I love how Burton/Keaton gave Batman such a gothic treatment with the acting, lighting, costume, cinematography and music. Batman is literally like a supernatural entity. Vampiric or even. It feels like a quasi horror film. Gangsters completely in fear of a “Giant BAT!”. I love the whole vibe it gives off. You didn’t get that from the other Batman portrayals.

There was actually a comment in the script that said that scene was very similar to when Batman's parents get murdered. It's clearly done to draw those parallels and it explains why Batman wants to single out these two muggers in particular out of everybody else in Gotham.
Fun Fact: The line was originally meant to be "I am the Night/Knight.", but Keaton kept flubbing it. He ultimately adlibbed "I'm Batman." and history was made.
As great as the Nolan movies were/are, this introduction to Batman was absolutely stellar. I remember being sat in the theatre watching this and it just blew me away.
Kids today have no idea just how big of a movie this was when it first came out. The hype behind it was comparable to Avengers Endgame. Even to this day Batman 1989 is One of the best Batman films ever created.

Michael Keaton, the very best Batman. Never noticed before, they added the close up of Keaton from the Axis Chemical scene where he is holding Jack Napier's hand, in 3:51. Fits pretty well in here. The key thing is, not to light things, background etc. too much and they did that so well in Batman (1989)

I loved how this movie, in the first five minutes, established itself as a completely different take from the Adam West Batman of the 60’s. Many didn’t like the idea of Keaton as Batman, but I bet the opening scenes changed their mind.
