I’ve had a lot of fun buying and owning second hand road bikes in the last year and with researching suggesting more of us are set to buy pre-owned bikes in 2024, I think now is a great to time save the money on buying a new road bike and investigate a used bike. There are bargains to be had out there people!

About 3 years ago I randomly purchased a caad12 52cm used for $500 and immediately was ecstatic!! I couldn’t believe what a fun bike it is and only $500!! I just purchased a second 52cm one that is basically in brand new condition for $800!!!! Both 105 components and neither creak!! I’ll be holding on to these for many years to enjoy with my children soon!!
Damn, you got two killer deals!
CAAD12 owner here. I appreciate these videos a lot. These are great fun bikes to ride even though they aren't the newest fanciest thing. I also prefer the traditional geometry without the dropped seat stays. Cheers David.
Newest and fanciest doesn’t guarantee any more fun to ride. That’s true.
As well as I think there’s literally no better geometry tan the double diamond frame which in that form cannot be improved (except for maybe material choice but not the shape itself).
The dropped seat stays are just marketing bs for the sake of bringing something „new“.
The traditional double diamond frame geometry is what makes Cannondale distinct from many other manufacturers in the 2010s. That's what I like about Cannondale.
Great frame.
For long fast days the CAAD 10 is my go-to. Adding a CAAD 12 to the stable in the next couple of weeks. Can't go wrong with these bikes - probably the best bang for your buck out there and a couple of the best alu frames ever made.
Thing I love about your channel is that you appeal to all sizes budgets. You keep your eye on cycling public trends. (Most are now looking second hand due to the ridiculous price of new bikes.) Great stuff David.
Blessings from Dorset. 🙏😎👍🏻
Thanks Steve appreciate that 👍
Practice contentment and the bike you already own is the best bike for you
CAAD8 Owner..Excellent Frame and Very Good Performance…When you Own a CAAD...You ride on Something Classic and Special..
I have a card 8 as well & I ❤it. I ride it a lot & it’s a kick of a bike 🚴.
I've got a Caad 12 disc as my winter bike and love it, I actually think it's faster than my fancy-pants Colnago that I have as my summer ride.
Hey David, thank you for keeping it real. Enthusiasts don't need to break the bank to enjoy cycling.
David, I loved this latest video! I'm a fan of second hand bikes and the value of having and riding them. Thank you!
Still rocking a CAAD10. Updated with the last rim brake version of Dura Ace and I’m all set.
Super nice 👌
Great video, happy to call myself a caad12 owner although got one very recently as a 2nd hand bike. 2017 model with discs. First impressions are great. Cant wait to take it for longer rides with better weather
CAAD 12 owner. Changed crank to Shimano Ultegra 53/39, and changed BB30 to press fit Token. Upgraded wheels to campagnolo carbon. Turned out to an even greater bike.
Great video. The Caad 12 is a design classic, with beautiful geometry. It is so simple and elegant looking. BB30 is not so bad on the alloy frames either.
David Arthur’s CAAD12 channel 😃
Love my CAAD12 and have added a Supersix rim brake as a new project. I’ve bought lots of secondhand bikes, they’re a sensible purchase if you buy with care. Keep up the good work David
Is the SuperSix EVO a first, second or third-generation?
My ride is a 1994 Cannondale r900 w/11 spd 105 and some other newer components. It’s a ton of fun 👍👍
I have a 2017 CAAD12 and a 2019 Supersix EVO. Both Ultegra. Both are great, but Cannondale`s long term secret is that the CAAD is the better bike.
I’ve had both of these bikes, I had the slightly better flat mount forks but the rim brake version was way better to ride, carbon post, bars and wheels transform these bikes to as good as anything you can buy today
Nice change from the SL8 love fest Dave!,
My daily ride since 2013 is a Caad 10 SRAM Red 10sp Fantastic bike. I’ve owned and raced steel, carbon and aluminum bikes. All my best results were on Caad bikes. Super responsive and good road feedback. And no I’ve never had any issues with the bottom bracket!
