Its a little late to the game, but this video put me over the edge into getting the HK45 as my first handgun. Even though I had 10+ hours of research on the subject I was anticipating a small amount of buyers remorse. I am thankful to say I have 0, (zero) remorse. Best purchase of my life. Thanks.
Damn straight! I love my SIGs, Glocks and M&P Shield but at the end of the day my P30SK 9mm DA/SA, P2000 LEM are always backup to my SIG 1911 (the only gun I like more than HK, even though my HKs are more durable)
Thank you for mentioning Todd Green’s (RIP) test of the HK45. He was a great guy, I met him about 2 years prior to his passing. I still refer to the data on his web site periodically.
I purchased a used one for $600 and was able to obtain all the original equipment that the postal came with. This is a very good review! Thank you so very much for taking the time to make it. Sincerely Ron
After a long-awaited trial I have finally found and purchased my first hk45. I've been pleasantly surprised coming across your video as you have somehow given my innermost thoughts regarding this pistol a voice even though the two of us have never spoken. Thank you for producing such a high-quality video that was both entertaining and informative.
Your passionate ardor for the HK45 might just be funny but you present facts and thoughtful analysis backing up your opinion. I’m glad you mentioned the possibility of removing the decocker function. The only thing you don’t mention is how freaking big the thing is. Small or even medium sized hands might not love this pistol so much.
Great video. My HK45C has a special place in my gun safe right next to eight of my 1911's of various species, a P2000, and two VP9s. While I've always been a 1911 guy I have to pay homage to the HK45C based on how well I shoot it; the fact (read: preference) that it's not striker-fired; its unparalleled reliability; and its fit, finish, and functional completeness. For example when you rack the slide on this gun, just the mechanical sounds it makes, instills my confidence in it. I also appreciate the way the safety and decocker work to facilitate carrying it cocked and locked, and enable you to rack the slide with the safety on. The HK45C, in my view, stands out among many other outstanding handguns in this category. I wouldn't criticize any of the others in this category...but this one works well for me.
Nothing against the other contenders, but I strongly feel that there is no better , more reliable combat gun, for ANY amount of money, than any of the hammer fired HK’s. I own most of them. My two favorite EDCs are the P30 40 SW, HK45C, and P30SKS. Near perfect as a combat/defense firearm. Just picked up a P30L. 9mm. May have to work that one into the EDC rotation. I’ve never shot a finer gun. I just finished ridding my collection of all striker fired guns.
One reason it’s under appreciated is that the USP45 cultists refuse to acknowledge the HK45’s merits lest it somehow disparage their beloved USP45 which is a fine pistol in its own right.
Awesome video! Very informative... Thank you! I have an HK USP Expert 45 (the only one we can get here in Kaliforniastan) - and after taking it to an IDPA match for the first time, just so loved it that I took it out again... I really need to learn more about the H&K, and want to try out the newer pistols.
Not sure what you mean. I have in usp''s 1-FS, 1-compact 45, 1-compact 45LEM, 2-45 Elites, and an HK 45 bought in 2014 just before the end of the SSE. It's in FDE. Slide was done in fde by Lipsy's to match the frame. Did you stock up on 12 rnd mags during our brief Freedom week? My CC took a hell of a hit then for all my restricted guns.
Is underrated for many reasons; is big, heavy, expensive and holds only 10+1 rounds and others in the same category like the Glock 21 carry 13+1 and the FN 45 15+1 and costs less money.
If I remember or recall the Joint Combat Pistol was supposed to have a 10-round capacity, many company placed their best for the contract. That's why you will see many of them, such as the M&P 45 have a 10-round capacity. The joint combat trial was abandoned but brought us some sweet arms.
