@@nicoeleich nolly sure love compression. But yeah as much as i love piv album, it's too compressed you can hear that in the cymbals. Love p3 the most for production
It's why even his "easy" songs are still hard af to learn. And so far I learned harder songs (22 faces, flatline) easier than his easier songs (atropos)
It's like he sneaks every single hit into a natural spot based on the motion he's already in the middle of and where he's coming from/going to. It's like he guides the sticks as they jump off the drum heads or cymbals to the next one. It's REALLY fluid. I've always found his style interesting.
It's because he always plays live to a click. That's why he has the best timing in the business. 10 years of playing to a click 99% of the time will do that to you
What most rock/metal lovers don’t understand is “swing”. Swing as in jazz. Matt totally has it and I think that’s one of the things that make him great. Amazing drummer.
This guy is so beyond virtually everyone else playing drums in rock music. There are only 5 quick stroke rolls in the entire 5 and half minute song, everything else is groove with different dynamics and syncopation. Everybody else kills us with overplaying, drummers have turned into shred guitar players. It is truly an unbelievable and expressive style. Watching him is more amazing than just listening to the recordings, so fluid and graceful. If someone knows of a video where he speaks on composing please let me know. His approach is very Stewart Copeland meets Mark Zonder.
I’m absolutely in love with Matt’s style. I could hear him playing in a room without seeing him and know that it’s him based solely on his unique style.
I’m so stoked that Matt is with Pearl now! It seems like everyone I follow is either DW or Tama, but MY first kit was an Export series, so I’m glad to see a big name rocking a (much nicer) Pearl kit 🤘🏻
My first kit was an export series too, loved it but it was a very old and previously used kit so it didn’t sound as good as it could have but I was less than 10 years old so I was just happy to have a real kit to play on.
@@lincthomas7178 I’ve owned every name brand kit out there. Pearl doesn’t suck. My mlx kit was put through hell and was consistent every show. Ive also owned export. And Mapex and tama and ludwig, and dw and sonor, .if you don’t know how to tune a kit they all “suck” as you put it.
Anyone else catch how he was able to move from straight ahead crashing on the ride back to his usual technique while keeping the groove during the last chorus? That made my day.
I can talk a lot about Matt groove, dynamics and soul, but I'd rather describe his drumwork as very much "alive", human and having lots of sauce. Matt truly is the sauceboss of drumming. Ofcourse the insanely awesome mix from Mr. Nolly is there to put the feather on the crown of this drumwork. It's such a blessing to hear and see Matt play. He's also giving me more confidence for being another open-mouth drummer who sometimes looks like a posessed idiot while playing fills, breaks and other special parts :) All I can say, don't judge a book by it's cover haha. Thanks Matt!
Love so much of what this guy does but got to say it is especially epic when he throws a kick drum in under a backbeat unexpectedly. Sounds like artillery going off.
I enjoy watching Matt play PIII songs more now that I know the songs in thia album required him to adapt to footwork he wasn't previously used to doing according to the album's documentary.
LOVE Matts playing! Maybe next time: mix it in viewers perspective (hihat on the right side). Normally I'm all for drummers perspective (HH on de left side), but for these type of videos, I want to hear what I'm seeing. Cheers!!:)
This is yet another incredible performance by Matt! If you could put which gear he's using (cymbals and drums) in the description I'd highly appreciate cuz that stack sounds fat as hell! Thanks Sweetwater and best of wishes to Matt!
It's a 22" sandblasted extra dry ride. Yes it's an R&D product, but Meinl has made a few available to the public for purchase over the past 2 years I believe both through sam ash and Memphis drum shop.

what kit is he playing?
Matt is a Baltimore legend- I run a studio here and every musician I know has a Matt Halpern story worth telling- what a monster player!
Nolly is a god amongst audio engineers, you can’t convince me otherwise
hmmmm, have u heard of sneap? hes a GOD!!!
Sneap, Nolly, and Buster Odeholm are the big theee for me
Simon Petrén for me
I´ve always loved his work, but lately i hear way too much reverb on the snare and too much compression... it´s getting a little annoying to me...
@@nicoeleich nolly sure love compression.

What an amazing way to play, fluid, powerful, pauses, ghost notes, wow!
What a beast Matt Halpern is.
Hi s part in "Lune" is one of the greatest drum parts ever. The pause is so powerful.
It's why even his "easy" songs are still hard af to learn. And so far I learned harder songs (22 faces, flatline) easier than his easier songs (atropos)
Matt is the grooviest drummer in the genre and his mix of swagger, power, finesse and feel is awesome. That kit sounds amazing.

