    Another set and another maker that I adore. Tier 1 and then some. Their 301 HY steel I believe was the first available on the market, and at 290k~ PSI UTS it's higher strength than some lower grades of the stuff. These picks (and the Tipene Pros) were my first after I tried Peterson and was unable to get into certain highly paracentric keyways (eg DOM Plura) with their wide shanks. Properly excellent review, Sandman. Excited to see more and thanks for the opinions as always.

      Glad to see more locksporters getting into LLT. Since Bare Bonrs made me handles for all my different handles of all the picks I have brought from you and have won, like my Valyrian set I can now use all your pick handle profiles with total comfort. I am so enjoying being able to use these picks more often now. Very appreciative that you have teamed up with Bare Bones. Cheers

    Andrew Law makes some of the best in the business. His steel is second to none, and he is a true gentleman who pays attention to what his customers ask for. He REALLY knows his stuff. His collabs with Tipene and Christina Palmer are some of my favorite and most used tools in my kit.

    Welp ive been on the fence about picking up that set but i think im sold lol....one thing i will say, i think that the longhorn tension set from southern specialties does include that cutout notch...but thats neither here nor there. As always great vids man

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for letting me know, I didn’t know they’re turning tools that had that. I haven’t looked at it in a long time. I don’t even think I still have one in my collection. I’m pretty sure I gave it away. Thanks for letting me know.

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว

      I looked into the turning tools from Southern specialties, it’s not the same type of cut out. The cut out on the southern specialties was actually designed by Christina Palmer, that cut out as designed for the purpose of nesting. It has no functionality for picking a lock. It just allows the turning tools to nest against each other as they are all bent at the same angle. That’s what she told me over the phone anyways. Whether that is true or accurate, I have no idea. I will say that this particular turning tool is absolutely completely different from the southern specialties, turning tool that the longhorn tension set has. The cut out in this particular turning tool has a very specific function, which is to Bite into the brass plug somewhat. It’s kind of hard to explain, unless you have one in your hand. That being said, the southern specialties longhorn turning tool, is identical to the Covert Instruments turning tool. As both were designed by the same person. But it is completely different from the law, Lock tool, and in comparison, a similar tool that is offered by bare bones in Australia.

    Sandman, new follower here. Interesting experience tonight, I haven't picked in awhile. Just got a Sparrows Tuxedo set in the mail. I had a truck stop RoadPro lock that opened so easy. I think I could open with a zip tie.
    Anyway I found a new Master lock security level 8 on the shelf. I tried picking it, nothing worked. I'm so ashamed, I broke down and removed the key...
    The key won't even unlock this thing. I'm not saying my integrity has been restored, but until I get some WD-40 we will see. 😂😂😂

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! well dont use WD40! it is a solvent first and a lubricant 2nd as you already know. it has oil that will gum up the lock and it wont pick right after that. better to only use recommended solvents if the pins are corroded like tri-flow or houdini. dont worry, i can go to a meetup and pick 50 locks in under 2 hours, and then come across a stupid easy lock that defeats me. its not me, its the lock. at least that's what i tell myself. dont be hard on yourself, they have belt levels for a reason!

    I have been a huge fan of LLT for a long time now. Love the various profiles and that you only get a few rakes in each set. Not the almost half like others. And the steel is the only one I will use for making custom picks now.
    FYI the TOK pry bars just bend them yourself. The steel is so good you can just put them in a vise and put that bend where you want it. It can be cold worked for up to a 90 degree bend. Go slow and pulse if you’re going that far. But to make any ergo bends under 45 just do it.
    ✌🏻🌶

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, that sounds like great advice. I know custom pick maker Ratyoke uses LLT steel blanks for his pick designs, so you know they are top notch quality steel. I have always bent my SS420 peterson pry bars to my liking, but I have never bent any 301 steel, good to know they will take a bend! Thanks for stopping by and watching!

      For collecting I'd go with the Ronin. Just gorgeous. The Valyrians have the same profiles (more or less), but the handles flex a lot more, and bite into my fingertips a little more. I found it really good in terms of feedback and meant i never put too much pressure on my picks. But when it came to the long picking sessions required for me to crack one or two of my crunchy Paclocks i finally put some shrink wrap on my two favorite profiles.

    With the Law Lock hooks, which look to be built as solid as tanks (I love the height/width of those handles), you can't help but notice the handles are asymmetrical, and taking into consideration the fact that they're UK based and every picture on their website shows the hooks pointed down, as European locks typically place the bible under the plug, not above it, it seems they are primarily designed to be held with hook pointing down, albeit a minor difference. Hows the feel compared to holding them 'upside down' ?

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get what your saying, but i feel they are even more comfortable while holding them for western style pin tumbler locks with the pin stack on top, than if it were on the bottom for euro profile cylinders. it feels like your hand cradles the pick perfectly in my opinion. i feel they are very comfortable. i neve pick locks with the pin stack on the bottom, unless its in the field and in that case i just rake it.

