      if he died it would have been more glorious. would losing the symbol of hope have hurt the world still? abseloutly. but seeing him stand there a withered husk? THAT'S damage to the hero comunity it's much harder to come back from than merely just seeing him die to take down the ultimate evil.

      Not exactly, a big point the series makes is that All Might when he was active carried the heroes not only because he was the strongest but because he represented a symbol that no matter what he'd be there to help.That symbol that he represented still gave people hope even when things were really bad and he could take down a lot of the more powerful villains. With All Might gone the number 1 is Endeavor who while he tried his best after the recent revelations that have come out about him and Hawkes their society would turn on them pretty easily

That would have been much more heroic in a sense, but him slowly withering away is more interesting and dramatic in my opinion. aditya suryawanshi Yes, Horikoshi made MHA too friendly. It makes sense that it would be considering it’s about high school, but it’s also action and this action is not interesting. Nothing ever happened that made me feel like a character I liked was in danger. A bit with All Might, since the shounen anime protagonists’ sensei’s usually end up dead early on/halfway through, but I wasn’t really a fan of him anyways. Letting him live was kinda surprising, but I didn’t really like it. He’s just a teacher now and a support for Deku, also a good target for the villians. I guess what was done to him was not bad, but I think the big mistake here is definitely letting All for One out early on. It felt like s2 was just building up the characters so we would care about them in s3. Well, that didn’t happen. I didn’t feel enough connection to any of them yet, and I still don’t. I wish instead of a wide variety of personalities, we had something other than that. I like Todoroki the most, though tragic backstories are not everything. It makes sense to have one character like that, but not bland everyone else. Bakugou was pretty cool since at the end of s3 we saw his human emotions, but apart from that I don’t care for him. All for One is as Garnt said, and All Might was nothing special to me. Idk, it was just really rushed. The impact was not as it was intended.

      If AM died in his fight against AfO, his character would've become complete and at the same time would've made Endeavor's struggle to fill in AM's shoes as the #1 hero much more impactful and meaningful as he would be constantly chasing after All Might's shadow.

      @@HyakuJuu01300 Their main criticism was "All Might should've died." And it's 100%, no, at least 90% false.
      Having him die there would be such a cliche thing to do, and I don't think it would've added much. You like speaking about Endeavor, but who's more important to All Might? Deku. How would he be able to carry on without All Might, he's the one who inspired him this heavily his whole life. And while I do think All Might WILL die eventually, I don't think that was the time for it. A common complaint people have is "well now hes just sitting around and doing nothing" but in doing this, he's uplifting the students from the sidelines, which will eventually hit harder when something (even if it's not death) happens to him. And I'm pretty sure Horikoshi knows what he's doing with him. Some of his main inspirations (Marvel comics and Naruto for example) have the main character's mentor die in a similar way to what you're suggesting. Again, this is my opinion but if Horikoshi wanted him to die, then he would've done so.

      @shridharbiju7370 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@toongamer2810 I completely disagree with you. All Might's character upto that point was built up as more of a symbol. The symbol for justice and what a hero is supposed to be. But the symbol was crumbling. He was growing weaker because of his injury and it was becoming more and more difficult for him to go on. It would have been much more interesting if that symbol collapsed completely leaving a well defined hole to fill. In fact, that is the kind of hole that forces our characters to grow. Even Midorya would have had to figure out how to move on and become a better hero and he would be forced to step out of All Might's shade. Many people would say that if AM dies it would be the typical mentor death cliche but what people don't realise is that AM character exists as more than just a mentor in MHA universe. AM is the symbol of justice. If he died it would mean a lot to not just our main characters but all the minor characters too. And not only that it brings his character as hero who is willing to sacrifice everything for the people he is trying to protect and it would also symbolises a passing of the torch to the next generation. Of course many of these thing were accomplished with current writing but it was just not as effective. Killing All might would have been the more effective method of storytelling as it would enhanced all the events that took place afterwards. Now all might is just a token character who is completely helpless no matter what happens.

