Tbh, I never knew that was a thing. It actually kind of opens my eyes up to why people like certain animes that I just hated. It's certainly a different way to look at anime, I just don't care to self insert myself

Of course, I can only imagine younger viewers want to self-insert themselves, but I don't think I've ever done that with any anime; games, sure, but they're far more immersive than any anime could be. I watch these shows to be told a griping story about the character and their adventures in their world; who they meet, how they grow, etc. Most times it seems to fall into a mess of tropes, bland characters, and fan service for the sake of it.

      This. Fucking this.
Some of the most obnoxious shows to blow up over the last couple of years are ones that completely forego deeper character writing in favor of making bland, palletable characters you can project onto. If you're not the type of person who wants to project all the time, then these are literally JUST bland "Who the fuck even is this guy" characters.
Good examples are characters like Kirito from Sword Art, Midoriya from MHA or even big ones like Gohan from Dragon Ball.
People should be writing more Gons or Craft Lawrences and less blank slates with nothing going on.

I think it's just the longer you watch anime, the more likely you notice trends and tropes that goes with every type of anime. As a result, many older anime watchers tend to find the newer anime less interesting because they often have done things that older anime have done already in the past.

@@lmaoooo8764 a lot of girls like anime too. 23 is not old at all tho. Joey is like 29 and Garth is in his 30s and still watches it for entertainment. It really depends too HOW you watch these shows. It'll be childish if you self insert or fantasize about characters or get too into it like mega fans, bc that's what kids and teens do.
Teenagers seem like the ones fighting each other because of certain characters which is embarrassing to me.
I think that's questionable and worrisome if you're passed a certain age. But if you want to learn how story works, study animation, pass the time, and learn the crafts of an animator/artist/director/author/storyteller because you want to get into it the craft someday or is currently in it, which of cours means that nothing wrong with watching anime even until you're 70s. There's a certain point when you grow up, where you watch it and criticize it heavily. I'm like that now when it comes to any show and entertainment, and I also animate so I learn from them.

I’m Japanese but Some people in the Japanese anime community have pointed out the same things and expressed their concerns.
The anime industry started prioritizing making quick money, rather than putting a lot of time and money making great shows.
Studios now tend to chose a story that can attract a few, but extremely enthusiastic fans who will drop a lot of money, rather than a great number of people who will just watch the anime.
That’s why we see more anime with with cute girls or ecchi-scenes, and isekai since there will always be an audience for them, and the fans are likely to get physical dvds and buy merchandise.
You can’t blame the studios cuz they don’t earn much Money due to the Seisaku-Inkai(製作委員会) system, where big companies that invested to the production take most of the revenue , and also because of the tax system that really doesn’t go with how the studio earns money.
A Studio’s main source of income is from the sales of merchandise and dvds. This gives the studio a ton of money for a couple months right after the anime aires( but a lot of it will be taken as tax), then will have very little money coming in until they release the next anime.

    • @dmdm597

I don't really think the solution is in high quality shows but in shows that you have fun with, because in the end of the day that's the most important. Today I don't care about the quality of anime, the most important is having fun, I can go from watching a masterpiece to watching trash no problem, and also important is taking breaks once in a while. Anime is not going to disappear so everyone can watch it later. Since I started to focus on the fun I've felt great while watching anime, it was almost like a second awakening haha.

The genius of One Punch Man is how it takes an unrelatable situation and makes it relatable. In real life people deal with feeling with being stuck/underappreciated/bored. Being underpowered is usually how this is narratively done. But in OPM, Saitama gets the exact same predicament from being overpowered. He feels stuck and bored WITH being overpowered AND is also underappreciated. THAT'S why he works, very relatable human struggles despite near opposite circumstances to reality.

Idk if animation company execs are just hunting for the new most bumfkg copypaste walmart SAO in town everytime they look for which series to adapt, there are genuinely manga series whose premises alone are a million times more interesting than the long title clones that get axed a couple months later or get no adaptations for like 10 years and yet for some fkg reason isekais and game world light novels or mangas get an anime adaptation instantaneously almost all the time.

