I Built A Roof Tent. Lightweight Hardshell with Carbon Fibre Floor

- DIY ROOF TENT
I set a goal of building a Roof Tent myself. Learning new things such as how to use a sewing machine, what lightweight materials were suitable and even designing custom hinges.
I made 3 versions, trying to maximise space while keeping the tent weight low. It's was a huge challenge making this tent and endless hours of work, research and sourcing materials.
In the end I almost achieved the 35-40kg weight goal, with a 42kg dry weight (without the mattress and accessories). I know what changes to make to be 37kg but it's too expensive to make a 4th version at this time.
Size wise, it's big enough for me at 6 foot tall. It's low profile at 100mm and I can still store an inflatable mattress, pillow, down quilt and poles when closed. However, it does lack a lot of the luxuries and is not as good as a professionally made roof tent.
I'm happy and it looks awesome on top of the Jimny, almost like a roof rack. I'll release a video detailing more about this project.
DIY KITCHEN
A fun project was the slide out kitchen. I'm delighted with how this turned out. It's slimline design which in my opinion is essential with such limited space in a Jimny.
Measuring 80mm high and 1320mm long. It can hold weight loads up to 200kg. It's rock solid!
I chose this design instead of the tailgate drop down tables for 3 reasons.
1. It's more worktop space.
2. I don’t have to deal with the weird slope on the Jimny door.
3. I can still access my Molle pouches on the tailgate. (Even with a Molle compatible tailgate table I'm not keen on usability of accessing their contents with the table in use)
It includes a slimline sink and running water via the new Dometic battery operated faucet. On top is a drawer fridge with 21 litres of capacity. small but enough for me. I would have liked a better brand and slightly larger capacity fridge, like the Dometic drawer fridge, but they're very expensive. Hopefully this cheaper option will work well. Its efficiency is okay when combined with the Bluetti EB55 Powerstation.
I made the kitchen slide slimline instead of taller and leaving permanently affixed equipment like the sink and stove. The reason is I don't always want to take a sink and double stove. I prefer modular set ups where I can choose what I take based on the trip. Fractionally more set up time in exchange for extra storage space and flexibility.
In the video I've shown the simple set up for when you're on the go and just need a quick coffee or to heat up some soup. Then if you're spending longer at a fixed camping location you can cook a bigger meal using the double stove.
This set up uses the least amount of space and I can still sleep in the car during bad weather. An option I did not want to lose.
KUKSA GIVEAWAY
I promised a Kuksa giveaway on the channel and it will happen in June. I'm just adding the final touches. I've had so many attempts crack that end up on a fire. Thankfully this one has survived my amateur carving processes! I'll do my best to make sure it's lovely to look at and beautifully finished.
CHANNEL UPDATE
I plan to start releasing videos more regular. I've trips organised with other 4x4 owners but will make most of my videos solo. I also want to release DIY build and equipment related shorter videos. I'll put them in a separate playlist from the silent camping videos. I hope you find them useful and interesting.

Thx! More to come Denis, just had a really nice overnight camp
Love that set up 👏👏👏
Cheers Rob!
We’ll done, mate.
Very clever use of space with attachments to the slide out kitchen counter. Have a fun summer.
Cheers Tony, already been out for another camp. It’s working out to cracking setup so far mate. I like the kitchen better than the RTT if I’m honest
Long time no see, missed your videos but the unfortunate events in UKR has consumed most of my free time.
It makes me happy to see that you’re still around, and to see that some are the same other stuff has evolved. Looking forward to binge watch the rest of your videos I haven’t seen.

Not a Jimmy owner but I love your videos! The Rtt and the kitchen are awesome. If I can I would suggest you to clean the paper coffee filter with hot water before you put the grinded coffee. The coffee will taste better for sure! Keep going! 👍🏻

You’re right! I always forget to do that 🤦🏻♂️
I congratulate you for the peace that you transmit yo us. Thanks for coming back. Grettings for Argentina.

