Arnie, another tip is once you have all your ashes in the Amazon box you can tape it up and leave it on the front porch, it usually disappears within 3 days, or put the taped box visible in the seat of the unlocked vehicle or bed of truck with tailgate down and go shop at the mall and someone will usually take that trash right off your hands.

I usually box them back up and give em to kids for christmas, not sure why but they love it.

As mentioned in one other comment thread, save the larger briquettes and add them to your chimney for the next cook. I layer the bottom of the chimney with new briquettes, then load the used ones up. No sense in wasting good charcoal just because it's a bit smaller than a full-sized briquette. The smaller ones also heat up quicker!
Great point. Those were awfully large and nearly full-use briquettes he tossed in the trash box.
If they have old grease the flavor or your new meat is going to get ruined. Wouldn’t recommend it (used to do it).

got a 30 year old kettle and a 25 year old gas grill from weber. you can replace all the parts and the paint on the kettle is still in excellent shape with no rust! lots of option for replacement grills for this kettle's also>
I’m right there with you. I’ve been on a Primo Oval XL since 2014. Buy once, cry once. It’s great and all, like a tank, but I do miss the simplicity of a Weber Kettle. A Weber also grills and smokes very well. (it is just going to chew through a lot more charcoal than my Primo) I think the Weber Kettle needs to be everyone’s first grill after they try a propane grill and see its limitations. I was concerned that he was using an onion to clean the grill, but it turned out he was using a Weber grill brush first which is great. I have never had a single stray bristle when using this type of grill brush. My most recent brush is from Nexgrill as it was convenient at the time. The problem is that the plastic handle is two-piece and broke almost instantly. I will be going back to the Weber grill brush. (the long one) Do not underestimate your basic Weber Kettle. I would go for a model with the ash catcher though.
Who's overlooking Weber?
Having a spritzer or spray bottle with oil in it (i like avocado) is nice as well, I always give a quick spritz (don't need a lot!) of oil to my Weber grates after I hit it with the brush, to keep stuff from sticking (and/or to make the small bit of stuff that does stick easy to remove). I also use one of those natural bristle brushes to clean, to avoid the possibility of metal shards. I find they work just as well and are often cheaper to buy. And definitely the onion thing, love to rub the grates with an onion right before putting meat on, and toss the onion on the coals. Magic.
I heat the grate so it cooks any residue brittle. Then I use a bamboo brush or coconut husk to brush it down for absolutely no metal. The coconut husk is just a big piece of husk. You smash it a little on the wide side and use the skinny side as a handle. In Hoisan Cantonese it's slang name is top knot like the hair style.
I just use a pumice stone (often called grill stones online) to easily take off the crud from the previous cook on my stainless grates on weber. I just do a quick few passes while the chimney is lighting up and then spray with the hose to get the stone dust off. The pumic stones are the most effective way I've ever used to clean my grates.
Hey Arnie, did you know all those old charcoal chunks are still good. Just put them back into your starter chimmney and relight them...still good for a long time and saves you money. :)
Hi Arnie, thank you for pointing out removing bits of metal from the brush on the grate. Lots of people forget that can happen, and occasionally someone gets a piece of metal in their stomach/intestines and that has to be misery!
There are other brushes than metal lol that's the old way. Grill smart

Aloha Arnie..i do not use a metal brush as those small metal brushes can come loose on the grille grate
and possibly get into the meat that you put on the grate... i only use a plastic brush... i do like using aluminum foil
to clean the grate... i love my weber kettle

Arnie, I want to let you know, I just smoke my first full packer brisket. Took about twelve hours. I am still eating BBQ brisket sandwiches two weeks later. I love your love of cooking and eating. Being single I didnt want to try brisket. Now I have no fear of it going to waste. Thanks for motivating me to cook a Big Meat Brisket. My sister sent me some Blues hog bbq sauce and it is like jam. Works perfectly with thin sliced fat brisket on a bun with red onions.

I have a Weber kettle and a pellet grill, but I do most of my grilling on my Weber. I think my brisket and prime rib roasts come out better and taste better using briquettes and wood chips together than just pellets from the pellet grill. I also clean my kettle like you're doing before each use.
If you have never tried the snake method on your Kettle, you should give it a try. I find I can hold a long and consistent temperature/smoke. It's my favorite way to smoke on the Kettle now.
I would also point out that lump charcoal is a much better alternative to briquettes.
I like to keep my kettle clean and have started using the grill mats for most things. Once a year I take the whole thing down, pressure wash it, and use a plastic razor blade to scrape out the bottom and lid.

