I've been riding bikes and motorcycles for years and have a solid understanding of how a suspension works. My brother sent me this link and told me to check it out, you couldn't have done a better job explaining everything. PERFECT. Keep up the good work, and don't feel afraid to make long videos if you keep this detailed content!
@@TheLostCo This makes me think many riders that have all of these fork settings probably do not utilize their full potential as they were intended. @@TheLostCo Yip . . . and I come back to your video every so often for a refresher! For me it is the fact that you don't just explain it with word but with great examples. So many times during this video i said "Riiiiiiiggggghhhhht! Now I get it!". Great work!
Awesome tutorial!! As a “visual” guy, the real life examples on the trails to show high and low speed made all the difference! You’re a genius bro!! 🙏🏼🤙🏼
Yeah, I have watched this video about 5-6 times now. This video is incredibly well done. I was a little nervous when I first bought my new forks because of all the adjustments, but this video completely put me at ease and I thought "OK this is totally workable." Keep on rockin Lost Co.!
Great video, might have already been pointed out but the GRIP2 has about 9 LSR/HSR clicks, 12 LSC and 16 HSC. Sometimes clicks vary by 1 or 2 because of manufacturing of the dial detents, which is why you measure from closed not open (those "extra" clicks would have no impact as circuits would be fully open by then anyway).
Setting sag with full body weight is brilliant. I've been trying to carefully climb onto my pedals for 20 years without dynamically compressing the fork or falling over. While I will have to reset my norm from 20% to 30% for the extra weight, everything else just got so much easier. Thanks, Mike.
Glad we could help!! Next time you need some parts for your bike, check us out at thelostco.com and contact us with literally any questions and we'll be happy to help 🙂 -Mike
I have no idea how I’ve never seen this vid before, what an excellent explanation and demonstration with real world examples on a trail. Wow, well done!
I think what a lot of us riders would like to see is a guide about the float x2,like how to set up and how these settings apply for a float x2. Love the vids guys
Excellent stuff 👌 Still gets slightly confusing at times. For example roots at high speed is an example of HIGH speed situations. Later on were being advices to slow down the LOW speed rebound if we are bouncing around on roots at high speed. I'm sure Mike just had different scenarios in mind when describing this. But for me as a suspension novice the distinction between high and low speed situations is the trickiest part 🤔
Just got a new bike with the Grip 2 damper and my first ride made me wonder if I'd made a mistake on the purchase. This gives me a lot of hope that it's just a setup thing. Coming from a Grip damper, I've always wanted more support in certain spots and corners in the open setting, and it sounds like this is a real possibility with the Grip 2. Thanks for the great video! Looking forward to fine tuning everything.
Super overview with real world application. Thanks! It's amazing how little of these 'tutorials' there are considering how much of a black art this appears to be and how big the impacts are.
This is the best 36 grip 2 video out there. Thanks! I wanted to point something out about this fork, not sure if you mention it in other vids. The "zip tie" trick where you carefully slide a zip tie past the seal and release air makes a HUGE difference in this fork. Mine got to this weird point where I had to lower my pressure 20psi to get proper sag, and was just pounding my arms to pieces. Tons of stiction too, I thought my damper was going out but didn't know what was going on. Last ditch before taking it to a shop, I did the zip tie thing and air came out. Not a *ton* of air, mind you, but noticeable. The fork instantly went back to buttery magic. The difference seriously blew my mind and the fork went from meh, back to the best fork ever. It's not for nothing that the new Foxes have an air burp button on them to do this same thing.
I watched this about a year ago and thought I understood it. Now after riding a lot more and over much more varied terrain, I "REALLY" understand it a lot more and it explains a lot of what's been going on when I ride. Thanks for the great video!!
this is probably the best, most easily understandable guide i have yet seen on the internet on this topic. and english isn't even my native language. congrats!
Thanks for putting this together! I've been on my 180mm grip2 for a few weeks now, 160lbs riding steep laguna beach trails and I was feeling a lot of what you identified with the base settings. Excited to apply your method to get it dialed in!