    • @toongamer2810
      @toongamer2810 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@shridharbiju7370 You already know my stance, I disagree. I stand by the reasoning I had before. And Midoriya did step out of All Might's shadow, and is becoming his own independent hero.
      This is Deku's story, if All Might died, the symbol of peace would be gone for everyone, but if Toshinori Yagi died, Deku would be in shambles. Him leaving a "well defined hole to fill" would be pretty weird from a storytelling standpoint, as deku is stated to become the greatest hero, not the symbol of peace. So he probably goes down a different path, while still being a hero. Like a vigilante respected by everyone He still did sacrifice everything. His whole hero career is over, not every character needs to die in order to "sacrifice everything." You can explain it in any way you'd like, "enhanced storytelling," "effective method" it doesn't change my stance. It wouldn't have made much of a difference, and I think it's better as Deku, while moving forward on his own, is still happy to be around All Might. Seeing him devastated and dissapointed at the "I AM NOT HERE" sign on the statue is really powerful.
      And you clearly aren't reading the manga, if you think he's just some "useless token character no matter what happens." In fact, it's kinda dumb to say that anyway, "no matter what happens."

    I think it's better that All Might didn't die in that fight and here's my reasoning as to why:
    Killing All Might at the end of the fight is basically what everyone expected, we all expected All Might to fight All For One, they punch each other, All Might makes one ultimate move and beats All For One and dies a heroic death and everyone cries and the symbol of peace and justice is killed on live tv.
    That's what we all expected and we all were just sitting around waiting for that one fight to happen.
    But now that All Might is still alive but that means he still is gonna die, its been foreshadowed the whole series that he will eventually die. But now we don't have the generic battle death we all expected, we know who could kill All Might (If you read the manga you know who I'm talking about) but it could also still just be All For One but this time it'll be two rivals long past their prime battling it out but this time the hero will not win cause he has no powers to defend himself with.
    Letting All MIght win changes the viewers way of thinking from "Yeah he's gonna fight All For One and Die" to "Yeah he's gonna die but how, who's gonna kill him? ". Doing it like this adds this building of dread of the inevitable and now that All Might has time to really bond with Izuku his eventual death will be just that more saddening.

    • @siragon756
      @siragon756 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Also, we get to experience a whole new facet of his character
      He was the symbol of peace, that pillar who supported basically the whole society in japan by himself but now that he's gone, all of it is crumbling down, bit by bit. We saw that when Endeavor asked him about the symbol of peace. We saw that during Endeavor's fight against the Highend Nomu.
      And during all this time, All Might couldn't do a thing. Just watch, eaten alive by the idea that all this is basically his fault for helping to create a society so reliant on him and that he doesn't have the capacity to rectify it somehow. For someone whose whole life was his job, that must be terrible to experience.

    • @donti338
      @donti338 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@siragon756 Exactly, if written well All Might could be written as a character that wants to do good but ultimately created a much weaker society by making them rely too heavily on the actions of one person who will eventually be gone and replaced by someone else. It kinda reminds me of Lex Luthor where he believes that superheroes will eventually make humanity weaker because we will be too dependant on the heroes to save us.
      True that way of thinking wouldn't work well since more than half of the world population has some sort of powers but it still makes sense at a glance.

Try putting momo up against the current tomuram, or hell, even beginning of the series tomura, he absolutetely stomps either way. If the girls were given stronger or more versatile abilities, they could have been used more. It's shown Horikoshi can write female characters, with Toga and Uraraka, it's just he doesn't know how to properly use and expand upon Uraraka.

