Mountebank and Goons are two of the most powerful attacks in Dominion by far. They got rid of them for balancing purposes. Also, Donald X. said cards like those tend to lead to games that are "not fun". The card in the base game that gains a card costing up to 4 is Workshop, by the way. I love everyone at the Dice Tower, and I value their reviews FAR MORE than any other site/channel, and for the most part, these guys know what they're talking about with games in general; however, a review like this should serve as a reminder that some of their reviews tend to come in hot after a game's release and skew towards how it appeals to newer gamers. Some of these new 2E Prosperity cards are much better than they're alluding to in their review. Plus, it's not like they have the time to sit here and rattle off the dozens of cool combos you can now make with cards from other sets (this is a review of just this expansion, so it makes sense they didn't). Based on comments they've made in past videos, they don't really have the time to learn the in-depth strategies of a game right away to point them out in a review. Understandable for sure, but for me, their views on a game are less impactful in cases where they just "don't like a game" initially because they don't play it enough times to dig into that second layer of strategy. Again, nothing wrong with that. It's just a reminder that reviews have to be streamlined, which means some stuff gets missed (perhaps a point in favor of re-reviews? At least when it would be drastically different than the original review).
So now that there’s like 15 expansions with another one coming out next year. Plunder. It would be cool if Tom and Chris could do their top 10 favorite expansions. Yes we all know what’s number 1. But what about the other 9?
I picked this expansion up and after discovering how much better it made Prosperity, I ended up buying all the other update packs. The update pack is an excellent upgrade. Tiara is an excellent card that can lead to impressive buy phases. Collection's +1 victory point for each action card acquired can yield some major points in the right kingdom (i.e. cards that let you gain horses, etc.). Overall, a great update!
I believe they removed the Mountebank for balance reasons. Mountebank is much worse than the Witch. Getting a copper on top of a curse when you're just starting to build an engine is gamebreaking.
Goon's is my favorite prosperity card, but it often forces everyone to buy into goons since it's a strong attack and victory condition. So I can see why they just nerfed it with collection.
I always preferred Dark Ages because you're clawing your way up... and as I'm writing this I just realized that might reflect reality a bit too much. I like it in *games*. 😅
Yeah I agree. I also love dark ages. I have a video called is dark ages the best expansion. On my channel Spencer Breustedt. In the video I talk about the synergies. Yeah prosperity was near the bottom of the barrel and since goons was replaced it’s now literally on the bottom for me. Tom and Chris think it’s the best, but I don’t agree, I’m not a fan of treasure heavy expansions.
For those with the original Prosperity, bear in mind that the upgrade packs are only printed once. So if you don’t get it early, you’ll never have another chance.
Will it be hard to find? You can pretty easily find the upgrade packs for Dominion and Intrigue even today. Are they printing less of these packs than they did for those sets? Edit: I see that the original one got an unexpected reprint due to demand so that's why it can still be found so easily, but dont expect a reprint of the others. Interesting.
great review. Im glad i waited to get into dominion until recently, after a lot of these 2nd editions released. Can the dice tower please review the rest of the 2nd edition expansions?
Collection is one of those cards that is just utterly broken on some boards because as a Treasure you can easily play multiple of them. Like if there are ways to get lots of Actions in a turn like Experiment or Border Village it just goes bonkers with how fast you can get points. It's not quite as broken as Goons was because Goons affected all gains and also could combo with stuff you get in the Action phase, but it's still really strong and it also gives you the extra Buy so you can get more Actions.
If you combine 1st and 2nd Edition Prosperity-which is NOT the intent and for which the game is not balanced-then yeah, I can see there being too many Treasure cards. But if you're just playing Prosperity Second Edition, it has 9 Treasure cards. That's only one more than Prosperity 1E's 8 Treasure cards. It's just that the update pack adds a lot of Treasures because most the the 1st Edition Treasure cards were duds and therefore replaced.
Yeah I agree with you guys, I’m not getting rid of most of my old cards either. And I agree with Chris about goons, if you’re going to play an attack card it might as well have a cool benefit like getting victory tokens.
@@LastFootnote harshly attacks opponents, so what. That’s half of the fun. I absolutely love attack cards even if I’m getting attacked it makes it more challenging. It wouldn’t be any fun if it wasn’t challenging. And in games without attack cards I find too boring anyways. No challenge, nothing to hold me back. So no I’m not just buying it for bonuses I’m also buying it for its attack! And goons just happens to be my most favorite attack card to boot. If you don’t like attack cards, then go play wingspan or Everdell. So your preaching to the choir. Goons only hits once unless you have a reaction that changes the equation. So there’s definitely more aggressive attack cards out there. So playing multiple goons on one turn to get a bunch of victory tokens is a lot fun. Lots of deck building games have attack cards, dale of merchants for instance.
@@Animal_board_gamer At no point did I say Attack cards were bad or that I didn't like them. My point is that ideally you buy an Attack card because you want to attack your opponents, not because it's the best way to build up lots of VP chips. I'd by lots of Goons even if they didn't attack, so having an attack stapled to them isn't great! And now we have Collection, which gets you the same fun of getting a bunch of VP tokens, and if you also want to attack you can pick up a Clerk or five. It's win-win.
@@LastFootnote yeah but goons is way better than collection, you can’t get nearly as many Vp tokens. Plus goons has 2 reasons to love it. Plus I’m not a huge fan of treasure cards. Copper, gold and silver that’s the only treasure cards I need. So goons isn’t great, goons is AWESOME!!! I did play with collection several times, it’s not fun at all. Goons is way more fun.
I’d recommend either hinterlands or intrigue as both expansions don’t really add any new concepts to the game. Seaside adds durations which might not be a good first expansion to start with, but then after at least one of the other 2 you should move on to seaside. Personally the first expansion I bought was hinterlands and it’s one of my favorites too. Another friend of mine bought intrigue, so I never bothered to buy it.
@@Animal_board_gamer awesome. Thanks for the info! I’m not sure I like the idea of expansions that add on additional concepts to games. I’m Carcassonne I like Inns and Cathedrals cause it is just a widening (or expansion) of the base game; but the Traders expansion adds the resource stuff and I don’t conceptually care for it. (Though I haven’t played it.) It’s good to know Hinterlands and Intrigue don’t do that.
@@jacobleonhardt4421 yes and cornucopia and dark ages don’t really change much either. And obviously all the expansions end up having duration cards. Some more than others, renaissance only has 2.
The new editions double down on their key concepts (way more durations in Seaside, way more treasures in Prosperity) and I don't like that - they aren't as good as "standalone" anymore.

less money they would make off of us

Time to do a Cornucopia/Guilds update pack review!
Okay, but is it possible to get the cards they removed?
This is 100% better than OG prosperity. My highest expansion by a mile.

Goons and Talisman are out because DVX decided that "While you have this in play" is bad design. They are good designs otherwise
I love seeing Chris so much lately. He’s got such a soothing voice. Asmr ☺️