    Another great review Sandman. I’ll definitely have to look into these in the future. I actually just ended up ordering a couple sets of Jimmy longs that I should have in the next few days. I never even heard of them until I came across your review on Jimmy longs. Anyway Im Going to try out the flat hooks for the first time. I’ve always used rounded hooks but have seen other people such as lady locks saying flat hooks is where it’s at lol

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i use flat hooks a lot! i prefer gem style half diamonds, but few people make them. only peterson and bare bones and now law lock tools. jimy has one gem style hook/half diamond but its just in .019 and .023. the .019 is my GO-TO, and i use it 90% of the time, but... when im on a paracentric keyway, and i cant get a .019 gem hook in, i use a flat hook in .015" thick. that is where flat hooks shine, in highly paracentric keyways, even in larger thicknesses like the .019" you got from jimy. they just fit in smaller spaces that a taller hook cannot, but, you lose sensitivity in the lock, as a flat hook has more surface are to make contact with the pin, so... it is hard to know which pin you are on, using the flat hook, and my guess is, that is why you love using round hooks, you love knowing exactly which pin you are on, you can feel a pin with a rounded hook, but you cant feel a pin as well with a flat hook. thats the trade off. flat hooks fit into more keyways, but at a cost. less feel, and harder to set high/low pins, but the jimy set has deep flat hooks to solve that. you cant go wrong with jimy longs ever. let me know how you like them!

    • @pieincLockPicking88
      @pieincLockPicking88 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I did want to keep you posted. I finally got my flat hooks and I definitely love them. I still think I’m going to preferred rounded hooks though just because I’m so used to using them either way I just ordered two of every set Jimy has lol. I’m still a little heavy handed so occasionally I will break something, but it’s really rare now, but I’ll have a back up set for every pick. Next up, I’ll start looking into Law lock tools, Or Peterson. Because as much as I do love using the tools I have, I really do enjoy collecting them too.

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pieincLockPicking88 that’s great, and I knew you would prefer the rounded hooks over the flat ones previous experience. That’s why it’s hard to recommend two people. They really need to know. I only use flat hooks in Paracentric keyways. Keep an eye out for Covert Instruments. They are going to start producing Lock that will be competitive against Peterson. Also, bare bones, Lock pics are essentially upgraded versions of Peterson. Peterson is no longer worth the money compared to everything else on the market. Peterson is the most expensive, but it is not the best.

    • @pieincLockPicking88

And I am currently using the Covert Instruments Genesis set and I like it but I am looking to get a better set. Im willing to spend between $100-$175 for a new pick set and I am also a beginner but I also have all the tension tools from Covert Instruments. I have been wondering what would you recommend? I was looking at the GSP Ghost Pick Set, or Jimmy Longs, or Law-lock Tools. Which do you recommend? Im looking to spend a good amount for good tools that will be good and have good feedback. I would really appreciate any help on the tools. There are so many that Im not sure which ones are the best to get

    • @sandman_locksport
      @sandman_locksport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since you are currently invested into Covert Instruments, and you have all of their turning tools, and you have their genesis set, if you just wait 30 days, they are going to come out with more tools with different sizes and profiles. Also, a little birdie told me that they are going to come out with advanced Lock picks. Meaning they will have even more profiles and sizes and with injection molded handles sometime around January or early spring. My favorite picks in the world are Jimy Longs. And they are tier one and the most affordable currently on the market since they don’t come with a case or turning tools. if you are looking to get advanced in your profiles, meaning more options in your Lock pick designs... I would look at Jimy Longs as well. Specifically his .019” thick picks. I think the coveret instruments intermediate set is going to be amazing, but I don’t think it’s going to compete with jimy longs still. However, the Lock picks covert instruments will produce next spring I think will be among the best on the market, but we are six months from that. So time will tell. Either stick with covert instruments which is a solid choice as they are growing and your collection will grow and get better with them, or make a lateral move over to Jimy Longs. I collect both. So it’s kind of subjective and will just be up to you. Both are great companies. Both are producing really great product.

      @@JBMods I’m a collector so I own all 5 sets. It I only use 2 picks. It’s up to you. Ask your self if you prefer to use flat hooks, round hooks, or diamonds. There’s nothing wrong with buying everything, but you won’t use everything. Just buy what you need for now. Only you can decide that.

    I hope you know that when you diss Peterson tools, you are actually dissing me 😢. He stole all his pick designs and turning tools, especially the TOK bars from me. 😂😂

    Hi Sand Man , I like your vids but just wanted to say I bought the smaller set and a 3 piece set. Maybe they are still tier 1 but the quality control on all of them was really really bad . The front bits are still very rough around the edges and didn’t seem tumbled at all,and almost all picks had some really nasty burrs( or whatever it’s called in English ) sticking out of the spot welds , if I wouldn’t have removed them myself I would definitely have cut myself picking. Also the totk tensioners weren’t even bend close to 90 degrees at all. I wouldn’t have anything leaving a shop like that even if someone wanted it for free . ✌🏻

      Thanks for letting me know. Have you tried reaching out to the company about these complaints? I’ve talked to the owner several times, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was willing to work with you and maybe replace the tools that don’t meet your expectations. Give it a try. You can reach him through email, Facebook, and Instagram.