I've got 2 second hand bikes....One I first built up back a dozen years ago from a frame I bought on eBay (GT Chucker 26" wheeled dirt jump MTB for £16)....Several different incarnations from 3x9 to 1x9 and now completely modernised to SRAM 1x1, wide bars, hydro discs and tubeless.....It's one of a kind and still gets a shred every now and then....my alternate XC bike but heavy and great fun.
The other is a rim brake entry level Allez 2x8 from 2010 bought 9 years ago.....Everything component wise has been replaced apart from frame, fork, headset and front mech....She still rides lovely.....and that's tomorrow morning's hour long ride choice of steed methinks as she's not had an outing for a number of weeks.....That old Specialized red paintjob is out of date but still looks pretty good.
Keep old bikes going is my view.....easy to work on etc
Totally agree! I'm going with the red bike, though. Offers the best value and is perfect for your daily training. Still you can upgrade step by step whenever some funds are available to do so. This bike won't get outdated soon!
I had my best ever racing season on a CAAD frame. it was back in 1999 on a CAAD4 Cipollini lookalike with Campag Chorus and either their black Shamals or their lightweight box section rims (can't remember the name). carried me to a 2nd cat license. happy days 🙂
The Merida Scultura 400 & 400 Disc is another great option. Both come with 11 speed 105 mechanical. I bought the disc version in 2021 & that uses thru axels so easy to upgrade your wheelset. Even though it’s rated for 28mm tyres, ive fitted 32mm with no issues & I started this year using it as my daily commuter bike with a tailfin rack to fit all my clothes. My only regret is I didn’t start using it as my commuter bike earlier, it’s such a joy to ride.
My cadd 10, Magistroni , Derosa, Merlin, Nagasawa are all used aluminium and titanium materials. Colnago (carbon) didn’t last , it broke …my suggestion to new comers to cycling is but aluminium. They are not expensive. Life is short ,, enjoy the ride…
Well done for putting this out there David 😊 excellent 👍👍🚴🏻😃Pete
I’ve bought and sold many used bikes and as long as you know what issues to look for when buying and can correct them at a low enough cost, it’s the best way to get a premium bike at a big discount compared to new bike prices. A new bike retailing for £1000 has an actual cost price closer to £250 before margins and mark ups. Maybe I should be adding CAADs to my collection now!
Good on you David, Performance over flash only reinforces your credibility with your followers.....Besides that, I luv rims brakes too!!!
Cheers Mate, Pjw
Bought a caad 12 last year. Was a 2018 disc break and less than 50km on it! Sold my 2021 trek Domane carbon for it and pocketed $2000 canadian in the process. I'll be using some of that money to make upgrades on the caad like set of carbon wheels I can then move to other bikes in the future, power meter pedals I can again move to another bike and carbon seatpost because I do find the caad isn't as comfortable as my trek Domane (which is an endurance bike) for rides longer than 2h. Still love the bike and Im sure once I make upgrades Its gojng to be lighter, faster and more comfortable than my trek Domane
I do the same thing pick up a good bike and just replace a few parts etc. You need to be handy to do everything. Save a lot of money 💰.
Hi David, thank you for the video. I own a CAADX with a postmount on the fork as well. How did you manage to put the 105 caliper on yours? Is some adaptation required?
Nice video, the Caad 12 for £500 was a real steal, pity there are no deals like that in South Africa.Safe riding.💯👌🏻🚴♀️
Right - in the US that doesn't even cover the frame.
Already got a caad 12 disc now need a rim brake one :)
Caad 12 are just beyond the best alloy bikes ever.
