    i'm not 100% certain but I think you need "JEDEC" memory to make it run at 3200mhz without having the XMP option in bios.

    • @NikiDaDude
      @NikiDaDude 2 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      Yes this is the reason, the RAM has to be rated at 3200MHz by SPD/JEDEC specs, otherwise it won't run at 3200 unless the BIOS has an XMP toggle.

      It most likely has to be 3200mhz Cl22. I replaced an 8gb 3200mhz stick with a 2x8gb/3200mhz CL22 kit of G.Skill in a laptop with a Ryzen 5 4600h/GTX 1650 that has no XMP settings in BIOS and it runs at 3200mhz. So glad I didn't ty the CL16 kit!

      Same for the Pavilion desktop I bought with a 5700G. It had a single 16GB stick of JEDEC 3000MHz. It wouldn't let me use dual 3600MHz sticks at anything but the base speed.

      Ram problem is just that Ballistix ram is rated 3200 when overclocking with XMP, which isn't well supported on many laptops. All Ryzen based (4000 & 5000 mobile cpus) laptops I have seen requires JEDEC rated memory to run on advertised speeds. Ballistix sells 2666Mhz JEDEC memory as an 3200Mhz "XMP tested". JEDEC timings and speeds comes from SPD ROM chip on memory itself. At least Kingston have 3200Mhz JEDEC spec memory packages and have 3200Mhz JEDEC timing information on SPD ROM, while Ballistix has only 2666 JEDEC settings on SPD ROM. I have been on that trap too... And cursed this a long and hard.

    If you are in the market for one of these EVGA 1060s Get the EVGA 1060 SC they only boost a little faster, but the heatsink on the GPU is much better, the Fan an the plastic shroud looks the same, but the heatsink isn't a Aluminum block of depression like it is on a normal 1060. 1060SC can stay a lot cooler and keep its Core clocks higher underload.

    • @amnottabs

    • @sasiuru
      @sasiuru 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have cursed Crucial for that as I have had same problem with those SO-DIMMs. Most of the Ryzen laptops seems to require JEDEC 3200Mhz chips to run advertised speeds. Jedec chips are more expensive than XMP 3200 as those XMP chips tend to be slower rated chips with some test to verify them with XMP overclocking.

      It is even mentioned in that Amazon page, speed "2666MT/s, 3200MT/s" which means 2666mhz JEDEC and 3200mhz XMP. Dawid either didn't read so far, or didn't know that laptop doesn't support XMP. It has to be 3200mhz in JEDEC standard to it run at 3200mhz without XMP, of course.

      @@leevi6026 I didn't read that far. 😅 But I assumed that laptop ram would be rated for JEDEC considering they usually have more limited bioses compared to Desktops. You know what they say about assuming though.

Right off the bat knew XMP required to get full benefits. The thing I looked for awhile when I bought my 32GB of ram for AMD laptop lol : o ) Cheers to a New year and what it may bring lol

    I would honestly buy that RAM since I'm struggling with 8GB lol and my CPU only supports 2667MHz max
    Faster RAM probably would of helped in this test as I'm guessing there is shared VRAM in the laptop and some games might be using it

      What CPU do you have? Most "say" they only support a certain speed "officially" but then allow you to use higher speeds with "overclock" settings. I think even 5th-gen Intel should go much higher than that.

    Okay WTF is this coincidence!
    Let me explain: I was just watching some random tech videos on the internet for fun, and I really enjoy some of the silly experiments you make, BUT I got really intrigued with this video and its thumbnail because somehow you made a review of the exact model of the laptop I own (except for regional difference, keyboard being french layout) 2 years ago, I did buy mine shy a fortnight after you released of this video, like what the fuck were the astral planes aligned during August 2021, and you made a significant upgrade of the RAM, WHICH I ALSO DID RECENTLY LMAO, though I did find one kit of 2x8 Go actually running at 3200 MT/s.
    I really appreciate all of the content you make, you go and find your way of making us thinking about the proper way to buy tech things, and you provide a professional benchmark in which that everything you do piques my interest.
    I don't think i will stop binge watch your videos, be as new, or even older....
    :D

    This is reassuring to hear. I recently got back into gaming and I picked up a used OP-LP2 for 400 with the GTX 1060. I had no idea the capabilities for this card and I'm reassured that I have a very capable rig, although the thing gets hot like crazy... Even with a cooling pad and Opolar vacuum cooler attachment!
    I should be good for a long while since I mostly play indie platformers that aren't too graphically demanding. Haven't been interested in AAA games lately.

I run a Ryzen 3600, 16GB 3200Mhz and a GTX 1060 6G overclocked by quite a bit on 144Hz panel with Freesync - it definitely satisfies my gaming needs to the point of where I stopped looking around to buy a GPU. I'll just wait for full MSRP whenever that comes. BF2042 Open Beta this week, let's pray the game with be running smoothly.

    I'd be mildly interested in seeing the performance difference between that 1060 and the SC version which has a substantially better cooler, despite looking the same from the outside. I can say from experience though, you'd probably want to change the thermal paste. I had one and it ran hot as balls and loud as hell when new. A quick thermal paste change dropped the temps and fan speeds significantly. Naturally, it boosted way higher too.

    I have this same laptop but with a 10th Gen intel Core i5 and a GTX 1650 ti. I got that exact same RAM kit sent to me from Crucial (was an RMA) and I too ran into the speed issue. Upon looking it up, "JEDEC" memory is needed to run at the higher speed in a proprietary motherboard like what HP has in their laptops. I cannot run XMP profiles due to the intel Extreme Tuning Utility not recognizing the CPU/motherboard as having the XMP "feature". I am still very happy in my choice to buy this laptop when it was on sale at Target for $599.99

    My Girlfriend actually owns this same laptop but with the i5 variant instead. It runs everything pretty much just as well as you would expect for a laptop but her GPU is the GTX 1660ti model. So the framerates are much better, even with the standard 8GB RAM configuration. My own laptop, the ROG Strix G512LW came with 16GB of DDR4 @ 3200hz, which was a pleasant surprise because, like you said, it's not common to see in laptops. (and the ram is from Samsung, so score lol).

    I was dealing with that RAM issue the other day with my desktop, also using Crucial Ballistix. The solution was updating my AsRock board's BIOS to an OLDER version that didn't have this issue and I was even able to run my RAM above the 'maximum' supported by my board. Board 'maximum': 3466MHz RAM: 3600MHz. But again, this is a desktop, laptops are different when it comes to this stuff.