Just saw your channel and this is the first video I've ever seen from you. I purchased a HK45 about 8 months ago, and your review is excellent. I could not rush to subscribe fast enough when your "Warning: Your firearm of choice may be criticized" flashed on the screen. Thank you for your honest opinion on firearms and a perfect sense of humor for this type of review! =)
I finally got one of these (it's competing with the FNX-45 as my HDG). Great ergos. It needs a few updates though: 1. Optic cut like VP9OR (sorry but I need optics) 2. Hook the front of the trigger guard like the VP9. I don't use this grip but still some people do. 3. Extended mag option (similar to VP9SK extended mag options)
I first got mine in 1996 after witnessing the testing that the US military put them through. With the hexagonal barrel, the rounds are not as hampered with lands and groves. The muzzle velocity is greater and it is one of the most accurate handguns I own. Stock sights with a rest, I managed a 7" group on the 100 yd range. Amazing. I swear I could see the round lob downrange. I wonder if I can modify it to get that new polymer bushing for recoil although it does have a dual spring that works pretty well
DevilDolphin Ha! The fact that you approved this video means a lot to me. I’ve watched your HKP30L and 45 videos. This one and yours convinced me to get the 45 too. (I already want the P30L.) If your HK45 video is the cake, this is the icing!
This video has earned you another sub! Great work man. Aside from audio quality (really not that bad) this is on par with other reviewers that have been doing this for years with hundreds of thousands of subs.
Excellent vid. I have 3 hks and had 4. I sold the hk 45 compact lem because I couldn’t stand the lem trigger. Just me I guess, but I could never get used to it. Maybe because I’m old and don’t have as much grip strength as I used to. Any way the other 3 aren’t going anywhere except to my son when… My favorite is the hk30 sk. I recently added the gray gun short reset and flat trigger which were significant improvements imho. Not cheap, but worth it. I’m trying to resist getting another 45c, v3, but will probably fail. Time will tell.
I really like HK 45 I got airsoft version of HK45 Tactical and shooting from it is really comfortable, great weight and accurate. I will buy that gun once.
I came to the H&K45 from 1911, so I planned to carry it cocked and locked. I found that it was, for me at least, impossible. So it is surprising to see that you actually committed 100% to it. 1) the rear of the frame is wide, and if I rested my thumb on the safety (as one should), wore no gloves, and shot hot rounds, the frame kicked me in the base knuckle of my thumb so hard that it was actually painful within the first magazine 2) if firing hot rounds one handed and using the safety to apply pressure on the gun, it was quite easy to accidentally decock the gun. Which, in the middle of a string of fire, was very confusing I have since converted to the LEM setup and I could not be happier. It is 95% as shootable as SA and 100% as safe as DA/SA, and no ergonomic issues with the safety/decocker lever. As an added bonus, with LEM it is impossible to forget to decock or make safe the gun before holstering. So make that 101% as safe as DA/SA.
I love my HK 45 ACP tactical FDE! it's really easy to be accurate with this firearm. I use to EDC a S&W 40 shield or a Ruger 1911, 45 ACP, but I am more accurate with the HK over these other firearm platforms. It's too big for IW carry, but I had a shoulder rig made that holds mine w/a laser/light and 3 additional mag. This is now my EDC!
Just wanted to say thank you for making this video. I own several firearms and the HK45 is one of them. I pretty much echo your review as being spot on. If this firearm carried 12 or more rounds and had some minor improvements to the trigger it would basically be the perfect polymer 45 in my opinion and I tried a LOT of polymer 45's at the range before finally making my purchase. Once you actually shoot the firearm you will understand why is it so great.
D Elias just add an extended baseplate to the mags and run it. I have an FNP 45 and the grip is really too long Just to accommodate the extra three rounds
@@apocalypticredix8538 Both when you can afford it! Seriously, the 1911 is great for the range and carry as long as you practice on your draw a lot. the HK 45C can be carried just like a 1911 or you can carry it DA/SA (which I recommend). The recoil management system on the HK45 and 45c is fantastic....I honestly wouldn't rule out the USP which has the biggest guide rod and springs I've seen on a pistol, freakin' amazing.
Can you do a video on your collection of HK's? I have a HK USP 45 and USP 9 and love them both and intend on adding every HK USP model plus all HK45 models to my collection over the next 9-12 months. Thank you for a good video.
Love my HK45 full size. My 2nd HK45 full size. Had to sell my early production 1st one but just picked up a new one. Still a V1 full size and grabbed 2 spare mags on sale for $32 each. Mag prices are the short coming of HK 45 pistols. Normally $50+ per mag. I was surprised to see that HK changed the pistol case up. Originally, the case was a large, black plastic case with no foam inside and came with 1 back strap, 2 mags, and 1 fired shell case from factory. Now, small gray case with foam. No fired shell casing, but still 2 mags. I see no difference to gun itself which is perfect because it is the best, most accurate handgun I ever shot. I mean precise over and over out of the box. The trigger I like though some say theirs is gritty. Neither of mine have/had gritty feeling triggers. The slide release is the best in the business. No one does slide release better. Someone may have issues releasing the mag when shooting if they have real large hands but I have never inadvertently released a mag while shooting. I love my HK45 full size and trust my life with it with no hesitation. Can everyone else say that about their weapon of choice???
