I love how Bill Murray put his arm across Owen when the chopper was crashing to protect him. Such a fatherly thing to do out of instinct. Nice touch by the director.
Great point! My mother has done that to me in the car once or twice before. I didnt think about it at the time of watching but I knew... I like the thought put into that from the director as well

I appreciate that this is subjectively what it feels like to crash. It’s not cinematic, it’s not wild. It’s just flashes of colors, memories and time loss. You don’t even feel the impact.
The breathless silence as they come down hard into the blue ocean chop. Those chaotic bubbles and flashes of red, the flashback to Ned from the beginning, the blood splashing up onto the camera lens as water laps at it. And then that fucking song... I cry every goddamn time. Beautiful film.
I always liked when characters in a Wes Anderson movie break out of their subdued demeanor and give out a bit of raw emotion. When Steve started yelling for Ned it had impact because of how reserved he was previously.
The most brilliant thing about this scene is the way the water lap up against the camera and you slowly see the waves turn red + the spurt of blood tinged water. Before that, you're thinking that Ned is fine and just a little beat up. Then when you start seeing the blood hit the camera, you suddenly realize Ned is bleeding out.
One thing I never understood when I saw this in my youth was why Eleanor took it so hard. Over the years I’ve realized (hopefully, thanks to the great direction of Wes Anderson and not me reading too much into it) the whole reason she was so hesitant to show warmth or attachment towards Ned was because she was afraid some tragedy would befall him.
This is really one of the finest movies I have ever seen with the finest cast that could have ever made this film,Steve Murray crying so subtle in the sub was perfect to Angelica Huston saying it's beautiful Steve.
This scene tears me up every time. It's so devastating and beautiful. "The Way I Feel Inside" by The Zombies is such a sad song. It's perfect. Best WES Anderson film. Best film ever.
I LOVE when a director includes a character's life flashing before their eyes. It's so quick yet extremely effective. I think a majority of us can say that from a near death experience it's just like how it's presented here.
@@Puppy_Puppington every single time. he just gets better and better. been waiting for french dispatch a year now and you already know, it's gonna be good
This scene completely subverted my expectations. I thought Ned would be ok and someone would come and save both of them, but as soon as I saw that water turn red… I knew that was it.
I love this movie so much. I listen to The Way I feel Inside all the time because of this scene and when it started playing here I just had the chills the entire time, thinking back to when I first watched this movie.
This was the saddest part of the film , But like all great discoverers they had to press on threw tragety to get that majestic shark on camera , those brave souls.
the part where they hit the water n Steve Zissou gets the flashback of Ned Standing up to ask a question from the beginning was sad :( then ned dies...broke my heart
I was looking for Ned's theme and found this. I don't get how you are all strong enough to watch this clip. I still can't stomach it. Every time I watch the film I know this scene will come but it still hits me every time and leaves me in tears so no I won't watch this youtube clip but search for the music instead. You guys are stronger than me.
So sad, but I love it so much. the music. the way the blood starts to show in the water. And that shot of Huston crying in the hold just makes it all so much more sadder. Poor Ned. He had everything, but still needed a father. And he lost everything. His mother. His money. His life.
As Jane said during the pirate attack, she needed to find a baby for this father. Ned was the baby and Steve was the father. Then this happens. So sad.
Lost control of my car during a bad snowstorm once, and it went head on into a wall on the the interstate. I remember having a very similar thought to what Steve Zissou said here, more precisely I thought, “this is going to suck,” tho the thought continued with “I hope it ends quick” as I had just seen the pain and torment my father went through a year or two prior when he was hit head on by a drunk driver (who was going 70mph through a stop light) luckily I was only going 45mph, and the wall was…well… a wall, and therefore stationary, so I only ended up with a few scrapes and bruises. Luckily the person behind me was ok too. the weirdest part tho was that a state trooper showed up almost immediately, and simply gave me instructions on how to file an accident report if i *wanted* to (don't think i ever did. maybe the guy who rear ended me after my car bounced off of the wall did?) i thought this was incredibly odd, until i looked down the road in front of where i crashed and realized that the copper had his work cut out for him: there were about half a dozen other accidents with people pulled over in front of where i crashed. i was too busy trying to control my car that i didnt even notice that a bunch of other people down the road had already had accidents themselves. this was on interstate 88 right where it intersects with i355, which overpasses 88, and it seems like all the snow from the blizzard (think we ended up getting over 2ft of snow that day) was blowing off of the overpasses (the junction there is weird.. and really tall) and onto 88 below and just causing people to spin out left and right. in the end, my car was officially totaled, but surprisingly still worked, including the dang head lights 😅. so i was able to at least get myself home, tho obviously shaken up and in a poor mood. the moral of the story? unless you're gonna move to be closer, never take a job more than an hour away. it's just not worth it. no matter how desperate you think you are, keep looking kids. that incident, while the worst, was nowhere near the last of the on-road problems i would have. for instance, another time, a 10- 15ft road construction sign almost fell right on my car during another storm as i was going through the open lane toll booth. again, luckily, no one was hurt… tho the car a few cars behind me pulled right up to the thing amd stopped. dont know what he/she was planning on doing there, or maybe he/she just weren't paying attention? Another time I saw an abandoned car on the 290 frontage road engulfed in flames, another time ended up stuck in traffic right as the tornado sirens went off… yeah, it really, REALLY isn’t worth the stress driving that far everyday. Avoid at all costs kiddos.
