When a narcissist snaps, lol. His character is vaccinating on many levels, we are kept guessing as to why he acts like he does. He plays the role of a nice guy superhero by choice, but he knows he isn't one and cares less about people other than they are needed to worship him. So, a part of him needs to be worshipped and he can't get that as a bad guy. I'm not sure if his father is that way, he's an ass and needs no worshipping, lol. I think he's more tactical than you give him credit, he tried to get his son's love just by being his father, when that failed he tried the, look what I have tactic, when that failed, he tried yelling and almost demanded love from his son, when that failed, he did the 180 and said, I was wrong this whole time, from now on, no more rules. Again, these are tactics, if this fails, try that. A true narcissist can't understand why a son wouldn't love him. I doubt any human could have his powers and not be a narcissist. I've seen the Barney Fife factor play out hundreds of times in my life. I've never seen it not. Odd, with all those powers, they need to eat, and they grow old. Whatever gives them superpowers doesn't nourish them, have you ever wondered about that. My guess is, if a human ever had powers like that, the need for food would be no longer. Indeed, to have those powers, would turn you into something not human at all anymore, just in appearance only.

Homelander believes his weaknesses are confining his abilities. Butcher's reflecting the things he hates about himself validates his self hatred. Justifies his desire to cut his humanity out of himself.
Butcher is the only mirror outside of his own head that he can trust to reflect his current status. Butcher is, very much, the person Homelander wants to be. That, along with the fact the Butcher has never pretended to be on team Homelander, never tried to use Homelander for any purpose but to kill Homelander, is why Stan Edgar can't do what Butcher does. In a way, Butcher is the only person Homelander can trust.
So Homelander needs Billy Butcher. Butcher is the only human who can't ever betray him because he doesn't fear Homelander and never pretends he feels anything but contempt.
The show has made it very clear that Homelander doesn't respect anyone who fears him. Everyone fears him.

He's created a classic golden child dynamic with Ryan that narcissists tend to do, where he loves him because he sees him as an extension of himself, but it's a fragile conditional love that requires Ryan to live up to the dreams Homelander has already imagined for him. It often leads to children that become perfectionists and can only see value in themselves based on their use to others.

My take is that Butcher is the only person who has never been afraid of Homelander. He's never once flinched, never once hesitated or held back. Homelander doesn't like Butcher, but...he doesn't see Butcher as PREY. Most people, even the ones he grows close to, eventually tip their hands by revealing fear of him. Once he knows someone's afraid of him, he has only contempt for them and they cease being 'people' to him. Butcher is an enemy, is a thorn in his side, but...he's a person. Homelander respects him, and perhaps feels like Butcher respects him as well.

It's the same reason why most Skyrim players won't kill Alduin until they hit level 200. In Skyrim, you can kill the final boss Alduin as early as level 20, or even less, if you're just blazing through the story. But most players want to fight Alduin at their best because he levels up along with the player, and if he dies, most of the challenge from the vanilla game is lost. So they wait and wait until they're high-level enough before they even dare to face him in battle.

I feel like they both know they can't kill each other or hurt each other in any way that'd matter in the long run. Butcher knows he can't put a scratch on Homelander so it'd be useless to even try. Homelander knows he can end Butcher in an instant, but that'd accomplish nothing, it'd be like crushing an ant, he knows it wouldn't satisfy him or aid him in any way, so he doesn't see the point.

    So many reasons:
1: if he kills butcher Ryan will hate him for it
2: if he kills butcher he will have no moral high ground
3: Most important of all. He doesn’t want to win. He wants to been seen winning. Butcher is the ultimate antagonist too him. If he kills him he won’t have anyone to brag too about his victory. Same thing which taking over vought. Just like Stan Edgar said he will come to soley regret it

These people are Queen Maeve, Starlight, Butcher, Stormfront, Stan Edgar, Victoria Neuman, Ryan & Sister Sage are the only people to tell Homelander the truth to his face and all of them (except Stormfront bc she killed herself) are still alive.

I don't know because on a lvl their both mad dogs.
Butcher has lost everything so could die and not care.
Homelander has everything he could want yet is loosing the most important part his mind.

