Like some others who have commented, we played this song at our wedding. Many older folks in attendance, who had probably never heard of Led Zeppelin were moved to tears during this song.

I once heard the most perfect description of this song I’ve ever heard. A reactor had said that once the lyrics stopped and the Oregon took over that the sound was so beautiful that if the northern lights could make a noise that’s what it would sound like. Great reaction to an unbelievably beautiful song

Folk rock. Beautiful song, a genius composition. This is just another example of why LZ is set apart from the rest, and by a rather large margin. Also why it's so difficult to recommend "a" favorite or "the" best LZ song. There are so many, where does one start? I'm really appreciating your deeper dive into the complexities of their music rather than just giving the songs a cursory listen. Although you listened to several of their songs before deciding to begin at the beginning, I hope you include those songs again as you work your way through each album. Would be interesting to hear a second reaction in light of hearing their progression.

You're on a roll, Sal. Nice going. Genre? Forget it- some Zep songs are unclassifiable, some fit into two categories. Just know they started with Blues Rock, took up Funk, Folk, and Prog on their way to Hard Rock. No they didn't do metal... they knew when to stop. Peace from Canada.

This is such a beautiful song -- I love the ending when the organ fades out and then rebounds like sun emerging from behind some clouds. If you really liked this song, I'd wager you're gonna love The Rain Song off of their Houses of the Holy album.

Yeah…so many “genres” now. Zeppelins music initially based heavily on American blues and English folk music. All these guys were steeped in English folk as part of their DNA If you have to look for “how thus song fits” then look to folk music. But honestly, it’s just a lovely and sweet love song from Robert to his then wife Maureen. Seeing how much you loved this, I cannot wait for you to hear The Rain Song, from their fifth album…considered by many to be their best ballad …. And some of the most beautiful and complex acoustic guitar playing in rock.

I've said it before, favorites from LZ change by the mood of any given day! Robert's wife (a nurse) was the financial support in the very early days of his music career so that is partially what the thank you is about. Don't forget "Heartbreaker & Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman)" have to be reacted to as 1 continuous track (that means 2 songs in one reaction) or we who are following your journey into this band will be giving you negative feedback! I really dislike this modern day idea that all songs need to be placed into these pigeon holes know as a genre, this most certainly was NOT the case when these albums were released, the only generalized category back then was Rock and that's all that is necessary!

Robert wrote this for his wife, Maureen. This was the first song Robert wrote primarily on his own, although Jimmy had the "little drops of rain..." section and harmonizes with Robert during that passage. Jimmy was very happy that Robert was starting to come into his own for lyrics so that he, in turn, could focus more on the instrumentation, composition, etc., as well as the production. The slightly cringe factor though is this beautiful ode to his wife comes after the song he wrote about his affair with her sister. Anyway, I would consider this a ballad. How amazing is it that this is only their second album yet every song has been fantastically sculptured. The skill and craftsmanship is from beyond. As far as the next two songs go (Heartbreaker and Living Loving Maid), the majority of the fandom holds that the songs should be played consecutively, however, FYI, none of the band liked Living Loving Maid and Jimmy especially hated that US radio stations would play them together, because to him, they had no connection whatsoever. It's true, Heartbreaker ends abruptly, so you can hear how the next could flow easily immediately after, however, I'll take the unpopular opinion and side with Jimmy, and not play them together, since he produced the album, but you do you. 🙂 As I've said many times, Zep music is for moods so your favorite song is going to be the one that fits the mood for you at any given time.

Genres didn’t really mean anything in the 70’s. Rock came out of rhythm and blues but to be honest led zeppelin used country and folk influences almost as much as blues and rock and roll sounds.

I think one of the problems you have with the description of Led Zeppellin as just rock for a music genre is because this early in the rock music era the sub-genres were much less defined than you may be used to today or even in the later years of the rock scene. For me I always thought the advent of the punk rock scene was when the proliferation of the sub-genres began to excellerate. In the 69-70 years there basically just folk, country, blues, jazz and rock and roll which derived from influences of all of those. I heard once read a article that asked a lot of rock musicians who their musical influencrs were and I was amazed by how many of the English musicians mentioned American jazz and blues artists like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and Lead Belly. They also took inspiration from Celtic, British and American folk revivals.