I've taken to reusing my coals, even the little pieces. A $5 piece of perforated sheet aluminum from the home store does the trick. Cut a bit for the chimney. Lay out some over the bottom grate. Plenty of air flow and easy enough to shape to keep the coals to one side if I want some indirect heat. When I want to start a new fire, I can pick all the coals up with the sheet aluminium, give 'em a shake, and pop them right back into the chimney to get lit again. The little coals light a lot faster in the chimney too with no starter fluid, just a wad of paper and a couple stick matches. No fuss, no waste.
I have an older model kettle I bought used probably 15 years ago. It has wooden handels and the three spin vents on the bottom. Its holding up very well except for the wooden handels. I dump out all the ash in my garden then put the kettle on its side for a hose out. I hit the lid also. Probably not a popular method using water. I let it dry out in the sun and usually only do this when I useing it that day. No rust anywhere.
Thanks @ArnieTex. I really liked the onion tip. I can’t stress enough how important it is to keep your grill clean. It is easy to overlook because everyone is so busy these days. Just do it. Your food will taste better and you might avoid a potential grease fire.

Great intro! I bought an aluminum garbage can for my ashes and use a small metal shovel. I wait til the next day to empty the spent coals, but if they are a lil warm still it won't hurt anything
I like to clean the cooking great when it's hot. Like after we eat and I do both sides. I also rube it down with a oil I take it off the heat or turn off the burners to do this. My mom taught me to scoop out the hot charcoal and drop them in a heat proof bucket with water in it. When the coals are out you can reuse them I have a safe place by my compost I put my ash when they are cold
I also use a plastic puddy knife to scrape my grill, then use a paint brush to sweep the ashes through the holes at the bottom. I then wipe everything down inside and out and the bottom grate with soap and water. if I want to do a deep cleaning, I will use oven cleaner to scrub the old grease build up. Once I start the fire and heat up the top grate I scrub it with the wire brush, then follow up with the foil. I also use a paper towel and half an onion to finish cleaning the grate, but I use olive oil on the onion. This also helps from the meat from sticking to the grate. Have you ever tried the Weber grate grill cleaner?
Another way to remove the gunk without damaging or scratching any of the enamel is to use a Steamer with the scotch-Brite attachment, without almost any pressure the steam will melt\dissolve most of the gunk\grease within seconds and the Scotch-Brite helps with any stubborn gunk. You'll be done in half the time or faster using a steamer...
If its extra dirty i use a soaked cotton rag then let the grills heat back up and finish with an onion
Good point on making sure the old coal/ash is a few days old. I did the mistake one time of taking a shop vac to help remove the ash and the hose began to get hot VERY quickly. I then realized the coal was still hot 😥
I would like to add if using all wood charcoal and if you have a garden, take that Ash and mix it with soil as it makes a great fertilizer.
I use crumpled aluminum foil a lot. I usually wet it. It is a softer metal and doesn't scratch most other metals.
Instead of the onion I use vinegar in a spray bottle then cover and let the heat do the rest. Before I toss meat on I throw a little cooking oil on grates
Idk if anyone'l has said this yet, but you can save the ashes and put them in flower beds or around your lawn since it contains phosphorus which is good for plants!

I never clean my grills, even after the Winter season. I just empty the ash and fire up again, then brush the grate with a circular steel (safe) brush once it's hot. Never had an issue.

Great stuff man, I would caution using a wire brush. I have myself use these in the past and if you’re not paying close attention wire can break off and I have been on to a wire. Now pretty much all I use is a ball of aluminum foil and I scrub. It works phenomenal.
I step you forgot bro - Turn that grill over and scrape the bottom side to remove the haning boogers. Also quite a bit of the charcoal chunks you dumped weren't fully burnt. I always use the left overs in my next fire.
While I totally agree with turning the grill over and then cleaning, I wouldn't agree with using leftover charcoal. It can, depending on conditions, introduce really funky smokey flavors that may or may not be good. It just depends. Maybe use them before the food goes on?