My first road bike was an original Ribble R872 (sometimes called the 'stealth' for its black carbon look). It cost me £700 used with some 50mm Planet X carbon/alloy tubs. I sold the wheels for £200 and bought a set of used (not really though) alloy clinchers (Campag Zonda). The bike's a mix of Ultegra and 105 and has been demoted to my travel bike but honestly, every time I ride it I can't help but think just how good it is and the value it represents. Yes, my 2020 SSE disc is one hell of a thing but I'm so much more precious of it.
Great video. The issue is with RIM brakes in the years to come will be the wheelsets. Becoming less and less. Both my bikes (which I love)
are rim brakes but eventually they will need to be replaced by disc brake bike.
Still rocking my 1993 R400, updated with 105 11-speed. It rides like a dream.
I don't plan on buying a bike this year, although I do quite fancy buying an older second hand bike next time I am in the market to buy. Both of those bikes look nice.
Great video as always. Ignore those smug Aussies and keep doing what you do.
Love the reviews on CAAD12. BTW how to maintain the paint job on CAAD12 ? Any guides or videos about it ? Greatly appreciated.
if u dont want headaches just quit the paint they look great in raw aliminium
Well done thank you. In the market with them keep trying to get us to spend more money. I just like riding my bike. Thank you again.
I had a black anodised CAAD12 rim brake frameset built with DA9000 group and SISL2 cranks. Didn't really like it and sold it within a month and purchased a Canyon Ultimate CF SLX. I had a CAAD9 prior to that and loved it but found the 12 a bit extreme on our rubbish roads.
Cycling market has entered motor vehicle market, people having not option but buying used.
Is it good for racing?
I noticed your red bike has a Fabric seat. I have a Fabric seat on two of my bikes and find them very comfortable. I haven't been able to find a new one online. Can anyone give me source for Fabric saddles?
I recently bought a 2016 Scott Speedster - alloy frame, carbon forks, 105 groupset etc. Hardly used, immaculate and like new for £200. It’s all the bike I’ll ever need so I agree second hand is the way to go but I think your red bike wasn’t that cheap given it’s condition and the time and cost of the service items needed to put it right.
I bought a second hand caad 12 rim brake. I had to resell it because I was anticipating the shift of the industry towards disc brakes. Besides that, I really loved it.
Love it David and I take no notice of the criticism from the Australian 👍
I have the exact same CAAD12 on a set of Mavic Cosmic Pros - which I really enjoy. Bought used at a steal too.
You might be able to swap out the fork to get rid of the post mount brake.
Totally agree. A bike from the 2000's is as good now as it was then. Love 10 speed Campag still.
I got a Fuji folding bike second hand a couple years ago. It rides good.
I sold my caad12 it was ok it was bit to big for me lol
I'm looking at domane or orbea orca sat on them see really comfortable
Love this theme!❤🎉
having a second bike like that is something i'd love, but i'm scared i wouldn't use it often as i got my shiny Elves Vanyar on the other side. A Caad 12 with 45mm wheels could be a good mulet for winter...
I'd say get a mint CAAD10/12 as your main bike and make your Elves your bad weather bike
They are insanely priced in my area already. A poor condition one is around $700-1000usd if I can even find one in a l/xl frame size
You didn't mention the weights Dave.
I ride a 2000 caad4 with r8000 and a 2015 black inc supersix with Duraace. Best of both worlds
Ive just started cycling and had to settle for a diamond back full steel with terrible brakes for £100 from Facebook marketplace. I love the sport and whilst i wait until i can afford another bike, the tank im using will have to do 😂
the only problem about caads is that of u want to change your ultegra or 105 components in a few years u would not be able to find anything else than tiagra for rim brakes...its sad, i just bought an aluminium disc brake frame because the bike industry forced me. im thinking to keep my caad12 just like a relic
When Shimano CUES branches out to the road lineup, I think the components may carry trickle-down technology from the last generation of 105 and Ultegra 11-speed mechanical.
I was about to head out for a ride on my nice carbon bike but after watching this video, it made me want to dust off and ride my Cannondale Six13 instead😁
Hi David - I want a bike for my commute 1/2 road and half canal path 12 miles each way - don’t want to use my Aethos any recommendations second hand please cheap like these???