Welcome back. Wife and I really enjoy your videos. The kitchen set up looks really good. Looking forward to the next video.
Thank you very much! Next video in a few hours 😊👌
So great to see you in action again! 🎉 Absolutely addictive content. Could literally spend hours watching your videos.
The time you spend on the tent and kitchen totally paid off. Love it!
When can I come join you at camp 😂
Seriously great job!
Thanks mate 😅👍 it’s certainly been an experience all these months messing on with the tent. Not something I’d hurry to do again haha
Your new kitchen, and setup in general is a perfect example of why one doesn’t need a Sprinter van or other huge rig to get the courage of going car camping. :)
Big vehicles just mean you’re limited when going off road/overlanding.
As a Scot I love the whisky dispenser - wonderful idea!

Hi David, glad you like them 🙌🏻 thanks for watching the words of encouragement 🤩🍻
Great video as always, especially nice after a year of silence haha, keep up the good work bruh!
Thanks! brilliant to be back making videos mate
Great return to TH-cam mate. I love this current set up you have going on, the custom roof tent looks bob on, the awning is just perfect for the Jimny and the kitchen set up is so ideal for a simple small car 👌🏼
I could tell you were using a camera this time round with the deeper bokeh shots. Great picture quality. Hopefully with a few more videos to come you’ll get the hang of it to be able to set it up quicker for each shot. Have you tried to use manual focus yet for framing still shots?
This video has made me miss the Jimny camping style, will have to see what I can do with my new car and combine the two together one day to reunite 😊😎
brother! You watched it 🤩
We’ll have to do a camp again sometime soon mate.
Yeah I did it all in full manual. It’s still difficult for me but I’m slowly learning. Feel like most of it is under or over exposed and if I get exposure right the focus ends up being wrong. it’s all fun and games. Won’t go back to iPhone I’ll persist! I think a different lens would help save me a lot of time. I move the camera A LOT and having only a 50mm prime lens or 24mm (I think) gets tiresome quickly. I’m hoping I can only get better.
Keep watching Morinone’s TH-cam channel and drooling over it 😂. Maybe one day but not anytime soon.
Good to be back making stuff though and have many plans for fun short trips that might be nice to watch. Time will tell 🍻
I just saw you on the road In Austria and i was like ahhhhhh how does it feeeel to live my dreammmm🤣🤍🥰
Must have been a doppelgänger. Would be great to drive some Austrian road though 😂👍
1st time I've used live chat, somehow lost access to it on my mobile. apologies if any comments went unanswered, especially in languages I could not copy to google translate 😉
Also live chat reply isn’t working. There’s only 1 message in there. It’s enabled in settings 🤷🏻♂️
I literally watch these every morning and it’s honestly so peaceful! I bought a Jimny and like most I’ve become obsessed.
I hope the next video, you have more of the tent setup, would love to see more of that 😅… still best one yet.
Thx Dylan! Thanks man, hey if anything I can help a few people get to sleep 😂
I’ve got a new video to edit from a camp a few nights ago. Even though I shot a load of tent tour content during this video it come out rubbish! I can’t move with a camera very well so my pal is going to loan me his posh gimbal.
Proper Tent tour I’ll shoot again soon and release that separate 👍
@@GeordieJimny hey man, I took a look at the short you did with the tent!! Very cool!!
Nice setup man. Nice tools too...
Thanks man! 🍻
In Filipino, we say "Tagay!"when we drink. ;) Love the video! Keep them coming. New subscriber here from the Philippines.
I am not sure what's the exact translation of "tagay" but I do feel like it means something like "drink your worries away" lol.
Thanks and welcome! Appreciate the info. a new toast for me. “Tagay” love it 😂
love your slimline RTT! look like a professionally built instead of a DIY job. and just a mere 42kg??! thats awesome! Ive been meaning to built something like this too.. a lightweight, slim full clampshell RTT.. Appreaciate it if you have a full bulit video or specs sheet of the materials used, especially the fabric, bug net and what not.
Hi yeah I’m going to make a video with a closer look at each element of the tent. A blog will talk about the build guide as I did not have the time to video building it. It’s been 3 versions over 12 months and a bit of a nightmare 😅. I’ll write a blog on the build now that I have a clearer understanding.
Please share the specs and video. It’s amazing setup you have built.👌👏👏
@@vikramsinghnegi4444 hi mate. I’ll get it done eventually but it’ll be a blog only I just don’t have any spare time or space to shoot build videos. Plus I’d have to dismantle the tent and I’m in no hurry to ever make one again 😅
Missed the videos. Regards from Brazil
Thx 😊 🙌🏻
hi, will you be selling the roof tops? if not, will you show the process of DIY'ing it?
Thanks! loved thje video
Hi Neil, they’re not good enough to sell. I had plans to do a build guide but that is really hard now without dismantling everything. For the amount of views it would get it’ll just add way more time to something that already was commercially insane to do. The Carbon fibre floor panel was £900 never mind all the rest 😅 and I’ve had to silicone seal it.
As far as I can determine the Alu-cab lt-50 is the best option for a jimny lighter weight wedge tent.
Saúde , Brazilian cheers.....
🍻
veri good
Welcome bro, nice to see you long time , good news for us suzuki jimny launch five door version in india,
Hi! yes exciting times for you guys in India. Looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts after driving the 5-door 👍
Small suggestion: You can place one small pole at the end under that kitchen pull over rack, which balances the weight at the top.. I have seen that type in some videos. I can check and share that link if needed.
PS: I have liked your camping in Jimny for the last few years, only thing is once in a few months you are posting a video.

