    There was an annoucement a few weeks back. Apparently Mappa considers Chainsaw Man an "underwhelming success". In other words, it did less well than they expected it but it returned it's entire investment. Since it's pretty much a passion project, there will definitely be a season 2.

    To answer the title:
    No, it was not a flop. The CEO of MAPPA has confirmed it was a financial success. However, he went on to say it did not perform as well as they had expected. MAPPA was obviously hoping for it to reach the same popularity as JJK, but it failed to do so.
    That does not mean we're not getting a second season. It made money, and more importantly, the series is 100% funded by MAPPA. There is a thing called sunk cost. MAPPA has invested a lot into the series so far, and even if it didn't make as big of a profit as they'd hoped, it wouldn't make financial sense to drop the IP entirely. Instead, they'll likely make changes to the direction/style in season 2 in an effort to address the complaints and boost popularity.

    • @FidelCattto
      @FidelCattto ปีที่แล้ว +144

      The thing about sunk costs is they're gone you cannot get them back and any decision moving forward is completely separate from the previous expenditure. If it is not worth spending the extra money to continue the series then it doesn't matter how much they spent previously

      They could've covered the bomb devil and international assassination arc too in the later half, which i think could boost the popularity of anime quite significantly, as the first half (and that's season 1 btw) is nothing compared to the insanity of later arcs.
      Ps.- Although the 12 ep length is also somehow understandable and a sweet spot for them, as the arcs in csm are pretty quick and short to adapt.... and if they would adapt 24 eps, then they won't have much content left in part 1 to adapt for another season (unless they use the strategy what ufotable did with demon slayer).

Anticipation builds, you feel like you're waiting for something great on a specific day, a reward after a shitty work day or something, something positive, and you KNOW will give you some joy. You feel more involved with the series emotionally and mentally, it is a much healthier model to follow than "release everything on day 1"

    • @johndinner4418
      @johndinner4418 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I agree that there's a good feeling, but I disagree it's ultimately better. It's down to preference, if your series was going to make an impact on you due to its quality, it doesn't matter if you watched it weekly or all together, in fact if anything it's more likely it's better to watch it all together so you can catch all the details easier and not forget things. A weekly watch may indeed enhance an otherwise boring show, but that ultimately means the show may just be a little boring that you have to space it out to not feel fatigued. That's fine, but it ultimately is not an indication of a show's quality more than it is how it's written and if it's written for weekly views or not. Which, the shows that fit that criteria the most, are non sequential shows that you don't need to watch every episode technically. Like Pokemon and Power Rangers. To clarify, I'm not saying one way is better than the other in terms of general enjoyment, I'm speaking purely on series that will impact you deeply, rather than how you'd rather space out your viewings.
      Some comments mention Jojo, but it's quite honestly a terrible example, because not only is jojo pretty close to being written as a weekly show already, of which most short season shonen are not, jojo part 6 was just really badly paced in general.

      The manga fans loved the over the top-ness of the manga. Extremely fast pace and over the top facial expressions. The vividness shown on the book covers.
      The anime director hated it and removed all of those aspects and created a show that all the scenes look gray and depressing. Everyone speaks too calmly. And the director doesn’t know how to interpret the scenes in the manga. For example, in the anime where denji and power ambushed kishibe, denji stupidly waited kishibe breaking all the spears before attacking. But in the manga, denji attacked Kishibe at the same time. The manga fans got pissed at these little flaws. When the devil hunters attacked the building to fight the sword man, the anime showed Kobeni before entering the building so the anime ruined the scene where kobeni saved aki which was suppose to be a surprise. These little changes for no reason were criticized by the manga fandom. And the future devil was suppose to be screaming like crazy while he was just humming quietly in the anime.

      I think this was the biggest mistake the people behind the scenes made - I was 6 episodes in as an anime only, and nothing crazy really happened. I was so impressed by the animation, art style and direction that i picked up the manga and read it in a day and I knew right there that it's not going to meet the insane hype it's getting for just 12 episodes. The pacing is so fast after the katana devil arc, the story gets more depth, world gets way bigger and characters get more fleshed out and insane shit happens (have to say the art style in the manga is so gorgeous, i read the coloured edition and it was so good), if they just covered the next 2 (even 1 and a half arcs in the next 12 episodes), it would have easily gotten success on par with JJK.

It obviously wouldn't have the same mass appeal as JJK, they're just too different, but I felt like EVERYONE was watching it, which makes me so sad to see it was only considered a "moderate success", the manga is one of my favorites and the last thing I want to see is a season 2 with considerable budget cuts (season 2 will need that budget lol).

      No, this was a frequent misinfo. The BR sales posted were only from one store chain, but not MAPPA’s own online shop which had the same BRs but with added bonus goodies for no extra cost. As virtually all anime BR buyers in Japan are collectors at heart, this is where they were going to buy it. The sales from MAPPA’s site were never posted, so no we do not have actual numbers on the BR sales. No comment on the Japanese fanbase’s views on the anime, but I raise an eyebrow considering the most frequent complaint I heard from them was disliking the VAs purely because most weren’t well known, which is just a ridiculous view towards acting quality.

      BR sales have been shite in general even for the most popular, beloved shows out there. People don't buy physical media like that for such a high price tag if they don't include some exclusive goodies that make it worthwhile for fans and collectors. Even in Japan, most would rather buy other official merch and just stream their favourite shows/movies. The anime committees need to finally fecking realise that we are in 2023 and this has been the growing trend for several years now, even without covid.

