Pneumonia in Sheep and Goats

I have thought about it further and consulted a friend of mine in Veterinarian School at OSU, the condenses is that we lost those lambs from pneumonia. That does seem to be the biggest wintertime health issue in small ruminants. 10 head is not too bad and we are still within the parameters of what I had penciled into the feeding time period.

A guy can have fun in the cold. Its been about -30 wind chills here in eastern sd for a few days.
I'm thinking about taking kids to the sale next week, I see goats brought up to $4.50/lb this week in sioux falls, that seems like a pretty good price to me.

Do your dogs have access to shelter at all?

No, not in most cases, unless the goats do and that's rare.

How do you get them started on the self feeders. I tired that myself and lost 8 head to that frothy bloat. I barely had the feeder open too. It’s quite discouraging.

Yes, it is very hard to get them started. We started them by feeding them by hand in buckets on the ground. I think they don't know how to eat out of the feeders since we did that can't seem to get them totally switched over to the feeders.

What’s the signs of pneumonia and how are you treating it?

Labored breathing, a snotty nose, and lethargic, they will have a temperature, but most times there is no need to take their temperature. Some die before they show symptoms. You can treat with antibiotics, probably need to get a prescription drug from your vet.

@@grandviewlivestock3936 thanks for the info, still new to the sheep. Lots to learn. Just haven’t seen to much about the pneumonia.