It's funny how you end up on TH-cam, inadvertently watching a video that takes you to an emotional place that you never thought you would arrive at just a few minutes earlier. The path that brought me to this clip was simply going to TH-cam to hear "Tell Her No," which has always been my favorite Zombies song. So after I watched the video on TH-cam, I thought...well, let's go to Spotify and listen to some of the Zombies' others songs. BTW, you may be surprised to hear that "Tell Her No" wasn't even in the Top 5 of their most popular songs on Spotify. That was surprising to me. So I listened to the Top 5, which were 1. Time of the Season, 2. She's Not There, 3. Summertime, 4. This Will Be Our Year, and then this song at #5. When I heard it, "The Life Aquatic" immediately popped into my head, but couldn't remember exactly where Wes Anderson choose to use the song. So I typed in "The Way I Feel Inside The Life Aquatic," which ultimately brought me here. BTW, I had no idea it was by The Zombies. During the movie I thought the song sounded like Nico may have sung it. Here comes the emotional part.. While watching this clip, I saw 'Stevesy' put his arm across the chest of Ned as the 'copter was going down, and it immediately reminded me of what my mom had done a number of times when my siblings and I were younger. Back then I don't think people were as concerned with wearing seatbelts, so that move of using the arm to keep the kid from flying through the windshield was likely taught in the parenting 101 classes of the 60s and 70s. 😂 So...when I initially went to TH-cam to enjoy a song I've always loved, little did I ever think I would be crying like a child early in the morning while lying in bed, because we lost mom while in surgery in late January of this year. A surgery where 98% of people make it through. I still wonder why she ended up having to be in the 2% of people that don't make it through. Especially when she was so looking forward to the rest of her life, spending time with her kids, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. The one thing I'm so very thankful for though, is that we told each other we loved each other all the time. But it wasn't always like that though. I had to learn how to say it. So if you're not telling loved ones that you love them, start today! And if you are no longer at your parents home, hug 'em and your siblings every time you all get together. Don't end up being one of those folks that regrets every moment of their life without a loved one, because you felt uncomfortable saying you love them. Force yourself to say it, until it IS comfortable.
The song is The Way I Feel Inside by The Zombies - you need to find a Zombies album with this song on it. You probably couldn't find it in a store you walk into. You'd probably have to order it online.
I’m potentially facing a breakup after 10 years. Idk why but that “this is gonna hurt” keeps popping into my head. Not the same situation but feels as real and terrifying.
When people ask me what it was like to hear my mom was gonna die from her brain tumor, I tell them about this scene. The pin snap is the news of the tumor. The phrase “This is gonna hurt” was me watching my mom die slowly. The silence was her death.
I think it could stem from the other moments in the movie when he suffered trama. Like when the Pirates knock him out. He could still be suffering from a concussion and the impact of the crash could have been too much for him.
His inner thigh in the crash had a piece of fast moving metal slice it open so his major artery bled out. These types of bleed outs are insanely fast.... inner thighs hold major major bloods vessels. Not sure if you’re educated about veins. Arteries and capillaries. But yeah. It was definitely most likely his artery.

It does feel selfish but the feeling of "feeling better" after seeing something that seems worse is a special kind of 'better'.
Robbie Clark couldn’t have quoted those better.
Just realized that the "this is gonna hurt" line is a foreshadowing of his grief over Ned's death.