Demon Slayer’s success was like Avengers Endgame level of success, using it for comparison to determine success of ANY other show is totally unfair. He also points out BR sales are becoming less relevant, streaming and international licensing is where the money is. Christ, MAPPA likely got a buttload of cash before the first episode even aired by how much Crunchyroll must have thrown at them for the streaming rights. Especially as this was a rare instance of an anime being hyped up FAR before its release, even Demon Slayer didn’t have anywhere close to that much pre-hype.

    Chainsaw Man was really divisive between manga and anime fans. Anime only fans in Japan thought it was pretty good, and manga fans did not like the adaptation. It was very similar in the west as well, but more positive with anime only fans loving it, and western manga fans being split down the middle with some loving it and others thinking it’s a mediocre adaptation.
    Are you guys aren’t aware of the divisiveness of the adaptation?

    • @Valanway
      @Valanway ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Insanely divisive, to be honest, especially with all the director(s) stuff. It's like a diet version of the Berserk adaption problem. Similar situation with it being 3D, too, which just doesn't capture the feel and style of the source material. I personally side with the anime adaption being pretty shit and losing all tone, vibes and "nuance" compared to the manga (and it adding its own flair and "nuance" to try and make it seem more deep and introspective didn't help and just made it seem like they wanted to make something else)

    I do agree with Connor that weekly shows are better. With how busy life is getting I don't have time to sit down for 5 hours in a day or 2 and finish watching something. However I can take out 20-30 minutes to watch an episode. This also helps in making each episode feel more important because you remember each one distinctively as you're not watching everything at once. It also works out if there are 3 or 4 shows I'm watching, becuase I have 7 days to catch up and I can take out 30 minutes each day to watch a specific one.

They might be invested enough to stick around at this point, but i could see some pushback.

CSM was different type of show because we as first time having encounter with it is very weird to say the least. Half time we just wondering what the fuck is going on and characters are so alien and unexplainable. And I liked a lot because of it.

    CSM failed in japan more because of cultural differences and apparently japanese fans really despiced the anime adaptation. Let me throw some bulletpoints in order to add some context to the anime's failure:
    - The adaptation is less messy than the manga and has too many quiet calm scenes.
    - The director felt very inspired by Tarantino and japanese fans don't like that direction.
    - Characters like Himeno and Kobeni were hated specially the first by Aki fangirls specially because although she wasa mess, Aki felt something for her too.
    - One if not the most important was casting Tomori Kusunoki as Makima, fans claimed her voice wasn't what the wanted for the character and that her was still an amateur in the VA industry
    I still believe the anime has a chance but only if the focus on the western market because the japanese asked for a whole new adaptation or to at least fire the current director.

Currently watching Sopranos when I visit my parents and there is something satisfying watching a series one episode at a time, when the episode end at the end of a story break. I know its down to personal prefrence but i like the 24 min episode format more than the 1+ hour long episodes.
    The 24 min episode are a lot more time effient for me especially as i have gotten older and have less and less time in the day to spend on shows. If i have a busy day and have a small bit of free time in the middle a 24 min episode is a perfect break, If i have some extra time i can just watch more episodes. With 12 episode seasons they at most take about 3-4 hours to watch completely
    The 1+ Hour Plus shows on the other hand are a lot harder for me to keep my investment espicaly when they are anywhere from 6-10 episodes. with the exception of some weekends It's already hard to find time in the day where i have more than an hour to spend on a single thing outside of school or work. But needing to do that for 10 consecutive episodes for a total of 6-10+ hours and needing to do that for multiple shows makes it pretty difficult to keep up with them.

    And with Oshi No Ko, the hype after episode 1 was so huge, but I knew it would fall off afterwards because there was no way for them to sustain that level of interest with 22 minute episodes week after week. It’s still good, but it hasn’t even come close to being as interesting as the debut was. A strange strategy for that one

    Why Chainsaw Man didn't live up to expectations: Regardless of how hard animation went there was no single fight from s1 that's as good as any random fight in Jujutsu kaisen which a lot of people were going to compare it to. Just as Jjk is always being compared to Demon slayer
    That is, not the action-packed series most would think or the name suggests. Most series with similar titles are straight-up hype
    Also, put in mind Mappa didn't adapt the most awaited arcs from the manga which are supposed to be the series turning point
    Don't agree not being family friendly is a reason. There are lots of big horror movies and shows out there and the manga already had a massive audience. Just an anime not being generally well-received thing
    VERY NOTICEABLE CGI RUINING EVERY GOOD MOMENT PLAYS BIG ROLE 👀
    PERSONALLY I DISLIKE THE CGI, NOWHERE AS GOOD LOOKING AS THE DRAGONBALL SUPER MOVIE
    The hype before the anime came out was unreal. People who had no idea what the show waa about straight up jumped on the bandwagon
    The real reason everyone is afraid to say is... I 100% would have preferred these 2 scenarios:
    1) Pochita never died and stayed as Denji's pet
    2) Denji died instead and Pochita took over
    The main selling point of Chainsaw Man other than transforming into a Chainsaw is Pochita
    Pokémon was what Chainsaw Man was commercialized as