One more thing to note under the category of "Homelander respects those who aren't afraid of him."
I can't think of a single time when Homelander has killed ANYONE he perceives as unafraid of him. And I can think of at least two cases where he thought someone was unafraid of him where, when he found out otherwise, he killed them.
Stillwell was the first person we saw who had som sort of control over Homelander. But she outright admits "I'm afraid of you" and Homelander promptly lasers her.
Then there's Barbara from the lab. At first, she talks down to Homelander and he sort of seems at a loss. Then when she admits that she (like all the other nurses, doctors, and staff) was afraid of him, that's when he bullies her, but not before.
I think if Homelander ever sensed that Butcher was actually afraid of him, that would be when he'd get killed. I also think that part of what keeps those unafraid characters alive is Homelander's curiosity about why mere powerless humans WOULDN'T fear him.

    • @GeorgiaDow

In Homelander's mind Butcher is probably the closest thing he has to a rival or even an acquaintance (aside from original Noir, maybe?) though he'd never admit that.
I think he probably admires the way Butcher hates what Vought's done to people over the decades in the same way he does. They're very much two sides of the same coin, same sadistic streak, same tendencies when it comes to disregarding social graces/the feelings of others, similar troubles with keeping people around, similar fraught, deeply traumatic relationships with their various father figures (and how to co-parent Ryan perplexing them both because of it), hell, they're even kinda catty in the same way and HL seems to even somewhat appreciate his sense of humour. There's a reason they got the same powers when Billy was on Temp V and why they get frequently contrasted as having the same sort of darkness in them both in the comics and the show. They'd probably get along well if it weren't for the, um. Everything.
Makes me wonder what would happen in an alternate universe where the Boys exist far earlier and they cross paths during the same era of the episode of Diabolical with a young Homelander who actually wants to do good. They'd probably have blown up Vought tower together and left Edgar, Vogelbaum and any other higher ups who had anything to do with HL's childhood as bloody chum by the end of the week lol.

I think it's because Homelander is genuinely intrigued by this regular human that not only isn't afraid of him, but actually challenges him. Even Stan Edgar doesn't actively challenge Homelander, though he shows no fear of him.
Homelander seems to respect strength and courage more than anything else. He constantly belittles those he believes to be physically inferior and cowardly. He outright declared that he was better than everyone else during his birthday celebration event and complained about being surrounded by sycophants and no one having the courage to stand up to him, though he uses fear and intimidation to control people.

I also feel like Homelander feels that he is such a formidable opponent and his hate is so deep towards him, that he respects him enough to wait and have him fight on equal playing field which is why he challenged him to fight to the death. It also is kind of a nod to Butcher’s willingness for how far he’s willing to go to get the ability of being able to GET to equal playing grounds because Homelander would expect this of him(his formidable opponent) that he will be able to do so.

“Well,” Sam began, “it turns out that hand jobs were a common part of male bonding rituals in some cultures. It was more about camaraderie than sex.”
Jake raised an eyebrow. “Really? That’s pretty wild. Imagine explaining that at a family dinner.”

I'm glad you mentioned plot armor, because that's literally the only reason why Homelander doesn't instantly kill the ONLY obstacle to the relationship with his son in season 4. He is a threat - a threat to his own view as a father; and considering Homelander's current state of mind, he would absolutely go after this threat.
It's also a shame that the writers decided to never bring up when Butcher and Homelander worked together because that could have played in well at the beginning of the 4th season concerning the kid.

Homelander begrudgingly respects Butcher. Butcher is also very similar to Soldier Boy. A "man's man" that Homelander wants to acknowledge him. He knows that if they were on the same level, power-wise, he wouldn't stand a chance against Butcher.
I think its interesting that he calls him "William"

  • @shara1979
    @shara1979 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Butcher is almost like a father figure to Homelander, who stands up to him, & he wants Butcher's approval, in a way. And he tried to get that from his actual father- Soldier Boy, who told him he was disappointed 😞.
But he gets little pieces, here & there, (not verbally), of displays of Butcher's approval, for example-
All the times Butcher teams up with him, like when Soldier Boy was a threat to Ryan, & Butcher stopped attacking Homelander, & joined him in attacking Soldier Boy. That was a display of approval from Butcher, & it seemed Homelander for a second, felt proud, & sure in the fact that his reaction of needing to defend Ryan & that he made a good decision, was validated by Butcher. And hes so sure & proud of it, & needing of Butcher's approval, in that moment, that he nods at Butcher, and when he gets the nod back, he has a look of pride & importance. He felt like he finally did something important, not just killing to save ppl he doesn't even know or care about. But like he did something for an important reason, & Butcher is the only one that can do that for Homelander.