      @@EmericMAMBOLE What are you talking about? These "in between fight" flashback nonsense is what ruined the whole Overhaul Arc.
      Todoroki's flashbacks were limited and were put in nice places and intervals. And also most of his back story was given before the fight with Izuku. But this was probably the only time flashbacks were used properly in the manga/anime.
      Mha suffers terribly from its cliche anime tropes. Nearly all the characters in mha are boring and also the story seems repetitive with the endless training arcs. I hope that the LoV arc saves the anime because Season 5 is TERRIBLE and also season 3 and 4 were very underwhelming.
      There are just WAY better shonen out there now with Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. Mha is slowly going into irrelevance due to lack of inspired storytelling.
      I have high hopes from the upcoming arc of mha. That might save this sinking ship. If not...... then unfortunately Mha is going to be forgotten
      And also most flashbacks of Mha are in between fights. Look at season 4. Every fight had a stupid flashback and they were terrible as well.

    On Gentle Criminal's defense, What the show want you to realize is that they've become villains mostly because of their situation. Goes the same way with Jin/Twice. Gentle Criminal failed to become a hero because he was mediocre. People/most of us, specially us irl can relate to them because part of us growing up is the realization that we are bad at some things and we just learn to give it up be it dreams or something else.
    Gentle was the embodiment of that.
    The people from the yakuza gang, La Brava and Twice were social outcasts, they "protected" the people that took them in despite of their circumstances. Twice, even knowing the League of Villains are "bad", accepted him and became a part of "something"
    Gentle taught Deku that it is not only the "innocent" people that are needed saving, but the "villains" who are in a very bad position, that have seen light in a place that most of us would consider "bad".
    I think Garnt forgot what he said about it awhile ago but it is a "Drama" with quirks altho it shows itself as the reverse.
    also this is prolly me being biased coz i read it in the manga first, it "did hit different" when I was reading it.
    also, same thing happened with Joaquin Phoenix's Joker.

      Avoiding cliches doesn’t mean it will serve the story well. Cliches are only bad when used for no reason. There would have been a good reason to have All Might die to hit the emotional impact of literally the ENTIRE setting, because then people have to contend with a world without All Might. The entire hero society has gotten frail because it relied on All Might, and now he’s gone, and now they have to deal with that. Wouldn’t that be cool? But by keeping him alive, the story tries to achieve the same impact, except not really as powerful (because he’s not literally gone), and also All Might serves zero narrative purpose now. He’s reached the peak of his character arc and now does nothing except scream at everyone else’s character arcs and holds Deku back because Deku literally can’t stop being an All Might copycat.

      people criticize it because All for One was this massively intelligent, varied badass with 87 quadrillion quirks but he was getting his colon cleansed largely because he didn't fully utilize his arsenal. It wound up largely being a generic shonen slugfest and while it was cool visually, from a narrative perspective it was kinda weak.

      - it's never been implied that he has useless Quirks so this isn't valid criticism.

      -Whatever reasons that could be left don't appear to be good enough.
      From a narrative perspective, AFO fought like an idiot because Horikoshi couldn't think of an interesting way to write him. It looks flashy and cool so people who bust nuts to any flashy fights loved it but imo it lacks a lot of substance as a result. It would have been much more satisfying if AFO had these strange, mysterious quirks and he used them in interesting ways, forcing All Might to fight creatively and by extension, show Deku creative ways to use his his Quirk.

    All the flashbacks didn't really bother me that much either.
    Although not entirely the case, they were *kinda* necessary. There were some details left unexplained that couldn't have been told earlier on without making the earlier episodes even more boring, and resulting in people potentially dropping the show before it got good.
    Like you guys have stated before, I don't think MHA is the second coming of Christ or anything, but I don't think it deserves all the hate it gets either.

    What Horikoshi did here is more interesting. All for One did kill All Might, but he didnt kill Toshinori Yagi.
    During the first three seasons they almost only show off "All Might" but never really his human self.
    Had All Might died defeating All for One. He would've been a martyr, an eternal hero. By him living he becomes a physical representation of the fact the Symbol of Peace is dead. And the much more human side of him can finally be explored.

It sent the message of we'll kill ourselves if it's necessary to break your society down.
    That and you're also forgetting that Dekus entire journey has been one of growing so he can continue to fight another day, so he can continue to be a hero to others is different ways. What kind of example would All Might be setting for Deku if he did exactly what Deku grew out of?

