    I'm 66. I live in Maine. The wonderful 1995 to 1960 TV series, "The Adventures of Robin Hood", starring Richard Greene in the lead role, was how I first became familiar with the character. I would guess that would be the case with a lot of my generation on both sides of the pond (it was a British production, I think). Many, if not all, the episodes are available on TH-cam and I recommend them as charming and old fashioned entertainments. Greene makes quite a stalwart and likeable Robin.

    I LOVE the long videos! I was just remarking earlier that I don't like a lot of podcasts because people can't stay on topic. They tend to get off subject and seem to forget what they are supposed to be discussing. It's nice to be able to listen to a channel that sticks to the main topic of the show. And, the hosts don't have the attention span of a goldfish.
    I also really appreciate the extensive research on your subjects. When I like something, I want to learn everything I can about it. And, you always seem to choose topics in which I am truly interested. Please, keep up the great work, guys.

    I've always loved the legends and mythology that surrounds Robin Hood and his Merry Men. They may not be any more than tales of fiction, but if they aren't true, they ought to be true. Because these tales have social morals. Unlike Aesop the morals aren't stated openly but they are apparent to the thoughtful.
    One fact is true for sure: The king was a real person, so was The Sheriff of Nottingham a real person. I'm not proud of it but he is in my genealogy. These tales make social judgements on these people and others like them.
    Thank you for your channel. I subscribed because of this particular show.

    The 1980's British show, "Robin of Sherwood" is very good. It's a bit out there and a bit dated, but still incredibly enjoyable. Can be found on certain streaming services.
    The Richard Greene Brit television series, 1955-1959, is also a classic.
    1975 BBC miniseries, "The Legend of Robin Hood" very enjoyable.
    Also, I still think Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is one of the most entertaining adaptations. Partially because of Rickman, but really, it's a fairly well made and enjoyable film.
    The Errol Flynn, 1938 "The Adventures of Robin Hood" is still an absolute classic. As is the 1922 silent version starring Douglas Fairbanks. 1976 Sean Connery in "Robin and Marian" another good one. There's really quite a few good films over the years. And definitely check out the Hammer Films versions. Hammer films versions are more loose adaptations, but very stylized and Hammeresque.
    And really, who doesn't love that Disney film? 30 years later and I still have the music from that film playing in my head.

    Fun fact about the Errol Flynn "Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" version: Roy Roger's famous horse Trigger first appears as Maid Marion's horse in that film. The great archer Howard Hill actually shot actors with low power bows while they wore plywood armor to get some of the longbow kill shots. And yes, the Disney version still holds up as a great version! Ooda lalee!

    Robin being a Fitzwarren, A bastard relation of the Earls of Surrey makes perfect sense considering they controlled most of the lands that the Robin tales are set in from their Baronies based at Conisborough and Sandal Castles. Warrene's were big supporters of the Augustinian & Cistercian Orders and also the Templars and Hospitallers but not the Benedictines for some reason. Another interesting Robin/ Warrene connection is their Love of St Mary, Look up how many Chantry Chapels and Churches the Warrenes built dedicated to her.

    Robbing Hood was the name of the robe that Welsh guerillas used during the war with King Henry II. The legend of the green hooded men was then attributed to Richard, and then to John, but that was when it was sung about for the first time, and this is when schollars assume the real person lived.

    You should check out the 1938 version of Hollywood Robin Hood movie.
    While no more accurate than any Hollywood movie, the film archer was a world class archer that fired unique arrows.
    He was by accounts a large man, hence had unusually large arrows. This gave the arrows a unique sound.
    The film has the usual Hollywood tropes.

    • @caseysmith544
      @caseysmith544 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes same guy Howard Hill kind of pioneered the split eye shooting method where you use a single eye to shoot with while using the arrow to help guide the bow to the target or hunting object. One of the few Robin Hood movies to actually have an archer for Robin Hood when they needed it, doing a film from the back, this worked as the actor who played Robin Hood in this was a bigger guy Harold Flynn. It is one archers including myself use to this day in some way or another who use a bow sans any sights for target or in some countries, hunting. I use 95% the exact method of aiming that Howard Hill does. Just prior to this all Target archers shot point of aim using an aiming stick and hunters used either instinctive envisioning a dot/hole with eyes in the spot you want to hit or some type of instinctive gap, modern gap shooting was not really used. Howard Hill kept putting out the stick but he never used it after discovering the Split eye method that can be used for both target and hunting like he wanted that could not be noticed due to then target rules in 1920's and into the 1930's, this was mainly due to how he was stinking as a hunter using instinctive/instinctive gap. Cool part is Howard Hill had some Native in his linage, just the book I have Howard Hills Method of Shooting the Bow and Arrow by Jerry hill never really says how much and I do not think even Jerry his nephew knows.

    I genuinely don't remember how I first heard of Robin Hood, it really feels like a story I've always known. I still vaguely remember seeing the Disney movie as a kid but I also remember it as just another version of Robin Hood, not as the first version I knew, so I don't think that was it. It might have been like a story book version that my mum read to me as a small child or something. That feels likely. That or maybe I just saw some more obscure adaptation on TV.
    I do love the character and I wish there were more adaptations of it that focused on the smaller local adventures rather than including kings to it. And without needing to make Robin and Marian noble, I prefer the yeoman and the shepherdess.