As you get older things tend to seem “uninspired”. But what it really is is that you have so much reference from your years of watching a type of media that you enjoy. So it’s a lot harder to find new experiences for you. But a kid that just found anime doesn’t have any reference so even shows like Baruto are exciting for them. There are only so many story’s to tell and it’s kinda hard to expect brand new idea when so many shows have done variations on every story out there. So your “uninspired” or “boring” anime is probably thousands of kids favorite show because it’s there first experience with that type of story or characters. 😅
Now I’m not saying that shows can’t be bad. I’m just saying that the rose tinted glasses for some of your favorite first shows may be covering up the negatives of them because they were your first experience with those story’s/characters. And that memory of those older shows makes it hard for you to get into newer ones because you’ve already seen the tropes, clichés and characters.

I think the difference now is that we’re older so we can see wear a show cut corners. But as a kid those cut corners didn’t matter because it was still a new experience to them.
I also think it’s really hard for most media nowadays because there are so many shows so many video games so many movies. Honestly how are you supposed to innovate when there’s an oversaturation of stories in the first place. I know that there are people innovating and making new stories. But they’re much more fewer and far between because anime and movies have been around for so long. One of the reasons video games are still able to innovate in so many ways it’s because video games haven’t been around as long and technology has held it back from its full potential. I don't really know if I'd say it's a problem with recent anime in particular. Generic and uninspired anime, much like all forms of generic and uninspired media, has always been a thing, it's just that it's inherently more noticeable in the present. Generic anime is pretty much forgettable by definition after all.
Nobody is going remember or discuss every mid mecha show from the 80s or every by the numbers harem romcom from the early 2000s. People just remember what stood out at the time, making it appear as if the ratio of generic and unique anime has shifted. I imagine the increased availabilty and visibility of anime through the internet along with the increased production also contributes to this perception.

Even during the mecha and moe booms. And while stuff from the other decades may also have their generic-ness they’re generic in a very different way with 90s OVA’s being an edgy type of generic, moe becoming about the gimmicks that made separated them from other cute girls doing cute things etc... but because those aren’t the saturation’s now, those ideas feel like a breath of fresh air.

It's crazy to me that Trash Taste keeps insisting that Mushoku Tensei, a Light Novel series serialized in 2014, only 8 years ago, could somehow possibly be the progenitor or trendsetter of the modern Isekai genre. It certainly set some of the tropes, such as "Truck-kun", but in reality, Mushoku Tensei and the modern Isekai model is built off of decades of Isekai that set and propagated those tropes. Familiar of Zero, Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar, The Ambition of Oda Nabuna, Problem Children are coming from another World Aren't they?, Sword Art Online, Log Horizon, just to name a few of the anime that came YEARS before Mushoku Tensei and solidified nearly all of the tropes that people would falsely attribute to it. Isekai has always been jam packed with power fantasies, harem elements, clueless and easily self-insertable main characters, etcetera; in fact, calling Mushoku Tensei the "Grandfather of Isekai" is a misnomer by default, because Mushoku Tensei didn't just slap those elements in it's story like so many of the Isekai knockoffs nowadays (I'm looking at you, "In another world with my Smartphone"), but rather, subverted those tropes by allowing them to occur more naturally within the story. If Mushoku Tensei had really been the first isekai, or in any way a progenitor of the modern form of the genre, then we likely wouldn't be seeing so many derivative and bland knockoffs, because at the heart of the show, Mushoku Tensei wasn't a trendsetter of Isekai: it was a strict subversion of the lack of worldbuilding in it's predecessors, a trait that has NOT been carried forward in what many call Mushoku Tensei's "Successors". Re:Zero was another such subversion, focused on subverting the lack of flaws in the protagonist, and exploring the true consequences for their actions. Both of them became a benchmark for what could be accomplished with good worldbuilding, pacing, and character development, certainly, but since those traits have not been unanimously carried forward, they can only be considered exceptional outliers, rather than progenitors.

My biggest gripe with isekai in recent years is the game mechanics trope. I'm just SO tired of this boring, done-to-death, lazy approach that in 99% of all cases is only used to let the creators skip the world building. "Oh it's a fantasy RPG style world with RPG mechanics, go knock yourself out, you know how it goes", basically.
The _entire draw_ of the genre used to be getting to explore and experience these creative, interesting new worlds, that's why it's LITERALLY in the genre name...>_> But nowadays all you get is "generic medieval fantasy town A" and "generic elf race forest B".
It's a problem fantasy literature has too, that everyone just copies Tolkien over and over, but at least there's an ATTEMPT there to make things unique and different, while isekai anime just play it as straight and lazy as they can.
Idk who these stories are for. Sure, most of us are gamers, but if I wanna play a game, I'll just do that. If I read a light novel or watch an anime, I wanna see actual characters interact, not the visual equivalent of a relationship bar filling up.