I also feel as though AFO hesitated because of the fact his the original user of OFA was his brother. It would sort of be like ending his brother's legacy.

      @@cassialee8317 The main problem with pivotal characters dying is that in the "Hero's Journey" the character going through it (In this case Bakugo and Deku) usually has such a mentor figure dying (it's either that or the parents die, but every One for All user has the tragic backstory of previous users dying built in). In a sense, he does die, that's his last showing as an active hero, his secret becomes unraveled and now you have a situation where a "secret identity of an incredibly important hero" is revealed. All Might is, through the fight, moving from one story arc, into the next.
      Also, again, you're forgetting that anything less than the complete defeat of the villain would have blown away the pillar that All Might was, his importance was far greater than just one person, if anything he wanted this pillar to crumble under his own terms, that's the whole reason why he was building up a secret protege and a classroom full of people he could influence directly.

      @@bluejay4214 I can't speak for just shonen specifically but in fiction in general yes ( obi wan Ken obi, yoda, uncle Ben, Dumbledore, Gandalf, crepsly from cirque du freak, mufasa, among others.) Also the mentor death is not always literal like in all nights case it's the death of what he represents. Like in dead poets society Robin Williams character gets fired from the job he loves, which is a kind of death. But to get a better understanding of the mentor trope or tropes in general you should look up trope talk in TH-cam. The lady knows way more than I do and can explain it better and it's more entertaining. As for shounen in particular it might not be as prevalent but I dont read enough shounen to give you a proper answer.

      I mean that's well and good, but people want things to defy tropes when relying on them becomes a narrative crutch. Defying tropes FOR THE SAKE OF defying tropes is equally as stupid as just using the trope. At the end of the day what people actually want is good storytelling and in some cases that happens to fall in line with existing tropes and other times those tropes are just lazy writing shorthand , the latter is what people abhor but not the use of tropes altogether. The arguments made on the podcast for All Might dying are solid (given his narrative significance and the way the story had been plotted around him). Plus, given the release schedule of manga, I don't think it's unreasonable to speculate that Horikoshi just might not have been confident in killing off a beloved major character so he compromised by "killing him" narratively which strikes me as weaker than just committing to killing All Might or committing to keep him alive. As it stands, even if there is some brutal death later on, it likely won't have the narrative significance of the symbol of peace dying when it looks like people need him the most (because when he dies later assumedly endeavor will have a better handle on things and at least all might will have been out of the pro hero game for a bit). Maybe all might's death will always mean alot to deku and bakugou but what's being said is that Horikoshi missed a chance to have that death be shocking and impactful to EVERYONE (especially considering that up until that point every character is defined by their relationship with all might and his ideals).

      I'm caught up with the manga and it gets waaaayyy better, but then it makes MHA one of those shows that only gets good 5 seasons in.

    2:11 the fight against the purpose built super monster, designed to absorb punches, so the hero has the galaxy brain notion to PUNCH IT REALLY REALLY HARD!? ROFL
    What an amazing climax, what sheer brilliance, bravo, encore.

    It's just a shounen. Like the way shounen action hero works, that formula is quite similar so it's not hard to see overlaps between shows, so I just don't read into it much or take it seriously anymore.
    I personally am not against flashbacks. They can be interesting but when they just exist for existing purposes and don't advance the story progressively, it's kinda annoying.

      Coheteos I respectfully disagree, if it wanted to be a cliche AM would’ve died in kamino and endeavor would’ve went out in a blaze of glory (pun intended) instead we get the endeavor agency arc where we dive into family trauma and abuse, MVA an arc dedicated to just the villains and progressing their characters, the tournament arc where the MC would come out on top loses in the second round, if anything it subverts cliches. The whole war arc being a good example, all MHA does is subvert, shoot the MC isn’t considered an underdog and is looked as a threat by the rivaled class, so it being just cliches is wrong

      Levi Samom I’m pretty annoyed at Bakugo. Deku seems to be very tolerative on it as well and I kind of hated that their is no drawbacks on it. He just full on bully.
