I do not believe she was “ evil” but she used incredibly poor judgement. I believe she was sincerely convinced the young man in question was brilliant and was using their form of facilitated written communication . It was highly accepted system used at that time, for people whom could not articulate their thoughts, ideas and feelings, in many teaching institutions for a while. She was a respected professor , Her own mother was well known as an innovative teacher for people with handicap’s.and this was a long term relationship she had with the young man , as well as having a friendship, his brother and mother. She was seriously misguided by her beliefs and possibly further persuaded by her growing emotional feelings for the young man.. And she maybe became besotted by her feelings for the young man. Magical thinking , in her mind d, was at play here! She wanted to “ save” the young man and be his everything. She is perhaps psychologically unwell and STILL needs treatment. But again, I do not think she is “ evil”. 15:26

As someone who is living with cerebral palsy, albeit in a fairly mild form, I find what this woman did to be horrific. People who are genuinely vulnerable need to be protected from people like this. At the same time, I hope that people don't automatically assume that everyone with CP is a potential victim who is incapable of deciding what he/she wants. I know people with cerebral palsy who are lawyers for example, while I have earned a pair of degrees in history and social work. I'm also very capable of telling someone to stop doing something that I don't want them to do. The point is that cases like this need to be judged on an individual level.

While I agree that it would be ableist to assume based on appearances that a person lacks competence, there are no assumptions being made here. His intellectual disability is well documented. And most importantly, his inability to care for himself or understand language does not decrease his value or his personhood. He is a worthy human being regardless and I doubt the people who call this situation “ableist” can see that.

I watched this documentary a few days ago, and watching Anna was very disturbing. She has such high levels of education, but it's clear there's something deeply mentally wrong with her. The part that struck me the most was how overjoyed she was to describe in great detail how and where she was intimate with the victim to his mother. She genuinely enjoys talking about what she did to him. She smiles the entire time. Even during her trail and during sentencing she smiled, disturbing. I'm glad that she views people with disabilities as no different than anyone else, but what she did was predatory. Had nothing to do about caring for him. She saw the opportunity and took full advantage of it. And for that she should have never been released from prison.

I felt profoundly sad for Derrick and others like him that don’t get the chance to live out their lives like everyone else. So glad he has a wonderful brother and mother that truly love him. Evil has no skin color. Equally, evil has no gender. Stop playing the Victim Card! People like you are part of "the problem". Yet, there is a grain of truth in what you say. As Old Adams and Old Eves, all of us are inclined to be tribal and, in that state of mind, tend to become hostile, disdainful, or indifferent toward the "other tribes.". The Black Tribe is just as capable of being "evil" as the White Tribe.
As for Anna, she's a Godless (morally self-directed) Atheist. Her Godless (morally self-directed) thoughts turned into Godless (self serving, self indulgent) feelings, which turned into Godless (moralless and self-serving) actions. The trajectory is predictable. Individually and collectively. Collective Godlessness leads to inhumane Marxism. This ideology might first go through "gentle" Socialism, but, trust this truth, it eventually leads to Marxist dominated Communism.
As for the individual Atheists who resist evil, when enough of them gather into Marxism, the good and decent Atheists, who did not indulge thoughts and feelings that misuse and abuse others, who tesist evil, they too shall be hunted down and canceled, silenced, fined, imprisoned, or executed. By Godless inhumane Marxism.
We must never forget the abuses of Religionists, but, let's also remember that inhumane Marxists murders more of their own than even their enemies. Mao and Stalin, both Godless Atheists, killed between them over 100 million of their own citizens! THEIR. OWN. CITIZENS.
Our Creator has a plan for humankind, and He have us, each, aprox 100 years and, collectively, 6000 years to figure things out. Our time is actually up. 2029 - 2033, God returns, to restore law and order, justice and mercy, and prosperity of body, soul and spirit.
While I appreciate the work of good and decent psychology professionals who examine the human soul (psyche means soul) and can be quote helpful to others, still, I think if I'm going to place my soul in someone's care, I'd make it, first, my Creator Savior and, second, flawed fallible and naturally self-serving mortal humans. The second has some merit, yes, but, ultimately, permanent lasting healing (not just behavior modification) comes from the Bible God, Jesus Christ.
May you all be blessed with prosperity... Body, Soul and Spirit. May you all meet Jesus and be completely healed from self interest and the fear and pain that so often assaults us as we try to make sense of the world around us. I once knew nothing but tyranny and bullying from childhood onward. Learning about the man Jesus led me to wonder why He was called God. In time, as I searched for truth (in many wrong places, not unlike how I also looked for love in all the wrong places), Jesus introduced Himself to me. Imagine my astonishment. Today, Jesus commands me... with my permission. And, truthfully, He'd not have it any other way ❤
Many thanks to Todd Grande for tremendous insight into this horrible "hellish" situation. May all involved meet Jesus Christ and be comforted to know that, in spite of "Hell on Earth" increasing, Jesus returns soon. He will, ultimately, settle judgment upon those who went Godlessly their own way.