    There wasn't a Sheriff if Nottingham until 1449. Until then they were the Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the Royal Forests. Henry de Facemberg was both the Sheriff of Yorkshire 1323 to 1327 and Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the Royal Forests in 1318, 1323 and 1329. This could be one of the reasons why Ribin Hood is linked to Yorkshire.

    I disagree with the premise of Robin Hood being “an British story with American actors”. Anything before the settlement of the American colonies, and arguably much of that before 1776, is effectively as much American history as it is British, as it is our joint history.

      @@SukieOOO You're looking at it from the wrong way. English history is not New Zealand history, but the History of the New Zealand colony originates in England. So the history of the New Zealand culture and heritage is rooted in England.

      @@JeffNeelzebub yeah that's true . I'm an Australian and always think we have no deep history here (white history) but I guess that is our history eh

    • @JeffNeelzebub
      @JeffNeelzebub 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@SukieOOO I don't know how history is generally taught in Australia, nor can I vouch for how it's taught everywhere in the US, but at the high school I went to, it progressed like this: ancient history (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, then the fall of Rome). Next, we learned about the Anglo-Saxon invasions and the formulation of the English nation, from the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Alfred the Great and the formation of the concept of "England". Then we learned about the Norman Conquest and the crystallization of English culture, Chaucer, and the like. Then we suddenly switch to Spain with Columbus' discovery of America and the conquistadors and all that. Then, ZOOM! back to England. We learned about the renaissance, the protestant revolution, Henry VIII, leading to Queen Elizabeth and the Spanish Armada. Around that point we learned about English raids and incursions into America finally leading to Roanoake and the English colonization of Virginia and the Pilgrims. At that point, we're focusing on English and American colonial history concurrently, a bit about Shakespeare, but we discuss English history less and less until we finally get to the American revolution and more or less stop talking about England.
      So with all that, you sort of see how Americans view our history. We start with the foundation of civilization, leading to the fall of Rome. Then our heritage is bundled up with the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and finally the English state. We don't really stop tracking that history until the revolution. That's basically how I think we view ourselves. So, from that lens, English history pre-1776 is more or less viewed as also our history.

    I was just reading about this. Robin Hood was supposedly the son of a Crusader Knight. A noble man.
    .
    But Robin was only a Bowman? No horse? No court, sentenced as a peasant. No table.
    A Crusader left for dead, who escaped for home. To fined his father betrayed?..
    ..
    I'm sure there has been people like Robin Hood. But hired by the Crown.

    I got a cool idea in my head for a modern day Robin Hood. It would require a dystopian or post-apocalyptic setting, where humankind has lost the comforts of modern day law and order and technology.... almost like a Walking Dead type of world, minus the zombies. Either a civil war, WW3, or a massive global depression and food shortage that leads to the breakdown of the grid. Something like that. Anyhow, kinda like in TWD, people have settled into colonies, and are basically living a pre-industrial lifestyle to survive, and of course the sheriff of Nottingham is a Negan-type, except with no redeeming qualities (you absolutely CANNOT have Jeffrey Dean Morgan play this role, Because it's impossible to not start liking him lol) anyhow the sheriff runs the most powerful settlement whos citizens are all living a life of ease and luxury by overtaxing all the surrounding settlements to the point where they are starving and barely surviving, sort of like the Capitol in the Hunger Games...so Robin Hood is the leader of a group of people that have gone into hiding because the sheriff of Neganham and his regime have sworn to execute them on sight. So they rob the rich settlement to bring food and supplies to the poor settlements, and eventually the outlaws convince all the people of those settlements to unite and overthrow the rich settlement. I picture him being like an ex-navy SEAL or something, and he has tactical woodland camo clothing and carries a compound bow and a machete (I see the machete as basically a modern day equivalent of the sword, anyway) ....

    There’s a 1970’s Robin Hood movie? The only ones I know are the original 1930’s with Errol Flynn (the only good one until proven otherwise) and the 90’s Costner vehicle. Plus the Disney cartoon and the Mel Brooks parody.

    • @WK-47
      @WK-47 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They say that one historian believed it was a corruption of his real name (Robert Fitzooth, something weird like that).
      What I remember reading years ago is that it was a modern spelling of an Old/Middle English surname, Hode. No idea if there's any truth to that.
      In any case, it's almost certainly not a pun and never was, whether there was any historical Robin Hood or not. The language simply evolved too much, even just between his supposed lifetime and the plays in Shakespeare's day.
      I mean, there's wordplay in Shakespeare's work that's completely lost on us due to how both spelling and pronunciation have changed since. (Imagine 'oars' being pronounced the same as 'whores' and imagine the potential for puns.)
      tl;dr: interesting idea, but it's just a coincidence.

    As an American of 82 years, Robin Hood was a moral "archetype" I had as a child. "Steal from the rich, give to the poor." Obviously, that false moral crèche collapses with any serious thought. But, as a childish idea it might seem right if compassion for people in "need" were a singular messure of morality. To point, -English folklore has had an influence at one time on American morals.
