Maaaaayn the real hero here is Chris! Ol'boy risked it for the biscuit! Gave it his all to not slip, net the fish, and come out alive! Next time, make sure he wears glasses, I've seen a situation, exactly like yours, but the fish spit the hook out while in a lot of tension hook went straight into the netters upper cheek, below the eye. Glad this one was a success! Congrats!

Wow that's awesome. Never seen a ling/cobia caught from the jetties. I heard that someone caught one from the Galveston fishing pier recently but I can't corroborate that.

It's called a ling in Texas waters. In Louisiana they are called lemon fish.Very good table fare. Jacks are not, they are worthless .
Id rather catch a Jack over a Cobia any day😂

Nice Catch. You have a destiny if you caught a lucky Cobia. Earliest in the year I have ever heard. Surfrunner got a big 57" cobia off the end of that jetty in the spring of 2001. I got a 53" on November 2, 2000 off the Galveston fishing pier. You are in for a big year. Incredible catch. Keep the fishing hard tradition going. BTW there were two tiger sharks caught over there on the rocks on CASTED BAITS. Save those stories for another day.

@@GGAnglers No the fishing is much better now. The Cobia will be there in May both at Surfside and Port Aransas on clear water days. I have seen several caught of Bob Hall Pier in May on slidelines.
Baits...Mine was on four shad on the hook at once casting off the T-Head off the Galveston pier in the right corn at sunset.
Surfrunner caught his off one of those brown eels casted out on a harnell rod off the left side of the surfside jetty.
The Bob hall pier cobias were on live blue runners on slide lines...in May.... landed during the middle of the day.
If targeting a Cobia, the easiest bait to come by would be a hardhead around 7 to 10 inches with the barbs cut off. They love hardheads and hardheads are a hearty live bait.
There was a big cobia caught north of the Port Mansfield jetty in May of 2016 5/7/16. "Search youtube Big Cobia caught off Port Mansfield jetty"
May.....Hardhead.....Clear Water....Port A North would be my bet. Maybe Port A south off the end floating/balloning a hardhead.
Those big ones will bust your balls. Watch what you are doing when you land one, they can go bananas after they are landed. Bring leather gloves to land them with off the rocks.

@@GGAnglers I have caught a really small cobia around 15" at the pier at Seawolf. I've heard of people catching big ones in the channel from time to time. I have caught quite a few offshore around rigs and wrecks. Badass catch they are the best eating fish BTW
Nearly broke the NJ state record last year 87lbs. I've got to tell you I have caught a lot of bigger fish but nothing that bull dogged me around the boat like that fish. Had it just 15 to 20 feet from the boat for an hour an 20 minutes before the gaff shot, insane battle.