Get a cheap used gravel bike? Can get a nice gen 1 Specialized Diverge for reasonable money
I bought a secondhand CAAD9 a few months back and it’s beautiful, handmade in the USA 🇺🇸
those aren't as good as the tawainese caads, they came with major issues, hope yours is issue free
@@Megadeth6633 seems to run fine but the ride quality is harsher than I’m used to compared to my newer bike! I just like looking at it
@@Megadeth6633What issues do the problematic CAAD9s usually sport?
@@yonglingng5640 alignment issues with the welds, and head tube reeming issues (the headset bearings are not well aligned and makes the bike sluggish). If you search for caad9s of the same size on Google you can clearly see differences in weld positions, especially top tube+head tube weld. The quality control was not there
Nice & Thanks :)
Owned a CAAD 10 from new 2012 and would never part with it
I have spent around 30 000km riding a 2018 Supersix Evo with Dura-Ace of this frame design and geometry and I think you are wrong. This frame design is twitchy due to the short wheel base and the amount of fatiguing high frequency vibration it transfers to the rider through the bars is just ridiculous by modern standards. There is quite literally no vertical compliance built into this frame design. I have other bikes too like Scott, Canyon, Ribble and Giant and none of these bikes have the same issue. These bikes are cheap but absolutely brutal on the body. Fantastic steering you say? Compared to what? The Treks, Giants, Ritte, and Ribble I have owned actually do have great handling and steering.
The CAAD12 is more compliant than a bike like the 2009 Colnago Primavera (6061 triple-butted aluminium).
Was it just the CAAD10 rim brake frame where the rear brake would stick open because the brake cable was eating into the frame?
I've worked on a CAAD10 before, its rear brake worked just fine. When you said "eating into the frame", which part of the rear brake line is it on the frame?
@@yonglingng5640 the exit of the rear brake cable. The internal routing is poorly designed, the cable cuts into the internal part of the frame. In addition to cutting a groove into the frame it causes the brake to stick open. Apparently it's a common problem, I only now one person with a CAAD10 and it happened to his.
@@kpizzle1985 I usually install a cable liner after I flared one end with a lighter so that the newly flared flange can sit in the cable housing stop without going into the frame. This way, the cable won't touch any part of the frame's cable housing stop. Maybe tell your friend to give this a go.
I must admit . I love the new bike reviews .but these older bikes are in the budget . On a older bike and my fitness I can out gun a newer bikes lol
Cheers .
Second hand bikes are the way to go for sure. But why on earth do you think the value of second hand CAAD12s are going to go up in the future?
They won’t
Long live the CAAD12. Owned a size 51 Cerulean CAAD Optimo for a few hours on March 24, 2019 before it got wrecked a few hours after building it up and tried to ride it home. It was my first time on a road bike. I used the money for the damages to buy my first size 52 Hazard Orange CAAD12 and built it up on April 2019. It was equipped with Claris components before upgrading to the newly released back then R7000 weighed 9 kilos then dropped to 8.7 kilos. Unfortunately it too suffered the same demise after I again got rear ended by another motorcycle back in 2020. I again used up the payment for damages to build a size 50 Cashmere CAAD 12 using the components from the previous one and weighed 7.8 kilos after upgrading to R8000 cassette and R9100 front derailleur and light set of wheels. It got stolen though back in 2021. I built a size 48 Black Inc CAAD 12 with Dura Ace R9100 derailleurs and calipers, Ultegra R8000 cassette, pedals, STI levers, and cranks, and aluminum Hunt wheels. It currently weighs at 7.5 kilograms with pedals and a bottle cage.
I really hope nothing happens to your third CAAD12. 🙏 You absolutely didn't need the 3-year bad luck streak.
