This song has a couple of main resonances; California is where Led Zeppelin broke the biggest when they came to the States and remained a favorite place for them to play for the duration of the band's existence. It is also inspired, at least partially, by Canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell; she is the "queen without a king, they say she plays guitar, and cries, and sings." In concert, after Robert would sing that line, sometimes he'd say, "And she comes from Canada". Mitchell had a song called "California" on her critically acclaimed album titled Blue. She was also a fan of alternate guitar tunings, as is Jimmy, and this song is in alternate tuning, itself. The lyrics mention California's earthquakes, how the canyons start to tremble and shake, and, funnily enough, when Jimmy and engineer Andy Johns came to California to mix the album, they did have an earthquake during the mixing of this song. They would play this live during a section of their concert they called "the acoustic set" where they'd play songs like this, That's The Way, Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, or a bit of Black Country Woman (which you haven't heard yet).

For me it is hard to say which one is my favourite on any album.
Nearly every song has been my favourite due to the emotions i am feeling at that present moment .
Led Zeppelin has unique style in which they make you feel the music.
Sal , I am enjoying the way that you are trying to deciphering the music .But its going to take you endless time of listening to each track.
50 years now and i am finding new magic in the songs.
Take your time, dont over think it,and it will come to you. ENJOY

This song is one of my favorites. Glad you enjoyed it. It's cool that your musical tastes are broadening as a result of listening to LZ. So happy that you gave them more of a chance after your first listen. ;)
As far a live performances, you're about to wrap up album 4 and since it's the halfway point on the way to the last album, maybe pick songs from each of the first four albums that you'd like to hear live and react to those for a while. Just an idea. ;)
Edit: If you tell us in advance those songs you'd most like to hear live, many folks here can tell you which were the best performances and which videos have the best quality.

My first true love was a very toxic relationship, we bonded over Zeppelin.. this song specifically. It remember the day we realized we either had to break up or we would be each others downfall. We both set crying in our music room with this song playing. It’s a very precious/devastating song to me.

Enjoyed your reaction. When you gave that early reaction some months ago, I commented that you probably wouldn't like Zep if you were really looking for something heavier and harder but if you gave them a real listen, you might grow to like them. It's good to see you giving them a full go... There is still a lot of good tracks left in their catalog so I'm looking forward to seeing more of your reactions.

Jimmy is of course ranked among the top masters of electric guitar. But his acoustic playing can be utterly exquisite.
Regarding Robert’s lyrics: they very much conjure up a particular time snd place…Robert loved the California counter culture scene of the late sixties and the rich musical culture that went with it. The reference to “ the people of the canyon” refers to Laurel Canyon, where so many of the musicians in that time lived, including Joni Mitchell (Queen without a King etc)

I too am a big fan of their acoustic music. The heavier electric rock was probably their strongest style. Songs like “I’m gonna leave you” and “Ramble On” are a couple of their best songs because they have a Progression from acoustic folk to hard electric rock and back again. Going to California is a a stand out song and a pure folk ballad is rare for Zeppelin, I wish they made an acoustic album and maybe they would have.

Great song. Plant always disparages his lyrics in LZ. But there's nothing wrong with those lyrics at all. They're beautiful and inspired. I lived in California for 30 years and just moved to the east coast. This song always pulls on my heart strings with memories of beautiful California. I don't really love the live version of this song though.