I'm happy to report that I purchased my first pistol in April - the HK45. This video, including several by DevilDolphin, were key in my selection process. I paid $719 plus tax. Mine was made in the US tho. I LOVE it. Oh yeah, its name is Stormbreaker. (It's a DA/SA trigger i.e. hammer fired i.e. I am worthy to lift it.) I'm looking to get the P30 as my EDC. It will be called Mjolnir since it's smaller than the 45. lol
@@hangles7279 Nice. It's fun to shoot. If you can, check out Mantis' training system. It's an device that fits on your rail and app system that helps you shoot better. I got the X3. With it, I dry fire practice in the house.
@@laurencea9932 yea I believe I saw that on active self protection, I have a flashlight mounted there and I've practiced a bit at the range.. let me tell you I need more practice! All my shots were hitting bottom left. I think it's from my trigger pull.
@@hangles7279 The Mantis X helps with that. It actually tells you why your shot was off and tells how to correct it right there. Yea. I have a laser/light set up on mine - Vism Gen 3 (Green dot). I take it off to mount the Mantis. I used to slap the trigger and have bad placement. It's already helped me to squeeze and not anticipate the click.
Well...seems I’m back in the market for a HK much sooner than expected. Before I leap back into a HK45, I’d like to check out the HK P30L first. Kinda hard to find in my neck of the woods.
Isaiah Marquez , I have HK45 and it’s a hidden gem(made in USA). The P30L is coming from Germany but they only send out small batches quarterly only. HK USA never knows until 2-3 weeks before. Next batch to arrive is March/April; hope my ffl can get me one.
I don't begrudge someone if they want to use the slide catch as a slide release, especially if it is large and ambi, as in this case, and thus, obviously designed to be used as such. The problem is that slide catches tend to be shaped and sized differently, and located in slightly different spots, which can make cross training between different makes and models difficult. I use the slide because it makes my manual of arms more universal. Regardless of whether I am using a 1911, a Glock, a Beretta, or a SIG, I can always grab the slide and release it in pretty much the same way.
I like the 10+1 capacity after shooting and handling other maker's .45s with higher capacity mags. I would buy a 14 or 15 round mag just to have for WTH why not use. But, for everyday use the flusher fitting mag just suits the gun better IMO. I think HK really got the form spot on for ease of carry, ease of handling, ease of mag changes, ease of holster removal, etc. An extended mag with 15 rounds or more sticking out the mag well would just be handy for range use. But, having 4+ mags and a really good speed loader like some of the quality ratchet styles available for under $20 work extremely well. I use my ratchet speed loader all the time at the range.
I have the original HK USP 45 tactical with the taller sites and treaded barrel for suppressor. Love it, but you have to get custom accessories for it such as holsters due to taller sites.
Nice review. Interesting history to the HK45. I recently acquired a pair of them. US made, but I'm guessing that they are on par with their German made siblings. Biggest caliber guns in my collection. I agree, the grip is excellent. Looking to convert mine to ambi safety. Personally prefer a hammer over a striker too. And no bricks in my arsenal.
Oh, and I tried out the FN FNH.45 and absolutely hated the slide release and found it to be detrimental when hurrying. You know, like if your life depended on being able to fire your weapon in a panic situation during mag changes or clearing a FTE.
I don't remember you talking about the weight, the weight distribution and how it shifts is rather clean once you learn the weapon. Unloaded is another thing in itself since it's top heavy from my perspective.
I bought the HK 45 Compact used from a relative. After owning 3 different 1911s and each of those not liking hollow points very much.......the 1911 forums..... "Polish the ramp". "Use higher quality magazines" Bullshit. A good pistol works from the factory on ALL ammo. And my H-K happily digests shit steel cast Russian ammo, JHP, HP, wadcutters, anything I've used. I had one jam with some steel case that had some rust. It also hits the target. All the time for me, which is what I couldn't do with my first 45, a wide body Llama which I couldn't his the proverbial barn door with. In short I agree with everything in this review.
excellent video my man!!! Couldn't agree more and I could not have said it better.... if they would give it a 12 round count plus one at least and a better trigger it would be unstoppable!
