      Thanks Ash. I've bought two different thickness lockpick kits from Law Lock Tools, and can endorse the company without reservation. The picks are indeed beautifully finished, and worth every penny invested in them. They cost less than another well-known brand of tools which need to be imported, have a better finish, and seem to be more durable.
      For example, my wife snapped the more expensive .0025" Bogotá without really trying, and a 25 thou short hook has bowed with use, but even Law's .0019" tools have withstood some more strenuous work than the US items, without showing any signs of stress. Furthermore, Andy is a gentleman to deal with, as you likely know already. His customer support has been exemplary.
      I'm in the process of adding heat shrink handle covers, which is no problem whatsoever; merely my choice, in order to improve comfort without losing too much feedback.
      The only useful improvement which I would like to see is a simple slip of paper, along with each kit, showing the head of each type of pick, along with its name, so that ordering duplicates, or variants in different thicknesses, is simplified. Maybe this could be printed on the accompanying invoice, and then it will not waste any paper?
      At a later date, I'll likely be looking for a .0012" pick set, for those really tight keyways. Not yet though; I'm not _that_ skilled. 😉

  • @tipenengapuhi
    @tipenengapuhi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Yes, a number of Picks in this kit do have similar reach but reach is only one factor in a Picks functionality. Maneuverability is another ingredient. This is primarily achieved through Tip profile, shank height and the gauge of steel.
    Take for example a Yale Y1 keyway. You can have 2 Picks with the same reach one of which will let you access a hight set pin behind a low set pin and another that won't. A curved profile like the Lockout Buster can be more difficult to twist around the contour of a paracentric keyway then the more angled profile of a Deforest Teardrop or Bijou. My point is not all reach is created equal.

      Well, I think all the profiles are extremely useable and made of a high quality material with a great finish, which surely is the only important factor for any pick set. I would use any of the hooks in a given lock for sure! That being said, in my experience, and in full acknowledgment that I am just one opinion of many, there are a couple of profiles here that together I feel do the same job. Again, at least for me; it’s possible I don’t have enough experience with the kit, haven’t found a lock where a clear advantage is seen or I just don’t have the picking finesse required, I’m certainly not perfect. All the profiles are great so in the end, my point is barely critical, or at least wasn’t intended to be.

      @tipenengapuhi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@LockNoob
      My point was not intended as criticism of your review, just an explanation of why I believe some profiles have a similar reach. I should also make the point the profiles I contributed to the kit were developed long before I had even seen a Law Lock Tools Pick set. They were my answer to problems I was trying to solve at a point in time. As a result it's probably no surprise that the profiles I contributed have similar characteristics to some of the profiles Law Lock Tools already had. I'm definitely no Raimundo or Christina Palmer, I simply dabble around the edges of what's already known.

      Tipene Nga Puhi I understand, thanks. Also, don’t put yourself down. I actually think you are very much up there with your designs and I the important thing is you understand how they perform, why they perform and most importantly THAT they perform since you use them - it’s not a theoretical

      @@tipenengapuhi What a gracious and humble reply - but your skills at both the picking and the pick designs are legendary, and right up there with the others you mention. Maybe your designs aren't derived using mathematical formulae, but they are the result of a high level of skill and experience. As you know, Andy's version of your Scimitar solved a problem for me. Better to have more options than fewer. The combination of you and Andy seems to hit the right notes bang on! Keep up the great work, both of you :) And @Lock Noob - keep your objective and in-depth reviews coming - they're excellent :)

    Great set - I have these as well as several other ones of Andy's. Just one nit-pick correction: the cycloid waves are the ones with the peaks on them (like a series of adjacent arcs or part-circles), while the sinusoidal ones are the ones with the rounded tops - the whole thing looking like a sine wave. In Andy's own words (from his FB page) "The Sinusoidal has a regular smooth sine type wave but the Cycloid profiles have a sharper peak to them."
    All my Law Lock picks are really well finished, and having longer handles than most, they fit my (large) hands beautifully. They feel like high quality surgical instruments.

    My best overall kit so far. But the case could be improved - if you throw it in a bag you'll soon find all of your prybars have escaped and is is lurking at the bottom of your bag. This is a common problem with this kind of case - not just this case. And that's my major and only complain -> really good kit. I'd recommend this as a started kit as you get more or less anything you need as a beginner (and intermediate/advanced picker) without having to buy a lot of extra stuff (both types of tensioners and most types of picks). My kit had some slag (mainly on the handles) from the laser-cutting process which doesn't affect picking and was polished away with ease.

    • @LockNoob
      @LockNoob  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never thought about that, good point, but as you say, very common for the type of case, rather than the case per se

    I think that's a really good kit. A very good range of picks and I like the bok tensioners, they look really good.
    I do actually like the curved reach hook, I have made a few myself with Law Lock Tool 301 steel and it remains one of my favourites. I guess it's just preference at the end of ther day.
    Personally I would like to see cases with a bit more meat on the inner curved hinge part, that way the picking tips won't damage it and you will get a bit more life out of it.
    All in all a great review on a superb kit.

      @@LockNoob I never thought about trying it in a dimple lock. Im on a mul-t-lock kick right now so I will definitely try. I've got the sparrows dimple pick kit. What other options are out there that cost less than multipick?

    I’d love the set too if they paid me to use it.

      I don’t get paid to use anyone’s picks, I don’t think that’s a thing. I mean I wish it was, but it’s not like sports sponsorship over here lol. Companies send me kits and I sometimes review them. I’m clear about where I get my kits in my description. I don’t have to review anything and I don’t have to review something positively. No one is paying me or sponsoring me and I do not endorse anything. Do think that people who review cars buy all the cars, or computer games or films?
