I’m gonna have some trouble communicating how incredibly helpful and in-depth to the extreme that this video was, I now feel like I literally know forks inside and out and feel that I would be confident enough to have a go of the lower leg and air spring service (which I didn’t really know what it was before). So thank you for putting in the huge amount of time to explain this reasonably understandable process in such incredible super extreme detail, and i now know what an air spring is and what it does and how to service it. I love these mechanic Monday videos and look forward to the amazing future episodes!

Have been watching more from you this morning and this one made me subscribing a even expressing my appreciation of you and your way of doing videos. Have been showing this video Today to 2 more friends of mine and we all feel now confident doing this level of servis ourselves. Thank you ! You represent the role model of how guide videos should be done. When you advise to clean inside of guffers/main bushing, you also explain why. When you mention negative chamber, you expain what it is and what it does. Amazing and best ever !

  • @TheLostCo
    @TheLostCo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

💥 READ THIS BEFORE YOU START 💥
    1) You will also need to inject 3cc of Fox 20wt Gold Oil into the positive chamber of the air spring. I forgot to film and edit that part into this video. We will now mix Slickoleum and 20wt Gold oil together to create about 3cc's of the mixture, and then slather that on top of the air spring piston and lightly around the seals.
    2) The reason this fork sucked down into it's travel was not due to the amount of grease on top of the air spring piston, it was simply because I let the air out too quickly. Just let the air out more slowly and hold the fork up in it's travel and that will not happen.
I have been fortunate enough to work with some of the best suspension mechanics out there, and I've learned a ton over the years. Never stop learning!

From a career mechanic (motorcycle)......Great job of going in depth for all your processes and shop tricks.
Helpful hint.....when you are dealing with a small part that is likely to become a "f**k spring" (small non-magnetic part that will likely find the largest and most immobile thing in your shop to roll under) put soft rags on the floor and drape another one loosely over the work prior to the point at which the part is likely to release.

After 5 years, this remains by far the best video on rebuilding Fox 36 forks. Have watched it several times while servicing my bikes. Today's feat included replacing the original Fox 36 Rhythm fork on my 2023 Specialized Levo SL with the new Fox 36 Factory fork I recently got from you. Then, I decided to rebuild the Rhythm for future use...and found that its air spring was way over-greased as this video had shown. Thinking back, I believe that virtually all of my suspension parts and related tool purchases have come from The Lost Company. TLC always seems to have the best Fox and SRAM parts inventory and pricing. You certainly have a fan here! Now, what to do with all of these used shop towels?

Very interesting and well done video. I only have one question about the GRIP2 service: the official FOX video (like other tutorials) indicates to push the cartridge rod upwards for 3/4 of its travel in order to release the excess oil. In other videos some don't. By pushing the rod up so much, wouldn't you risk letting too much oil escape from the cartridge? However, I suppose it is used to avoid adding oil to the 40cc PTFE already included in the FOX reference table. Thank you so much! K

Great video for Fox fork servicing. The grease on the upper seals as well as removing excess on grease on the Air Spring make a huge difference to how responsive a fork can be. Unfortunately from the factory and with many shops - this is neglected and fork small bump compliance performance suffers as a result.

Each lower legs had 2 inner glider. Maybe with PTFE surface, I donť know. Is it necessary to put oil between these gliders of the lower leg? Or how is upper glider lubricated?

Best fork service video I've ever seen. Nice! Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to my Grip2 arriving and getting it on my fork. I really appreciate the work you put in to make this tutorial.

I want to give my Fox F100RCl from 2006 a major service. but can you tell me exactly what is meant by damper side oil bath spring-side oil bath and air chamber. Am i right that the air chamber is where the airpump is mounted on the top of the left fork. Spring-side bath oil put in the underside of the left and right fork and the damper side the top of the right side fork put in?? I had seen several youtube films but now i am confused. And this ifo i have from the fox side.
Best regards and thanks for the effort.
    Greatings from holland

You just cleared up so much for me. I feel like I now have the confidence to do this myself. I've got the tools and parts to bump up the travel on my grip 2 fork to 150. Just need the 5 wt oil now. The guy at my shop said to just use the gold in both sides, but after some investigation and watching this video I'm going to hold off until the 5wt comes in.

i noticed that RockShox forks require very little oil in the lower legs... the 36 uses TWENTY TIMES more oil than the lyrik on the damper side and 5 times more oil on the air side. isn't such a little amount of oil going to make performance worse?