I self-inserted BECAUSE I was in love with the world 🤭 Never as the existing characters though, I never understood blank slate characters tbh, because in my head, that's THEIR story, not mine, why would I project myself onto them?
That's how I got into fanfiction originally, writing my whole class into our most beloved franchises at the time. I'd publish the newest pages every Friday and the whole class would stay behind after lessons ended voluntarily, just to read about themselves (as actually themselves!) in the world of Digimon, Sailor Moon or Harry Potter.
Of course, I eventually outgrew the cringey self-insert fanfic phase, but the sentiment still stands - I usually just want to see a cool story, I don't need to relate to the protagonist. • @tictacmaybeau6707
    @tictacmaybeau6707 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Part of this is just getting older and more familiar with the genre, so you have a far broader pool of experience to draw comparisons with.
But another thing I’ve noticed across all medias is the increasing over saturation of the market.
With each decade producing media of any type has becoming more and more accessible, both in terms of creating, publishing, and reaching a very wide audience. What you get from this is a greater rate of content creation which means more content is being with each year than the year prior. There are likely still as many quality new anime shows being released as before (which to be completely fair, the genre itself wasn’t prone to producing back to back high quality creative hits in quick succession anyways), they’re just hidden underneath the mass amount of lesser quality and average shows being released too.
I work in publishing and see this with books too, and you’ll find the same trends when looking at tv shows, comics, movies, video games, TH-cam videos even… It’s a phenomenon brought about by technological change that I ultimately still see as a plus, despite the trade off in quality from the surface view.
I also think perhaps another thing to be considered is that y’all have had lots of time to watch through all the pre established classics of anime that were around when y’all first began watching, and were also around to watch some classics as they released. It’s survivorship bias. The classics you watched got released alongside a whole slew of other shows that have been lost to memory and time, often because they simply were not up to par with the ones people remember and cherish. In retrospect maybe 10 years out from now, you may be able to reflect on this a little better regarding this specific time-the shows people will love for life that were released now, the ones that got added to the forever growing list of classic anime you must watch.

100% agree with what Connor is saying about Lelouch, the type of person that he is is one that thinks they should be able to plan everything out with some genius strategy and unless they're incredibly experienced, that type of character *should* keep getting hit in the face with random stuff they didn't anticipate. So many shows miss that. I think it can apply to plenty of other types of characters too...I get pretty bored with a show that takes itself seriously and doesn't have the characters facing some kind of personal struggle that stems from their personality or approach or how they interact with the world.
I basically started watching anime in like 2009 and I definitely relate to the sense that after a while (for me it was around 2016 or 2017 maybe) it got way harder to find good new stuff. There were still occasional specific shows I thought were really good, but the difference was that there were a lot of shows made between like, 2006 and 2014 that I could really enjoy even if they were kind of trashy or just dumb fun, and I felt like it got way harder to find that stuff after a certain point. I still don't know if it's because my tastes changed or because what types of show got made kind of changed - both certainly happened.

People forget lelouch had some serious character faults. He wasnt above using people, and sometimes makes mistakes in tactics. He has an emotional breakdown at one point and he even causes some fuck ups later on in the story. Lelouch while smart, wasnt perfect. He was petty and he didnt forsee every event occurring which leads to some people he values, dying. And he learns from his journey and mistakes. He grows as a character. Many writers who try to take all of lelouches best characteristics while ignoring some of his worst, ultimately make a weaker and bland character because a story is usually about a characters journey. When you eliminate the part of the story where a character gets Development, you basically are on a crutch because the rest of the narrative has to make up for that.

I have watched so much anime growing up, to the point where I would finish maybe 200 episodes a week on average. For the past 5 years I have had such a hard time watching anime so that now I watch like maybe 15 episodes a week at most. I resonated so much with the statement "I feel like I can read a synopsis and know 90% of the anime." Meanwhile many shows I did enjoy are either cancelled or on hiatus for years because it doesn't follow the current molds.