Thank you so much for speaking out against FC. I'm on the spectrum and am consistently told that I am a "traitor" to the community because ABA helped me a lot, and I don't believe that it is abusive (even though there can be abusive ABA therapists, just like there can be abusive doctors or abusive teachers).
Many of these people who have bullied me support facilitated communication, which I find to be incredibly ironic. ABA gave me the ability to communicate and advocate for myself and has scientific backing. The "evidence" against the therapy is often incredibly biased (e.g., sampling a bunch of people from a facebook group who hate ABA without even knowing what it is, and then claiming that 80% of people who go through ABA get PTSD from it).
I'm genuinely tired of me and my family being accused of supporting child abuse, when FC has so many cases of abuse that no one wants to talk about. Recently, a family member of mine worked to overturn a bill that would allow FC in elementary schools. The FC "advocates" spun it to claim that the opposing side was "silencing" autistic children and denying them communication.
Whether it's ABA, speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc...there are so many better ways to teach an autistic person how to communicate. And for what it's worth, one of the main proponents of FC (Dr. Bernard Rimland) became a vehement opponent of the practice when he realized there was no evidence behind it. That should tell you a lot about the validity of FC.

Some opponents believe it is akin to “conversion therapy”, which I find to be an incredibly homophobic comparison. ABA focuses on reducing harmful behaviors (e.g., hitting, self injurious behavior, eloping, etc.) and uses positive reinforcement. She also learned to read and write in braille, to type, and to speak. She was the real deal; a brilliant mind that simply required special techniques to educate. The problem is that every zealot who bought into FC thought that they were the next coming of Ann Sullivan.

  • @matthewcrome
    @matthewcrome 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

This case absolutely breaks my heart and is absolutely disgusting in every way imaginable. She is no better than a baby rapist, and I'm not using that term lightly. I am on the spectrum and have (very mild) cerebral palsy myself and have worked as an RBT with autistic children as well as a DSP (direct support professional; basically someone who helps severely intellectually and/or physically disabled people with daily living tasks) / summer camp counselor for people with moderate-profound intellectual disabilities. I can never dream of myself or anyone I know doing something as horrible as this to such a vulnerable person. We literally go through tons of Mandated Reporter training for situations like this (granted, the abuse is not always by caretakers but sometimes by family/other close people, but caretakers are unfortunately one of the most common groups of abusers), and are legally bound to report it if we suspect any sort of abuse. Yet it still happens all of the time and people are completely blind to it. It absolutely turns my stomach.
In regard to her assertion that her victim was "actually intelligent" behind his physical impairments, this does actually happen to people with CP sometimes. Cerebral palsy is primarily a motor disability (unlike, say, Down syndrome, which in its "full" form always involves some level of cognitive impairment), although 30-50% of people with it do have some form of IDD as well. However, this was clearly not the case for him. People with CP, no matter how profound their level of physical disability, who have normal IQs are able to communicate their intelligence. (No, not through facilitated communication as she claims. FC is a long-debunked pseudoscience (which has unfortunately made a resurgence, especially through S2C and RPM) that has led to countless horrible outcomes, including many cases of rape similar to this one, as well as false allegations of childhood sexual abuse and even a manslaughter case of a mother who killed her profoundly autistic son because he "communicated" he "wanted to die" through FC.) AAC (augmentative/alternative communication), which is distinct from FC, is often used in the case of people with physical/language disabilities, even in most of those who are severely intellectually disabled. In the case of people with CP who have normal intelligence, at the very least they can move their eyes (and most people with CP are less severely impacted than that), and there are eye-gaze speech-generating devices for that. I personally know a guy with CP who can only really move some of his facial musclesand his eyes and he has an eye-gaze device, which he clearly uses on his own without assistance, and he has normal intelligence. But again, not in this case. If he clearly had a very low IQ even through using alternative communication methods, then there's nothing else that could explain that. Furthermore, even if he did have a normal IQ and was able to consent, there would still be a *huge* power differential based on the fact that a) she was his caretaker and b) because of his physical disability, if she did anything to him that he didn't want, he would have no way of saying "no" or resisting, and it would be very hard for him to later report it.
And the fact that she just got a slap on the wrist tells you everything you need to know about our justice system. She did not commit "third degree sexual contact" (that would be maybe groping or otherwise inappropriately touching someone, which is still sexual assault and wrong of course but not as bad), she committed first-degree RAPE. Sex offenders in general are not taken seriously, but female sex offenders especially because so many people still believe the incredibly sexist idea that men want sex all of the time and women never want sex, so therefore women can never rape, especially not a boy or a man (even if said boy/man is chronologically or intellectually under the age of consent). She deserves to be in prison for life and treated like any other serious sex offender, especially considering that she will inevitably rape again if given the chance, because that is 99% of the time what happens with sex offenders.
I can only hope that her victim and his family can recover the best they can. I can't imagine the level of PTSD that comes with this kind of crime. Especially since the victim in question can't even comprehend what love or sex is, but he can definitely comprehend when he has been violated/that something done to him was wrong. If I were a family member or another close caretaker, I would absolutely be devastated and feel absolutely betrayed by her actions and want her head on a pike. In fact I already do and I'm not even close to him or anyone who knows him.

intelligence is by definition a social construct, as dependent on the common ideology in a society of what intelligence is, tests are constructed to measure it. She might be all the proof you need, do you think she's highly intelligent? She might have an IQ that was a lot higher than yours, chances are. What is the consequence regarding the value of IQ tests then.
