    I've owned guitars from the 1950s and I own brand new ones. No rule either way, old ones are not necessarily better and some new ones are fantastic. I like the character and history of an old instrument, but if they're not well maintained and set up they can be awful to play, and the pickups could have gone weak. With new ones I find quality control can be erratic so some are really good and some need repairs straight out the box. Play whatever it is, if it works for you and you fly on it, it's for you - that simple

  • @h1de

    No vintage for me. I'm not overpaying for an old guitar. Don't care about the "history" or romanticism of an old instrument. These days you can get some really good guitars for affordable prices that are reliable for live and recording sessions. I'll take a good set up, intonation and tuning retention any day over an old Gibson that has to be retuned every minute.

    • @TonysMusicChannel
      @TonysMusicChannel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kudos!
      That's how I feel... Practicality trumps Legacy. I admire and respect a vintage instrument due to it's significance in history... But it doesn't mean it's better. Guitar making isn't rocket science and it's not a lost art. If anything, modern builders are learning from old mistakes.

    Good to hear about your recoveries from injuries. I had a volar fracture on my left hand index finger and it was paralyzed for a year. I continued to play, even doing a few gigs with only 3 fingers by simplifying and adapting. A year later, after extensive rehabilitation exercises, I was able to use all four fingers again and it seemed it made me actually use all four fingers more extensively and might have been an asset to my playing ability. I still have to watch the video to see what you think, but my immediate instinct on that question is "it depends what you do with them".
    My own style of playing guitar but also... any other instrument, draws heavily on industrial rock and metal for influence so I'm very much of the opinion that as long as your creativity is up to the task there's no such thing as a bad sound.

    I'm not just a guitarist of 4 decades, and learned some recording engineering back in the 90's, but was also a woodworker for 3 decades. I'm no luthier, but I can easily attest to well seasoned woods having a richer tone. You can literally hear this so easily by just knocking on two planks of wood (of the same species and size obviously) where one is from a more recently felled tree, and the other plank was aged for a good number of years. These are just simple facts that anyone can test for themselves. The only hard part is finding a well-seasoned plank. But as always, feel free to fact check me.

    I'm of the mindset that every brand/year possesses its "diamonds in the rough" and often times its pure happenstance. The ego is often a influencerr of perception. When you own an instrument that sounds great, plays well and has a vintage lore to stroke the ego...... C"est Magnifique!

    My personal top 3 guitarists.
    Jeff Beck. The one and only, who was and is the inspiration and influence of so many
    Al DI Meola. This man can shred better than 99% of the metal crowd, picking every note !
    Mike Oldfield. A distinctive sound, a distinctive style, classical music written with modern instruments, or modern music written from a classical mindset.
    As far as old guitars go, most of the ‘classic’ old guitars were hand made, even the pickups were hand wound to a certain extent.
    As time went in the machines to ‘help’ became more precise, and more to the point, more ‘repeatable’.
    The human was taken out of the process, which is good, and bad.
    Modern guitars are very much physical clones , the necks are all about as identical as a machine can make, the bodies are all so perfectly within allowable spec, the pickups are pumped out of a machine and you can choose any one off the line and it will sound like any other from the same line.
    When they were hand made, there were variations, some necks were a fraction thicker, or flatter, or wider. No 2 pickups would sound quite the same, close, but not identical. Some old guitars sound and feel amazing, some don’t. Some feel great and sound like a bag of sh!t, some feel horrible, but sound like a dream.
    The same variation applies to electronics. Plugins enable you to get the identical processing on every channel, multiple instances of cloned processing.
    The old hardware though … This was and is a problem to the people making these software emulations. You want to recreate a Pultec EQ, but which one ?
    Abbey road Pultec is different from Sunset Sounds one, which is different from ….. , well you get the picture.

    Over many years as a luthier I have found that every guitar is a compromise based around the limited choices of wood type, hardware selection and configuration (design). Some old guitars nail their expected sound. Some new guitars do too. In the end a combination of your technique, the guitar and the sonic environment (amp, pedals, live rig or studio stuff) gives the final tone for better or worse. There is no right choice, just right context.

  • @jackbrowning511
    @jackbrowning511 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have to say, that I’ve played guitars that were cheap in value, and yet, the guitar brought something to the table and the tone was just different enough to sound cool in original songs, but, owning guitars that are name brand, went both ways, and having a good tech work on them, brought the beauty out of them. I feel if it feels good and sounds good to your ear, embrace the instrument. ✌️❤️😎

    Some of my faves are Wes Montgomery and Allan Holdsworth. I think there are good and not so good guitars in any time period. Older guitars tend to be more hand-made. They still can not make violins as good as Stradovarius and other older makers and luthiers are still not sure why exactly that is. Maybe the varnish ? maybe the wood? Lots of good guitars to choose from these days.

    • @aylbdrmadison1051
      @aylbdrmadison1051 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The makers of the Stradovarius had access to trees that no longer exist in such abundance. And although every little facet of an instrument has an effect on it's sound, the varnish is one of the least important. Whether or not the instrument has a finish can make a noticeable difference, but to hear the slightest difference between types of varnish is likely far beyond the capability of the human ear. The wood however does make a massive difference, just ask luthiers why they have always been so particular about the materials they use.
      I don't where these luthiers who claim they don't understand the basics of instrument building are, but I have never met even one single luthier who didn't fully understand why a Stratovarius is so special. Not indeed that some of them sound better than others, and some violins built by other makers could be argued as to sounding even better.
      The channel _TwoSetViolin_ recently did a challenge to see if they could tell witch violin was witch by just listening. Worth checking out to get a better idea of this phenomena.

