, I prefer seeing this as a standalone thing than a bridge to connect Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. And yeah, that last one in particular was beautiful. To me, it was like watching Hellsing Ultimate, but featuring Batman.
I just wanna mention how Crossfire seems to take place in the arkham verse, as a guard mentions that the entire city block has become a prison and you can see Wonder Tower.
Nah. It doesn't. Good catch, but that's definitely not intentional. Arkham Asylum didn't even release until 2009, with Arkham City releasing in 2011. Gotham Knight (all six shorts, Crossfire included) released in 2008. Cool connection, but not intentional. From what I remember, Batman: Gotham Knight was "supposed" to take place within the Dark Knight trilogy.
The city block was the Barrows, the place totally affected by Scarecrow’s toxins, from Batman Begins. It has nothing to do with Arkham. Nice try though.
Really love your recent output. Your videos are incredibly therapeutic in the way they discuss superheroism, and has brought back so much love of the DC Universe. Thanks for it
I bought this collection recently, adding to my animated and beyond blurays. The stories people get to tell are often limited, but the beauty of how they bend those walls or recontextualize them is what makes enjoying everything so fun.
This is a great Batman animated film that hardly gets mentioned , it shows Batman in all his wonderful forms(Gadgets , enigma , young Bruce Wayne) , In Darkness Dwells is a great story.
"A human being with weaknesses forgotten in a myth that he's become." This is one of the most powerful lines you've ever spoken in your videos Leo. This line shockingly applies to so many people and their views on others. How many children view their parents in such a way? How many people view others in this way? It is crazy how much people get so misunderstood because of a mythologized version of them is what people see.
I will say that "working through pain" is my favorite arc in the movie. I also understand why people want a show where it shows bruce training those 7/8 years while abroad.
I really loved this video. What's funny is I watched these short stories years ago when I was a kid, (prolly 9 or 10 years of age), and the ones with Batman struggling and hurting scared me. Like as a little kid, I was looking for security and I did that through herioc/selfless stories. I think I was definitely too young at the time to watch these or understand all of them fully lol. But honestly now this kinda fixed a lil part in me from all those years ago, like "omg I understand these stories now!" Pain was a huge part of my childhood, so watching this 11 years later, Damn. Even though its just stories, the concept of Bruce, trying to use his pain to face the fear, face the bullets, that concept, is what I did without even really knowing it. So idk watching this, was kinda comforting. Like a character I looked up to so much as a kid, his ideals, who He was, who he wanted to be as a person, he didn't know how to do all that either. But he didn't give up, he kept looking for a way through the pain. And Thats exactly the person I've worked to always be, even when things got bad. So now it just made me appreciate these stories even more. Not for the badass batman, but for who he was at his core in these. I never knew/thought about the meaning of those stories as a kid and I didn't really have anyone to explain it to me then. But yeah I'm glad years later I got to revisit these stories now when I really understand them. 10/10 video! Loved it! (Also one short story I did remember and loved, was the one when Batman walked through the fire, to save that person. Like its true some stories, especially like that one, for me as a kid, it just made me feel safe and like nothing in the world could hurt me)
You're intros are very well crafted, well done on another video. Batman uses his pain and is influenced heavily by his trauma, that causes him to behave extremely paranoid and not human, that even criminals and citizens have theories about who he is, and that's basically what we see in the shorts, people's perception of the caped crusader.
Idk if these can apply to life but idk… I just don’t know. Something about them keeps me interested and calm at the same time. Thanks IP you’re hella awesome. Stay healthy and blessed ❤️
Personally, I think Working Through Pain should have been the short that ended the entire film. Not that Deadshot is a bad short, but Working Through Pain is definitely the most impactful and most important. Because it shows you why Bruce is Batman, why he endures all of it. That last shot of him holding all those guns, the very thing took away his parents, and looking up at Alfred to only utter: "I...I can't..." That is Cinema.
I've been watching this video on repeat about 4 times now and 5th going, the way you used background music and the timing of them, it turns a mere video essay into art. :D
We really need more of these anime compilations for DC and Marvel. I don't think there's ever been a totally bad one even if they can be inconsistent. There's always at least a couple of all time classics.
Honestly, the Batman scenes in "crossfire" are probably my favorite pieces of Batman media ever. I get that a big part of his appeal comes from his story, how complex he is, how intriguing his mind is and all Batman really does in "Crossfire" is be a badass. Yet there's something incredibly entertaining about him being a badass, especially considering how he is framed to be in that story. I could watch that short all day long.
I had this on DVD when I was younger and I used to always watch It I just love the hell out of it I remember watching it once every Week I think this is the reason why I respect Batman so much It had such a unique way of just making you feel for his character And to help you understand him so much.
After watching your videos for a while now, these are amazing and how deeply you're able to disect this stuff in a short time is incredibly, props to you!
You are an incredibly insightful narrator. Never overly preachy. Your analysis cuts to the bone. These essays are intriguing and very entertaining. Keep on keeping on!
In my own head canon. Gotham Knight is a prequel that takes place during Batman's first year in the Arkham verse as his pain and struggles quite nicely parallel the Year One comic/movie but considering the cast and characters used it seems to cover all the bases without majorly breaking the established canon. Feels like a perfect pe-origins batman series.
Recently found your channel, so impressed by your perspective and direction. You’re able to verbalize everything I love about these characters! Keep it up!
Just binged several of your videos. There's something so nostalgic about the format of your videos. So warm. Easiest sub I've ever done. Guess I'll give you money now😂
This movie is so beautiful, and the weird thing is that the whole 6 section felt connected plus it was Kevin Conroy's batman, it gave such a nice feel to it, I don't think it would've been the same if some other actor voiced batman. I loved and enjoyed every single part of it and as a stand-alone or 'nolan-verse' movie this stands at number 1. I don't care what people think but man, to see how people could animate or tell batman's story in such different way was so joyous to watch. I wish they do this more often but the only thing it will miss is Kevin Conroy.
The audio files on Gotham Knights are top notch 👌🏽 It’s everything I wanted in a Batman movie. Personally, I’d like either a game prequel or a sequel with more audio files from Bruce.
I remember I had the novelisation of this movie as a kid but had no idea it was a movie until later. Just thought it was a cool hard boiled batman book.