@@yonglingng5640 the 3 CAAD 12 bikes have names that I forgot to mention. “HazMat” as in Hazardous Materials since I recently got in an accident with the CAAD Optimo, “Pandamic” since the cashmere one had white and black and a bit of silver accents and she was my ride during the pandemic, and lastly the Black Inc one is “Midnight“ since 12 is midnight and obviously it’s blacked out. All but Pandamic were pre owned frames. I got along well with Pandamic with my bike fit. My current one, Midnight is almost slammed. Too bad I couldn’t ride as much like when I was with HazMat and Pandamic. I got down to 64 kilograms with those 2 with all the long distance rides and climbs. Midnight is what most scared of among the 3. They’re all quick downhill descenders but Midnight just hard to stop once she’s rolling. I’m no longer a daredevil downhill artist as before during my time with the 2 predecessors. Heck I once leaned so low that I scraped my pedal it made my rear tire bounce off the tarmac for a second. People who saw it screamed and thought I was going to crash. I was dropped during a climb with a few young acquaintances that I thought to myself I would at least be the quickest in descending. I’m just glad I didn’t crash. Nowadays I don’t ride reckless and think about how expensive the components I put on this dream build. Hope to ride more this year. Ride safe everyone
Can I use it in a race?
CAAD series bikes are very popular for crit races, especially the 10 and 12.
Go for triban rc500 or 520 , best for the Buks
You only gotta change the tires from the go, the original tires are grippy but slow. Some proper gp5000s will make it really good
The best bike is the one you have or you can afford. Else it will remain forever elusive and out of reach.
All you need is a tcr rim brake.
I owned a CAAD10 as my first serious bicycle and it was amazing. But my Ultegra version was €1800 from the shop and now i see used CAAD12 all the way up to €1800. I wouldn't buy one for more than a €1000 tbh, seeing they are used and you have no clue how it was treated.
Aren't there any underutilised bone stock or almost-stock CAAD12s in your area?
@@yonglingng5640 that €1800 one is a stock ultegra, that should be €1800 new in the year it was released
Hi David my OCD has kicked in on the Silver Cad 12 screwer is on the wrong side on the front wheel 🫣
You must live a miserable life 👀😂
Yes i do😂 but it just jumps out at me can't unsee it now.🤓 @@patrickclarke3645
CAAD 13 105 Disc can be had for under £1500 new! That's a bargain.
But then you have a disc braked bike
@@LTBlightthebeam Yea, that's a good thing in my books.
Inside the frame just above the BB area there is a reinforcement piece that was cutting my rear brake hose. I had to file it smooth and haven't rebuilt the bike, went to a CAAD 10.
Rim brakes and mechanical shift for ever and ever!
CAAD so GOOD
Why do I need to watch your videos about consumer products, it will be my money that I use to buy my own bike?
For sure used bikes are the way to go a lot of times.
love my caad12. if only it didnt creak
Have you tried bearing retaining compound? Has any shop checked your BB shell's quality?
@@yonglingng5640 I have tried using a retaining compound together with a Bbinfinite BB with no luck. Dropped it off at my local shop now. hopefully they can assess the shell's quality and fix the issue.
💪🧐🎸 KILLA 🎸👻
Why do you need two cheap bikes ? I can fully understand people need multiple expensive ones, but cheap ? That defies the purpose 😂
Buy while cheap? Bikes are only going to get cheaper
Stop buying bikes.
I don’t like where this channel is going. He’s trying to cater to all riders.
One moment he’s like “why buy anything else (other than a Tarmac SL8)?”. Another moment he’s in the camp of CAAD cultists. I remember him singing praises for Vitus Evo as well.
Make up your mind. LOL. Who rides gravel, races road, rides an endurance bike all in a week? 😂 who is this channel for? Is it for the gravel riders? is it for the budding racers, aspiring to be pro? Is it for the fast bunch weekend warriors? Is it for the fondo/audax riders? I am just so confused.
You're getting older David 🤭 Old bikes goes to museum 😂
🤣😩