Killer video to outline not only what each setting does as it relates to the fork, but also demonstrating them on the trail. One suggestion, have a downloadable table for print out of such complex forks. It would be sweet to have that on the trail while we dial in. This is sweet! Thanks for the passion you put into it.
Thanks for this video. Probably the most useful guide on suspension setup I’ve seen on TH-cam. Very clear explanation on how low/high speed rebound/compression afects your riding. Great stuff keep it up!
Thanks a ton Pedro! I'm so happy my video has helped a ton of people on the confusing topic of suspension knobs! If you're really stoked on the video, make my day and buy me a coffee @ ko-fi.com/misterlostbikeshop . 👍
I want to thank you for this video. It really helped me realize I wasn’t utilizing my fork’s full potential. I thought I was just bad lmao. What I didn’t know was that my high speed rebound was too high so I was bouncing around and chattering around in rock gardens. Now with my settings dialed in, I can rip through that same section TWICE as fast and yet still feel so comfortable. I might still be a terrible rider, but at least I have more confidence! Thanks!
Been out of the game for a bit and dived back in recently, and this viddy brought me to where I need to be. Last bike was 2006ish via a trek to- fuel 98. Now grabbed an Alchemy and the differences in tech are pretty dope. My biggest gripe is the drastic change in rider position and frame sizing. But I dig it. One love
Really enjoying your videos. I've always wanted a knowledgeable mechanic to make in depth videos backed by knowledge rather then marketing material. Cheers!
Thank you for posting this, I am coming off a Bronson with a Pike fork that I loved (bike burned in recent fires) and I updated to a Nomad with the Fox 36 fork and found the fork to be really harsh and the handling was not great at high speeds - was getting deflected a ton. I added 2 air tokens per your suggestion, backed off on High Speed Rebound and backed off on High Speed Compression and it helped a ton.
I have commented before, this is an ace video. Better than Fox put out, I have watched it a few times now as you cover so much info that its a lot to take in…..well done and thanks 👊🏻
This opened my mind up to the possibility of actually trying more sag/less pressure with my 36 170mm Grip 2 fork. I'd previously been between 15 and 20% sag. So, I added a second volume spacer and dropped pressure some for 25% sag and am about to do some test-n-tune today! I'm just shy of 200 lbs in gear and noticed by trying to set sag with your method of hanging above the bars, I'd be running a bunch more pressure to get 30% ish sag, closer to 1 psi per kg of body weight which seemed a bit much for my general application and trails. Thanks for sharing your methodology, Mike. Much appreciated 🤙
Cool vid! Now I can sound like rider A out there. I did miss the typo comment up top and had my compression quite off though haha. It still rode amazingly. Thanks Mike and team.
I hope this video helped you set up your front springer! This video is aging like smashed grapes, and I really wish we had a better microphone setup back in the day 😂
What a great video and explanation. I've never really bothered with fork settings because I had no idea what to do. I now feel confident in giving it a go. Thanks heaps, there was an absolute ton of work you've done here.
This was fantastic! I've been so confused about setting up my fork for a couple of years since I got it and this video was just soooo good! I've got it all dialled in now and loving it. Brilliant!
Thank you soooooo much for the kind words! This is why I've always stayed with the bike industry. Some of the most polite customers and community around!
Perfect! This video really helped me out. Finally got a Fox 38 fork with the Grip 2 and was having a hard time dialing in the front to feel nice. The compression was the trick. My fork was diving way too much on the steep and turns. During the ride I was messing with the rebound. No wonder I was never able to get the front to feel nice like the stock grip damper that came with my bike. Gonna go out for another ride and dial in rebound first than compression. Really useful info :)
Mike & the Lost Co team, thank you for all your time/effort on putting together yet-another mind-blowing epic "ah-ha!" video (just as epic as your 1hr 'fork service' video)!! This approach is very practical and so different from all the conventional how-to videos & mfg manuals (ie. about how to push down for sag measure at 4:20), yet is so well-articulated on what's-for-what on trails that it all makes sense. I watched it a few times slowly with many pauses to fully understand, pre-set a baseline in my garage, then hit the trails today for micro-adjustments, and - voila! - my fork is like a completely different fork! Although I had taken my time to carefully dial in my current fork and happily settled as such for the past 2yrs, this is another new "high" with my same fork. To put it in dog analogy (LOL), I'd say my current fork was previously set like a "border collie" (always on the go-go-go) for the past 2yrs (I loved it), but now my fork is more like a "great dane" (tall/composed & reserved - so calm/quiet) thru gnar - and I love it!! Just after doing my fork oil change with the new seals I got from Lost Co over the weekend, this video was perfect timing to completely revisit my fork setup. Thanks again for this awesome in-depth tutorial!
