A beautiful book but me and my group are sticking to the original "SURVIVE THIS" edition with all of its additions from over the years. Heck, ended up making a PDF just to coordinate rules, equipment, spells, etc for the group too.
We've been playing in since November 2023. Love the game. The box set has tones of value in it and I cna honestly say that eh pre-gens have been great. They've really evolved over months of play.
It is an absolute blast.
Might be personal preference, but our lists are eerily similar. Dang. Great video

@@DMTalesTTRPGso my number 1 is not the same... I have ICRPG and i did have FBL but tapped put on it. I also have FATE on my top 5. But I think Dragonbane is 2/3 and so is Numenera... But number 1 by a lot is: Blades in the Dark.

It says it's narrative and then goes hard on crunch, but in reality it's narrative. 1 XP for Desperate Rolls feels like GM intrusions. Things are about to get bad, but the player is rewarded I use the Group Roll in every system now, even dragon bane Resisting is ALL about player agency, and Flash Backs makes every roleplayer mastermind. I will gladly run a game online.
@@DMTalesTTRPG It took me 2,5 reads and a short campaign to really grog it. It says it's narrative, then goes hard on crunch - but it really is narrative. The Resist mechanic is absolutely amazing for player agency, and the flash back makes every roleplayer a mastermind. The 1 XP for desperate situations feels like GM intrusion. Things are about to get bad, but the players is rewarded. And I use the Group Roll mechanic for every other game I play - Even Dragonbane and Coriolis. I will run a online intro game, anytime!

Name aside why does it appear overshadowed by other retro clones? Having played D&D 3e once my perspective is mainly that of an outsider. Many of the changes seem to appear in other retro clones as well. Ascending armor class, etc, etc. So is the only reason its ignored is that players want something as close to identical to B/X rules or is it simply only really personal preference?
I don’t really think it’s overshadowed. It’s got a great development community and is quite popular. It might not get Kickstarter bumps because that’s now how the project works, but the game is far from overshadowed.

I've heard that the book has many sections that are more setup for the Dungeon master than players because its a combined book. I'm of the mindset of 3 separate volumes or Major Chapters. One for the player, One for the Game Moderator and One for the Monsters. Sure there would be an increase in page count but it would make it easier for everyone all around. Thats just my opinion.
I mean, it’s a free download. Do what you want with it.
Great vid, but don't forget to make Evade rolls to move away from an enemy when you are adjacent to it (does not require an action)! Maybe allow someone to find an improvised weapon if their knife breaks? Great stuff!!!
I do forget to call for evade rolls for that movement. I need to remember! Thanks for watching!
lovely review of a book and its layout as usual. Curious if you like the large size books vs this size. I'm sure overall length might impact, but are there large sized books that you think would have done better as smaller size, or vice versa?
I’m finding that the smaller form factors are easier reading, but the larger ones may be easier for reference.
Reading Electric State now and making a gm/player cheat sheet. It is a great rules lite system

Great review! It is pretty sad to see formatting issues and typos remaining in the book 😢! I agree that glossy paper is not a good choice I would hate my OSE books if they had that
We’re all on a learning curve. Bloat Games does make good stuff.
@@DMTalesTTRPG I agree! I just hope they'll be able to do a revised version one day to fix those! But I also feel like their heart is in the right place and their stuff is good! But still learning!

It’s unfortunate about the typos. As a professional editor, I know it would not take long to do a final review. Sometimes trying to meet a deadline becomes more important.
It’s something I’m uneasy pointing out because I’m TERRIBLE with them. But…it stood out.
@@DMTalesTTRPGRight - but you are not a publisher either. :-). There are processes in place to reduce or eliminate mistakes.

ok, finally got some of my 5E friends to commit to a semi-regular ShadowDark night. Thinking about doing character creation and then set up a bunch of one-shots to get them into the game. I have Core Set and all 3 Zines. Any recommendations on some other good source material or One-Shots you enjoy? Keep up the great work.
You have as much as me at this point! Though any old school module would be easy enough to convert!

Awesome! Thank you for giving a little tour as until such a time that a portal opens there from Finland, I won't be visiting. Runehammer/Brandish/Hankerin (..?) is such a neat character as well 😁

Looks great - thanks for doing this video! I can confidently say that I wouldn't have gotten into GMing without Hankerin/Runehammer/ICRPG, so it's fantastic seeing this dream come to fruition. I'm located in NC so not sure if/when I'll be able to visit the store, but happy to be able to see it and even happier for the Philly area gaming community, and of course Brandon himself.

Good list. My top pick would be TRIPLE ACE GAMES. So much amazing material and games from them. Hellfrost for Savage Worlds is outstanding and so is their Ubiquity powered Leagues of Adventure roleplaying game. Quality.

That's funny because I just ordered a new notebook to handwrite my school campaign in! (just want to be off the computer more).
I like handwriting my notes. And then I enjoy sticking them into a computer to make it searchable for later.

@sharpmountaingames9303 for the last few years I’ve used scabbard. It’s online and light-weight. I’ve also used Scrivener and Obsidian.

Cypher is a great system. I read many other games, but when I am looking for something that is flexible enough to play any setting, it is the one I now use. So elegant, so versatile.
I very much enjoy it!
I have the remarkable tablet it is expensive but there are no apps to distract. It feels better than any iPad Also Dragonbane awesome system
