In this case (pun intended) it wasn't really Nvidia's fault. Look at that case! It's almost like they added those "cool" ventilation flaps as a joke. That case clearly has terrible airflow. Plus SLI/Crossfire was never great for cooling. The top GPU would always run hotter because it was being choked off by the bottom one.

The 2GB VRAM per card is never utilised as 4GB VRAM in total, it is limited to 2GB VRAM total when running SLi.
If you want to know why VRAM doesn't combine in multi-GPU setups is simply because there's no interface fast enough to allow for data sharing that they could use in a practical manner i.e., without bulky or expensive connections. This is also on top of the fact that now there's another layer of memory that the GPU has to check (if it's not in its VRAM, it has to go to the other card's VRAM), which could induce more latency which is something you don't want in real-time 3D rendering.
And since the "most compatible" multi-GPU rendering mode is alternate-frame rendering, they both need the same assets anyway.

I think the 600-series higher-end cards just ran hot in general. I think this was one thing that Nvidia did "FIX" in subsequent cards or starting with the GTX 1000-series cards when power efficiency became an important factor I guess. But the temps don't surprise me to be honest since that dual GPU has roughly the same type of cooling solution as a single GPU setup so it might be interesting to see how a single GPu 680 behaves in the same system. I'm thinking the cooler solution is just barely adequate to keep the GPus from boiling.

But these days a 12 year old PC is more than fast enough for regular use with an SSD. Even a lot of modern games would run if the GPU was upgraded to something a bit newer like a GTX 1080 (Ti)

But this 12 year old CPU can run AVX instructions unlike that new Snapdragon X Elite that couldn't run apps that need AVX instruction set, like Age of Empires IV .

    • @JeoshuaCollins
      @JeoshuaCollins 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@fleurdewin7958 That's all due to Microsoft doing a bad job by not compiling native and trying to translate. Proton translating Windows libraries to Linux is a different case, since they're both x86 instructions.

@@Pasi123 As long as day-to-day use doesn't start taking advantage of tech that the 12 year old CPU can't handle, yeah. So these ones should be fine for at least a couple of years still.

You do know you can refill the aio cooler right? Just take off the cold plate screws and the cold plate itself. Will need the right screw bit and an great amount of force or you will only strip the screw heads. Keep the radiator as lowest point and shake it while refilling. Before installing it again, keep the radiator up and the pump head lowest and shake the pump head. There should be no sound comming from the aio if done right. In case of air at the pump, the pump will die as a waterpump is cooled and lubricated by water.

Hey there, GPU Collector here: I had the same issue with the GTX 690, the Temps won't go down much when you repaste and clean them, the fanspeed will just be a bit lower. It makes it quieter, but it seems to be comfortable sitting at 85-90c. Also yeah, since it's a 600 series GPU a lot of stuff doesn't run in it anymore. Give Borderlands the Pre-Sequel a shot, that has really really good SLI Usage as well, and runs awesome.

If it looks OK I'm planning to install some new liquid and shelf it for future use. That thicc 120 fan is INSANE btw, please keep it to use on future experiments!

Dawid, your suggestions for an SSD is no joke.
I recently helped a friend with his Gen6 Intel build and it has a 1TB Windows harddrive install that failed and kept BSODing, and when I reinstalled the OS it took literally 3 hours of it being stuck on the getting ready page. I ripped off my unused 120GB SATA3 SSD for him and the install plus driver process took about 25mins. I just gave it to him afterwards.
SSDs are literally mandatory man, at least for Windows.

@Dawid- I'd like to propose a suggestion: rather than installing fresh Windows, you could hold _Shift_ while restarting the computer.
That brings up the option to wipe user-data and restore from the recovery Windows image, which you'll get the Alienware bundled bloatware, sure, but you'd get a better understanding of how it was set up from the factory (OOBE) without hunting for drivers and software packages that may or may not be available for download from the vendor any longer.
You could then clone the image to the SSD with an external USB to SATA adapter. Or set it up with split partitions to compare bloatware vs. non-bloatware performance.

I remember wanting this pc so bad... It was the bees knees of prebuilt at the time. I think before dell had their mitts all over Alienware to a disgusting degree. I'd still rock this with a newer GPU today like a 1060-1070 and be happy with it. it's a very unique case, even if it is essentially a heat radiator for your house. Great for Canadian Winter here in Ontario. I absolutely love this gem.
