  • Is Critical Theory Biblical?
You're in a conversation and someone says, “Since God cares about the oppressed, Christians should embrace critical theory, because its trying to eliminate oppression too.”
    What would you say?
Critical theory is one way our culture attempts to explain and confront power structures. Some Christians have embraced it as well. But what is it?
To understand critical theory, we need to understand it’s two primary claims. First, everyone can be divided into two groups: those who have power and those who don’t. Second, those who have power always oppress those who don’t.
But how do we know who the oppressed and who the oppressors are?
According to critical theory, the categories of oppressor and oppressed are based on your group identity. Things like race, gender, religion, immigration status, income, sexual orientation, and gender identity determine whether we are oppressed or one of the oppressors.
Of course, someone might be part of an oppressed group in one way but one of the oppressors in another way. That’s where the concept of intersectionality comes in. Intersectionality seeks to measure someone’s level of oppression based on how these group identities intersect in someone’s life.
For example, a black man is less oppressed than a black woman, who is less oppressed than a black lesbian.
In critical theory, the degree to which you are oppressed determines your level of moral authority.
The more categories of oppression someone identifies with, the more moral authority they have. As a result, the experience and perspective of a gay, black , woman is more valuable than the experience and perspective of a straight white man, regardless of what they have to say. In the same way, the more oppressed someone is, the less moral responsibility they have for their actions.
Those who aren’t part of oppressed groups-straight, white, men-gain moral authority by surrendering to those who have it-the oppressed. This is called being “woke.”
Some people claim that since Jesus cares about oppression, critical theory and intersectionality should be embraced by Christians. But critical theory and intersectionality are not consistent with Christianity, and here are three reasons why.
First, critical theory offers a different view of humanity than Christianity.
Second, critical theory offers a different view of sin than Christianity
Third, critical theory offers a different view of salvation than Christianity.

Love this question... Totally exposes the ridiculous hypocricy of the movement. :) Lately, the answer depends on your political views and brand of Christianity. Conservative, definitely oppressor. Even Candace Owens and Voddie Bachman qualify for that... But if you were a liberal who approves of abortion and homosexuality, the left would be happy to qualify you as the oppressed. But the Bible says "there is no Jew or Greek, we are all one in Christ." So if you are a Christian, the issue is moot. And if you were not a Christian, the issue is also moot because "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." In other words, there are really only two classes of people - the saved and the unsaved. Everything else is a construct of Satan and society in order to distract from the root problem or original sin.

No, it's simple math applied to "intersectionality." You've mentioned four key characteristics: three of them are a strike against you (white, Christian, & male), and one is in your favor (black). Hence, you are 75% oppressor and 25% oppressed. That being said, you subtly introduced two additional characteristics: math & history. Knowing math & history is a strike against us because both math and history are racist tools invented & manipulated by white oppressors, so if we add these to the equation, then knowledge of your background (history) and your attempt to use math make an extra two strikes against you. Thus, you are actually 5/6 (83%) oppressor and only 1/6 (17%) oppressed. See how easy this is? (Of course, those who calculate their own degree of oppression are using racist math to do so, but somehow they always forget to include that in their calculations against themselves.)

Speaking as one who is, ahem, critical of critical theory, I think the video oversimplifies drastically. For instance, I don't think it's accurate to say that critical theory views those with higher levels of intersectional oppression as also having more "moral authority"; rather they would say that the standpoints (lived experiences) of those who are oppressed allow them insight into their oppression that is unavailable to the oppressors. Also, I don't think it's entirely accurate to say that the Bible precludes race and gender as ways of understanding our identity; rather, it is the way that they inform our identity that differs from critical theoretical approaches. And that last point is important as well: there isn't just one critical theory, but there are a lot of different approaches which vary in emphasis and in postmodern/Marxian influence. It's important in these conversations that we allow for nuance.

