    It would make a great gift. Nicely done. Great idea using the router to lower the center piece. I would have never thought of that. So I learned something.

    Just been rewatching all of your videos and this chess board project is my favorite. LOVE how it turned out and all the work you put into this. Time to make another board for the other chess pieces!

    That's an art piece. I like how you show the true process on design vs. Reality. Having to adjust box height and all the realistic problems wood workers face, that most people edit out to make it look like it was straight forward.

  • @AliDymock
    @AliDymock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like how you think out your problems like how to take the height down on that middle section with the router. Not sure I would have thought of that. Good work and great to watch.

    Hola Keith,I have just watched the making of the box for the chess set again,and I can't remember if a made a comment,so I will make one anyway,you did a first rate job making the box has you did making the board & chessmen,all in all a top class job,it is obvious to see that you are getting more skilled with each project,obviously the result of forward planning ,and I'm gladiator to see it,has always take care,and nd stay well,

    I Really enjoyed watching your 3 part series of videos on your chess board and pieces. I Like chess a lot, no master by any means, but was already watching videos by people making chess boards so that's how I ended up here. When I started watching the first video you did, I knew I'd be staying for all 3. It's a great job you did! I don't know if you have kids, but if you do, that chess set could make a special gift to them.. start a new activity for all of you to learn and do together. I am teaching my daughters how to play. You mentioned the board being time consuming to build and maybe not being able to sell it for what it's worth.. but it could be a priceless gift someday! Anyway, great job and it was fun to watch.

    With all that you use your table saw for, I would recommend a "Flat Kerf" blade. Using one it makes a huge difference in the amount of clean up for those slots and rabbits.

    Rags You seem like you would actually enjoy chess, it is a game of skill and patience. Just like you I am not a board game guy or a game guy in general but I am glad I learned how to play this game. At any rate great job on this awesome project, I discovered your channel because your mid century modern furniture rebuilds and I enjoy watching people create timeless pieces.

    Love the chessboard! Great problem solving along the way! I like the stamp. I might have to do this myself as I can't afford a proper branding iron.

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you! there are plenty of custom ink stamp sites around and they're relatively inexpensive. I'd like a branding iron some day but the ink works ok (as long as you let it try a few seconds before stamping otherwise the ink runs!)

    Hi Keith,just watched all 3 of your chess set vidios,it was has always good viewing,and the finished article was very well made,I'm sure there are a lot of dedicated chess players out there that would willingly pay you a good and fare price for it,and its better to sell than keeping it for a decorative ornament,that will need to be dusted on a regular basis,well thats my view anyway,take care and stay healthy and happy.

    Very nice solution to the central partition height problem. Never thought of the router as the answer. BTW you 'could' just learn to play chess, it doesn't have to be as highbrow as they make out, although I prefer backgammon.

    I like following your channel, you do quality work and you're honest about everything. I watched your recent video of the round plywood table, and at the end of the video saw you mention your Etsy account. I saw this chess set offered for sale for 200 BP I think, then I followed the link to your Etsy page and saw the chess set had been sold. Congratulations, and I'm not surprised, it's fantastic work! I think because you aren't yet dependent on woodworking to make a living, you could have asked a much higher price for the chess set because you wouldn't be in a hurry to sell it. And I think it definitely WOULD have sold for higher, maybe even 300 or so BP. Like you said, you can't really put a price on something that took so much time to produce, and it IS one of a kind. But anyway hope you can make some good extra cash doing what you love, cheers!

  • @bbreeuwer4577

    Wonderful project!
    I personally would use some felt inside the box to make it look nicer.
    (and sounds better when moving the pieces)
    Btw, about selling stuff.
    I rarely count for the hours I put into something, especially if it was just an hobby project.
    At least the price to cover the materials plus something extra.
    Also depends what people think it's worth.

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you! Yes that's always how I've viewed it as a hobby, but I'd really like to make it a job as well as a hobby (a jobby!) hence why I've started thinking more about charging etc.

    • @bbreeuwer4577
      @bbreeuwer4577 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I would start easy. First see if you can get enough interest and costumers.
      On the other hand, you don't wanna start to low, otherwise the big jump is gonna be a bit strange.
      Also, keep in mind that if you start professionally you have to think how you can work more efficient.
      So sometimes what I do, is that I don't count the times I 'screw up'.
      I just see that as an investment in learning at that moment (similar as putting time in advertisement or building up knowledge etc)

  • @donnarondeau454
    @donnarondeau454 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    good job as always.
    u could have put some felt inside the box that would also help keep the playing pieces from moving.
    watching from the U.S.A.
    I'm a subscriber keep up the good work & keep the videos coming.

    Do you ever sell this keith?

  • @coalitionofrob436
    @coalitionofrob436 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Easy, If you like it keep it. If your indifferent to it do a giveaway. If you want to sell things you make on the channel, remember that *theoretically* TH-cam remunerates you for your labour so that does not form a cost of the production of the piece. Sorry, I'm a Business Analyst so I see the world like this. The flip side is that if you were upcycling to make ends meet, you do need to get a return on your labour. Thats a hard Market to survive in because there are many talented hobbyists selling products at component cost. If your still awake after Management Accounting 101, I hope it gives you food for thought.

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice! Please clamp those sacrificial rails you ran the router on, though... You gave me the heebie-geebies regarding the safety of the piece you were making AND more importantly your personal safety... I also would have gone with tung oil not teak oil below my varnish but very nice job. :-)

    • @RagnBoneBrown
      @RagnBoneBrown  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @AtomicReverend
      @AtomicReverend 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lee Helm it's the same in the USA, I find it strange that people would rather buy something 4 or 5 times instead of buying something quality from the States, Europe or Japan.
      I am getting close to 40 now and I am replacing all my tools with quality stuff and actually make a conscious effort to read where something is made and that includes even household goods.
      Piss on communist China crap. I will not support them.
