    I really liked watching this. I've been told a bunch of times that bigger guys like the coil better but have always been warned that the coil takes away from some of the poppy feeling of the bike. Because of that I've really been hesitant to try one. It's a big commitment of cost to just "try" it. After hearing what you have said it was enough for me to just back burner the new camera and go for a coil. Thanks dude....um...I guess. LOL, I'll send you an invoice. :)

      You should look into one of the progressive coil options, your gen Bronson doesn't have the same curve as the newer SC bikes, and you might find yourself bottoming it out easily with a regular coil. Thinking about trying the Cane Creek setup on my 5010.

    • @archetypex65

      B1, if you get a good coil shock e.g. fairly expensive then you will have no problem on the big hits and feeling the pop just look at what Loric Bruni is running on his specialized.

    Exactly my thoughts when I switched to coil this year. I went for marz bomber with avy tuned. Knowing that it will have great small bumps sensitivity, I was blown away by how much support you get when you push into it. It pops when you want it to and it complies when you want it to.

    • @mtbsavant5414

      Yeah these coil shocks (and bikes in general) have come a long way!

    • @AltitudeAerials
      @AltitudeAerials 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @theweaksoup were you riding that bomber before the avalanche tune? Can I ask how different it is after being tuned by them?

    • @TheWeaksoup
      @TheWeaksoup 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AltitudeAerials The stock one is quite good already compare to air shock, but lacks bottom out support. @150 lbs, my frame suggests a 400 lbs spring rate to achieve 28% sag. It can sometimes get hang up on high speed hits. The pedaling platform is.. well like a coil. Likes to bob a bit when pushing the pedals. The small bumps sensitivity is good, one of the biggest change from air shock.
      With the Avvy tuned, there's a better pedaling platform and with a slighty better small bumps sensitivity. No harsh bottom out so far. The biggest thing is the midstroke support that I was missing when I switch to coil, with avy tuned its always there when I need it.

My rear shock only has 10 clicks of adjustable rebound.. so its sitting right at 5 & moving it up or down is too dramatic of a change in feel. Max Mustermann Nice 👍🏼 I’ll definitely have to give it a consideration.. may end up having a coil & an air option for the future if I ever try the Cascade Link. Then perhaps I’ll have a more DH focused bike & also keep the trail bike feel! 👌🏼

    • @MaxMustermannnnnn
      @MaxMustermannnnnn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bike Somm in my opinion the Megatower is a really downhill focused bike. I really don‘t know if I still need my dh bike. Which Megatower build do you have? I have the S Kit with a Push 11.6. Maybe i will do the Grip2 upgrade and a 170mm airshaft for my Fox36. For me weight is not important, the C frame is enough. GX Eagle is as good as the X01 and Sram Code R are really good brakes. For the testride I got the XTR Kit and I really didnt like the shifter.

    • @bike_somm
      @bike_somm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Max Mustermann Nice! Yea it’s got the attitude and pedigree for some DH stuff! Especially if you play with all the dials.. longer, lower, overforked.. what would be ideal is to have the Megatower & a Tallboy but I’m not made of money! I’d say the Grip2 is probably the best upgrade I’ve done for my bike yet! But I have the same build.. I have the C S build but with the Reserve Rims. GX is okay.. but I’m all about Shimano, as soon as I can I’m ditching Everything Sram on this bike! Lol I like XT shifting way better as you can do multiple shifts up or down in the cassette.. Sram you gotta hit the button a bunch more if you want to drop gears fast

I've gone back and forth once now between the X2 and the RS Super Delxe + Coil the bike came with. Currently back on the X2 but after watching this I think I am gonna go back to the Coil and spend some more time on it I agree that SC may have designed this bike primarily around a coil as the Coil feels great and the bike pedals well with it.

      There's always a tradeoff when designing a bike with 2 different shock options. I'm pretty convinced they designed this bike around the coil first based on how well it rides. The SD air isn't bad but takes some work to get it to feel right for most people.

      @@mtbsavant5414 100%. The negligible amount of added weight didn't outweigh the other advantages of running the coil for me, on my local terrain. YMMV. The traction I have at the rear end while getting to the top of technical, rocky, singletrack before bombing back down, is amazing with the coil. Keeping the pedals moving over chunk is now much easier with the coil since I don't feel like my feet are gonna get bounced off the pedals. I exhausted lots of time cycling through different settings on the same sections of trails over a few months to get it pretty close but not as well rounded as I'd have hoped. The coil solved that for me. The bike also carries more speed through rock gardens where before the rear would get hung up on square edged stuff pretty badly!

      The core purpose of a suspension is not to make a ride plush that is a misnomer. If your ride is plush then your sag is set incorrectly. As well as most likely your compression settings. The main job of a suspension is to keep the wheels in contact with the ground as much as possible not to make the ride comfortable that is only a byproduct, an ancillary factor. 🤦‍♂️