    • @Hammster99

Well put! Nuance is important, even if we disagree with someone else's view

    • @Satribe101
      @Satribe101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I agree with what seems to be your main point, that we make our defense and teaching appropriate to the individual, not just blanket statements. I don't believe it was the intention to dismiss all the nuances, however, you're not going to cover them all in a 5 min video. In fact nuance is exactly the issue you are pointing out in your first example. The video appears to say that oppression does not give someone moral authority, and you seem to say they would argue that it does give them better insight because of their experience. The real issue is both of those are true, depending on the degree of what comes after. If I was abused as a child we might argue that I have better insight into child abuse. However, if I then later as an adult go back and murder my abusive parent we will empathize with the mental distress, but we cannot ignore the premeditated nature of the crime. My point is that experience gives a better opportunity for better insight, and we need to consider that carefully, but having more experience does not automatically give better insight.

    • @raykellysiler8759
      @raykellysiler8759 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Well said, intersectionality in this video is a bit misunderstood, similar to what I have heard from Ben Shapiro. It is not about taking power from one person and giving it to the "most oppressed" it is more about giving voice to the marginalized. And the point about the bible stating we are in God's image sounds a bit like "colorblindness". The idea that we don't see race and therefore ignore injustice and oppression. It sounds good, but what are you doing about your brothers and sisters who are being mistreated. (see Phil Vishers Holy Post video on race for more on this).
I think there are some fair critiques to critical theory, but there is a thin line between being critical to draw people back to the bible, vs being critical to move people to inaction toward social injustice. As the church, our record on this issue is pretty mixed. Let's not let our "religion" be what Marx criticized it as "an opiate" that blinds us to injustice. I find some of the discussion on this topic a bit ironic in that regard.

Just being in the group puts you into either camp by the critical theorist. Similar to collective punishment. The bible is not color blind. It does, however, bind the human species into one family. giving principles which would bring improved relations, if the counsel of scripture is taken. Yet, it does not glorify man. It glorifies God, much to the displeasure of Marx and others.

Theirs is much like a religion for people who claim to not be religious. Tbh, I think it's pretty expected. Most people need some kind of religion to sort of feed their soul. When people deny religion for the sake of denying it, you'll find many of them fall into these other sort of pseudo-religion, cults, and so on. They have their version of meaning, sin, community, values, and so on. They do not get the best parts of traditional religions, such as consistent standards, family values, and most importantly, a push toward forgiveness & mutual understanding, as well as the possibility of redemption.
In the end, this is a human problem. You are the same as the people who buy into critical theory, fundamentally. They deserve understanding and patience, just like anyone else. Putting them in a category far away from yourself allows you to turn your back on them & not feel guilty. I would argue that many of them don't even realize what they talk about is critical theory. If you talk to them about it, you'll find many of them still think they are traditional liberals. They are lost in an ideology they don't even understand, for the most part. & while I'm not native enough to think that's all of them, I do think even the most aware and flawed people still deserve to be treated as humans, rather than taking the easy way out & acting as though they are possessed. Again, this is the human condition. I think it's a very important distinction.

@skillz9267 this is the problem with people when you speak about the Bible tell the whole truth not just half of the truth. God is concerned about justice for everyone not just an individual. There’s a scripture in the Bible that tells you to love your neighbor as you love yourself. For example, if you don’t want to be oppressed don’t oppress anyone else, if you want mercy give others that same mercy you want for yourself etc. Certain people are so busy being negative and ungodly about this subject they miss the whole point. The Bible calls us to action to stand up for the down trodden, not stay silent and look the other way like so many love to do when they believe something doesn’t effect them, it’s easy for them to not care or think it’s unimportant, that’s apart of our selfish sinful nature. And yes if someone commits a crime they should definitely be punished for it but unfortunately this hasn’t always been the case in the past and now. Everyone should be properly held accountable for their actions, you, me the police, the politicians, etc., no one should be above the law I don’t care what position they hold in this world.