Given the mag capacity limit in Connecticut of 10 rounds, that's basically an endorsement for those of us living here! Also, given the punishment this gun can withstand, kind of looks like the perfect TEOTWAWKI .45...
Yes, it can only hold 10 rounds in the clip but for those of us Washington DC residents, we are not allowed to register a firearm that can possibly hold more than 10 rounds, so I was locked into this pistol.
second favorite handgun of all time . only second to fn fnx. have shot the USP tactical with and without suppressor. that sold me forever. one day I will own both beauties.
H&R 45c Guy here. Truthfully I am a revolver guy who also likes semis .That being said the 45c is my favorite of more than a few. I just shoot it well, and 10 rounds not an issue,I’m from Mass and that is the max you can have. A lot of the guys have Glocks, sorry just can’t shoot them well.
SPOT. ON. Been really looking into this or a 1911 and I'm heavily leaning towards the HK after your review. And this is arguably one of the best reviews I have ever seen. That cheese grate comment is perfect. I shot my buddies and wish I had Gloves. Not a comfy gun to shoot. Also, when are you going to review that AK?
I ALMOST bought one of these the other day but wound up getting a SIG 1911 Scorpion for my duty/carry. I probably would have done the HK45 if I didn't already own two of them and one SIG right now hehe (I had a P220 Carry but it was stolen, hoping it will show up) the HK45 or 45c is #2 on my list of the guns I want next (the next being a P225 P6 I found that I'm gonna put on layaway since it's worth double what they are charging) My HK USP .40 shoots like a dream so I can only imagine how the .45 would feel. My biggest question was the USP V the HK45 in terms of recoil, the HK45c is highly requested among operators. I had two part breakages on my P2000 LEM but it was due to excessive dry-firing on my part (excessive enough it probably would have fucked up most guns, I was being an idiot) HK fixed it and got it back to me in 5 days.
I'm still carrying USP's (full size & compact 45's) because they hold more ammo. That is the sole reason I haven't replaced my USP 45 with a newer model HK45. Well, that and I will never wear either of them out in my lifetime.
Is the ambi (left side) slide release loose and wobbly like on the P2000/P30? Shoot HK pistols naturally and do appreciate them but the janky ambi slide release has had me stick with the USP series. While I realise that may not matter much for most people I am one of those that when something irritates me I can't stop thinking about it. The ambi slide release was janky on the p2000, so why wasn't that fixed moving forward?
TheSteelKnight - you are a fanboy. But you are not pretentious about it. I have a Glock 17 and have wanted a .45. Your video has given me a product other than a 1911 which just has the historical cool factor going for it. Having said that, it is hard to argue with 13 available rounds. Now I have to figure out how to get it by my Chief Financial Officer. Great video.
Compare to the PX4 Storm .45. The Storm is softer shooting, just as accurate, with a better trigger, yet the same size as the HK45 compact. Only weakness is the location of the decocker, but that is still better than the location of the HK mag release. In independent testing, the Storm went over 31,000 rounds before it had a failure, compared to the HK at 25,000 for a spring. All for less cost.
".....which means that this hk pistol is the only one that can actually claim the title 'hand canon'.....but i digress" lol suscribed. great vid man. keep it up.
Major difference? Only major difference functionally is how you take it apart, Decocker is in the rear not part of the safety, and had side panels for the grip. i own both. Both Awesome.

Also to mention the case head support is insane. I have never seen a chamber that supports the case this much
Totally agree. Excellent review. Will soon become the preferred weapon of my people here in America.
"Tactical Tupperware" lmao I'll have to remember that one. Just bought an HK 45 today btw. Can't wait to go to the range and fire it.
It will be called Mjolnir since it's smaller than the 45. lol
I just purchased my first pistol yesterday.. full size hk 45 tactical.. cost me about 900$😂 cannot wait to shoot it
@@hangles7279 Nice.
@@laurencea9932 interesting. I'll consider getting that
Awesome video. Gonna have to get my wife to try out the Hk45 also. Cheers
Word up! Great video (looks to his left HK45 w/light on knightstand).
excellent review keep up the good work made a Believer out of me
Can't believe no one has commented on 7:33. Priceless!
