Washing soda works better than baking soda. Adding vinegar to either creates a closer to neutral pH solution with a weaker basic or acid level, which is less effective at breaking down charred protein and grease. A GOOD steel wire brush is inexpensive, cleans the corners better than any pad, and is easily cleaned, and if dried with WD40, doesn't "shed" and is reusable many times. "Chemical" spray oven cleaners are a very strong basic solution that contain foaming components only to make it clear to the person where they have been applied.

Many brushes shed wires so I’ve avoided them. If there was an exceptionally high quality one I’d be open to trying it.

Combining vinegar with baking soda gives you sodium acetate. Not particularly impressive as a cleaning agent. Both vinegar and baking soda are more useful by themselves. I just crank up the grill and essentially burn all the detritus to ash. At that point, it just flakes off with little to no effort at all.

A high burn will incinerate all the detritus but you will still need to give it a good soak and scrub if you don’t want black flakes on your food. You are right that the baking soda mixture isn’t powerful but it seems sufficient.
How do you prefer baking soda alone? As a paste with water? Post the vinegar bath?

@@HelpAtMyHome Depending on what I'm cleaning, I'll often clean with vinegar and then neutralize its acidity with a baking soda solution before a final wipe down or reseasoning. I've also just cleaned with baking soda when I want a mild abrasive. Yes, a good soak and scrub does wonders especially if you do it as hot as you can manage.
