  • When a jaguar pounces, sometimes one bite is all it takes to get a meal. National Geographic has exclusive video of a jaguar taking down a caiman in Brazil's Pantanal wetlands, photos of which went viral earlier this month. Luke Dollar, a conservation scientist who helps manage National Geographic's Big Cats Initiative, explains the hunt and explosive moment of predation.

I would say this Caiman's less than 100-120lbs. Jaguar males are about 170lbs on average, unless this is an above-average male (reaching 210lbs and above). At 1:35, you can clearly see the the size difference of their bodies. Excluding the tail, which only comprises 20% of a Crocodilian's weight..

The ability to invade in land and water makes it a top predator among the felines race.but the really strenght of it relies on it stealth capability.the accuracy of the movement, the overall body and mind coordination makes the jaguar a top hunter among the rest.

No, it's not a top hunter among felines. Jaguar is almost the size of a Leopard and leopards are hunted regularly by Tigers. Jaguars will be toasted when they meet a crocodile. Jaguar is too small for a crocodile. It's not crocodile but Caiman. Caimans are much smaller than crocodiles. Caimans are mostly 6 feet long and around 100 pounds, whereas crocodiles can be 20-plus feet long and 2000 pounds. Amongst cats, only the Bengal tiger has been known to hunt crocodiles.

Jaguar has the 4th strongest bite force in this animal kingdom., ~1350-2000psi. It is because of the special arrangements of its jaw muscles that is different from the other 'weaker' cats. I like how this video starkly shows the evolutionary advantage of being warm blooded - the cayman were sunning themselves on that sandbar to gain enough energy to be able to move and hunt later on in the day, making them highly vulnerable; the jaguar on the other hand is ready to go anytime, anywhere.

This fact doesn't take anything away from the Jaguar's abilities that are phenomenal, with the strongest bite force of all big cats!

Love your enthusiasm and passion! However once you’ve actively observed almost all of these apex predators in the wild, you’d be amazed at how much you thought you knew and how little you genuinely understood. There is no denying a tigers size and power, absolutely no dispute there, the largest and bulkiest of the panthera genus, they are the embodiment of apex predator. That said, I and many others in the field believe Jaguars could absolutely give both the Lion and Tiger and good run for their money. Jaguars are essentially robust, muscled machines, pound for pound the strongest with an incredible ability to crush skulls rather than the spine or jugular. Incredibly underrated cats. I strongly urge you to book yourself some travel someday and find good genuine sources to learn more from (not blogs or internet articles).

president comacho Yes. That's what exclusive means in the context of nature shows. Now that you mention it, though, I've never actually read that in a dictionary anywhere. I've just been assuming that because all mentions of exclusive footage of animals to memory are when they follow a single animal with a hidden camera.