I got rid of my HK45 to finance a Dan Wesson Valor Bobtail. While I love my VBOB, I do miss my HK45. I plan on getting another.
Well...seems I’m back in the market for a HK much sooner than expected. Before I leap back into a HK45, I’d like to check out the HK P30L first. Kinda hard to find in my neck of the woods.
Sooo...after not being able to get my hands on a P30L, I have another HK45. I won’t part with this one. 🤞
This is a great video man. I really enjoyed it
Glad you did. :)
Awesome video! Just wanted to add that the m9 replaced the 1911 in 85 not 90.
Great video! Not one "ummm or aahhh" Great job!
I don't remember you talking about the weight, the weight distribution and how it shifts is rather clean once you learn the weapon. Unloaded is another thing in itself since it's top heavy from my perspective.
1st: Great review. Made a believer out of me! Love HK, I gotta get me one.
yes yes you do ;)
I bought the HK 45 Compact used from a relative.
After owning 3 different 1911s and each of those not liking hollow points very much.......the 1911 forums.....
"Polish the ramp".
"Use higher quality magazines"
Bullshit.
Great video.
You should do a comparison video between the HK45 and the glock 30 or if you have shot the glock 30 how do they compare
excellent video my man!!! Couldn't agree more and I could not have said it better....
if they would give it a 12 round count plus one at least and a better trigger it would be unstoppable!
Its called a USP Tactical ;)
They are beautiful firearms.
Pro tip: get the LEM trigger installed and it will feel even better 😃.
Great review. I subbed. My only other comment is that I like the decock function and think it's a pretty good safety item.
They need bigger factory mags imo, even if they're long. Lots of people need a smaller grip, but can't stomach a smaller mag than a USP.
Great review. Love my HK1911..... I mean HK45! 😅
second favorite handgun of all time . only second to fn fnx. have shot the USP tactical with and without suppressor. that sold me forever. one day I will own both beauties.
A noble goal for sure.
If it came between the hk45 and the USP 45 which one would you choose?
I own both. You can't go wrong with either in the same price range but the HK45 can go further. Mine just reached 15,000 rounds.
I ALMOST bought one of these the other day but wound up getting a SIG 1911 Scorpion for my duty/carry. I probably would have done the HK45 if I didn't already own two of them and one SIG right now hehe (I had a P220 Carry but it was stolen, hoping it will show up) the HK45 or 45c is #2 on my list of the guns I want next (the next being a P225 P6 I found that I'm gonna put on layaway since it's worth double what they are charging)
My HK USP .40 shoots like a dream so I can only imagine how the .45 would feel.
Very good video!
I Reilly like it. I will own one some day. But for now, my sig p220 45 will have to do.
Am I crazy or is the first round in the mag (in the thumbnail) inserted backwards?
Edit: it looks like the following round is also inserted backwards.
It's a joke from an H&K brochure that had a round in backwards and was captioned "no compromise"
Great review I’ve wanted one for years but price is high
".....which means that this hk pistol is the only one that can actually claim the title 'hand canon'.....but i digress"
lol suscribed. great vid man. keep it up.
10/10 review I am also a fan of the HK's
I just got a USP, and damn, I want a Hk45.
I still want an Optics ready VP45😂
strange. I bought my usp compact in 1998 and at that time they offered the competition model, the one you show......
What trigger upgrades are available
What is your take on the Hk45 vs the P30? Other than the obvious caliber difference, is there any other major differences that you know of?
Major difference? Only major difference functionally is how you take it apart, Decocker is in the rear not part of the safety, and had side panels for the grip. i own both. Both Awesome.
Great video! +1 for hammer fired handguns!
Has anyone had issues with the polymer Hammer? It gets -20° here at times and thats my main concern.
Fantastic review. Do you prefer the HK 45 or 45 USP?
Isn't that grip on the Compact version the one the full-size was supposed to get?
How would you compare this to the USP 45? I'm debating on which one to get and love both. Just a hard decision.
Did you ever make up your mind? I'm on the same fence...
usp 45 all the way. 2+ rounds and all business in the look dept
Am I the only one that noticed the rounds put in backwards in the magazine at the 7:34 mark? I assume a joke lol. Cheers.
Vickers and Hackathorn you should be better than that.
It’s a thing of beauty
