Robert Greene is like a defense against the dark arts teacher. You should not confuse that with somebody who promotes the use of dark arts. You need to master the dark arts in order to master yourself, and in turn become a better more integrated person. Carl Jung knew this aswell. He once said that "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate."

48 is like a gun. Yeah, in the wrong hands in it's dangerous. In the right hands, however, it's the ultimate form of self-defense against psychopaths.

Is 48 Laws Of Power a dangerous book?
YES. YES IT IS, and that's exactly what makes it a must read, along with 33 Strategies Of War. It gives YOU, the average Joe Snuffy who is down on his luck or too much of a people pleaser, an opportunity to learn how to use some of that compassion for yourself in a productive manner so that you can properly be a much more wholesome and assertive person. They teach you how to be the master of your own life and destiny, instead of letting the evils of society ruin you and keep you subservient.
Thank you, Mr. Greene, for writing these two books. I always constantly go back and try to apply these principles in both books, and they have helped me personally. Highly recommend them to anyone out there who is stuck in the rut, feels a lack of self worth, and is feeling powerless.

I volunteered as a Christian mentor at a prison in Minnesota for 3 years. I met with murderers, pedophiles, gang members, and everything in between. Nearly every inmate I spoke to had either read all of the 48 laws or had read part of it or had learned about the 48 laws from the other inmates. It's like their handbook.
I've read the book several times myself (I have 2 copies) and can say the book itself isn't evil, but its application can be. For some it might be a guidebook to malevolent power grabbing. For others, like myself, it can be a guide against those who seek to use it for evil. Like any secular philosophy, the book will give you what you take out of it.
If you purely want success, the 48 laws is a way to go. If you want happiness, I suggest you look at your own ethics and morals and apply those things to your personal relationships. Good people can win, just don't be weak or stupid.

Thanks for the beautiful summation. Too many people chase success by any means necessary, irrespective of the overall cost. The physical health afflictions of the author himself should be something people should know, there is a fair bit of stress with these methods. Secular philosophy, just like secular beliefs like communism come at huge cost, overall but most people are obsessed with short term goals.

Robert is a special person. I was entranced by the 48 laws the moment I set my eyes on it. I'll never forget the sense of relief and excitement I felt as I was reading through the blurbs in the content section of the book. It was exactly the kind of knowledge I desperately needed. I've read all his books and loved all of them, but it's after you've gained some experience in life that you truly come to appreciate the value of the ideas in his books. You also realize something about him: He is a person who sets an extremely high standards for himself and the ideas he communicates. He never writes something because it sounds interesting or clever. The ideas he communicates touch to the core the pain or problem you are experiencing in some aspect of your life. His work gives you true power when you feel lost and powerless, who can resist that?

Depth of character is a rare quality, most of us are defensive about our beliefs, and will feel extremely uncomfortable when challenged. Your books do a good job of opening our minds to different possibilities; forexample the idea of integrating our 'darkside' into our persona. Prisoners can use this to transform themselves for the better.

The 48 Laws of Power was a transformative book for me because it describes selfish tactics that it would never have occurred to me that a person would ever use. One example is making others do the work and taking all the credit. I would never do this, but the book opened my eyes to recognizing this and other tactics.
This is why I've given out several copies of the book to close friends that I've known long enough to use the book ethically. That said, there are plenty of tactics that are both ethical and advisable to observe, such as always saying less than necessary and avoiding the unhappy and unlucky.
It's not good when Greene's books fall into the hands of those without moral compunction, but an artist cannot control who their audience is. The best we can do is to raise children properly, rehabilitate criminals, and make ethical people aware of how bad guys operate.

I didn't know about its popularity in prison. In my case some years ago I was reluctant about reading these kind of "machiavellian" books as I assumed it's for so greedy and power obsessed people. Recently I got to realize that it's mostly practical and reasonable ways to avoid unwanted and unnecessary frictions and problems dealing with people , why go head to head when you can go along by being practical. I'm not surprised about its popularity in prison cause in prison the mask that society always wears drops and things happen at their most organic and natural way. So you can't ask people to give you your rights there or just let you survive, you gotta find the best ways. Racism, violence, bullying, hard power, all the things we tend to overlook and seem to not exist in the life outside are all in their most honest shape in prison. That's when practicality is the way to go.

I think the thing about power moves is it helps me inately understand the toxic things about themselves. Like personally I used to stone wall allot on relationships, I have an anxious avoudent attachment style and I tend to guilt people/play victim and or use games that give me more power unknowingly to the fact that it is toxic. Someone who is power aware and what not will try and maximize the amount of win-win relationships in one's life and have inherently higher quality relationships.