    I think it totally depends on each individual guitar. You can get great and crap in equal amounts from various ages. My oldest guitar is unplayable do to a collapsed truss rod. It's a Norman acoustic from the early mid 70s. On the other hand, my newer guitars play great and sound wonderful. But then just before the truss rod went wonky, my Norman was amazing! To this day I'm not sure what happened to it.

    You beat me to it with your Tim Pierce quote. I am always seeking out guitar tones from 50s and 60s country records. I can get most of that from the pickups. Fortunately there are some really great pickup makers in the PNW you can work with to get great "vintage" tone out new pickups, on fairly affordable guitars.

    I put my right hand out of action back in the '80s, after I cut the tendon in my thumb, and whole forearm ended up in a cast that really restricted the movement of my right hand, its flexibility, and ability to play guitar well. If I tried, it left white plaster dust all over the guitar body. It was hellishly frustrating, and such was the anguish it caused for the 6 weeks it was on, that I vowed, never to go there again. So, when a small lump, later developed on my thumb, post cast removal, I refused to go back to the hospital, in case they re-cast it. That lump was with me for years, but since it caused no further problems, I lived with it. Finally, in 2020, the non-dissolvable suture that had been left in my thumb, broke the surface of the skin, and I was able to pull it free. Funny, how important this guitar playing is, eh?

    I think the reason vintage guitars are more desirable is due to the availability of quality construction materials. This doesn’t mean that ALL vintage guitars sound better, but in general a well built vintage guitar will outshine a modern guitar purely because of that fact.
    Sure, there are some modern guitars that can match a quality vintage one, but it’s becoming harder to achieve as good wood etc. becomes increasingly difficult to source.
    Collectors definitely over-inflate vintage guitar prices for mostly nostalgic reasons, but there’s endless respected professional “players” that choose, and testify to their vintage guitars solely for the tone they produce. Of course, a true vintage guitar sound would only appeal to someone who plays the genres characteristic of the “vintage” era. 🤷🏻‍♂️😬

    3 letters PRS. Mine is the best e gtr that I have ever owned. I also have a newer Gibson J45 acoustic that sounds other worldly awesome. That being said, if I was Elon Musk, I would buy vintage, then buy Twitter and flush it down the toilet of history and make the world a better place.

    Vintage guitars are not really better. The reason people think that is because back then, the good guitars were taken care of, while the bad ones were tossed away. So when people compare new and old guitars, they compare the best vintage guitars against a mix of both good and bad new guitars, leaving them thinking that older guitars were better. If you took a well built new guitar and went back in time, im sure they would say it was just as good or maybe even better than what they had back then.

    I deal in old electric guitars and some of them sound awful. 70s Les Pauls which are the oldest sort of affordable les pauls are terrible junk. The frets are not suitable for modern playing and the pickups are not all that. Mid 80s ish they start to get better and 90s ones are usually very good but many have a gap between the fret end and binding that the high E gets stuck in. It was a manufacturing fault that can be fixed with baking soda and superglue but is hassle. By 2000s they got really good and apart from a couple of bad years have been very nice ever since.

    In order to open this can of worms. Define “better” then we have a goal to aspire to.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What is better is the question, if we define it then there is no discussion! What do you think is better about a 50 year old guitar vs a brand new guitar? Anything?

  • @MobileDecay
    @MobileDecay 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, of course. Magically because they're old with deteriorating electronics they sound better. Any guitarist thinks that is a complete bonehead.

    I'm not a fan of vintage electric guitars. They sound great on the old records, but those were recorded when they were still new guitars.
    Electric components don't get better with age.
    With acoustical instruments it's different. Wood does get better with age. And some of the woods that were used don't exist anymore.
    But I'm a player, not a collector. And a guitar that is too expansive to be treated as a guitar is rather useless to me.

    Stepping in for a band member undoubtedly begins with a lot of baggage, what happened with the previous player? Chemistry and psychological energy are going to be more critical than hitting all the notes. It’s like replacing a pet to the fans. And then…. You try to be creative and move forward with the group; odds are some of the fans may be stuck in a different decade. If it was easy anyone could do it 😂

    The human brain is absolutely decepting.
    Witnesses in crimes are not always reliable = did the suspect have white, yellow or black hat? Or even hat at all?
    You will get different answers the more time goes.
    In the same way, I have learned to never assume guitar tones without having actual A/B/C comparison recordings I can listen to instantly from each other.
    In the past I would swap necks (rosewood/maple/whatever) and I heard lots of difference because I spent time expecting something...
    Then I started to RECORD before and after, and the sound in the recordings was IDENTICAL.
    Swapping pickups gives audiable differences tho.
    Then comes somebody "but you need to hear it in the room, not recording" ..... That is so tiresome.

    How can a solid wood guitar get better with age rubbish only acoustic guitars get better with age

    • @paulcowart3174
      @paulcowart3174 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Supposedly the theory is the wood gets dryer with age and becomes a little more resonate Why people are using baked or roasted woods Same "theory" so the hype is

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m not sure anyone would make that argument for a solid body. Hollow body, semi hollow and full blown acoustic guitars benefit most from wood aging.

    • @paulcowart3174
      @paulcowart3174 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do know an older guitar that's been played will have a different feel than a brand new one I have a 65 and 72 and a CS and MiM that were brand new and there is a difference Not saying that's the woods fault More of a broken in feel and maybe electronics or pick-ups a bit warmer A guitar that was used tends to sound better than one that wasn't