Great video. Definitely fell for the clickbait! Lol!
I'd also like to add these thoughts and see where they go...
    1. According to Critical Theory, a person may be FORGIVEN of their "sins," but they will never have an ASSURANCE OF PARDON. For instance, you can conceivably be white and be forgiven of the sin of racism, but you are in constant danger of falling BACK into the sin of racism unless you do something that symbolizes that you are continually in the process of disavowing yourself of the sin of racism (at least, the way that they define it). This flies directly in the face of passages like Romans 8:1-4.
    2. Critical Theory takes no account of God's eternal decree (his foreordaining all that comes to pass) OR the doctrine of God's providence (God's preserving and governing of all his creatures and all their actions). In other words, CT doesn't take into account the fact that God ACTUALLY owns and directs all people and all events for his own glory. According to CT, it is a result of "power and privilege" that I am what I am... According to Scripture, God works all things according to the counsel of his will (Eph. 1:11), and I am what I am because in his wisdom he put me here for particular purposes that redound to his glory. In CT, I am sovereign and I answer to man... in Scripture, God is sovereign and I answer to him.
    Thoughts?

This framing reeks of bad faith, in both the rhetorical and spiritual sense. There is an almost insidious implication that people of color or any other oppressed group is inherently not christian; It says that Jesus cared about the oppressed, but misses the very real fact that Jesus in his own lifetime was oppressed. He was in his own lifetime hounded and harried by hierarchical figures who he castigated, very publicly mind you, for upholding these oppressive structures. He had to contend with the violence, physical, verbal, legal etc., that came from those that sought to maintain those hierarchies; people and groups who did so in violation of God. He did not, nor did his disciples exist outside of these structures. He didn't simply care, he was beaten, broken, tortured and killed for it.

As a Christian, I agree with the basic tenets you state that most church websites would state on their about section. Yet what gets left unsaid is that Jesus literally lived a life of activism to socially liberate the world from sin and damnation. As mentioned elsewhere as well, many pastors and theologians were involved with the civil rights movement and the abolition movement. So were these movements too "woke" for the time, where slavery and segregation would still be in place today?
Not to mention, Jesus was also quite critical of the Jewish people. Paul was critical of both the Roman world and the behavior of the infant church.

    • @user-yp6yr9te7l
      @user-yp6yr9te7l 3 ปีที่แล้ว

No. Christ didn't live a life of "activism." He lived a life as an Atonement Sacrifice, a Rabbinic Korban. His significance is spiritual, NOT social. The social outcomes as a result of his Rabbinic teachings are merely a cascade down of his divine philosophy, not the goal. To claim the Crucifixion as "activism" is to completely misunderstand Christ's being and to misrepresent what he was doing. He died to liberate the world from sin, but he lived to condemn the world's sinners as just well. And He will return to judge the world, and throw half of it into eternal fire: ALL who refused Salvation, regardless of any identities that might exist in the world when He does return. Keep THAT in mind. The abolitionist and civil rights movements have ZERO to do with Critical Theory. Christ was not "critical" of the Jewish people. His Salvation was meant "first for the Jews, then for the Gentiles." He was critical of the Pharisees. And the word "critical" is not the same definition as Critical Theory. It has nothing to do with speaking to those in power. Christ was not a liberator of the oppressed. To say so would be to grossly limit what He is. He was the knife in the veil that separated Mortal Man from the Presence of the Father. Nothing less.

I read this post three times before I finally understood it. To me, the person who understands oppression the best is the individual who has experienced oppression firsthand.
Outsiders can say all they want, but if they haven't been the victims of oppression, they can only speak out of their own cultural malieu.
It takes a big heart to open our eyes to the pain that others are feeling.

So the title is just clickbait, huh? It does not ask a question, it does not ask if critical theory is biblical, it is a statement. It explicitly says that critical theory is biblical!
Then I look at the description of the video, and I see that now the title has been posed as a question. And then I actually listen to the video and it describes how critical theory and intersectionality are not consistent with the Bible. So the video itself directly contradicts the title!
Edit: by the way - I want to make it clear that I really loved the video and the content. I appreciate messages like this and I wish that more people would watch it. What I don't like is the appearance of dishonesty. And clickbait tactics or bait and switch tactics are dishonest to me. I don't like deception in any way. And that was frustrating to me about this video, the message is good but the way it was presented originally just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. And I also want to make it clear, I am not even sure that the clickbait or bait and switch was even intentional. I don't want this to be an attack on the character of the presenter or Channel, but I just want to express my frustration with any appearance of deception.