Prisons regularly ban the 48 Laws. Obviously they want prisoners as powerless as possible so I suppose that makes sense. Anyways it's a great book,, but of course different people will use it for different reasons. Like almost all things, it is exactly what you make of it. Calling the book evil is ridiculous and ignorant. It's a cop out. That suggests the person reading isn't responsible for the how they use the content when that's exactly the case. this book is basically reporting a truth that makes uncomfortable and it's easier to just demonize it. It's crazy how many people are terrified at self- reflection, because it's obviously part of the point of the book... just saying it's a warning about all the evil doers out there, is silly. (As Robert would say, "a little pollyannish" lol) it reveals the shadow, which all of us have because we're human. Basically everyone is capable of at least some of these behaviors. Sometimes without even thinking... because most people don't really think about why they're doing stuff, they just react, based on emotion. His books make you examine things closer. make you think, and reflect...& if some of that's not pointing inward, then you've missed half the message. his books are great ways to check yourself on your own bullshit lol. Robert does actually. I love that he actually applies his own advice to himself first before the readers. My favorite. I even named my cat Brutus LOL

The book does promote sociopathy - lets not dance around the issue. The major theme of the book is letting deception work for you. I've read the book twice. It has described my corporate experience for over 20 years. Let me just say that every colleague that has exhibited those traits didn't end up better in the end for it. I was very much aware of those tactics I just chose not to use them. Especially due to the pandemic each of those past employers that had those tactics embedded in the corporate culture couldn't withstand the economic downturn because the foundation of the business was not based on truth. Past bosses that lived by those principles ended up having to accept that letting others do the work couldn't work in a work from home set up where there were digital trails for almost everything. Of course, that showed up who truly was doing the work and who actually had the most value to offer. Some companies actually let go management and kept the junior workers. That's why there is this manipulation tactic in the media to try to bamboozle people to come back to the office if they don't really have to - their narcissism and deception can't work in the absence of others would have been recruited to play along. They can't hide behind the physical presence of a fellow colleague and make them the fall guy and having emails copied to other senior management or having conference calls that can be recorded paves the way for transparency that would have never been done in an in-person manner at the office where discussions are held behind closed doors to which senior management is not privy to. Senior management is now forced digitally to look at actual real time figures vs taking a doctored report by a competitive sociopath playing victim.

And also how satan is really delicate with a devious heart which the book presents. The book talks about place your iron in a velvet glove its a good book but the enemy comes in sweet and pleasant ways be careful. The devil is like a roaring lion looking for whom he can devour you must be alert sober and vigilant at all times. The book does warn you in the beginning. The human mind along its journey often confuses the display of pictures of the dark with the Dark.
This comes always into experience just before the transition to next level. But what facilitates mostly this dangerous endeavor is by far the desymbolisation of the "paintings of darkness". In fact it is a great civil service what you do, Robert! And just in time. 🙏

I think another reason why the 48 laws of power can be popular in prisons is because it reveals the manipulation that was done on the individual incarcerated. they look back and realize that it wasn’t their heart that led them to where they were at. It was circumstances, people and just bad fate. And then so it can be useful to undoing what had brought them there

Wow I had no idea you collaborated with 50 cent and Potter Payper! That is crazy... Potter Payper is a real legend in the UK, his music relates to me on a personal level. What you said at 5 minutes in is spot on. People are not very open minded nowadays, so books like the 48 laws of power always interest me

Hi Mr. Greene, the way you spoke in this video shows you have great character. You have just been red-pilled by life. A lot of good people with good characters haven’t had to go through failures a lot cos they chose a purely introverted career and life. There’s a saying in my state, Kerala (Southern India) that good people should sort of “lay low” in the society and live a “meek” life. I remember my grandmom forcing that idea on me my whole childhood. I’ve read 48 Laws of Power just after I finished high school. I have never used any ideas, but throughout my college and work life, I have detected people using it. I guess truth is always bland and formless, but people after knowing them, use it ethically or unethically which again comes to what you have said, real character. I’m a teacher, I’ve noticed that you can never bring out something that isn’t already there. Same applies to evil/ malice.

