Post Goat and Sheep Management School Update
มุมมอง 55414 วันที่ผ่านมา
I would call the Goat and Sheep Management School a success. Over 40 attended with great questions and interaction. Thank you to everyone who made such an effort to take two days of your busy schedule to make this so successful. The afternoons at Grandview Livestock were spent seeing the fencing and working facilities up close and then actually putting goats and sheep through them and looking a...

Weeds Are In The Eye Of The Beholder
มุมมอง 705หลายเดือนก่อน
I just don't see weeds anymore. The Sheep and Goats will make a profit from these "weeds" instead of me spending time and money trying to get rid of them. By the way, that never works. We put sheep and goats on other people's property to keep the "weeds" to a manageable degree. The best way to make money is to take an expense and make it a profit. You get a double profit. Learn how to do this i...
Custom Grazing Cattle With Small Ruminants

Thanks for a great video. Your fence looks plenty low to me. How much the animals respect the fence will also depend on the voltage of the charger, how good the ground is, how good the wire is etc etc. When I switched from a low-voltage charger intended for horses to a high voltage charger intended to keep out predators, my animals starting respecting the fence a whole lot more.

Cool thanks 😊
I need to let my goats go. Would you be interested?
e mail me at greglchristiansen@gmail.com, tell me about them and where you are located.
Congratulations on the grass school!
Congratulations on a successful school. That was a huge undertaking and I’m pretty sure it would have been easier not to do something like that. As a watchful outsider, it means a lot to see you passing on practical knowledge. Those people obviously had someone to take care of things in their absence. I know you would never want animals there from other farms, but if I could have brought my milkers along, I would have been there.

Couldn’t make it this year, but hope you offer another school next year and I’m able to attend!
Glad it went so good. Prayers for harvest. Thanks 😊
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Glad to hear in went well.
The event was well organized. The Dutch Cafe in Garrett, KS provided excellent food and space. Greg shared from his heart so we might reach our goals. Thank you, Greg. I highly recommend attending his next event.
Thanks, Elizebeth, a good crowd makes it easy to have a great event. Thanks for being a part of it.
How long does it take for a lamb to weigh market weight?
That just depends on what kind of forage they are on and how fast that individual grows. Just like humans, some get fat quicker and easier than others. Ours are born in May and sold weighing 65 to 80 lbs. in Dec., Jan., Feb. March.
I am glad it was a success and I would have really enjoyed being there because I learned so much from you, very pretty seen this morning that you were showing us. Have a great day Greg
Thanks Karen.
Glad it was a success. Wished I could have been there!
Hopefully, back by popular demand. 😃
Good Morning Greg - Do you fatten your goats and sheep on the same feed or do they fatten better on different feeds?
They're all finished together, on the same feedstuffs.
Yes, exactly what Travis said.
Enjoy hearing the updates! If you all haven't listened to the Herd Quitter Podcast with Greg and Travis, it's a must listen!
Haven't listened to the Working cows episode, Thanks for mentioning in the video.
@@davidanderson5880 Thanks for listening, and watching, David.
Thanks 😊. Pray it all goes well.
Thanks!
I know it has been a little bit, but are any of these still available?
@bharding0421 no, but we have another litter just born a few days ago
Hey I follow the channel pretty close and love the information you put out. I am building some working pens for my goats and sheep and was wondering how wide your alley is(red alley under roof you work yours in all the time)?
Sorry, I was gone for a few days. I just measured it, 13 inches at the top and 10 inches at the bottom. Ours is adjustable and we sometimes move it but it stays about there for working sheep and goats with kids and lambs.
How many sheep and goats do you have out there?
Maybe if u could do your school online some how
We don't have that planned this year.
Thats awesome! I want to try some but i thought the bigger seed might not work so well. Ill be interested to see how good it comes up.
You are right, bigger seeds do not work as well. That is why the bulk of the mix is made of smaller seeds.
Would love to come but the distance and time is a problem. I will say I send everyone to your videos for info and HONESTY! No hiding inconvenient truths on this channel.
I'm interested if you do this again. but not moving back to Manhattan for a couple months.
I guess at this point I honestly don't know. I am finding out that it is a lot of work to prepare for and corn harvest is going to come quickly this year. That being said, I will probably feel different after it is over and I see people encouraged and energized to follow their dreams and aspirations.
beautiful!
I was just discussing this with an ag tech school down there, this past Thursday. Super cool teaching farm, north of Manhattan and they NEED students!
Next level over your lil one.😊

Cool! Looks a lil like erthang else expensive?!😊
$15 / acre to fly on 60 lb. seed/acre.

Very interesting. Keep the videos coming
That's what I have is katahdin, I prefer them over any other that I have raised. Always love the moving videos Greg, you have a great day
i have several smart fences that have some terrible friction, i took them apart and cant seem to see nay adjustment, maybe shaving the width of a bushing could help. have you had thi issue?
No, We haven't had that trouble as far as I know. I'll ask Travis just to make sure.
Thanks for these videos. Other plans in Sept this year..maybe next year. Hope grazing school goes fine
makasi berguna bgt
What kind of sheep do you have
Katahdin
Our sheep love all this available forage!
Look like a bunch of happy animals to me😊 another good video Greg
My goats love giant ragweed more than about anything else
Prayers 😊
I don't know how in the world you have time to make videos. They are great keep them coming. Good job!
That's one reason I don't do a good job editing them. But you get the point. Thanks for watching.
Amen
Be careful about grazing drought stressed weeds. Nitates can get to high. I have lost ewes that grazed stressed lambs quarters.
Looks amazing. Wish we had more acreage / leases available. Continuing to look for some. Fencing, timing can be tricky. Thanks for this good video.
Fencing is not that bad. Watch some of the fencing video's.
Greg, love seeing all the diversity of nutrient dense forage! It truly is a beautiful sight once your lens has changed that you see the pasture through. It would be great for those folks who may not have the experience to see the follow up once they’ve been in for your grazing duration. Folks are always amazed when I show them what the sheep will eat. (And I believe you are correct on those goldenrod.) Hope you and Dale have a successful school! If it wasn’t so far I’d stop by.
I noticed you had Sally with you today I don't remember but what happened to Autumn ? And another good video as always have a great day Greg
@karenzepeta512 Autumn still works hard. I just take Sally more as she is still learning. Thanks for being such a loyal follower.
I’d like to broadcast some cover crops (oats, rye, wheat and/or barley) seed on a former 43-acre cornfield in Pennsylvania later this month (August). Other than grazing the weeds for a year or so since the corn was taken off and frost seeding some red clover, no other seeding, amendments or tillage has been done to this field. I’m hoping that over time the natural seed bank will ignite and provide a diverse pasture. We are rotationally grazing cattle, sheep and goats on this pasture; the stock is typically moved daily. Mostly goldenrod and clover dominate the pasture. There is a fair amount of uncovered bare ground. Given our relatively limited budget and the use of a 4-wheeler broadcast spreader, I’m thinking about lightly broadcast seeding oats and rye, with hopes of filling in the bare ground spots, improving the soil and proving some fall and spring grazing forage. 1. Does this approach sound reasonable? 2. What seeding rate of oats and rye might you suggest so as to not choke out what’s already growing? 3. Is there a perennial seed I might want to add to this mix or apply separately or would it be better to broadcast the perennial in the spring? 4. Any other suggestions? Thank you very much.
Glad you're getting some rain