Why was this on my feed? What did I just watch? When you are born again and believe in Jesus you are no longer oppressed by any means because the Son has set us free and if He sets you free you are free indeed. Not this mess here. Civil rights and many groups formed their false gospel that’s why they still feel oppressed. And to assume that someone who has power automatically oppressed someone because of their position is ridiculous. It shows the mindset of who came up with this “theory”. It is when you are put in positions of power where you see the true character of someone come out whether they are empower hungry or actually good leaders. The act of oppression in itself is a verb that you actively have to do it’s not subconsciously done. The act of feeling oppressed is a result of the fear of man. This happens when people believe in the identities that Satan gave the world such as gay man, white man, black man instead of believing the identity that God gives you. You are either a man or a woman. You are either righteous and follow His Word or you are wicked. That’s it. Jesus is my identity. My identity is in Christ. People call me a black woman but I’m not I am a woman. This theory is for people who struggle and want praises and acceptance from man and not God. When you don’t care about someone opinion of you you don’t feel “oppressed”. Wow this doctrine of critical theory comes straight from Satan. Satan wants the world to think everyone is a child of God but scriptures clearly states that their are children of the devil who do the desires of their father the devil which is sin and there are those who are born again and are adopted as sons (children) of God and belong to God. The devil has been working full time with this blasphemy.

@Patrick Kazan there's a difference in physical/worldly oppression and oppression of the soul. The commentor is saying we are truly free and no longer a slave to sin/death as our faith and God's grace allows us to be brought back into his presence, to be able to share eternity with Him. Doesn't negate the suffering of people on this earth but fleshly suffering now, in any form, is only for a fraction of time compared to the eternity of peace we will have at the right hand of Christ.

My first objection was that it presents several false dichotomies.
Some of those were reportedly presented by "Critical Theory".
So then the speaker wouldn't be responsible for those, except ... the speaker keeps his narrative confined to those.
      --
      Meanwhile,
I lean left on most issues.
So do most of the people I have regular social interactions with.
Yet, I'd never even heard of "Critical Theory" before.
I asked around. Neither had they.
      ---
As I listened, I found myself agreeing with small parts of it (like the general idea of "power corrupts"), but disagreeing with larger parts of it (like: the entire premise of identity politics).
      --
I also reject the absolutes; in both "Critical Theory" (per the speaker's explanation of it),
And all the absolutes presented by popular Christian theories as well.
I think the reason the speaker dared not take on *Identity politics* directly was that his use of the term Christian is: exactly that. So he had to skirt around that and go after failings that he can afford to mention.
      --
I think the speaker had the same reason for not specifically going after the black-and-white thinking of Critical Theory.
      --
He can't afford to go directly after that behavior because his own religious culture (and texts) have plenty of that; which they too need to work on overcoming.
      --
Beyond that, the speaker draws listeners into a few of his own false dichotomies.
Such as speaking of "Christianity" like it's one objectively and universally defined thing.
What it means to him is NOT what it means to countless others. And that would be true no matter who was speaking there.
      --
It's strange that I'm lectured by Christians about 'making sure I keep that in mind' ... equally as often as I find myself reminding Christians of that fact.
      --
What the speaker should have said each time was "My understanding of Christianity ..." or "Christianity, as I know it ..." (is at odds with that ideal because ...).
      --
The reason he speaks that way
      is not an accident.
      He's trying to insert himself into all Christian listener's mental narrative as an authority who speaks on behalf of a unified whole;
a whole which doesn't actually exist.
      ---
      Other problems include:
defining "woke" in a way that will further sour self-identified Christians against the term.
He avoided bringing it his audience's attention that there are other (and more common) contexts and definitions for that term. In fact, there's no reason to include that in the video at all ... except as a way to prime his listeners to have their personal biases triggered whenever they might later hear someone identify with that expression.
      --
He's dog-training his listeners; to respond to certain words and concepts like an attack god being trained to respond to certain sounds, smells, etc.
      ----
The next bit of manipulation came when he gives Christians as a whole (a veiled inference to the No True Scotsman fallacy) ...
a false alibi as non-bigots by describing Christianity's view of 'all humans being the same' ... on the premise of "we were all created in (that) God's image".
      --
Besides that actually being a big part of the species-ism that underpins the mistreatment of animals because of ideas like "we're special" and "those were created for our use", ...
      --
He conveniently omits the fact that racism is actually still a problem that most denominations are still struggling with, and that some still openly embrace it, and how progress away from majority-racism among Christians only happened fairly recently on the timeline of Christian-cultural evolution, and that there are many other forms of bigotry (sexism, anti-LGBT, intolerance for other faiths, contempt for non-believers, etc) still common for Christians.... and which Christians are not really inoculated against by the concept of "we all look like Dad".
      ---
      There's more.
This gets us about halfway through the video.
I'll try to make time for the rest later.