The most important part of Roberts wisdom, is to guard us. Guard us against our own and others narcissism. Don`t be a fool and belive that all people out there have your best interest in they`re minds. Narcissism is real!. It`s in your community, your family, at your workplace... It`s rampant among leaders and celebrities.
The insights of RG is also a tool to give us focus in a world of distraction and cheap entertainment.
Strive to the old virtues of the Greeks ( Stoicism), and the Japanese ( Zen). Against a world of hedonism and short term gratification. Where beeing " Mr nice" can be as dangerous as to be mr " self obsessed asshole". RG`s wisdom and story`s help us see that we are all fighting the same fight against our own irrationality and against others.

    Sir, Robert.
Your work is amazing with new style.
All those people who are opine it is evil.
I think it depends on the intent of the viewer. What he want to use the knowledge you have poured on the pages of the book.

I myself listened to this audio book while working ona night train through Europe, and I have to say it was dangerous for me personally. I got hooked to it the second I laid my eyes on it, started applying everything into my life even though a few things in terms of manipulation and "detective work" I already used a lot before reading it without even knowing I was doing it. One thing led to another, started smoking weed a lot, lack of sleep as well always on the road. I started LIVING the book, felt unstoppable until one day I started to have some sort of delusional thinking which led to paranoia and the next thing you know I beat up a colleague thinking he's conspiring against me, not long later they suspended me and police took me to a mental institution where I asked them to let me out, to which I got an answer "yeah in 15 minutes when the policemen come back", I asked politely, around 10 times to which I got the same answer even though I waited for roughly 2 hours. I got to that point of not patient enough that I grabbed the nearest butter knife off of a meal tray next to the smoking room, took the doctor from behind grabbed him by the neck and put the knife to his throat threatening him to let me the F out, to which his colleague attacked me from behind pushing me and resulting in me accidentally cutting the doctors neck, there was a lot of blood, policemen came then in a matter of seconds, long story short I fought with 3 cops and 2 doctors untill another sneaky bastard came into the room with some sort of tranquilizer then I was out cold. 6 months later I got sued by that doctor and now I'm 3 years on parole and 3 years of psychotherapy.
Honestly the book itself shouldn't be that dangerous when you're sober I reckon.

It could be a dangerous book -- it depends who gets hold if it. So can many books. John Lennon was killed supposedly because of Catcher in the Rye. When I was at university I studied psychology and communication. There is a lot of evidence to suggest violent people seek out violent media. In the same way I'd hypothesise that manipulative people seek out books on manipulation.

You teach the ways of the narcissistic world... This is valuable information that all of us need in order to not fall prey to the jackals... Your strategy keeps one in the narcissistic games and in a seat of weakness. Playing the secretive manipulative games are adopting the rules of the narcissist... When there is a whole other game that you have not ventured to play yet... It is the game of the hero... The game of the one who walks in integrity.. The game that the narcissist does not know how to play.... The game that crushes them... The one that true leaders play.... This is not the game of MASTERY that is being taught here.. It's a strategy of survival not leadership.

It doesn't matter if what is said in the brook is ethical or not whether you like it or not if the book offends you it's your problem. You can say whatever you want but this book is how the human society functions and it works the way it works. This book is a guide to prevent yourself from the dangers of the human realm. But if you use the book to do evil then it's your responsibility, use it as a sword or a sheild.

"[188a]...For I delight, Lysimachus, in conversing with the man, and see no harm in our being reminded of [188b] any past or present misdoing: nay, one must needs take more careful thought for the rest of one's life, if one does not fly from his words but is willing, as Solon said,
“I grow old learning ever more and more;" (Solon Fr. 10)
[189a] So if he has that gift as well, his wish is mine, and I should be very glad to be cross-examined by such a man, and should not chafe at learning; but I too agree with Solon, while adding just one word to his saying: I should like, as I grow old, to learn more and more, but only from honest folk. Let him concede to me that my teacher is himself good-else I shall dislike my lessons and be judged a dunce-but if you say that my teacher is to be a younger man, [189b] or one who so far has no reputation, or anything of that sort, I care not a jot. I therefore invite you, Socrates, both to teach and to refute me as much as you please, and to learn too what I on my part know; such is the position you hold in my eyes since that day on which you came through the same danger with me, [189c] the difference of our ages."
    ~Plato, Laches (188a, 188b, 189a, 189b, 189c)

While it can be used as a "here's what to be aware of and look out for in other people" book like you say, the way it is written with your choices of narrivate and language definitely suggests using the laws for the purposes of manipulation and selfish intent. Its not just statements and historical facts it IS written like a how to guide. I enjoy your content, but wish you spoke more on your opinions of positive human traits that arent focused on achieving specific outcomes, such as honesty