When you reduce positive chamber volume you change the ratio between possitive and neg. chamber...that is why the sensitivity from the begining is better witkh tokens. Very good video!
Brilliant videos! So many TH-cam vids out there on bike maintenance but for some reason yours are on a level I can fully relate with. I’ve serviced my fork thanks to you and it feels amazing. And despite all the fiddling with my grip2 fork I still think I can further dial it in after watching this video. Please keep them coming!!
Love this vid mate. Really makes it easier to understand how each adjustment works on the trail. And I totally agree that starting with compression backed off completely, makes it easier than starting with fox's recommendations. Set up the feeling of the air spring and then fine tune with compression. Thanks for the effort you guys put in.
Thanks, Mike! This video encouraged me to open up some of my settings a bit more and it really helped. I would love to see additional videos on setup and adjusting for different types of trails. I appreciate how you break it down and give examples.
Wow. Just...wow! Great video. Can't imaging the time you put in on this vid. Just got me a new Pivot with FOX forks and GRIP2 damper. This is a great, great explanation...and the different adjustments/nomenclature FINALLY clicked for me. Until this vid, I was always getting the various settings mixed up in my noggin. Really appreciate this vid. THANK YOU.
Watching this great video with my fox manual in hand was super helpful in helping me understand how to set my fork. Which is amazing as I have never ridden a bike with suspension before. Thanks your video help me to start understanding how technology has advanced since i stopped riding 20+ years ago
Just bought a Specialized pemberton edition bike with this fork in 150 mm and was having trouble getting my settings right and honestly the Fox website wasn’t much help so thank you very much for this in-depth setup guide 👍😎
Ah yesss, finally a great video on setting up this fork! I just could not get mine dialed properly. And although I read all of the technical instructions on how to set LSC, HSR etc.., it's only after watching your video that I now understand what those settings actually mean when brought into the trail. Congrats, keep those videos coming. One on the Fox X2 would be really cool as well.
Heck yeah! Any questions you run into, just let me know and I'll be happy to help! Suspension tuning can definitely be confusing, especially with so many knobs to turn haha.
Great vid, Mike! I am still curious about one thing - increasing air pressure vs. adding more compression. Do you have any personal decision factor, when to apply a particular one (rather than the other one and vice versa)? Thanks.
Agree with sag, I did recommended 20% and it felt stiff, found around 30% to feel great!! I’m a heavy rider and went from reccomend 95psi to 75psi through a month of riding.
That was the best explanation I have heard yet regarding setting up this fork. Liked, Subscribed, Bell Notification clicked. Well done. Might reach out to you about my 2016 Fox 36 Fork (160). I have never felt I got it dialed they way I wanted.
Great video. I have already learned most of what you say in the video but you teach it in a great way that’s fun to watch and supports my feelings. I am sharing your video with other Fox riders. Thank you
Huge thanks on the token recommendation, I kept taking air pressure out of my 180, it definitely is hard to get to the top of the compression! Excited to throw tokens in and tune it
How did this turn out for you. My Fox 36 came with no tokens and I can't get it to feel plush, I had no idea adding tokens might help until I watched this
Hi dude, can you please comment your set up for your forks and rear coil? I’ve set mine up but I’m not really happy with it and I would like to try a different set up and I think I ride similar to you. Cheers. 🤟
Awesome video. It has been so helpful, but I think you have the number of clicks HSC and LSC mixed up on the written slide at 17.06mins in. It says HSC has 10 clicks whilst LSC has 6 clicks. This is the other way around on my grip2 damper at least (HSC = 6 clicks, whilst LSC = 10 clicks). Keep up these amazing videos. Thanks
Great tutorial. Need some help though. At 11:20 you adjust the front suspension low speed rebound and high speed rebound individually. On my Grip2 the knobs turn together. What seems to be the issue?