Having now watched a few of your presentations I can say that you have a winning formula and are producing outstanding content. The _only_ change I would make is to lower the background music _even further,_ so that it's barely audible. I realise that there are good and necessary reasons to include background music with each presentation, but I am merely putting into words what others will be quietly thinking. *Keep up the excellent work!*

So so so over simplified and biased. CT is about empathy and perspective taking, basically about recognizing that some perspectives have historically been valued more than others. In the United States, we have not all had the same experiences of freedom or access to educational opportunities. Will you listen to those marginalized experiences? Will you pause and invite people from a different faith, socioeconomic class or level of education into conversations? Humility and listening skills. Curiosity over certainty. Empathy over judgment. Jesus daily practices compassion with me, and we are called to do the same with others.

The video is well done as a message to Christians. Regarding dealing with matters in society, Christians are often socially myopic--of necessity, to remain faithful to the Word of God. In the real world Critical Theory is not in play. It is a straw man. Social engagement (no, not "social gospel") requires personal engagement inside communities. Justice should not wait for wrongdoers to confess, repent, and be reconciled to God. That's something they can do under penalty of civil law, or in jail. Racism is a great evil that sometimes leads to criminal acts. Historically, the church, as an institution, has not championed important societal change. Believers in Christ, such as John Lewis, Dr. Martin Luther King, and countless unknown Christ followers, have championed change working within, not from without."The biblical response is confession, repentance, and reconciliation to restore fellowship between offended and guilty parties." This is a sound statement of theory and hope. Reality is much closer to the problems people face. Christ empowers us on many levels and we all have a role.I think most Christians should focus solely on preaching the Gospel and winning souls to Christ.

While there is nothing said here that is wrong, I am left wondering if it only serves to congratulate our intellect for responding to critical theory, consequently encouraging people to dismiss factually true points about disparate economic, health, and social outcomes for people of color. What if we strove for justice in this world not because it is a matter of salvation, but because this is God’s world? Not because we assent to a particular academic theory about humanity, but because we have not turned a deaf ear or a blind eye to our black brothers and sisters? God’s world is full of injustice inflicted on people made in his image, and if we “let the same mind be in [us] that was in Christ Jesus” (Phil 2:5), then we will surely be grieved by the reality around us and humbly do all we can to help.

Well....I think he clearly spelt out that oppression is wrong. The video seem to be pointing out the fact that believers should not jump and follow an ideology because it looks like it's biblical when actually it is demonic. He seem to be trying to help believers who love justice but hate Identity politics and would not want to be manipulated. This however doesn't take away from the fact that we need to confront injustices simply because they are wrong.

I definitely agree with the points made in this video. However, I don’t think it offers tangible alternatives to Critical Theory that those who support it could reasonably gravitate to. Salvation in Christ is indeed to the solution to all of our problems, since sin is the root cause for the evils of the world. But people who are saved (Christians) should be producing fruit that betters the world as a result and ‘justice’ is one of them. That’s why many Christians are trying to involve themselves in activism against certain systems they deem oppressive, such as some (emphasis on some) law enforcement agencies that may abuse their power. While the solution will always be Christ, let’s not use that as an excuse when to remain silent when we see various injustices occurring across the country that we don’t immediately relate to