Hi, for a RockShox Upgrade, you Upgrade the airspring and the damper.
For the fox, only the damper.
Does this mean the Performance fox already has the same damper as the Elite or factory?

I have a 32 Float SC Performance. I had to fit a new Star Nut so I had to remove Fork from my bike which included me removing the Grip3 remote connection. Anyway it was fiddly trying to refit the remote and set up correctly, during this process I lost a little oil from the top damper (as it unwound took much and popped out) It is setup correctly now and I get lock out which is all good but I’m a little worried about the oil I lost, it was only about 5ml but do you think this is ok?

Shouldn't be the oil ring of the damper side drained in 5WT oil? You drained both of them in the 20WT oil. ANSWER: 39:20 hihi

Why hasn’t fox changed their QC, they still over grease the living hell out of the air springs even on the $1,200 forks. I’ve had my fork for two months and now I can’t ride.

    1. I have a Fox 34 that can't even use a GRIP2 Damper. 2. I don't even need to do a service on my fork.
    Still watched the whole thing.

My Fox 34 ctd needs more pressure after service than before. It took 50 psi before and now it needs 70 to be fully extended to 160mm. When I go down to 50 psi the stanchions hide in the lowers a few milimeters.

I just watched Jules do a lower leg service on 2021 fork and in comments Jordi says use 20wt oil for foam rings on air side and 5wt ptfe oil on damper side foam ring... you used 20wt on both foam rings. Can you comment on this discrepancy

Excellent video, just one question. Fox says to fully pump before putting the lower legs, you didn't do it, why?

Slickolium might be cheap for you guys in the states but is bloody expensive over here 🇬🇧 given the price fixing deal with sram butter or slick honey so the those brands can keep their profit and they ain’t cheap either 😡
    Great video though thankyou

Hey, i took a small spill today and rubbed my 36 stanchion on hard packed loose dirt. There’s no burrs but there are like rub marks/scratches. Nothing really that my nail digs into when sliding over them. Is that something that should cause concern?

Great tutorial, thank you. Question regarding the oil on the foam ring for the damper side. I have a 2021 Fox 38 that has the channels that brings oil up from the lowers and puts oil onto the foam rings. Would you not want to use the Teflon oil on the foam ring on the damper side, as there will be more Teflon oil being brought up to the foam ring. I don’t think you want to mix the oils. On an older style fork without the channels it probably doesn’t matter. Your thoughts.

I noticed you saturated both foam rings with only one type of oil, but doesn't each side of the fork take different oil. I know you said that's ok, but I did notice that my old foam rings had different types of oil (one was saturated with the red stuff and the other was more yellow) -> I'm assuming that means they were saturated with the two different oil from the factory.

This video is much better than everything, that I saw till this moment for that kind of service. Even better, than FOX original videos - they are too poor. Great!
    Thanks, dude!
Now, waiting for the X2(2019) service. ;)

Didn’t read all the comments so my apologies if this was discussed. What about the oil in the damper itself? Does that mostly stay in and is never serviced or does it slowly mix with the oil in there and slowly get changed that way?
Thanks for the extra help over the Holiday with my last minute order and not so patiently waiting for my Grip2 to arrive. 😅

Great Video! Super informative and helpful and entertaining!
On top of that, I couldn't agree more on your habit of keeping all the parts in the right order and constantly making sure everything is tidy and clean!!!
It just makes your life sooo much easier!
I am learning the craft of bike mechanic myself (Spezialized concept store... I love it!) and constantly trying to get my colleagues to develope that habit... ;)
    Loving your videos!
    Keep up the great work!

Glad this video gave you the confidence needed! We don't have a DPX2 video as of now, but doing that and the X2 has been on our list for a while. Hopefully we will get 'er done this winter.

What’s your opinion on just changing the oil in a fit4 damper yearly ? I think a full service yearly is a lot. I would do lowers and air side yearly.