I have been doing seasonal grind since about 2013 and i have watched about third of anime from 2000s to 2013. There are a lot of gems in that era (especially 2007 and 2011-2013) but if you look at a single year, you will be pressed to find 5 that are rly worth going back and back. In the last 4 years, we get sometimes a hundred anime in a season, and many of them are bland, but also almost every season, you can find an amazing anime from a genere of your choosing. Lets pick summer 2020. You want some harem/romance trash? You got Kanojo, Okarishimasu. You want your screaming protagonist shounen? You get fire force. How about some isekai power fantasy show? Protagonist of Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha is too OP to die and in first episode kills and revives his enemy every 3 seconds. Deca-dence is a great take on the adventure scifi with very intresting world and intresting characters. If you don't care about new anime you can just sit down and watch 2nd saeson of rezero, third season of oregairu and sao alicization 2nd season.

Its really telling when, in the Asian light novel scene, there's practically an entire genre dedicated very specifically to "I have awakened memories of my past life and realised that the world I'm in is an otome game and I'm the villain what do I do?". Like, not just isekai, but a genre so specific that just by seeing the first two words of the title you can probably predict how the first arc of the entire story will pan out, and also all the tropes that the story will invoke for the foreseeable future

@Zold light/web novels is such a large concept that what you said is incredibly hyperbolic. Imo, it's more accurate to say that while there are a lot of good stories that came out of this scene, they are obscured by the large amount of generic trash that somehow always rises to the top, creating a negative view of the medium as a whole. For example, there is a story that I really enjoyed, written with a lot of emotion and which defies a lot of the tropes it set itself in a very pleasant way, only for the translation to be cancelled for getting low readership just because it shared a similar premise to another novel that forgoes all character development/good storytelling for violent, baseless and downright idiotic revenge fantasies

Yeah, once you read like around 7 or more, all the characters are interchangeable, all the stories feel the same, the only difference is the art style. But everything is the same except for small differences.
This usually means, 5 chapters in, you already know who the endgame romantic pairing is, so you just feel tired reading the story and watching the character dance in the "will they, wont they" charade.
Also, the trope of a character not recognizing their feelings for 40 chapters gets annoying asf,
"Oh my chest hurts watching this girl hang out with my oppa "
"Why do I feel angry when I see her with that man" like come the fuck on, are we supposed to believe fully mature adults dont understand their feelings? These are thoughts middle schoolers and kids would have, most high schoolers irl already know what it feels like to be attracted to someone. Which is why when a story doesnt do that tireless charade it instantly feels 10x better and easier to read through. Characters self aware of their own feelings and how others see them are so incredibly rare but are a treat to read their stories because that usually takes smarter writing to tackle a romance story where characters are more emotionally mature, because you cant drag it out 100 chapters because characters keep misunderstanding eachother or it takes them 80 chapters to recognize that blushing every 30 seconds around your crush is love and then spend 30 chapters to confess. Also manga dont really make the 2nd male lead or female lead a believable obstacle and if they're not, give us another reason to have them in the story. Maybe go the oreigairu route and make us catch feels because we are forced to watch a character we get invested in learn how to deal with heart break and rejection in a natural way, I couldnt bring myself to watch the 3rd season when it came out because it made me sad.

11:35 I have seen this so many times in the "were gruesome and mean" animes, within 2-3 episodes (or as long as it takes to clear the intro-sequence) they tend to become as standard as it can get with all the usual tropes and character-responses shortly after. Goblin slayer, shield hero being good examples, sure they reference darker elements here and there but any sense of true setting malevolence is either sidelined or downplayed the moment the shock-clicks are received.
SAO gets stick for many of it's tropey aspects but it does things than most never even consider, not as well as it could be done but "they done tried their best" an actual exclusive relationship develops and even gets some time to mature (tho i'm with the abridged in terms of the reason it STAYS exclusive), the grand plan of the "bad-guys" generally comes to light at a sensible point of time for rational thinkers without viewer levels of external information, each game/setting is used well(-enough) as the story backdrop rather than as the entire focus. sure enough it's jarring at times but it's not an isekai, it's a world with top-line VR so the real world implications SHOULD have impact on the "gamey/RP" aspects, hell it manages on occasion to finish off story aspects that the matrix utterly failed on (i.e. how to finish a dual-world storyline without making the MC magical in all the worlds they exist in.

