You call that a dirty grill? Looks like it’s cleaned every other cook. A true dirty grill has a grease fire 75% of the time. Makes food cook twice as fast
Don't feel bad, dude. I once spent a summer cleaning grills for a recreation department. On a scale of 0-10 (10 being the worst), yours is about 3. Some of the ones we worked on hadn't been cleaned in years. We actually built a fire pit and threw in the grills to burn off as much of the crud as we could. This incinerated most of the grease and grime. Some could just be wire-brushed down to the bare metal. Others required some additional degreaser, detergent, and carbon solvents. In the end, it all worked. BTW - The reason we didn't just go with chemicals was due to the local ordinances which restricted groundwater pollution, so we had near-zero tolerance for run-off water. Great video.
Is it ok to use degreaser chemicals on the grill grates themselves? I mean, that's where the actual food is cooked. Or will a light rinsing afterwards be enough to remove the toxins?
What’s great with this Napoleon grill is that even after 3 years, the outside looks absolutely brand new. Of course the dirty is suppose to be inside but even like that, the outside really looks great do to what looks like stainless steel high quality casing.
another option for grates is to put them in a heavy duty plastic bag, pur 1 - 2 cups of Lemon Ammonia into the bag, seal it up tightly and leave it overnight or for a day and half and watch the magic happen. It's not the ammonia itself but the FUMES that literally dissolve the grease and baked on foods. I've used this on my gas stove ceramic grates and my wall oven racks and it gets them like new. Of course, there are some burns and such that cannot be removed at this point after all mine are 20+ years old with lots of use so I'm not aiming for perfection. BUT, you'll be amazed what ammonia can do and it's not hazardous to your health....hope this helps.
I use coke to clean my grill grates. I put them in a plastic bin, dump 2 2-liter bottles in and let them soak for a few hours. The grease and gunk just falls right off
This motivated me to go scrub my husbands grill so it’s nice and clean when he gets back from his work trip and we can grill and enjoy the finally nice weather, thank you!
I have the same bbq. I clean mine twice a year. Spring-and then fall. One thing to do is as soon as done cleaning fire it up and let run for 20 mins so all the tubes dry out and you burn off any residual odours.
While this is a way to get it done there are less harsh ways to go about it. An corrosive cleaner is not required, a better bet would be something like simple green which uses enzymes to break down the fats and oils which glue the gunk to the metal. Additionally if you want to get the best mileage out of the exterior of any stainless grill the best thing to do is to clean the exterior with Bar Keepers Friend as soon as you get it and then go over it again once every few years. This removes all the industrial fallout (steel particles from the press and grinding operations) which gets stuck in the passive layer of the stainless and then passivates those gaps from where the offending material is removed. The stuff costs less than $3 in the US so there is no excuse to avoid it. Remember salt tears through stainless via chloride pitting (think about the sauces and marinades you drip), if you have spots at the end of the season that look like surface rust, you can nip the issue fast by just touching up that area with Bar Keepers Friend. Another major point, not all stainless grills are made like the Napoleon, if you have sections which are made of enamel coated steel DO NOT use a putty knife to scrape. If you scrape into the enamel layer you will open a path of oxidation which undermine the nearby enameled areas. You can use a plastic tape knife if you feel like scraping. Happy Grilling.

Oh God!! He cleaned all the rancid, burnt grease that fresh food is being tainted by in the BBQ!!!! Use the chemicals to clean the grill so that the flame is not burning carbonised gunk and giving off tastes. 😡
Instead of spraying chemicals on your grills when in the pladtic tub, fill it with water and some simple dishwasher detergent. Leave it to soak for at least 2 days. More is better. Everything then just wipes off with a damp cloth. Any stubborn spots use something course. I’ve always done this. Its so easy.
Does Napoleon allow to directly wash inside with hose? If so it will be very easy for me but i was afraid to put direct water in it. Is it recommended by Napoleon?
I've got the exact same grill, two years old now. Fricking awesome, it's by far the best I've ever owned. And yep, also a little fanatical about keeping it looking good. 😎
try a small electric pressure washer and Dawn detergent . Also install a cookie sheet and put a little water in it while cooking . It increases moisture while acting as a grease trap ( monitor the level )during cooking.
I would never recommend spraying grill with water. That will cause rust eventually. Only thing you need to do is turn on high for 15-20 min to char any remaining food and grease and scrap off. The only deep clean that’s necessary is to shop vac out the loose ash other than grease tray/pan maintenance. Remember it’s a grill you can spend all this time doing a deep clean and the first cook after will result in grease splatter and ash getting everywhere again. If you want the outside to look good that’s a different story. If you want the inside to look pristine, don’t use it, haha.
I just bought a new house. The bbq had 4” of gunk in the bottom. I’ve put foaming grill cleaner and degreaser on about 10 times, and it is still mostly black. This one is not dirty. Mine is still dirty after working on it for 3 days.