Hi Geordie,
Those badges for the tactical bags are awesome, would you consider making them and selling them, they would sell like hot cakes!!!
Hi mate, thanks! I was going to make some for my Etsy store. I’ll add them to the list 😅👍
where have you been my friend? good to see you again.
Hi mate! So busy with my work. Poor little Jimny’s sitting parked up mostly these days. Sign of the times that disappearing to the woods to sit and do nothing is a luxury one can’t afford the time to do 😂
Hope life is being good to you!
Hi Geordie,
The way you mount your little burner is such a great idea, I did manage to find the exact burner on the web, does it make a good connection with the canister, i thought the thread was slightly recessed on the canister?
Kind regards
Tony
Hi Tony the stainless steel top is 1.2mm and it makes a good connection as far as I’ve found. The rubber washer on the bottom helps cinch it down. Not done any gas detection on it mind 😂
@@GeordieJimny Haha...thank you for the quick reply Sir!
Lets face it, if there was any gas leak it would be minute and in the open air no problem at all :))
😆👍
Fantastic setup, especially since you made it all yourself.
Any chance of seeing how you made the roof top tent please?
Hi, I’ll be making a walk around video. It’s been a lot of work on 3 versions but I will write a blog to explain roughly what I did. It’s not perfect but might give others some good information to help make their own one better.
@@GeordieJimny it looks great! Thank you, looking forward to seeing more, cheers 🙂
Same for kitchen set up please? Blog / detailed video?
Very nice set up. I really want to do a similar kitchen design with large fridge but i also want to sleep inside with space for 2 people. Cant figure it out 😅
I made it so I can still sleep in it myself but yeah some sort of camp kitchen chuck box that clamps in somehow. Waterproof and quick release. Quite the design challenge 😅👍
Is that tent frame made from aluminum extrusions? Asking becuas eim planning out my own build and just trying to get ideas
Hi yeah it certainly is. 👍

Nice set up! Do you make and sell rtt? I need something light like your rtt..
Hi there. I did make it yeah. 😆
Epic rig! How's the Whiskey bottle? Amazing. Suzuki should look at the load rating on the roof... It's only 30kg.
🥃👌 30kg is a carry over from the gen 3. 40kg is the figure floating around from dealerships. Still everyone using the roof is putting more on. Personally like no more than 60kg but I’ve upgraded the suspension and wouldn’t carry that on stock suspension
@@GeordieJimny Fair enough. In the event of a collision, our insurance in Australia would be void due to over loading the roof. 35K down the shitter! It's those little details that people forget about.......... Food for thought huh?
Same here with insurance mate yeah. Like I say everyone loading the roof are subject to these self imposed risks. It’s the most asked question about these cars in my experience. If you read my blog that goes into loads of detail you’ll see I mention this a lot. Always say Don’t do as I do, but this is what I’m willing to do👌