Each one of his crewmates aspire to become the best in their respective fields, which I admire. My hero is a little generic in its goal but has some truly tearjerking scenes in the manga and it clearly isn't just about Deku becoming the best, unlike Black Clover. At one point in the manga, we get to hear dialogue from Ochaco. And she says this. "This is the story of how I became image number one hero. This is the story of how we all became the number one hero". About half way through, the striybstops being about Deku and starts being about UA and the looming threat of AFO and Tomura, with OFA and its users at the center, obviously including Deku. Naruto, black clover and one piece are different, but also the same.
I watched so many of them that i can summarize everyone in a single plot:
Apparently random child with dead or unknown parents lives a normal/low tier style of life, one day discovers or gains an immense power, follow years of training to master this power, aided by friends and teachers found during their trip. There is usually a friend or childhood friend with innate skills, that gets gelous of their friend's sudden awakening, so they become enemies, but they are still friends. There is always a tournament of some kind, maybe more than one, just to show the powers of the MC compared to other characters and to advance the plot (the MC has to join because he'll get something important to him). The MC will fight enemies just a bit stronger than him every time, and if the anime is long enough this gets just absurd (dragonball i'm looking at you).
Sometime in the story the MC finds out that his unknown parents weren't just common folks, but they themselves had powerful skills/powers.
I mean i can continue and add details, but just this could be the summary of one piece, naruto, black clover, bleach, dragonball, harry potter, in a way blue exorcist(even though we know the parents from the beginning), hunter x hunter, owari no seraph, attack on titan (but it is missing the tournament xD, and the parents were alive and present), fairy tail

It's not just anime, but all of media that's being oversaturated with whatever execs think will be big. Overall creators aren't in as much control as they were in previous decades, and I hope the decline of sales forces those in control to give up and let artist be in the lead again.

I feel one thing that's an issue as well is that when you grow up, you gain more awareness of the concept of "demographic target". The more you watch anime, the more you realize "this anime wasn't made for me", and then you have to choose between abandoning/ignoring and find other ways to enjoy the one in question.

We need more 4th Dimensional chess-type-plays in anime. It will at least tell people the writer had to really try. We shouldn't go back to the days of when people were only important if your power level is so big. Can your character physically fight Goku? Because that seems like one of the most important questions, nowadays.
That, or we need more of whatever Jojo and Baki are on.

i think the reason why people like
smart over fast fights is because a lot of anime have really fast fights sometimes you can't even tell what the fuck is going on so when a anime explains better what's happening each fight it becomes more enjoyable, most people that watch the ufc have some kind of understanding of martial arts if they didn't they probably wouldn't understand
but still anime isn't only fighting you also have to think about other things too like the lore, characters, and motifs etc...
and this is a opinion from me who watched a shit ton of action movies with my dad when i was younger and still prefer having a story over pure action

The history channel Vikings show did languages quite nicely. It was primarily in English but in scenes where the English, Francs or Vikings were in the same scene they would speak alternate languages which helped a lot with immersion that they don't actually understand each other, and characters that did speak the alternate languages spoke freely/broken.

They mention that all anime feels disposable where its made to be consumed. Anime is meant to be entertainment. It is meant to be consumed. Not everything you watch on TV needs to be some deep show with some commentary on society or something like that. Sometimes all you want to watch is trash. I think that's fine.

Starting out on anime early on gives u a gigantic pool of content to choose from, and u can easily spot so many good gems from the many recommendation lists when it comes to every genre of anime. But once u start getting into the grind to watch seasonal anime, you'll almost always feel like anime is becoming more and more generic which is absolutely understandable. There's just so much bad and mediocre shows released every season nowadays that you'll feel overwhelmed by the number of throwaway shows every season instead of being able to spot the clear best shows of the year. I've been burned out on anime for awhile now since watching seasonals too much has made me feel desensitized towards anime, not that I hate anime, but there's just so many shows that were released many years ago that I haven't watched that are still on my watchlist that I wanna watch that I feel tired just thinking about them due to the habit of watching shows weekly. If u had never started watching anime weekly and only watched shows that people recommended from any time period, u would never think that anime was generic because the only shows you're watching are the handpicked ones from people who've seen every anime and know the good ones, so you're only exposed to the good ones. The reason people think that there were more good and unique anime in the past is because they weren't around to watch anime seasonally during that time period (quantity released back then was also less compared to now). Watch any season of anime from the 90s or 2000s and you'd easily see the same thing, many mediocre or trash shows and among them, the 2 or 3 good ones that stood out and are still remembered by people to this day.