Same with mine. have you found any info on this? Also as per sticker, slow and fast are opposite ways of what he mentions. Just adds to my confusion, I need another video.
@@philbenjamin my sticker says slower is clockwise so that coresponds with his instructions (fully closed=full clockwise=slowest). However did not figure out why HSR and SSR is not individually adjustable on my fork. the HSR and LSR turns together whatever I do. I will reach out to Fox about this and provide their answer in this thread. Have a nice weekend
Great video. I am waiting for the delivery of my new Orbea Rallon which will be fitted with the new Grip2 fork (and the nbew Flost X2 shock). I'm new to MTB but I ride and used to race motorcycles (roadracing) and setting up suspension, aside from measurable sag, has always been a struggle for me. Being in California your examples in the video are perfect as I can apply my style with your different examples. My only advice that made a difference for me when explaining high speed and low speed differences, whether rebound or compression, would be that it refers to shaft speed. You do say it, maybe just revisit a couple times. Awesome video, saving it for when the bike shows up, which can not be soon enough.

Just bought a Specialized pemberton edition bike with this fork in 150 mm and was having trouble getting my settings right and honestly the Fox website wasn’t much help so thank you very much for this in-depth setup guide 👍😎
best video I've ever seen of fork setup. Congrats!
Thanks a ton man! A setup video for the Float X2 and DHX2 should be done within the next month hopefully!
Fantastic video and great explanation of the fork young fella. That's cleared things up for me.
Awesome video. just setting up my fox 36 Grip2 . very helpful keep up the good work!
Mike, I really enjoy your enthusiasm and informative vids! Your energy is contagious - keep it up!
Speaking of liking suspension progression - riding linear Transition. Brilliant
Yes!!! Thank you for this in depth and easy to follow tutorial! Can’t wait to tune my fork this weekend.
My Fox 36 came with no tokens and I can't get it to feel plush, I had no idea adding tokens might help until I watched this
any chance you'll do a similar vid for the DPX2, please?
Yes please
I honestly hate my DPX2!
@@parisgalanis9165 Why, just curious
@@rmpoole1302 It is impossible to set it up correctly in my Transition Sentinel since it will be either too hard or too soft.
I love the Dpx2 on my Yeti 45
What an awesome video! This explained everything that I've been wondering for years.
Amazing video and really helped me understand my new fox 36 grip 2 fork. Thanks
You made it simple. Best guide I have ever seen. Thank you.
Thanks
Best informative grip 2 video I’ve watched
Great to hear you learned a thing or two!
Philippe Benjamin no, was hoping for a reply from the guy in the video
@@philbenjamin my sticker says slower is clockwise so that coresponds with his instructions (fully closed=full clockwise=slowest). However did not figure out why HSR and SSR is not individually adjustable on my fork. the HSR and LSR turns together whatever I do. I will reach out to Fox about this and provide their answer in this thread. Have a nice weekend
@@jesperlaursen3917 Yes, please let me know what you hear back from FOX. Have fun on the trails!
@@philbenjamin Better late than never - My damper was damaged somehow. Fox fixed it and now i am able to dial them individually.
This was awesome dude, thanks so much! I’ve not got any tokens and was having exactly the issues you outlined at the end. Off to get 2 spacers 🥳
My new favorite TH-cam channel! You guys are awesome.
Great tutorial man, exactly what I needed. Many thanks from Ireland. As other people have mentioned an X2 equivalent would be very welcome.
with shocks it is not that straight forward as you have different linkage designs.
just got this fox 36 grip 2 2021, thanks for share 🔥🔥
Thanks for putting the time in to make this video, some really useful information!
Great video! crystal clear with video examples ! Congrats!
such a good video!! Please can you explain why the 36 dot have a lock out. What do you do if you clim long way uphill?