P.S. the watch is a brand called VAER
@@GeordieJimny thank you, I sat in one today, just need a test drive now!
Two quick questions if I may?
WHERE is that location? It looks stunning! I hope it’s Brockwell again because that’s not that far from me! 😂
How are you finding the EB55? How long does it power your fridge for?
Cheers
Hi Michael, yes it is. Best place for natural no facilities camping.
I couldn’t run my kit or make videos without the EB55. It keeps my iPhone, Sony batteries, fridge and LED lights going for a few days of usage. If I use car charging and solar it’ll top off to 100% quite quickly. I think there’s newer ones now but this just works.
@@GeordieJimny I really should get myself along there in my Amarok sometime, I’m only in a Whitley Bay, so not far at all!
That’s great to hear about the EB55. I’m looking in the mine field that is dual batteries, and keep flipping better a permanently wired second battery, something like the EB55 or something else.
What attachment is that for your whisky bottle?? That is such a unique and kickass idea!
It’s an 50ml optics & optics wall bracket from Amazon. Just had to drill some holes to match up with the molle panel mounts 🙂
👍
Can you do a detailed video on the slide out table? I im in a defender 90 and have the same space challenges.
Hi mate, build guides aren’t really my thing on the channel. I do have a blog that shows the first version slider I made with aluminium extrusion. The new one is just an iteration of that. Not sure it’s the most cost efficient way of making these but it’s the easiest to avoid welding and sheet metal bending.
It’s basically aluminium extrusion 20/80 and heavy duty sliders bolted on. Then aluminium angle for the sides with stainless steel sheets bolted on top. The measurement etc can be whatever you want to fit your own needs.

@@GeordieJimny спасибо большое вам:)
Really nice gadgets and DIY! Regarding the stove, given that there is the metal board between the gas canister and the burner, how do you ensure there is no gas leakage? Usually there is a washer in the burner to seal it but in this setup it us not the case. Any gas leakage is dangerous.
Hi cheers it’s been good fun making it all. The rubber washer is still sandwiched between the canister and the stainless steel worktop. It’s only 1.2mm thick and cinches down tight.
@GeordieJimny I see. However, just be careful of gas leakage through the thread area of the gas burner which attaches to the canister. Threads do not seal perfectly and the gasket usually seals that area too when burner is connected directly to the canister.
On another note, great videos. I dream of having a Jimny one day to be able to mod and camp out over here too.
Thank you! I’ll make sure it’s not leaking 👍
By the way I’m working with a jimny camper hire company in the north east. We’re about to start building their 1st jimny camper (better than mine!) www.fieldtripsupplies.com

Hi Nakul, I’m in the north east of England at a woodland owned by a farming family who hire campsite plots to people for ‘back to nature’ style camping.

What weight and closed dimensions of tent
42kg - 2004mm x 1346mm x 100mm
Did inspired overland rip this off?
I think there’s is way better 😅👍
I got a lot of inspiration from Headway Drive channel, who got his from another channel. All just iterations with a few little improvements along the way.
When I have the time and budget I’ve got a lot of improvements to make for a version 4 of my own attempt. Financially I’d be better off buying one though, making one is very inefficient cost wise.
@@GeordieJimny well atleast you're learning in the process, and you can always improve it.
What pants are you wearing please?
Hi they’re GP Trousers from revolutionrace.com
jimnys has only 30kg roof weight capacity (roof rack included)
It’s quoted 40kg by some Suzuki garages. Ultimately every jimny that uses the roof in a typical way for tents, awnings or even just the full rack (with stuff carried on it), exceeds the manufacturer’s roof limit. It’s not uncommon to see people carrying upwards of 90kg roof load. It’s all at the owners risk. Personally after 3 years of ownership I find anything under 60kg with the upgraded suspension, drives perfectly well. I would obviously not do crazy off road tracks with any roof load at all. I don’t do it doesn’t matter. 👍
❤️❣️♥️😇💗💝💫⭐💖
😊✌️
Thats a lot of crap for a cup of coffee. I usually turn off , when the grinders come out. lol.
One man’s crap is another man’s delicious coffee 😅👌
It seems unnecessary to use your lamps when it is daytime, as well as using wood to keep the fire burning all the time. I think that part of going out into nature, in addition to apprehending it, is to encourage saving resources and caring for them.
The camera shows everything a lot lighter than it is to me while I’m there.
It’s a commercial campsite that sells the firewood to fund their tree planting scheme.
Thanks for watching 👍