Matt‘s playing is so damn clean, it kills like 99.9% of all viruses. This is really incredible stuff! 👏🏼
Misinformation! Lol jk

Matt is amazing. That sweet beat during the normal drum rest was an incredible touch. It's fun to watch him flow 🤘🏻👏🏻

Matt Halpern is a BEAST of a drummer, and this album in particular is my favorite of Periphery's releases!!
It's certainly one of their most diverse and colorful, some really memorable moments
3:45 - 3:59 : Flawless victory
⭐️Top snare ghost notes here!!!💫
His cymbals dance with his groove

Matt's drumming is always amazing, but one of my favorites is his work in "Lune", it will always bring me to happy tears. 💜

Really special drummer. Incredibly accurate, highly technical, but still pulls off an incredible groove even in 7/8
He plays to a click almost all the time. We all should be doing that
Great content right here, Matt Halpern is such a beast!
Man, so SMOOTHLY DONE. It gives me such joy watching him play. I wish had this vibe when playing drums. For me easily one of my top 5 drummers.
That fill at 2:25
OOOOHH
So dizzying but so cohesive at the same time. Matt’s got crazy skill
Very few people look as comfortable doing anything as he does playing the drums. It’s wild.
Matt is a living legend
Anyone else catch how he was able to move from straight ahead crashing on the ride back to his usual technique while keeping the groove during the last chorus? That made my day.
Absolutely, that was awesome.
Matt has some of the best flow and groove there is. Can't wait for P5
Matt out here replying to everyone's questions. Geez, what a lovely man he is...
One of the top drummers out there!
What a song! Wow!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Been a fan and friend of the band, grew up in Maryland. It makes me smile seeing Matt getting the recognition through the years he deserves.
Matt Halpern has changed my drumming and helped me achieve another level of playing!!!
Absolute weapon of a drummer
I could watch him shred those drums all day!! such a baddass

Such tight drumming.... And very good audio. You can hear every ghost note perfectly.

Love this song!! Matt is incredible
Awesome great music song drummer rock 🤘
So freaking awesome! Matt's drumming style is so clean!
So soothing...I use this to drift off to sleep each night.,.

this sounds sooo good: crisp and detailed! and of course Matts playing skills are nutz!
Best Christmas present ever!
I'd love to see a video of how Matt tunes his snare, sounds bloody mint in this video.
This play through had no business slapping this hard!! Well played Matt!!! 😆👍
World class demonstration Matt, as always. You're underestimated in the drum world ! GOD LVL
Damn this sounds even huger than the album! Also I rewatched that intro fill like 5x LOL
Those drums sound huge!!!
I wish all records were mixed like this, LOUD drums 😈🤘
Such a beast and inspiration!
Christ this sounds so good
Drums sound incredible
That snare sounds soooo good!!!👌🏻💯
One of my favorite tunes by these guys.. No comment needed on Matts performance / abilities. Other than... Niiiiiiice.
Огромнейшее спасибо за это замечательное видео на крутецкую песню! Просто обожаю эту песню! Спасибо Мэтт и команда!

4:16 WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUCK
Digging the Liquid Death shirt 🤘
Something’s wrong with you if the chorus doesn’t make you rock your head with Matt.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥!!!!
Yeah he's pretty good.
one of the greats
Sick
Incredible tone damn
Sick matt. You made that look like a regular day at the office.
So friggin good
GOD tier drummer!
Those damn ghost snares 🤤👻
I see December 25th but those ghost notes are making me feel like it’s October 31st.
I occasionally come back to this vid to remind me how I want my drums to sound like. Incredible!

Matt without a hat on? Matt without a deep v t-shirt? What year is this? 11/10 @sweetwater!
Where’s the v-neck?
This always struck me as a very difficult in-between sort of tempo. When he does the double pedal sections it looks painful af.
🔥🔥

If you look up his signature stack you’ll find it. Bit pricey though

Hey Matt, here is brand new kit for you, smash it!
Understanding the Halpern technique:
Imagine each drum or cymbal is a note.
what evans type that he used for the toms and kick?
Damn at 2:26 😌😌
like a poet reciting his poem, Matt kept beating on the drums
Dying to know what's that r&d crash-ride is all about