Season 2- in order to have a relationship with his son, he promised Becca to keep butcher alive. At the end of the season, he was blackmailed by Maeve with the flight video.
Season 3- Combination of blackmail, wanting a final fight, did technically try to kill him at Herogasm then at end was prevented from killing him by Ryan.
Season 4- Doesn’t want to ruin his relationship with Ryan while also realizing he’s dying anyways.

This is pretty much it to a T. The video tries to pull a bunch of different motivations from across the whole series, but it becomes much clearer when you look at it chronologically like this. I will add, in season 4, Homelander's ego really wants Ryan to freely choose him over Butcher just because Homie feels superior to Butcher (and the rest of the non-supes) in every way.

Two really funny explanations though. One, Homelander either likes Butcher enough to treat him as worthy opponent or... as shown in episode 4, Homelander does not kill the ones that don't fear him. He sees fear as weakness, a trait that needs to be eliminated. Butcher doesn't fear death as the season 1 finale showed, but he also does not fear Homelander.

plot armor..but wisely depicted. in the first season he tried but he didn't know who and where he was.in the second he doesn't recognize him as a great menace. from third season gates are open: he could kill him...but when he tries..there is temporary compound v. in this last season there is only the desire to protect his good relationship with his son:he knows that Ryan loves him and so he knows that his son will not forget that killing. then now he also know he has a thumour so he will find him pathetic

i like all the points made, one of the other things i think is that butcher and the boys are a threat to other supes who homelander sees as weak and expendable, so whenever they kill another supe it feels like they're doing homelander a favour because he really would like to kill a lot of the seven but he can't. but letting butcher live, so he can kill them, he's can do that.
one of the points about butcher being real with homelander is that he says to maeve that she is the only one who tells him what she really feels and he respects that a lot about her so we have some evidence for that theory
i definitely think butcher is the batman to his joker, he could kill him but what would he do without him? he needs him to affirm his own identity basically.

People don't understand the importance of the connection both Butcher and Homelander share is Becca and Ryan. Homelander craves love and approval and he knows that Ryan has a connection with both Becca and Butcher. If he hurts Butcher he may push his son even further away, may possibly hate him for it. Homelander loves his son and wants to be loved back. Homelander may also feel some remorse for what he did to Becca, so maybe another reason why he doesn't kill Butcher.
    (EDITED)
Homelander's disdain for humans if more likely due to the way he was treated when he was raised, which is why he refuses to be classified as "human", and why he says humans are toys for his amusement, even though humans are the ones who created him, created compound V. However, Ryan was born FROM a human and raised by his human mother, so Ryan does not see humans are merely "TOYS", he loves his mother, and has a connection with Butcher from being around him as a child. Which is why I think Homelander keeps trying to emphasize to Ryan that humans are just toys. If Homelander can sever Ryan's connection to Becca and Butcher, he thinks he could kill Butcher without Ryan hating him. IMO.

There are VERY few people in Homelander's life that are completely transparent with him; Stan Edgar, Butcher, Noir, Sister Sage, and Barbara.
Aside from Noir, he shows a surprising amount of restraint when dealing with the rest of them. He loves being worshipped and adored, but clearly has no respect for those people, like The Deep, Firecracker or his number 1 fans that he killed. But he's the one to blame for his own misery, because he gives others good reason to fear him

To me its like what Heath Ledgers Joker said to Batman on why he wouldn’t kill him. Butcher completes Homelander, Homelander likes having someone who can challenge him, even if he doesn’t want to admit it to himself. A mere mortal, who has the capability to defeat him also gives Homelander an adrenaline rush.

He also wants to be up to the challenge. He can kill everyone he wants in a heartbeat, but beating them at their own game is where he wants to be.
That's an ego thing too, he always want to be better than everyone and has that obsession with proving that he is the best.
Again, remember, since he's a boy he scared of disappointing people around him and I think that applies to Butcher too.