Twice a year I just use a few things: Mild degreaser in a bottle, roll of paper towels, gloves, and a bucket. Wipe down the surface with paper towels, remove all parts, spray those with degreaser let it sit, spray the inside with degreaser and use paper towels to clean, or if really bad use a brush. Put all back together and do a final wipe down then then the grill on low for 10 minutes let the remaining chemicals burn off all done. Not a perfect cleaning but good enough to get rid of flares for a good amount of time
The HG oven/grill/BBQ cleaner is fantastic. Been using it for a while, but you really must wear gloves as it's a strong alkali (not acid) and can cause burns.
I’m using it for years now. Was really carefull at first. Got it on my hands quite a few times now, still nothing luckily. Have to knock it off though 😂

Yes, I used my shop vac. I also used my self cleaning oven to clean the grates and another part of the grill. Before starting, I took my battery out of my igniter. This was a grill that I got off of Craig’s list for free.
Did he rinse those chemicals into his lawn? He mentioned himself how acidic they are. I’d like to clean the inside of my grill but rinsing has always been a concern. How are you guys deal with this?
I heat mine up a little and then power wash it. Takes me 15 minutes and leaves it looking new every time, no need for all those chemicals and a thousand steps. Been doing that for 15+ years with no problem and costs me $0.
I don't use chemicals i on any internal surfaces of my grill. I prefer to treat it like my cast iron pans or wok. I think too much cleaning ruins my "grill hei" (see wok hei). I use nothing but a wire brush and a putty knife on the inside of the cast firebox. However, I always has cheap grills that rusted out before they got too bad. Now that I have a Weber I'm thinking a deep cleaning such as this may be needed at some point.

Protection for your skin is important too, but your eyes are especially endangered !
Could you please also make a video how the clean the Napoleon Phantom? Guess these strong chemicals are not the right stuff to use there…
Have you found any good cleaning guides for the Phantom?
Oven cleaners are base, not acid. Other than that great video, squeaky clean at the end.
Love this video.
Beautiful grill cant wait to buy this
That grill plugs in and has electronics in it - how did you make sure no short would be caused?
What was the cleaner he used
No bubbles, no troubles.
If you want your Stainless Steel to look like factory new, hit it with the Barkeepers Friend.
This is one of the cleanest grills I've ever seen. My grills so dirty it's more smoker than grill.
Wrap the storage area with tin foil in the spots grease drips. It will save you lots of time.
would a shop vac work to clean up all the crud you scraped off? Would love to see a video like this for the Napoleon Phantom series
Yes, I used my shop vac. I also used my self cleaning oven to clean the grates and another part of the grill. Before starting, I took my battery out of my igniter.
This was a grill that I got off of Craig’s list for free.
“Cleaning the cleanest grill I’ve ever seen”
So you can spray water in the grill and it won’t ruin the burners?
Did he rinse those chemicals into his lawn? He mentioned himself how acidic they are. I’d like to clean the inside of my grill but rinsing has always been a concern. How are you guys deal with this?
I heat mine up a little and then power wash it. Takes me 15 minutes and leaves it looking new every time, no need for all those chemicals and a thousand steps. Been doing that for 15+ years with no problem and costs me $0.
What are the names of those cleaning chemicals ?
I don't use chemicals i on any internal surfaces of my grill. I prefer to treat it like my cast iron pans or wok. I think too much cleaning ruins my "grill hei" (see wok hei). I use nothing but a wire brush and a putty knife on the inside of the cast firebox. However, I always has cheap grills that rusted out before they got too bad. Now that I have a Weber I'm thinking a deep cleaning such as this may be needed at some point.