I never thought of using foil paper after using the wired grill brush normally I use a brush with heavy duty bristle so I can clean it off the little pieces of metal grate that come off wire grill brush

After a cook I shut all vents to suffocate the charcoal. The next day I remove the old charcoal, bang off the ash and save them for the next cook.
I think it's important to keep it clean because any left over ash and charcoal will retain moisture and lead to corrosion.
when I use the chimney, I put the grill grate on top. This super heats it and I take the grill brush to it at this point. I juse use my mitt to stableize it and move it arounnd
Your comment (at 5:42) about the "metal bristle" from the cleaning brush reminded me of another Safety Rule: Always wear glasses when using the wire brush while cleaning the grill. About 5 years ago I could feel something in my eye....went to the doctor and he found one of those metal bristles imbedded in my eye ball!

I use a soup can lid, holding it with a paper towel so I don't cut myself...... I also use Easy Off Oven cleaner to spray the inside of the weber and also the lid. I spray the inside of the grille and sit the grille in the sun all day... I also put he grille in a plastic bag. after I spray it with Ez off let it sit in the bag in the hot sun.. Evenually I take steal wool and also use soap and water to make the grille look like brand new.

Last weekend for Father’s Day I went to the river but I was in a hurry. I grabbed my drill and a scouring pad attachment with some dishwashing soap and went to town on the grill. My wife laughed because it looked brand new. But I normally take my time and clean it just like you did it.
I usually toss the ashes but keep the bigger used charcoal pieces and add them to my next fire.
I used to clean exactly as you do, but I still had slight stomach upset from the food I cooked next. (Yes, I have a bit of a gut problem.) Nowadays, I place the cooking grill on the concrete driveway after brushing with the grill brush. Then I spray it heavily with Walmart heavy duty ammoniated oven cleaner and then cover it with a clean, heavy trash can liner for about fifteen minutes. My grill brush also gets the ammonia treatment. Next I spray the grill and the brush with a "jet" nozzle on the garden hose, which removes a bit more debris. This method kills the remaining bacteria and prevents fungus in case the Weber sits for a very long time before the next use. (Note: The Walmart oven cleaner is noticeably stronger than the name brands.)

If you work on your own car in the garage, you can keep the ashes around to soak up any oily spills. Works good and it’s free!

I use restaurant style thick grill towels "2 towels sewn together" that I get wet then after the grill is real hot I scrub the grill one last time, instead of using an onion.
You can also make the grill non stick by using a potato the same way you used the onion.

I use a cat litter scoop and a whisk broom. I have a small metal trash can for ashes.

Use the oil. Will prevent the grates from rusting and they’ll last longer.
Rule number 1 in bbq. Keep it clean. I only use vinegar, aluminum foil and soapy water. It's so satisfying to see it all clean at the end.

The large ice scoop works great. I use it for my charcoal.
I always wash my grill grate in the sink after a cook, and I store it inside in a plastic bag. Keeps it from rusting really well. Plus, I use a nylon bristled brush to keep the metal bits off of the grate.
The onion makes a non-stick coating. Its a pretty common technique in korean bbq.

Good tip. I may have missed it, but perhaps you could save some of the waste for compost? If you do not have a garden, then you can donate it? I do not add meat to my compost, because I do not pay enough attention, rotate it enough, or make sure of the temp, but if you are as attentive with your composting as your cooking and cleaning, then you might have success.

Hello Arnie, I was sort of raised that to clean the grill grate, I clean it with water, dish soap and a stainless steel dish scrunchie. Is that not necessary? To grill, we do clean it with the onion, prior to putting any meat on it.

All that unburned charcoal can be reused and NO it doesn't give off foul flavors. Any drippings from previous cooks burns off in minutes once it's relit. No need to throw it away - yes throw the ash away but not those big ole chunks of charcoal. There's still TONS of cook time left in them.

If you get into the habit of doing these steps (especially the grates) after you cook instead of on a cold start you are always going to have a clean grill. People are just usually impatient and want to eat. Meat needs to rest anyway so it's a win-win.

Was hoping you would show what you do to clean the actual inside of the kettle itself. Mine is all gunked up with grease drippings from chicken leg quarters I have grilled. Thinking I will just make up a big bucket of dawn and hot water and try that to see how it does.
